Hello, I don't know if this will make any sense to you; but here goes. When I send an email and I get a response, more often than not, in the 'to:' is my email address. However, my email address also ends up in the 'from' column.The 'reply-from' address is nowhere to be found;so I don't have any address with which I can send my reply, as both of them have just my email address. What am I doing wrong here? Is there some set-up in my TOOLOPTIONS set-up incorrectly? The set-up in OPTIONS is pretty difficult to understand and it doesn't offer any 'to' or 'reply-from' choices. This is critical because I just cannot answer my emails because there is no one I can send a reply to. Please, please try to help me. assignment vs std::swap and merging and keeping duplicates in seperate object

Say I have two std::set<std::string>s. The first one, old_options, needs to be merged with additional options, contained in new_options. I can't just use std::merge (well, I do, but not only that) because I also check for doubles and warn the user about this accordingly. To this effect, I have void merge_options( set<string> &old_options, const set<string> &new_options ) { // find duplicates and create merged_options, a stringset containing the merged options // handle duplicated the way I want to // ... old_options = merged_options; } Is it better to use std::swap( merged_options, old_options ); or the assignment I have? Is there a better way to filter duplicates and return the merged set than consecutive calls to std::set_intersection and std::set_union to detect dupes and merge the sets? I know it's slower than one traversal and doing both at once, but these sets are small (performance is not critical) and I trust the Standard more than I trust myself.

Does it make sense to study COBOL?

I have had a talk with a friend of mine about the relative vulnerability of different types of IT workers to unexpected unemployment (e.g. layoffs, company going out of business, obsolete skills etc.) as it seems COBOL developers (or maintainers?) seems very secure in their positions, regardless of the state if the economy or even how good they are. With so much critical COBOL code being around on the one side and the deminishing number of COBOL know-hows on the other , it actually makes sense to recommend someone starting their way in the IT world and looking for a relativity secure job to study and intern in COBOL! what do you think ?

Performance hit from C++ style casts?

I am new to C++ style casts and I am worried that using C++ style casts will ruin the performance of my application because I have a real-time-critical deadline in my interrupt-service-routine. I heard that some casts will even throw exceptions! I would like to use the C++ style casts because it would make my code more "robust". However, if there is any performance hit then I will probably not use C++ style casts and will instead spend more time testing the code that uses C-style casts. Has anyone done any rigorous testing/profiling to compare the performance of C++ style casts to C style casts? What were your results? What conclusions did you draw?

MAMP and WordPress - Theme is gone

Hey SuperUsers, I hope this is the right section to post this kind of question. If it's not, I am sorry. But to my question: I created a working WordPress blog, running locally with MAMP Pro. I wanted to share my site, and thought I would go public with it, but self hosted. I signed up at DynDNS for my domain and got it working. People can connect, myself included of course. But here goes my problem: Everytime I try to access my website (**.dyndns.info:8888), I am able to access it, but the theme and pictures are gone, so it's only pure text with some links. I can provide a picture of the website if you want it? But what is it I am doing wrong? I tried to enable Web Sharing, but that didn't make a difference. Here i have a column chart of binomial distribution, showing how many times you can expect to roll a six in 235 dice rolls: Note: You could also call it a binomial mass distribution for p=1/6, n=235 Now that graph is kinda squooshed. i'd like to change the Minimum and Maximum on the horizontal axis. i'd like to change them to: Minimum: 22 Maximum: 57 Meaning i want to zoom in on this section of the graph: Bonus points to the reader who can say how the numbers 22 and 57 were arrived at If this were a Scatter graph in Excel, i could adjust the horizintal axis minimum and maximum as i desired: Unfortunately, this is a Column chart, where there are no options to adjust the minimum and maximum limits of the ordinate axis: i can do a pretty horrible thing to the graph in Photoshop, but it's not very useful afterwards: Question: how to a change the x-axis minimum and maximum of a Column chart in Excel (2007)?

How should I manage memory in my mission critical embedded application? I found some articles with google, but couldn't pinpoint a really useful practical guide. The DO-178b forbids dynamic memory allocations, but how will you manage the memory than? preallocate everything in advance and send a pointer to each function that needs allocation? Allocate it on the stack? Use a global static allocator (but then it's very similar to dynamic allocation)? Answers can be of the form of regular answer, reference to a resource, or reference to good opensource embedded system for example. clarification: The issue here is not whether or not memory management is availible for the embedded system. But what is a good design for an embedded system, to maximize reliability.

Accurate way to check latency between Server ?

