  • Expanding videoplayer like CNN-website, prerably jQuery-based

    I'm wondering if anyone knows of a script/plugin, jquery-based or otherwise, which could be used to achive the effect that can be found on CNN.com. I'm talking about the videos that are representet by a small thumbnail, that when clicked expands in to the text and plays. I'm by no means a JS-guru, and me and flash isn't the bestest of friends, but I'm not completly cluess. Essentially, what im looking for is a way to click a thumbnail, expand a swf, and stop it if i contract it again. something like that. ANY ideas, tips or insights are welcome!

  • Client side page call/scrape?

    Here is the problem: I have a web application - a frequently changing notification system - that runs on a series of local computers. The application refreshes every couple of seconds to display the new information. The computers only display info, and do not have keyboards or ANY input device. The issue is that if the connection to the server is lost (say updates are installed and a server must be rebooted), a page not found error is displayed). We must then either reboot all computers that are running this app, OR add a keyboard and refresh the browser, OR try to access each computer remotely and refresh the browser. None of these are good options and result in a lot of frustration. I cannot change the actual application OR server environment. So what I need is some way to test the call to the application, and if an error is returned or it times out, continue trying every minute or so until the connection is reestablished. My idea is to create a client-side page scraper, that makes a JS request to the application (which displays basic HTML), and can run locally on the machine, no server required. If the scrape returns the correct content, it displays it. If not it continues to request the page until the actual page content is returned. Is this possible? What is the best way to do it?

    I don't know how to search about this so I'm kinda lost (the two topics I saw here were closed). I have a news website and I want to warn the user when a new data is inserted on the database. I want to do that like here on StackOverflow where we are warned without reloading the page or like in facebook where you are warned about new messages/notifications without reloading. Which is the best way to do that? Is it some kind of listener with a timeout that is constantly checking the database? It doesn't sounds efficient... Thanks in advance.

I can create a list, but I can't add a row; this code is causing problems.   • jquery mobile - loading content into a div

    Jquery Mobile works by “hijacking” a page and loading content and injecting it into the page. It seems that this creates a problem when i try to inject other content into the page. I have my index.html and then a page2.html file. I'm setting up jquery mobile in the normal fashion wrapping the contents of each page in a div like so: <div id="container" data-role="page"> // my content <a href="page2.html">go to page 2</a> </div> when the user taps go to page 2, it does the nice slide effect. The url in the location bar looks like this: index.html#page2.html jquery mobile inject the content of the page using the anchors and applies the transition. nice so everthing works great up to the next part.     Does (or did) Twitter ever have a method in their API that allowed client-side HTTP requests without producing any cross-domain issues? I have a site that used the following url: http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q=from%3adaleyjem&rpp=3&page=1&callback=? It once worked, but now it doesn't. Is there something else I should be using, or do I have to make a request to my own server-side code?

I dread having to deal with HTML, JavaScript etc. to build a high quality browser based user interface. I've got the full suite of Telerik controls. Is it possible to build a polished, somewhat feature rich browser UI while being sheltered from the archaic environment of HTML and JavaScript? I'd love to be able to simply drag-drop components, much like building a Win UI and have the exact HTML, JavaScript code created for me. Thanks!

    Hi, I am looking write a javascript method as such called when a dropdownlist changes value function GetStuff(sender, destID){ var dest = document.getElementById(destID); this.PageMethods.GetStuffs(sender, dest, null, null); } GetStuffs() is in the Codebehind as follows: [WebMethod] public static void GetStuffs(object sender, object dest) { DropDownList s = sender as DropDownList; DropDownList d = dest as DropDownList; d.Items.Add(new ListItem(s.SelectedValue)); } I have a break point set at the method and alerts in the GetStuff() jscript method fire up until the PageMethod call, at which nothing happens. I have set OnSuccess and OnFailure methods up with alerts and they don't get fired. Any thoughts? Am I doing something inherently wrong?

