  I have a question for a Javascript regex ninja: How could I simplify my variable creation from a string using regex? I currently have it working without using any grouping, but I would love to see a better way! • How might you unobtrusively enhance the jQuery Datepicker class?

  You can pass special strings into jQuery's Datepicker class setDate() method like "+7" which will be translated into "7 days from today": http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Datepicker#method-setDate But you can't get that "+7" back out. When you call getDate() you get the calculated resulting date. I have a use case where I need to pull out the special string "+7" for propagation. One chunk of code is passing a special string into the Datepicker and passing the Datepicker over to another chunk of code which pulls out the date, but the latter sometimes needs to know the special string rather than the calculated date. So I need to enhance the Datepicker tool to (a) store the special code internally and (b) expose it via a method like getOriginallyPassedInDate() or some such. I'm not a jQuery/Javascript ninja so I could really use some guidance on how I might preferably-unobtrusively add the necessary functionality to the Datepicker class, the way you might monkey-patch an object in Ruby I'm guessing.

• How To Personalize the Windows Command Prompt

  Command line interfaces can be downright boring, and always seem to miss out on the fresh coats of paint liberally applied to the rest of Windows.  Here’s how to add a splash of color to Command Prompt and make it unique. By default, Windows Command Prompt is white text on a black background. It get’s the job done, but maybe you want to add some color to it.   To get an overview of what we can do with the color command, let’s enter: color /? So, to get the color you want, enter color then the option for the background color followed by the font color.  For example, let’s make an old-fashioned green on black look by entering: color 02   There are a bunch of different combinations you can do, like this black background with red text. color 04 You can’t mess it up too much.  The color command won’t let you set both the font and the background to the same color, which would make it unreadable.  Also, if you want to get back to the default settings, just enter: color Now we’re back to plain-old black and white. Personalize Command Prompt Without Commands If you’d prefer to change the color without entering commands, just click on the Command Prompt icon in the top left corner of the window and select Properties. Select the Colors tab, and then choose the color you want for the screen text and background.  You can also enter your own RGB color combination if you want.   Here we entered the RGB values to get a purple background color like Ubuntu 10.04. Back in the Properties dialog, you can also change your Command Prompt font from the font tab.  Choose any font you want, as long as the one you want is one of the three listed here. Customizations you make via the Properties dialog are saved and will be used any time you open Command Prompt, but any customizations you make with the Color command are only for that session. • How to Assign a Static IP to an Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Computer

  If you have a home network with several computers, assigning them static IP addresses can make troubleshooting easier. Today we take a look at switching from DHCP to a static IP in Ubuntu. Assign a Static IP Using Static IPs prevents address conflicts between machines and can allow easier access to them. If you have a small home network and are satisfied with the machines getting their IP address automatically via DHCP, there won’t be anything gained by using static addresses. Using Static IPs isn’t necessarily for the average user, but if you’re a geek who wants to know the address assigned to each machine, it can allow for faster troubleshooting.  To change your Ubuntu machine to a Static IP go to System \ Preferences \ Network Connections. In our example, we’re on a wired system so click on the Wired tab, then select Auto eth0 and click on Edit. Select the IPv4 settings tab, change Method to Manual, click the Add button. Then type in the Static IP Address, Subnet Mask, DNS Servers, and Default Gateway. Then click Apply when you’re finished. Make sure to hit Enter after typing in the Default Gateway otherwise it will revert back to 0.0.0.0 You’ll need to enter in your admin password before the changes go into affect. To verify the changes have been made successfully launch a Terminal session and type in ifconfig at the command prompt, or follow these directions. You also might want to ping the address from another machine to make sure everything is communicating. If you want to assign a Static IP to your Windows machines, check out our article on how to assign a Static IP on Windows systems (make sure to browse the comments as our readers have some good suggestions).  Whether you have a small office or home network set up with a server and several machines, using a Static IP on each device can help you manage them easily. Again, it isn’t for everyone as it really depends on how your network is setup and the way you use it. • Squid: caching *.swf with variables

  I'd recently upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 x64 server to 12.04. In this process Squid was updated from 2.7 to 3.1. Squid 3.1 has many different options witch broke my setup. So I completely removed squid 2.7 and 3.1 and started from scratch. Everything is now working as before except for 1 thing: caching of .swf files with ?/variables. Squid 3 sees a ? as dynamic content and does not cache it. • Make the Taskbar Buttons Switch to the Last Active Window in Windows 7

