  I've recently become one of the most senior developers in one division of the company, and am generally the 'go-to' guy about questions in the problem domain the division works in, however I feel I'm not learning anything new. To continue to learn new things I would have to change division and work on something competely different, but then my current domain knowledge would be useless & I would start off with knowing nothing again. Obviously, this is quite a large decision & I'm hesitant to lost my 'status'; and the knowledge I do have would be useless. How do you know when you should change the programming domain you work in?

  In Expression Blend 4, I want to change the Foreground of a custom button on different states. I'm just able to change the Background and BorderBrush. Just like this: If the state is "Normal", the color of text "Button" is Black, while the state is "Pressed", the color of text "Button" is White. On Brushes Panel under Properties Panel, there're 3 properties but no Foreground property: Who can help me? I'm so perplexed. Edit I find ContentControl have a Foreground property, but ContentPresenter haven't. Wether I should use ContentControl instead of ContentPresenter?

  I am creating a UserControl in Silverlight 4 which has a watermarked background. The watermark should change depending on the underlying 'type' the UserControl is representing. The watermark is created using a Path and I have extracted all the properties into a style. I was wondering if it would be possible to change the style of the Path at runtime based on some known value. I am using MVVM and Unity. Perhaps I could bind the style somehow? Or could I inject the style when the view is created? I may have to do this with control templates, hence the reference in the title. Thanks...

  Hi.. I am having a table view with default UITableViewCell of style UITableViewCellStyleValue2. I just want to move detailTextLabel few pixels to the right. I know it makes no sense to adjust its width and height :). I am trying to set detailTextLabel's frame with my x and y value. But its not affecting the its frame. I prefer to use default UITableViewCell, in this case, over a customized cell because the default UITableViewCell automatically manages the text alignment and centering of the labels..   Using the HTML5 <canvas> element, I would like to load an image file (PNG, JPEG, etc.), draw it to the canvas completely transparently, and then fade it in. I have figured out how to load the image and draw it to the canvas, but I don't know how to change its opacity once it as been drawn. • Can I change the user id of a user on one Linux server to match another server in /etc/passwd?

  I have a Rails application that is on a virtual machine (RHEL 6) and it's database is on dedicated hardware (also RHEL 6). The app server has an NFS directory from the db server mounted and accessible. It needs to write images to that server that are uploaded via the app. Background processes on the db server need to read and write to the same directory, as they perform resizing operations on the uploaded files. Right now none of this is working, because the user ids are different between the two systems. I only need this to work for this one application, so it is way too much overhead to put an LDAP system in place. Can I simply change the user id of this one user in one of the systems, or will that cause mass chaos? UPDATE: The fix worked, at least on local devices. Unfortunately the device I have mounted to the main db server still thinks my user id is 502 instead of 506. Do I need to remount that device, or is there an NFS daemon I can stop and restart to refresh it?

• Windows 7 on an EEE PC 901 - Is it a practical change?

  I am currently running WinXP on my EEE PC 901, and I'm happy to say that it runs really well. But this did not come with out significant manipulation of the OS. Here's the basic steps I took: Install XP Modify registry to install Install bare essential drivers Relocate page file to d:\ (remember, this model has two SSD's, one roughly 3.6gb, and the other roughly 16gb - XP won't run on the bigger drive, only the smaller one) Install remaining drivers skip normal updates, install service pack 2 straight away. modify system registry to place service pack backup folder into new Program Files directory on D drive (where software is being installed). Change My Documents folder to sit on D drive. Install .net framework Install remaining updates and service pack 3 (the hidden backup folders in the c:\Windows directory are deleted after every update as well as the contents of the service pack downloads folder in order to continually free up space). I have also found that Disktrix UltimateDefrag to be brilliant at keeping the system clean and tidy. This is roughly the order I did things in. In this configuration the machine works really well. QUESTION: Can this kind of configuration be implemented with Windows 7 to achieve the same result on this machine? Thanks in advance. Dave.

  According to this answer: max length of url 257 characters for mod_rewrite? there is a maximum 255 character hard limit based on the file system for using mod_rewrite. According to the accepted answer, there are two solutions: Change the URL format of your application to a max of 255 characters between each slash. Move the Rewrite rules into the apache virtual host config and remove the REQUEST_FILENAME. I cannot use the first method, so I am trying to figure out the second. I have put the Rewrite rules into the Apache virtual host config as requested. However I cannot figure out how to remove the REQUEST_FILENAME and still have my web application framework (Dragonfly) still work. Here is the portion of the rewrite rules that I moved from .htaccess into the virtual host config file of Apache: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f [OR] # if don't want Dragonfly to process html files comment # out the line below (you may need to remove the [OR] above too). • Why does the file date always change to the current date?

