• How do I autorun applications after mounting a TrueCrypt container?

  I would like my TrueCrypt virtual drive to act as a newly inserted USB drive or CD/DVD by executing commands in the partition's autorun.inf file. I've read several suggestions online including creating a .bat file or installing software so Windows will think this is a CD, but I'd like to know the easiest and least intrusive way to pull it off. i.e. I want to keep from installing or messing with the host computer as much as possible, as this is intended to be a fully portable drive.

Then at some point in time a set of machines shuts down according to their log. I was not able to pinpoint an exact event when the machines fail, they do it at nearly the same time. The last time a duplicity job was running, this was not always the case however. • How can I mount an AES-128 encrypted DMG file using the NTFS file system under Windows XP?

  I found HFSExplorer, which can handle encrypted DMG files, but it only supports HFS, and the DMG I want to open is NTFS. I can't just use any image mounter since the DMG file is encrypted, and I don't want to need to copy it over to my main hard drive first. (The DMG is on an external hard drive.) If copying it is the only way, however, I'd be willing to settle for that, but I'd rather just leave it on the external hard drive in an encrypted form.

• Cannot find network path for computer in workgroup of home Windows XP PCs

  VMWare Workstation 6.5 is running as an app on a Windows Vista 64bit PC host. Thanks to Workstation we have 2 guest machines running: TerriVM and MattVM (both of these run Windows XP SP2). We are attempting to get virtual networking configured so we can access the files of both of these VM guest systems from other real PCs connected to this home network. We think we are close but we can't quite get it right... Here is what we've done so far: * On VM Workstation, we set "Host Virtual Network Mapping" to use VMnet0 with the setting "Bridge to an automatically chosen adapter". * On each VM guest (i.e. using Windows explorer on XP), we rightmouse on the C disk, click "Sharing" tab, set shareName to "C_Disk" and check both boxes labeled "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files". Symptoms: On "JohnsRealXP" PC, we go to Windows Explorer, My Computer, Map Network Drive, type into Folder textbox: \TerriVM\C_Disk and assign drive letter T. We see all the folders on this shared drive and can open files on them. So that is good. On same "JohnsRealXP" PC, we go to Windows Explorer, My Computer, Map Network Drive, type into Folder textbox: \MattVM\C_Disk and assign drive letter M. We get a message box "_The network path \mattvm\C_Disk could not be found_". Alternatively, we type just \mattvm\ into the Folder box and click "Browse" and get a dialog box where we drill down from "Entire Network" to "Microsoft Windows Network" to "Workgroup" where both TerriVM and MattVM are listed as computers on the network. Clicking the + sign next to MattVM gives an hourglass and never enables the OK button and I have to cancel. In summary, I think we've attempted to share both of these virtual machines using the same techniques and connect to them in similar fashion, but one connects properly and the other machine can be seen but no shared resources on it can be accessed. Can anyone suggest something possibly overlooked or something to try? Thanks so much in advance.

  I am using mac pro.I copied some data from my pen drive to my mac and i deleted the content by moving it to trash.After that when i see the info of pen drive it give more value than the original value.If i cleaned the content of the trash only i am able to see the correct value of pen drive and able to copy data. Is mac has been designed like that or is there any other way to delete other than using "move to trash" option? Thanks.

• SBS 2003 boot stalls at acpitabl.dat

  I have a SBS 2003 server running for 3 year without any problems, and few days ago it freezes during the boot. System is using two 500 Gb drives in RAID1 (Intel Matrix 7.5) After trying to load in safe mode, boot stops on acpitabl.dat. First idea was that there is a problem with RAID altough disk status was OK, and RAID status was Rebuild. I tried to boot with each drive, and one gives me the same problem, and the other drive is failing to load. Took both drives out, and checked it on a different machine. One drive is dead, other is without any problems. Returned the good drive back in SBS 2003 with changed status to Degraded, but the problem is still the same. I also have a clean SBS 2003 copy installed on this drive (previous installation), which loads smooth and quick. So, I believe the main problem is this installed version of SBS 2003. Did not make any hardware changes, did not make any updates (not sure about any automatic windows updates lately). Since there are tons posts about this problem, and no clear solution, I am trying to figure how to repair SBS 2003 installation, since there are some installed programs on this installation which I cannot re-install without additional issues.