  The new Windows 7 taskbar’s Aero Peek feature, with the live thumbnails of every window, is awesome… but sometimes you just want to be able to click the taskbar button and have the last open window show up instead. Here’s a quick hack to make it work better. To better understand the problem, imagine having nine windows of the same type open on your screen, but you are primarily working in just one of the windows at a time. So every time you want to switch back, you have to click the taskbar button, and then choose the one you are using from the list, which can be pretty annoying… Now if you know your Windows 7 shortcuts, you’d know that you can simply hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on the taskbar button, and the last window will show up. In fact, you can keep holding down the Ctrl key and keep clicking, and Windows will cycle through the open windows. It’s a useful shortcut, but hardly something you want to do every single time. Instead, we’ll use a quick registry hack to make the normal click switch to the last open window—if you still want to see the thumbnail list, just hover your mouse over the button for half a second to see the full list. Manual Registry Hack for Last Active Window Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then head down to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Once you’re there, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right hand side, give it the name LastActiveClick, and set the value to 1. Once you are done, it should look something like this: Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, or you can kill Explorer.exe through Task Manager and re-open it. Download the Registry Hack Instead Since you probably don’t feel like registry hacking, we’ve provided you an easy downloadable version. You can simply download the file, extract it, and then double-click on the LastActiveClick.reg file. Once you are done, you’ll have to log off and back on, just like with the manual registry hack. Impressions range from 0 to 5000000. The table is currently write-mostly.  Its primary purpose is to log advertising activity as quickly as possible.  Nothing in the rest of the system reads from it except for batch jobs that pull the data into summary tables. Heres the current information on the database tables size: Design Goals This table has been in use for about 5 years and has performed very well during that time.  The only complaints we have are that it is quite large and also there are occasionally timeouts for queries that reference it, particularly when batch jobs are pulling data from it.  Any changes should be made with an eye toward keeping write performance optimal  while trying to reduce space and improve read performance / eliminate timeouts during read operations. Refactor There are, I suggest to you, some glaringly obvious optimizations that can be made to this table.  And Im sure there are some ninja tweaks known to SQL gurus that would be a big help as well.  Ill post my own suggested changes in a follow-up post for now feel free to comment with your suggestions. • A CMS based on Yii ?

  Hi - i've been with Yii for a few months and before I use main CodeIgniter, SilverStripe in my projects. Does anyone know a good Yii based CMS such as SilverStripe based on Sapphire or EE based on CodeIgniter ? My experience is working with Yii is much more easier and straightforward assuming you are good OOP coder but Yii is still young and there are not lot of samples that I can put together quickly for a real prodcution project. • TDD, DDD and the No-getters principle

  Hi all, After several years of following the bad practice handed down from 'architects' at my place of work and thinking that there must be a better way, I've recently been reading up around TDD and DDD and I think the principles and practices would be a great fit for the complexity of the software we write. However, many of the TDD samples I have seen call a method on the domain object and then test properties of the object to ensure the behaviour executed correctly. On the other hand, several respected people in the industry (Greg Young most noticeably so) advocate the "no-getters" principle on our domain objects. My question therefore is: How does one test the functionality of a domain object if it is forbidden to retrieve its state? I believe I am missing something fundamental so please feel free to call me an idiot and enlighten me - any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

• What happened to Perl?

  I will try to keep this as objective as possible. I've been dealing with PHP since 3 years know, I have always known of Perl but never really "dived" into it. So I took a look at some Perl code examples and I thought: Wow, It's like PHP just failed at cloning it. My questions are: What is bad about Perl? What are the disadvantages that made it so extremely unpopular so that it is actually dying right know? Why could PHP take over? What does PHP have (or what did it have in the times of PHP4) that made it rise in popularity compared to Perl? I'm rather young and the questions above are a bit subjective and I think you can only really answer them when you have experienced the rise of PHP along with the fall of Perl. Unless my question before I hope that this one here can be more or less completely answered. There have to be definite disadvantages Perl has compared to PHP that made it fall.

• How long should it take for someone to be able to type code from memory?

  Hi, I understand that this question could be answered with a simple sentence and that it may be viewed as subjective, however, I am a young student who is interested in pursuing a career in programming and wondered how long it took some of you to get to the level of experience you are now?. I ask this because I am currently working on building an application in Java on the Android platform and it bothers me that I am constantly having to look up how to write a certain section of code in my application such as writing to a database, or how the if loop should be structured. My question really is, how long did it take for you to become experienced enough to actually know exactly how your next line of code was going to look, before you even wrote it?