  We are a programming shop, but this i snot a programming question. My boss has put an external HD on the network. It contains the 'home' folders for users on the network. He uses it to place VB projects that he wants me to work on. But no matter what date and time he places a project on the drive, the file dates(modified) always shows the current date, though nothing in the files have changed. It makes it very hard to confirm that he has given me the latest versions. (He is not a fan of version control and nothing I do will convince him different.) Any ideas why this happens and how to prevent it from happening? P.S. As I wrote this I decided to add the last accessed date to the file display, and those dates happen to show the dates I expect to see. Why is the modified date getting changed, but not the accessed date. Does the accessed date change only when the files are opened or read, changed or not? Note: I use Directory Opus 9, a replacement for windows file browser. Thanks, Marshall

• Safe mode boot with no change on screen but ongoing hard disk activity - why?

  I have a machine with a dying hard drive - bad sectors are starting to multiply :-( The first sign (24 hours ago) was that it had an unmountable boot volume. At this time, I tried booting to safe mode with command prompt, which worked, after which I rebooted normally and ran a chkdsk. It has since been working as well as I could expect, but slowly getting less reliable. So I scheduled another chkdsk on both partitions (C: - boot, D: - data), having freed up a lot of space on both partitions to give Windows a little more scope for repairs (hopefully?). I then rebooted. On reboot, it protested about the unmountable boot volume again, so I booted to safe mode. I got the same list of drivers loaded as yesterday, and then no change to the screen for the past 2 hours. However, I see a flickering hard drive indicator light - not always on, but seldom ever off. What is happening? Is the chkdsk that runs in safe mode one which produces nothing on the screen and so chkdsk could be doing its thing... or is Windows still trying (but failing) to boot into Safe Mode?

• Is there a way to force spam-filter to change their policy or remove them as recognized spam service?

  As per mxtoolbox I got 1 blacklist still active for quite sometime now. UCEPROTECTL1's is running on 7 day policy since last spam mail. This is too strict compared to the 98 other spam filters out there as per mxtoolbox. (Or at least to the other 4 that detected the problem) I have no problem with our e-mail since it is hosted locally. But our domain is hosted outside the country and it run on a different IP. I contacted them but since it is the spam-filter's rule, there's nothing to be done but wait. I do believe services like spam-filters should at lease be bounded by guidelines and standards for this matter. Otherwise problem on delivering valid (after the fix) e-mails will be disastrous. Is there a way to force UCEPROTECT to change their policy or remove them as recognized spam service? Apart from contacting them in case they do not answer. Currently they are charging for fast removal if you pay by PayPal. I'm still looking for guideline/standard on how they should operate regarding this matter. Appreciate the help.

• How to change controller numbering/enumeration in Solaris 10?

  After moving a Solaris 10 server to a new machine, the rpool disk is now c1t0d0. We have some third party applications hard coded for c0t0d0. How can I change the controller enumeration on this machine? There is no longer a c0. I've tried rebuilding the /etc/path_to_inst, but the instance numbers don't seem to match up with the controller numbers. Also, it's not clear if i86pc platforms use this file. I've tried devfsadm -C to clear the dangling links, but I'm not sure how to cause devfsadm to start numbering from 0 again (or force certain devices in the tree to a specific controller number). Next I am going to try to create the symlinks manually in /dev/dsk and rdsk to point to the correct /devices. I feel like I am going way off path here. Any suggestions? Thanks Update: This is on virtual ESXi hardware with an additional pass-through HBA. There is no controller 0 on the machine, that is for sure. devfsadm -C cleans up all the c0 device symlinks but keeps the already linked controllers at their current ids.

