  Do you have any particular style of organizing projects? For example, currently I'm creating a project for a couple of schools here in Bolivia, this is how I organized it: TutoMentor (Solution) TutoMentor.UI (Winforms project) TutoMentor.Data (Class library project) How exactly do you organize your project? Do you have an example of something you organized and are proud of? Can you share a screenshot of the Solution pane? In the UI area of my application, I'm having trouble deciding on a good schema to organize different forms and where they belong. Edit: What about organizing different forms in the .UI project? Where/how should I group different form? Putting them all in root level of the project is a bad idea.

• Simultaneously calling multiple methods on a WCF service from silverlight

  A while back I had to debug some performance issues in an existing Silverlight app, as the problem / solution was a bit obscure and finding info about it was quite tricky, I thought I’d share, maybe it can help the next person with this problem. The App On start, the app would do a number of calls to different methods on a WCF service, this to populate the UI with the necessary data. Recently one of those services had been changed and was now taking quite a bit longer than it used to. This was resulting in quite a long loading time for the whole UI, which was set up so it wouldn’t let the user interact with anything, until all the service calls had finished. First I broke out the longer running service call from the others, then removed the constraint that it had to be loaded for the UI in general to become responsive. I also added a loading indicator just on that area of the UI, thinking that the main UI would load while this particular section could keep loading independently. The Problem However this is where things started to get a bit strange. I found that even after these changes, the main UI wouldn’t activate until the long running call returned. So now, I did what I should have done to start with, I got Fiddler out and had a look at what was really happening. What I found was that, once the call to the long running service method was placed, all subsequent call were waiting for that one to return before executing. Not having really worked with WCF previously or knowing much about it in general, I was stumped… I knew of the issues where Silverlight is restricted by the browsers networking features in regards to number of simultaneous connections etc. However that just didn’t seem to be the issue here, you can clearly see in Fiddler that there’s numerous calls, but they’re just not returning. I thought of the problem maybe being in the WCF service, but the calls were really not that complicated and surely the service should be able to handle a lot more than what I was throwing at it! So I did what every developer does in this type of scenario, I hit the search engines. I did a whole bunch of searching on things like “multiple simultaneous WCF calls from Silverlight” and “Calling long running WCF services from Silverlight” etc. etc. This however, pretty much got me nowhere, I found a whole heap of resources on how to do WCF calls from Silverlight but most of them were very basic and of no use what so ever. The fog is clearing It wasn’t until I came across the term “ WCF blocking calls” and started incorporating that in my searches I started to get somewhere. Those searches quite quickly brought me to the following thread in the Silverlight forum “Long-running WCF call blocking subsequent calls” which discussed the exact problem I was facing and the best part, one of the guys there had the solution! The short answer is in the forum post and the guys answering, has also done a more extensive blog post about it called “Silverlight, WCF, and ASP.Net Configuration Gotchas” which covers it very well.  So come on what’s the solution?! I heard you ask, unless you’ve already gone to the links and looked it up ;) The Solution Well, it turns out that the issue is founded in a mix of Silverlight, Asp.Net and WCF, basically if you’re doing multiple calls to a single WCF web-service and you have Asp.Net session state enabled, the calls will be executed sequentially by the service, hence any long running calls will block subsequent ones. So why is Asp.Net session state effecting us, we’re working in Silverlight, right? We'll as mentioned earlier, by default Silverlight uses the browsers networking stack when doing service calls, hence to the WCF service, the call looks like it might as well be coming from a normal Asp.Net. To get around this, we look to a feature introduced in Silverlight 3, namely the Client HTTP Stack. The Client HTTP Stack to the rescue By using the following syntax (for example in our App.xaml.cs, Application_Startup method) WebRequest.RegisterPrefix("http://", WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp); we can set our Silverlight application to use the Client HTTP Stack, which incidentally solves our problem! By using Silverlights own networking stack, rather than that of the browser, we get around the Asp.Net - WCF session state issue. The above code specifies that all calls to addresses starting with “http://” should go through the client stack, this can actually be set more granular and you can specify it to be used only for certain domains etc. Summary The actual solution is well covered in the forum and blog posts I link to above. This post is more about sharing my experience, hopefully helping to spread the word about this and maybe make it a bit easier for the next poor guy with this issue to find the solution. • Does it make sense to use ORM in Android development?