Hi, First of all, I hope my post are is posted in the right section . Below are something i got confused hope you one can help. My business partner 's IP server are in: Sanjose, CA , and I am looking for a datacenter which give the least latency to that IP. I found 2 . 1st datcenter is in San Francisco, CA . 2nd data center is in Newyork. Then I do the ping from each datacenter to the my partner's IP. 1st datcenter's result: 75ms 2nd datacenter's result: 2ms I 've done multiple time, 2nd datacenter always give better result. Now my question is: Isn't the 1st datacenter suppose to give better result, since their location are closer ? How come the result produce different, what is the accurate way to check latency ? I have one windows server 2008 r2, and that server has 4 network interfaces (3 private, 1 internet connection). I would like to share internet connection with other 3 networks. Windows server firewall should make logs of data that is transfered. It should not be possible to connect directly to private networks from internet. How could I do it? Edit: I tried with NAT in RRAS, but it doesn't work. Here is the configuration: Server: IP private:192.168.0.1 IP public: xx.xx.xx.xx client IP:192.168.0.2 Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 Public and private interface added in NAT section of RRAS.

I need to design an application that protects some data in a database against root attack. It means, that even if the aggressor takes control over the machine where data is stored or machine with the application server, he can't read some business critical data from the database. This is a customer's requirement. I'm going to encrypt data with some assymetric algorithm and I need some good ideas, where to store private keys, so that data is secure as well as the application usability was quite comfortable? We can assume, for simplicity, that only one key pair is used.

How Do I Delete Misnamed Tagged Directory Already Committed?

I'm new to using the SVN system and having hard time figuring out how to delete files uploaded mistakenly. What I've done: Committed the trunk folder with right clicking on "SVN Commit" Right clicked and choose "TortoiseSVN" - "Branch/Tag" In the section of "To path:" in the "Branch/Tag - Tortoise" window, I typed /*mydirectory*/tags/*1.0.11* where 1.0.11 was supposed to be 1.0.1.1 After realizing 1.0.11 was a mistake, to remove the directory, I right clicked on the 1.0.11 folder in Windows and selected "TortoiseSVN" - "Delete" It deleted the folder in Windows but does not delete the folder in the remote server. According to this page,http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2092344/how-do-i-delete-a-wrongly-tagged-directory-in-svn, a command can be used and I tried to type svn in the command prompt window but it gives svn is not recognized as an internal or external command. This should be a very basic question but I could not find relevant pages. Some pages suggest to use revert but I've already committed 1.0.1.1 so I'm afraid doing revert causes the newest one to be deleted. Thanks for your information.

We are running multiple webshops in a SAAS application where it is possible that users are adding products, buying products and paying for products online, and so on... When deploying we want to do this as clean as possible, so that not payments or orders or other critical data will be lost. We have a deployment scenario set up using phing (amazing tool!) but we are missing one crucial step being the "locking of the live site" while deploying. What is a possible way to lock a live site and bring it back online after deploying?

Project Server 2010 site creation - the database connection string is not available

I am trying to get Project Server 2010 up and running on a Win Server 2008 box. I've got Sharepoint 2010 installed and Project Server 2010 installed. I open SharePoint Central Administration, then I go to Manage Service Applications Project Server Service Application. It looks like there is a site under the "Sharepoint - 80" section, but the Status says "Failed - see the Application event Log". When I click on the site and select "Retry" I get the same thing. In the event viewer, I see an error with SharePoint Foundation Search as the Source - it reads: Could not create a database session. Context: Application '276504a6-93b1-4c1f-a900-fd6ed9d5c117' Details: The database connection string is not available. (0xc0041228) How can I fix this? Is there some configuration I missed?

Can I use memcpy in C++ to copy classes that have no pointers or virtual functions

Say I have a class, something like the following; class MyClass { public: MyClass(); int a,b,c; double x,y,z; }; #define PageSize 1000000 MyClass Array1[PageSize],Array2[PageSize]; If my class has not pointers or virtual methods, is it safe to use the following? memcpy(Array1,Array2,PageSize*sizeof(MyClass)); The reason I ask, is that I'm dealing with very large collections of paged data, as decribed here, where performance is critical, and memcpy offers significant performance advantages over iterative assignment. I suspect it should be ok, as the 'this' pointer is an implicit parameter rather than anything stored, but are there any other hidden nasties I should be aware of?

Remove Pictures Entry from Start Menu

I want to remove the Pictures item from the topmost section of the Windows-7 Start Menu, but there is no option to do so in the Tasbar and Start Menu Properties dialog. Expected: Actual: There are options to remove the other items (recorded tv, music, videos, etc.), and the option is present in the registry (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartPanel\MyPics\Hide\CheckedValue=dword:0), but it just doesn’t reflect in the Start Menu (Pictures is still shown while the others are removed). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Could it be a bug? (It's strange that only this one Start Menu item is broken.)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service won't install

Hi all, Problem description: -I'm running Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to install the FTP service following this procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323384 -At step 7 of the above procedure I provide Windows Small Business Server 2003 disc1 and the installation completes successfully (note: the installer looks for 'ftpctrs2.dll' but the disk contains 'FTPCTRS2.DL_' and seems happy with it as per allowed file types). -However the installation silently fails because if I go back to the list of windows components, FTP is still unchecked, and if I open IIS, the FTP sites section is missing. Question: -How can I force the installation of FTP? Additional info: I don't think this is related but will mention it in case I'm wrong and it is: before I could attempt to install FTP I ran into, and fixed, the issue described in this solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838860 Thanks.