    Hi all. Long time reader, first time writer. Quick query i hope someone can help me with. I have a webpage (php, javascript) which has a small contact form for a user to fill in and email us. Not a problem in itself, i have a working form already. Nothing noteworthy, just a form posting to a php page which sends an email. <form id="myform" name="myform" method="post" action="Mailer.php"> So user fills in form, hits submit and the page changes to mailer.php and they find their way back to where they were. What I want instead is for the to stay on the same page when submit is pushed. The form div to update itself to just say 'message sent' or something. I just want to avoid a full page refresh. Much like how on say facebook, commenting on a status only updates that div. Hope that is phrased clearly enough. Cheers all,

  • One-to-many Associations Empty Columns Issue (Ext on Rails)

    I'm playing with rewriting part of a web application in Rails + Ext. However, I'm having trouble getting an associated models' name to display in the grid view. I've been able to successfully convert several models and arrange the views nicely using tabs and Ext's layout helpers. However, I'm in the middle of setting up an association -- I've followed along with Jon Barket's tutorial on how to do this using Ext -- and I've made all the Rails and JS changes suggested (with appropriate name changes for my models,) the result being that the combo box is now being correctly populated with the names of the associated models, and changes are actually written correctly to database, BUT the data doesn't show up in the column, it's just empty. However, the correct data is there in the 'detail' view. Really just wondering if anyone else ran into this, or had any thoughts on what could be happening. Definitely willing to post code if requested; just note that (AFAIK) my changes follow the tutorial pretty closely. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: Alright, slight progress - kind of. I can get the associated model id # displaying properly -- just by modifying the column model slightly. But I can't get the virtual attribute displayed in the main table (in Jon's example it's country_name.) It still goes blank when I change the data source for that column from dataIndex: 'model[associated_model_id]' to dataIndex: 'virtual_attributes[associated_model_name]' ANOTHER UPDATE: Bump. Has NOBODY here tried integrating Ext with Rails?

  • Jquery / PhP / Joomla Select one of two comboboxes does not get updated

    I am making a Joomla component wich has 3 comboboxes/selects on the page. One with languages and 2 with subjects. If you change the language the other two get filled with the same data (the subjects in the selected language) the name of the selectbox are different but otherwise the same. I get an error for one of the subject boxes (hence the url gets red), but there is no logic in wich one will give an error. In Firebug i get the HTML back for the one without the other and this one gets updated but the other one gives nothing back. If i right click in firebug on the one that gave the error, and do "send again" it will load fine. Is their a timing problem? I use a function for this that is okay because it makes al my selectboxes. The only place where there are problems with select boxes is on the pages that has 2 selects that need to change when a third one changed. My guess it is somewhere in the Jquery where this goes wrong. And i think it has to do with timing. But i am open for all sugestions. Thanx. UPDATE: No the ID and Name fields are different.     I'm loading an external .php file using: <script type="text/javascript" src="myfile.js.php"></script> Within the external myfile.js.php file, I'm using: <?php header('content-type: text/javascript'); $message = "Test message"; ?> document.write('<?php echo $message; ?>'); Everything works fine until I change the name of myfile.js.php to just myfile.php Why does it stop working if I remove the .js part from the file name? I'm serving the file as text/javascript, plus shouldn't the .js part be ignored since .php is the actual file extension? Does anyone know why? Thanks!

  • With ASP.NET MVC, what is the preferred way to Ajaxify a simple form?

    I am trying to add a simple comments/message box to a web page. When the user enters the comment and hits submit, I would like to save this message to the database and add the comment to the list displayed on the page, without refreshing the entire page. However, I am not sure of the best way to do that these days. I am using ASP.NET MVC 2. I have been trying to read up on using JQuery for this type of functionality, but I am having problems getting a full picture of the correct approach that isn't also out of date (i.e. it is using an preview version of MVC 1 or older version of JQuery). I can either find snippets of different pieces without the information of how they work together, or the information appears to be quite dated and no longer valid. Can someone point me in the right direction for something like this? Ideally, I am looking for a simple example of the JQuery code, a snippet of any key differences in an HTML form from a normal post method, and the basic method used in the MVC Controller. I need something to help the lightbulb of understanding to turn on. :) Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Using the event click with live function leads to strange behavior when using Firefox*. With live in Firefox, click is triggered when right-clicking also! The same does not happen in Internet Explorer 7 neither in Google Chrome. Example: Without live, go to demo and try right clicking the paragraphs. A dialog menu should appear. With live, go to demo and try right clicking "Click me!". Now both dialog menu and "Another paragraph" appear. *tested with firefox 3.5.3