  Does it make sense to use an ORM in Android development or is the framework optimized for a tighter coupling between the UI and the DB layer? Background: I've just started with Android development, and my first instinct (coming from a .net background) was to look for a small object-relational mapper and other tools that help reduce boilerplate clode (e.g. POJOs + OrmLite + Lombok). However, while developing my first toy application I stumbled upon a UI class that explicitly requires a database cursor: AlphabetIndexer. That made me wonder if maybe the Android library is not suited for a strict decoupling of UI and DB layer and that I will miss out on a lot of useful, time-saving features if I try to use POJOs everywhere (instead of direct database access). Clarification: I'm quite aware of the advantages of using ORM in general, I'm specifically interested in how well the Android class library plays along with it.

• How to coach a developer with dyslexia to improve his spelling and grammar capabilities?

  Just having read this question regarding developers with dyslexia, I still have some open questions on how to deal with it: I am working on a project sinc approx. 6 month with a new developer who just finished university. I see that the code quality is high, what he's missing is the ability to write texts (even short ones) in an error-free manner (both, syntax and grammar errors). He is working on some UI stuff (VS.NET 2010, ASP.NET 4) and, beside coding, has to write short text for labels, buttons, grid view headers, page titles, etc. Since even those texts have errors inside, no matter how much I try to discuss the need for a professional, text-error-free UI, he seems to not manage to get this right, although he really tries. So my questions are: Are there any hints how he (or I) should proceed to enhance the text quality? Do you know any tools (like inline spell checkers) for VS.NET to highlight syntax and grammar errors? (We are working on a German-only UI, if this is important to know)

  I am developing an app in ddd maner. So I have a complex domain model. Suppose I have a Fare object and Airline. Each Airline should contain several or much more Fares. My UI should represent Model (only small part of complex model) as a list of Airline, when the user select the Airline, I must show the list of Fares. User can filtering the Fares (by travel time, cost, etc.). What is the appropriate place for filtering Fares and Airlines? I am assuming that I should do it in ViewModel. Like: My domain model has wrapped with Service Layer - UI works with ViewModel - ViewModel obtain data from Service Layer filtering it and create DTO objects for UI. Or I'm wrong?

• Modular enterprise architecture using MVC and Orchard CMS

  I'm making a large scale MVC application using Orchard. And I'm going to be separating my logic into modules. I'm also trying to heavily decouple the application for maximum extensibility and testability. I have a rudimentary understanding of IoC, Repository Pattern, Unit of Work pattern and Service Layer pattern. I've made myself a diagram. I'm wondering if it is correct and if there is anything I have missed regarding an extensible application. Note that each module is a separate project. • Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be used from the local application?

  The background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I'm using service layer for reusing my functions. The service is calling the functions on the BL layer (correct me if I'm doing this wrong). so my desktop has 4 projects - DAL, BL, UI, WEBSERVICES. The dilemma (simple but I still need some more experienced opinions): In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL - bl.getcustomers(), or do it similar to how I call it in the webform, and call the functions from the service - webservices.getcustomers? Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform?   There are plenty of tutorials on setting up AnyConnect on an ASA unit, and a handful of links noting that IOS 12.4(15) and later support AnyConnect, but I can't seem to find any good documentation about how to setup AnyConnect on IOS; most tutorials assume you only want a clientless VPN on IOS. the best I've found is this document on Cisco's site, but it's not working for me in practice - see below. • How do I find out the Mac Address Firefox submits for Geolocation?