• Monitoring / metric collection for system collectives that change a lot in time (a.k.a. cloud)

  When your server fleet doesn't change a lot in time, like when you're using bare-metal hosting, classic monitoring and metric collection solutions (Nagios, Munin) work well. But if the number of systems varies a lot in time, and may in fact vary rapidly, classic software is more difficult to setup and use. E.g., trying to make Nagios (monitoring) keep up with a rapidly evolving cloud infrastructure can be cumbersome. Same for Munin (metric collection). It's not just the configuration, but the way the information is conveyed to the user, or displayed, is inadequate for the cloud. What are some possible alternatives that work well with the cloud? The goals are to collect and display metrics (analog to Munin), and generate alerts when certain metrics go out of bounds or when certain services are unavailable (analog to Nagios), and do everything in a cloud-friendly manner. Some cloud providers offer monitoring / metric collection as services, but not always, and if you use more than one provider you don't want to become too dependent of just one vendor. So provider-independent solutions are required. EDIT: I am asking this question in a general fashion - not limited to any given cloud infrastructure (like OpenStack), but in the general case of using arbitrary cloud providers.

Out of my depth, but I am a loyal foot soldier. A problem I encounter rather too often is a user double-clicks on a file in Explorer and then either gets no action, or the wrong program to run. It's a case of a missing or out-of-date file association. The current cure is to temporarily upgrade the user from Standard to Power, do the FA switch and then change back. As Winnie would whine, 'Oh, bother!' At any rate, I thought I'd ask here. Is there a method/program to run without the rigamarole FROM the Standard Users account on the workstation to edit/add a file association? I assume the program route would involve RunAs. I 'believe' most of the workstations run the RunAs service, but I could be wrong. I understand that's required, if there is to be a solution. Any help accepted with thanks.   I have recently deployed a Remote Desktop Host server that functions as a remote Microsoft Office 2010 work space for users. In part of the locking down of this server I have installed all programs on the D: drive and, through the use of Group Policy, hidden all the drives on the server from standard users. In addition to hiding these drives I am not allowing users to save anything locally (on the server) or open Libraries. However one of the functions of the server is to provide the Outlook client. Often users will have the .PST file stored on a network location and want to open this in Outlook. Can I change the default action or location that File Open Open Outlook Data File looks or tries to pull the file from? The default location seems to be under Users / Libraries. When click 'Open' you get a warning: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Clicking OK drops the user into a small menu that shows attached network drives under Computer. Can I instead have the 'Open' click drop the users in a defined network drive or just open computer and allow them to select a share? I don't want them to see the error message. A solution that looks to have been used for Office 2000/03 is: Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Outlook Value name: ForceOSTPath Value type: REG_EXPAND_SZ Value: path to your storage folder I am not sure if there is a better way to do this now OR if this even works with Office 2010.

• Is it possible to change "working directory" of XeTeX?

  Using XeTeX there are many working files that get created in process of producing the pdf, and they litter the directory where my main .tex file is. Is it possible to change the working directory of XeTeX so that it stores all these scratch files in some other directory, out of the way? There is a previous question on Superuser.com that discusses a utility that cleans up the working files by deleting them after they're produced: http://superuser.com/questions/95712/how-to-avoid-littering-ones-tex-directories-with-intermediate-files That solution doesn't work for me since I'm using XeTeX, but also it seems like it would be preferable to simply be able to designate a "scratch" directory where all working files are saved. I haven't been able to find any info on how to do it though. Is there a way? (My question is prompted partly because of the fact that I often work with files in a directory that is shared using DropBox, so it creates a lot of unnecessary traffic if files are getting created and destroyed willy nilly. I don't know if it affects speed in any way, but the idea of having a separate working directory that is not shared/replicated by DropBox would be a cleaner solution, even if I could use the method suggested in the earlier thread.)

  CentOS 5.x The short version: Is there a way to change the encoding format for an existing CSR "Country Code" field from UTF8 to Printable String? The long version: I've got a CSR generated from a product using standard java security providers (jsse/jce). Some of the information in the CSR uses UTF8 Strings (which I understand is the preferred encoding requirement as of December 31, 2003 - RF 3280). The certificate authority I'm submitting the CSR to explicitly requires the Country Code to be specified as a PrintableString. My CSR has it listed as a UTF8 string. I went back to the latest RFC - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5280.txt. It seems to conflict specifically on countryName. Here's where it gets a little messy... The countryName is part of the relative DN. The relative DN is defined to be of type DirectoryString, which is defined as a choice of teletexString, printableString, universalString, utf8String, or bmpString. It also more specifically defines countryName as being either alpha (upper bound 2 bytes) or numeric (upper bound 3 bytes). Furthermore, in the appendix, it refers to the X520countryName, which is limited to be only a PrintableString of size 2. So, it is clear why it doesn't work. It appears that the certificate authority and Sun/Java do not agree on their interpretation of the requirements for the countryName. Is there anything I can do to modify the CSR to be compatible with the CA?