• Learning about tests for junior programmers

  I`m not sure if its okay to ask it on stackoverflow. Ive been reading a log about tests, unit tests, tests frameworks, mocks and so on, but as a junior programmer I dont know anything about tests, not even where to start! Can anyone explain to young programmers about tests, how they`re run, where and what to test, what is unit testing, integration testing, automated tests? How much to test? And more important: how much test is enough? I belive this would be very helpfull. If possible indicate a few books too about these subjects. Thanks

• C# Operator Overloading post-fix increment

  I'm coding a date class and am having trouble with the post-fix increment (the prefix increment seems fine). Here is the sample code: public class date { int year, month, day; public date(int d, int m, int y) { day = d; month = m; year = y; } static public date operator ++(date d) { return d.Next(d); } } The method "Next(date d)" takes a date and returns tomorrows date (I left it out for brevity). I'm to young in C# to understand why the prefix is fine but postfix increment does nothing. But remember in C++ we would have to have two methods instead of just one - for prefix and postfix increments. Also no errors or warnings on compile.

• Unique identifiers for users

  If I have a table of a hundred users normally I would just set up an auto-increment userID column as the primary key. But if suddenly we have a million users or 5 million users then that becomes really difficult because I would want to start becoming more distributed in which case an auto-increment primary key would be useless as each node would be creating the same primary keys. Is the solution to this to use natural primary keys? I am having a real hard time thinking of a natural primary key for this bunch of users. The problem is they are all young people so they do not have national insurance numbers or any other unique identifier I can think of. I could create a multi-column primary key but there is still a chance, however miniscule of duplicates occurring. Does anyone know of a solution? Thanks

• How do you balance business process changes against the challenges of changing software?

  In my admittedly young career I've found myself writing code to support quirky business rules and processes. Inevitably these changes were always in some massively difficult code base and caused many issues. My question has a couple of parts: While software is a tool for businesses to make their lives easier, at what point do we as developers suggest a change in business process rather than in the software as the "magic bullet" to solve a particular problem. How do we as developers evangelize a certain level of reverence for the software as well as the difficulty involved in making changes simply to support the quirks of the business? I understand that these changes in business processes promote our industry, but in an analogy my father would understand: Which is easier, to melt down a hammer to forge a screwdriver to drive screws or to simply use nails since your hammer is already awesome...?

  I have a table to entities (lets call them people) and properties (one person can have an arbitrary number of properties). Ex: People Name Age -------- Jane 27 Joe 36 Jim 16 Properties Name Property ----------------- Jane Smart Jane Funny Jane Good-looking Joe Smart Joe Workaholic Jim Funny Jim Young I would like to write an efficient select that would select people based on age and return all or some of their properties. Ex: People older than 26 Name Properties Jane Smart, Funny, Good-looking Joe Smart, Workaholic It's also acceptable to return one of the properties and total property count. The query should be efficient: there are millions of rows in people table, hundreds of thousands of rows in properties table (so most people have no properties). There are hundreds of rows selected at a time. Is there any way to do it?

  Quick Story: I started a new job where everyone funneled their questions to 'the geek'. Being an experienced developer, I can do most of my assignments without consultation with the geek - thinks such as how to select the top 10 rows in a table. Question: Is there a preferred way of handling these cases without offending the existing geek while ensuring the best solution gets implemented? My issue is the the existing geek is very young and makes a lot of mistakes, but still sounds authoritative because the other coders are just out of school and don't know better.

• Do Eclipse's Refactoring Tools Violate The Java Language Specification?

  In Eclipse 3.5, say I have a package structure like this: tom.package1 tom.package1.packageA tom.package1.packageB if I right click on an the tom.package1 package and go to Refactor-Rename, an option "Rename subpackages" appears as a checkbox. If I select it, and then rename tom.package1 to tom.red my package structure ends up like this: tom.red tom.red.packageA tom.red.packageB Yet I hear that Java's packages are not hierarchical. The Java Tutorials back that up (see the section on Apparent Hierarchies of Packages). It certainly seems like Eclipse is treating packages as hierarchical in this case. I was curious why access specifiers couldn't allow/restrict access to "sub-packages" in a previous question because I KNEW I had seen "sub-packages" referenced somewhere before. So are Eclipse's refactoring tools intentionally misleading impressionable young minds by furthering the "sub-package" myth? Or am I misinterpreting something here?

• Checkstyle for C#?

  I'm looking to find something along the lines of Checkstyle for Visual Studio. I've recently started a new gig doing .NET work and realized that coding standards here are a bit lacking. While I'm still a young guy and far from the most experienced developer I'm trying to lead by example and get things going in the right direction. I loved the ability to use Checkstyle with Eclipse and examine code before reviews so I'd like to do the same thing with Visual Studio. Anyone have any good suggestions? Another thing I'd be somewhat interested in is a plug-in for SVN that disallows check-in until the main coding standards are met. I do not want people checking in busted code that's going to wind up in a code review. Any suggestions at this point would be great.

For the past two months, i have been researching on types of programming, i found my interest in desktop programming, and also found this subjects (discrete maths, logic, algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, simulation) said to be a most known (subjects). Well as a beginner, i have no understanding on what type of language or books that can cover all these subjects, or even how to write any code.
