  I've seen offerings such as VPSs (Linode, Rackspace Cloud), which are very cheap but you're on your own, and managed hosting (Engine Yard, Rackspace), which are very expensive but they do all the system administration for you, in some cases even writing your deploy scripts. Is there any kind of middle-ground option where I don't have to pay the huge flat rate for the management, but can still request specific sysadmin tasks to be carried out and pay on an hourly basis?

  Hello, I'm on shared hosting and today i discovered there are some backdoor script.. in .htaccess and a php file. So i went to check via FTP, cannot edit nor delete. So i checked with direct admin.. the file permission(GUID, UID) is set by APACHE while rest of file is set by my username, So my question now is.. the trojan did this is originated from my computer or host side?

• Moving email accounts between shared-hosting servers

  I've got to move email from one shared-hosting server to another. The reason to move is my current provider doesn't support IMAP, so access to emails is only through POP. I have 5 accounts to move, with 3 of them being 500MB. Is there a way to do it? (other than downloading it all to a client and updating server settings to new server and therefore uploading the files to new server) Any suggestions?

  I want to set up a virtual hosting server on Linux/Apache2.2 that allows multiple users to set up multiple website domains as would be appropriate for commercial shared hosting. I have seen examples (from my then perspective as a shared hosting customer) that allow users to store their web files in their user home directory with directories to correspond to the virtual host domain, e.g.: /home/user1/www/example1.com /home/user2/www/example2.com instead of using /var/www Questions: How would you configure this in your Apache configuration files? (Don't worry about DNS) Is this the best way to manage multiple virtual hosts? Are there others? What safety or security issues do you think I should be aware of in doing this? Many thanks, folks. Edit: If you want to only answer question 1, please feel free, as that is the most urgent to me at this moment and I would consider that an answer to the question. There are (or were) many answers which clearly show misunderstanding of the question (I know that's also my fault, sorry for that) Hi, I've looked over the questions on virtual inheritance (class B: public virtual A {...}) in C++, but did not find an answer to my question. I know that there are some issues with virtual inheritance, but what I'd like to know is in which cases virtual inheritance would be considered a good design. I saw people mentioning interfaces like IUnknown or ISerializable, and also that iostream design is based on virtual inheritance. Would those be good examples of a good use of virtual inheritance, is that just because there is no better alternative, or because virtual inheritance is the proper design in this case? Thanks. EDIT: To clarify, I'm asking about real-life examples, please don't give abstract ones. I know what virtual inheritance is and which inheritance pattern requires it, what I want to know is when it is the good way to do things and not just a consequence of complex inheritance. • Distinction between Cloud Servers and VPS

  What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider? From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps? The mailserver shares the same IP address, so my typical DNS config is: www.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com A -> IP ftp.mydomain.com A -> IP mail.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com MX(10) -> IP I read some Q&A on this site where they suggest to add PTR record mainly for mailserver. I would like to add PTR record to my domain, I have got two questions: 1) can PTR record be added even if the hosting/mailserver are on a shared IP address? Or do I need a dedicated IP. 2) How do I setup PTR record, I mean does it look like A record: mydomain.com (PTR) -> myip

  Hello, We're launching a product in a few months, which will obviously have a website. Judging from our current traffic, we believe that overall traffic will probably not be that much, but we are aiming at promoting the site heavily using social media. This has the typical problem, that IF we get suddenly get picked up by a large tech blog, we will see a sudden burst: A very heavy increase in traffic all of the sudden. If we use a cheap charlie host as our current host is (www.unoeuro.com) or something similar like GoDaddy, I'm afraid that the site will go down under the load. If that happens, then we might as well have thrown our social media marketing dollars out of the window. Our site will be relatively lightweight, all videos hosted at Youtube or Vimeo and other than that mainly just a standard webpage (ie nothing too heavy). I am hoping for recommendations for a good hosting company, which has some form of scalable hosting, so if / when a traffic surge hits, the site will not go down.

While working on a file monitor for our site, we have found that the File System Object allows us to enumerate the directories and files of other customers that are on the same server as us. Attempting to enumerate files in some root customer directories results in access denied errors - but not all. Is this an IIS configuration error? A Windows configuration error? • Which free open source CPanel and WHM alternatives do you recommend/use?

  I have been using webmin for some time now, however I miss the elegance and ease of WHM/CPanel combo I've had on shared hosting (and later dedicated hosting) platform. Looking around the web, all I have found that is somewhat at the level of WHM/CPanel was webmin - but WHM/CPanel it is not. Since I'm using this only for our projects, it doesn't matter in the end really. However, we do put our new customers on our servers too, so some sort of CPanel might be an easier thing for them to cope with (mostly going about Email accounts stuff and such). Currently my stack is LAMP (CentOS and Ubuntu Server - several machines, probably ditching CentOS soon in favor of Ubuntu). There is a prospect of Python/Django instead of PHP, but it might take awhile.

Well you can verify the other options, but with these changes you will be able to start the VM. Note: Sometime the VM owner may share some instructions, if so follow his instructions.8.   I'm not trying to start a "which language is better" argument here, so please don't go there. I typically use PHP for most of my web development (mostly because hosting is cheap), but for various reasons I'm looking to use ASP.NET for a couple new projects. But one of the major reasons I've stayed away from ASP.NET up until now is the cost. I've seen some budget hosting options, but they always seem a little sketchy to me. From what I've generally found, that's just the way the hosting scene looks for ASP.NET unless you want to go dedicated. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a solid ASP.NET host with a good feature set and reliability for my money? Also, are there any options out there along the lines of Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud? And yes, I know... Mono. I'm talking about Windows based "grid" hosting options?

  I have an idea for a web-based service. The implementation is very complex. There will be very few users, and the traffice will be fairly low, but the server-side code could require a lot of resources. Ideally I'd need to have as much control over the servers as possible. How should I arrange hosting for this, when it comes time to release it to the public? Should I do the hosting myself, from my own servers? Trouble is, since I'm not quite an expert on .NET hosting, it might take time to learn and I might make big mistakes. The trouble with using a hosting company is, they might steal my idea, or else, it might cost a lot. Since I'm an un-funded startup I don't have a lot of money to throw at this.

  I'm using webhost4life shared hosting right now. They have a 99.99% up-time guarantee, but it is definitely not. Their support has been good when I do contact them, but it's just not stable. The site will just go down at random times for 5-10 minutes at a time. I know I'm on shared hosting, but I was hoping it would be more stable than it is. My app isn't at the point where it would need dedicated hosting yet, if the shared was stable enough. Any affordable hosting that you can vouch for (that supports ASP.NET MVC)?