Distributed website server redundancy

Assume a website infrastructure is very complicated and is fully distributed (probably like most large web companies). Am I right in thinking that although there are all these extra web servers to handle multiple client requests, there is still a single "machine" whereby users must enter? I am guessing this machine will be the one physically associated to the IP address? I ask because I need to know whether, in places where distributed systems exist, there is still a single point of failure- usually the control node or, in this example, the machine connected to the public internet? Surely there cannot be two machines connected to the internet, as they would have to have different IP addresses? This "machine" may not be a server per se, but maybe it is a piece of cisco equipment. I just need to know whether, in the real world, these distributed systems still have a particular section where they depend on the integrity of one electronic device?

How much trust can I put in a standard computer running windows? To what certainty can I be sure it will run my code the way I wrote it? How can I be sure that if I declare something like "int j = 5;", j will alway be 5? Is there a way to measure trust in a standard x86 computer system? What kind of protections are there to make sure that j = 5? I'm thinking about critical systems where nothing can be off even by one bit and everything must run exactly the way it was written to run.

Installing ethernet controller driver after clean windows XP install

I've been having trouble getting internet access through an ethernet connection since doing a fresh install of windows XP. It appears that I'm missing the driver for the ethernet controller. Looking in 'device manager' under the network adapters section there's an apparently working '1394 Net Adaptor' but under unknown devices there's the question-marked ethernet controller, which I believe is what I want the driver for. I found an old cd that contains the driver for it (Realtek 8139 or some 81xx). There's no setup tool, but only 3 files (a .cat file, .inf file and .sys file). I've tried right-clicking on the .inf file and using 'install' and also tried just copying the .sys file into the system32/drivers folder but neither have got me anywhere after restarting. The ethernet controller is still listed in 'unknown devices'. EDIT: I've also tried updating the driver in the device manager, pointing it at the folder containing the driver, but this hasn't worked either. Any ideas? Thanks

How secure is using "Normal password" for SMTP with connection type = STARTTLS?

I'm using an email client for the first time - for the most part I've always used gmail via the web interface. Now I'm setting up thunderbird to connect to an email server of my own (on my own server, own domain name, etc). The server machine (and the email server on it) was preconfigured for me. Now i figured out away by which I'm able to send and receive email, but I noticed that in the outgoing and incoming servers section, the connection type was STARTTLS (and not SSL/TLS), and the Authentication Type was "Normal Password". Does this mean that the password will be sent across in plain text? I'm very paranoid about security - its the only way that it works for me. Can someone please post links that explain how SMTP (my outbound server) and IMAP (my inbound server) servers work, and what connection type means what? Thanks! Combine OS partion with data partition on NAS4Free/FreeNAS

I recently built a NAS4Free (formerly FreeNAS) machine using a 256MB (yes, MB) USB drive for the OS. When I did the original install, I had the bright idea of making the OS partition just big enough for the OS and a then creating a second partition using the remainder of the drive to store stuff pertaining to the OS. I never really found a use for the data partition and I ended up running out of space on the OS partition, so now I'd like to combine the partitions into a single partition. Is this something that is possible to do while everything is up and running? If it comes down to it, I can take down the machine and do a fresh install of the OS using the entire space of the USB drive, but I'd like to use this as an opportunity to better familiarize myself with FreeBSD/UNIX type systems. If this is possible, will it interfere with the NAS4Free things? The data partition shows up in the web interface under the disks section. If I end up manually changing the partitions, I'd be concerned with NAS4Free getting confused by the missing partition.

What does "Windows is not a real-time operating system" mean?

I came across an application called LatencyMon, that apparently does latency monitoring. I have always understood the more of a load you put on the processor, the less responsive, or more latent, the system becomes. However, in the second section of the LatencyMon page, the first sentence says, "Windows is not a real-time operating system". That got me thinking. I mean, is this any different from any other operatiing system like linux, unix, or OS X? Are there any "Real-Time" operating systems? Or is the merely a marketing scheme to get you to buy their product? EDIT: Also, are there any examples of RTOS's out there?

server reboot has caused django project to lose directories

A fully functional Django project as well as a couple in development have all broken following the rebooting of the server. In addition to some pieces of the Django admin returning errors as well as missing .js and .css files, I'm getting errors like this when viewing pages that include images uploaded through the admin. Exception Type: TemplateSyntaxError Exception Value: Caught an exception while rendering: (2, 'No such file or directory') Exception Location: /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/django/template/debug.py in render_node, line 81 Python Executable: /usr/bin/python Python Version: 2.6.4 So did the reboot stomp on some part of my configuration/setup or did it fail to restart a critical piece?