• WinPE, Startnet.CMD and passing variables to second batch file not working

  I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something). I'm not an expert batch file maker either. I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that Updates, changes are easier for me to make. I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE. The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned. The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes. My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE. I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it. I use a variable to capture the letter drive. I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it. When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply. The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file. In my test, I can get this to work over and over. When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work. I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller. My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specified. • Change dead disk in DPM 2010

  I was backuping data on an 1Gb hard drive with DPM 2010. This disk died but I replace it with another 1Gb hard drive. But I don't find how to recreate data structure on this new drive from previous protection group. Protection group were red. I delete the disk in "administration disks", now protection group are green but they don't save data and I don't see any menu to change the disk destination. how to do ? thanks

• Unable to boot from SATA II and vista

  Trying to use a SATA II hard drive on toshiba satellite notebook. The hard drive has vista installed on it from another notebook. After inserting the hard drive, the boot starts.. shows "Microsoft windows" the progress bar, and reboots, in a loop. The existing hard drive is SATA with xp on it. The replacement one is SATA II with vista on it. I wanna troubleshoot. But, don't know where to start. Any help is much appreciated!!

• How to burn a data DVD in Windows XP

  I am trying to burn a data DVD (DVD+R) in Windows XP SP3 on a Dell desktop computer. The computer has a licensed copy of Nero 6.3. Nero indicates that an update to version 6.6 is available, but after following the link provided, it redirects me to the Nero website to purchase the upgrade. I'm not interested in doing this. After creating a project in Nero 6.3, inserting a blank DVD+R and trying to start burning the data DVD, Nero indicates that I should insert an appropriate disk into the drive. It does not seem to detect the blank DVD+R. I downloaded infrarecorder and cdrtfe from Sourceforge. Neither of these programs worked either. They both indicated that I should insert the correct media, with cdrtfe saying there is no disk in the drive. I tried with another blank DVD +R with the same effect. I inserted a CDR containing data into the drive and the Windows read read this CDR without a problem. I have no reason to believe that the drive is faulty. I am aware that Windows XP itself is not able to burn DVDs. However, it seems that three third-party software programs are not able to burn a data DVD in Window XP. The specifications provided in Nero indicate that DVD+R is compatible with the drive. How can I burn a backup data DVD in Windows XP?

  Fans and transformers which are inside the server case create magnetic and electric fields. Electric fields can be easily shielded, but what about magnetic fields, they can only be shielded with high cost materials like mu metal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu-metal If a hard drive is installed too close to an intense transformer field, how is the magnetically stored information on the ferromagnetic surfaces of the disk kept safe? Even if drives are shielded, where are the limits? Is there some technical investigation or recommendation from manufacturers about this? (I never heard about something and never had any problem but I am interested in some facts. This is much preferred over what you believe or a habit you developed. Please try to give some solid infromation.) I have built and repaired many servers and sometimes I did put the harddrive on top of the power supply. Edit: This question is not about frequencies that could affect the drive via the power or data connectors of the drive, those are electronically decoupled and that's another question. Edit 2: The wikipedia page states that the motor inside the drive is shielded with mu metal. It is obvious that manufactureres have to take care of this. This question is about such influences from outside the drive.

• increase performance of virtual machines on the 27" imac

  I'm using a 27" iMac (i7, 8GB RAM) at work and normally run two or three virtual machines at the same time, which hurts the performance of each virtual machine. I've learned on these forums the best way to increase virtual machine performance (aside from RAM) is to have them running on a separate hard drive from the one the OS is on. Of course with the iMac you can only have one hard drive and not even an SAS or solid state drive (well you could probably take it apart and put one in yourself but I wouldn't be permitted to do that). That being said, do you think it would help to run one or more virtual machines from a firewire external drive (or a usb 2.0)? Thanks for your input!