  I moved, but have the same router and cable box. Now when I visit Google Maps it still shows my old location. I went to the SkyhookWireless update page to update my Mac Address with my new location. The process is you put in your Mac address and it shows you the current location, and then you adjust that location and submit it. When I got the Mac Address from the status page on my router Skyhook reported that location as in Pakistan, which isn't even the correct continent (as my old or new address). I tried every other Mac address I could come up with: The cable router, the Wireless router's other Mac address, my PC's Mac address, etc. and none of them reported any location on the Skyhook page. So I am guessing that there is another Mac address, or some other bit of information that is used by Firefox when it reports to Google Maps my current location. Now that you have the back story, how do I find the Mac address or whatever information it is that Firefox (or other browsers) use to determine my Geolocation? Everything I have read online is rather vague. The next option I am considering is hooking a logging proxy onto Firefox and seeing what data it sends, but I'd rather find an easier method. • Wifi Drops Connections with WPA2-PSK

  I run a small computer lab made up of 10 computers of identical hardware and software (Dell Latitudes with Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) and I use a ZyWALL 2WG as a router/firewall. Nine of the computers connect to the router over wifi using WPA2-PSK encryption while the last one is connected by ethernet cable. I'm having a problem where any computer connected to the wi-fi occasionally drops off the network (it cannot be pinged and the client cannot ping the gateway). It only happens on the wifi side and only when the encryption is WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK. I tried using another router with a different make and model and had no problems. Thinking it could be a software error, I reset the router to factory defaults and installed the newest firmware (V4.04(AQI.8) | 04/09/2010), but still have the problem. The 802.1X log gives the following error User logout because of user disassociation. with this note WPA2-PSK:00242c582ece:logout where 00242c582ece is the mac address of the device. At this point I'm out of things to try and leads to follow. It looks like this user had the same or similar problem, but none of those proposed solutions work for me.

• Network corruption - corrupt downloads, corrupt streams, etc.

  I've been having some problems with my home LAN. Downloaded executables won't run, my remote desktop sessions keep getting interrupted due to encryption errors, flash video streams show visible corruption (both Hulu and YouTube), and I've had a couple downloads for which the md5 hashes don't match. The problem has even occurred with a couple images embedded in webpages, though that's rare enough (presumably because images are relatively smaller files). I've had this problem across two Windows machines and a Mac, so it's neither machine-specific nor at the app or OS level. Comcast claims it's nothing to do with them, and my Linksys/Cisco RV016 router is out of warranty, so I have no access to official support. When I log into my router, it shows no error packets or dropped packets received. I plugged a laptop directly into the router and was able to download a 5.5 MB file and verify its MD5 hash, which is not proof that the problem is downstream of the router, but makes it seem quite likely, since I failed to download the same file several times from two desktops (one Mac, one Windows). Could this be a wiring problem? If so, is there any way clever/elegant to determine which wiring is faulty with just software? If I can avoid tracing all the wires throughout my entire house it would make my life quite a bit easier.

• Advice needed for a home network setup (hardware & software) to handle many clients and potentially heavy traffic

  I have recently decided to re-structure the home network of our flatshare here. Here's a quick outline of the situation. I envision to have the following 4 devices connected to the router via cable: Xbox 360 IP phone Printer QNAP server (Web, File and Multimedia) We are three people living here, so on top of that there will be to 5-6 computers/mobile devices connecting as wireless clients. My goal is to be able to transfer files (when needed) between the computer and the Multimedia server, which I can reach via 360 and play on the TV. I also would like to keep a high level of security; right now I have the encryption on WPA2 and MAC filtering. I don't believe the web server will get heavy traffic, though I would like to have it responsive. Likewise, I don't have a habit of downloading via torrent etc, but I greatly appreciate my network being responsive and fast, especially when I am browsing or streaming high quality media. Now my questions are: is this setup feasible? smart? efficient? can this be improved somehow? my current router (D-Link DI624) and the previous one (DI-524) used to have spontaneous drops in network, which I find highly irritating. I don't believe in my router, especially now that it completely crashed when I was test-running the setup by transferring a large media file to server while xbox was playing music from the server, and two computers browsing the net. Do I need to get new hardware, if so, any recommendations for a reliable and fast router?

• OSX: Mimic Ubuntu IP Masquerading via iptables with ipfw

  Good day, I am attempting to replicate a setup I have between a router and an Ubuntu PC, and have the same setup working on my MacBook (10.6, Snow Leopard). First, I have a router that has a USB port. When I plug it into my Ubuntu PC, it creates an RNDIS connection, allowing me to connect to the router over the USB cable via an IP connection. When I plug it into my computer via USB, it gets assigned an IP address of 172.16.84.1, and a new adapter appears when I type ifconfig. I can then SSH into the device via ssh [email protected]. When I log in to the device, I flush the routes, then create the default route: admin@localhost> route -f admin@localhost> route add default 172.16.84.2 Now, in my Ubuntu machine, I use iptables to enable IP masquerading: root@Valhalla> sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 172.16.84.2 -j MASQUERADE Once this is all done, the router has internet access over the USB connection to my PC. I am trying to replicate this exact setup on my MacBook now (Snow Leopard), but iptables does not exist for OSX, not even a Macports version exists. I have scoured through other questions on StackOverflow that cover the usage of the ipfw command, which apparently works as a drop-in replacement for iptables. However, the syntax is significantly different, and I'm pretty much lost. Does anyone with some experience with ipfw have some suggestions on how I could accomplish this and create a NAT connection via IP masquerading like I could with my Ubuntu PC? • VPN being blocked somewhere between either my BT2700HGV and DLink DFL-210

  Hi, For some time I have been unable to get VPN working through my set up. I have a BT2700HGV Router (2 Wire Model) and as a firewall I have the Dlink DFL-210. You can't turn the firewall completely off on the BT2700HGV so I have it set to DMZplus mode for the Firewall. In theory this should then allow the VPN ports through. On the Firewall I have a series of rules set up and one is the pptp-allow rule which should allow access on the correct ports also. When I try to connect via VPN however the client machine gets an error 809. If I check the log on the Dlink firewall, I see this record: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1041315/packetdrop.PNG The laptop I am testing the vpn with is connected directly to the BT2700HGV router and I am trying to VPN from it onto 81.138.86.217. I can't work out whether I have some sort of problem in the set up of the rules on my firewall or if the BT router (even though it's in DMZplus mode) is still blocking port 1723. I read somewhere that there where problems because BTs Openzone held onto this port for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need further screen shots or information then please let me know. I wasn't able to create new tags for the router and firewall name or insert the picture in as I am new to the forum. Dom :-)

• Set up WLAN in 3-level house

  I'm having a hard time setting up the network in our house. It has three levels (basement, ground floor, first level). The WLAN is set up by an ASUS RT-N12 router which provides perfect coverage for the ground floor and the basement. However, I set up my "home office" in the basement where the signal barely arrived. So I purchased a TP-Link TL-WA901ND (300 Mbps) Access Point which I set up in the other corner of the ground floor to expand the ASUS router's range. I used the AP's Repeater mode for that. The distance between my computer and the TP-Link AP is 6-7 meters. There is a staircase going down from the ground floor to the basement so there are no solid walls between the computer and the AP. This setup mostly works (I am writing this from the basement) but it is not reliable (the signal strength sometimes goes down to ~40% of the max) sometimes so I wonder if I am doing it correctly or if there is a better way. UPDATE Tried one more thing, setting up the TP-LINK AP in Access Point mode. That way, I can make it use a different SSID. I enabled WDS/Bridge so that it expands the range of the ASUS router (see screenshot). That does not work, either, if I connect to the network set up by the TP-LINK device (PELSTER-2), I can't reach the external network (the Internet). It seems the problem always comes back to this, the TP-LINK does not have access to the external network, whatever its mode of operation.