  I have my Box Folder on a different drive ( D: ) than my Operating System Drive ( C: ) I follow these instructions to set the local folder on the second drive. https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/200852947-How-Can-I-Change-the-Default-Folder-Location-for-Box-Sync- I had to format and reinstall Windows 7, leaving the other drive (D: ) untouched. now i reinstalled Box Sync, and directed it to the same location where i already have all my files. However, Box Sync renamed the folder to (Box ([email protected]) ) as a bckup, and is downloading everything again. As i have like 30Gb of files, and it takes many hour to download them, i just want to use the files that i already have in my local disk. i tried copying all files again to the new local Box Folder, but files started to get duplicated. Is there any way to avoid downloading everything again each time i reinstall my OS ? Thanks

  I recently replaced a failing SCSI drive in a Windows 2000 server with an IDE drive. I made an image of the SCSI drive and Ghosted it. The purpose of the machine was to give out DHCP at one location and host a couple of files. When I restarted the machine with the new drive, DHCP appears to be working fine, but I cannot get to any of the shares. Instead, I get the following message when attempting to navigate using Explorer. Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect It appears that this machine is not communicating with the main domain controller. Changes to user accounts (performed on the domain controller) are not replicated on this machine.

• How can I connect to my Airport Extreme Shared Disk using Windows?

  I have a shared disk attached to my Airport Extreme, which I can connect to remotely in OS X through the finder via command - k, and entering in the proper address: afp://test.dyndns.org:1111 1111 being the port I've reserved for the disk in the AE port mapping. This is such a great feature, but I don't always have access to a Mac. My question is how can I connect to this drive via Windows XP? Please note, that the shared drive is a Drobo FS and formatted to handle both Windows and Mac OS. I've tried mapping a network drive via My Computer - Tools - Map Network Drive and entering: \\test.dyndns.org:1111\Drobo-Name I've also tried Start - Run and entering the same, both with and without the port #.

How can I recover my zpool if this ATA drive fails for any reason, but assume my RAIDZ vdev SATA drives remain intact? Should I also use at least a mirror configuration for that?

• Sony VGN-NR260E "External Device Boot"

  [A LITTLE BACKGROUND] On all modern Dell computers pushing the F12 on bios boot will allow for a screen that lets you choose what boot option you need. For example if I want to boot off of a USB flash drive to boot into a live Linux distribution in order to clean virus's on netbooks that do not have CD drives to boot from I would push F12 and choose USB device from the list of options. If this does not show up then I can always go to the F2 bios setup and choose flash drive to be the first option. When I restart the computer it will boot into the flash device. I understand that I can purchase an external USB CD drive and then boot from that. I do not want to use that option. The reason for using a flash device instead of a CD is: A: This USB flash device has several different boot OS's on it that are used. B: The antivirus disks are updated often and burning cd's and throwing away others is wasteful compared to simply updating a flash drive. There is nothing wrong with the flash drive. It works perfect on many other PC's. [PROBLEM] Booting this flashdrive has been working for years on hundreds of computers... I just have this ONE computer that I cannot figure out how to get it to boot on... I have a Sony Vaio that will not boot to this device. I've tried pushing every key combo I can think of (F12, Esc, Del, F10...) and none of these key combinations will bring up the boot menu. I chose F2 and went into the bios and changed the first boot device to USB flash device. This did not work either. There is an astrix next to the device and the note states: "This Drive is available when External Device Boot is Enable." [WHAT I NEED] I need to know How to enable External Device Boot on the Sony Vaio VGN-NR260E laptop. OR How to bring up the Boot Menu to allow me to boot off a flash device. • Why does a Windows 7 installation grow so seriously and how to shring it?

  I store all my data and the most of applications (those legally available in "portable" versions) on drive D: and only use drive C: for the Windows system and some heavily integrated applications like MS Office, Visual Studio, Adobe Reader, Flash Player etc. When I was using Windows XP, 50 GiB drive C: was more than enough. Now, as I've mitigated to Windows 7, it hardly is. Yesterday as I've checked, 7 GiBs were free on drive C:. Then I've installed fresh Windows updates (which were just some tens of MiBs to download) and checked again: now there are only 2 GiBs free. Where have 5 GiBs gone? PS: Don't be surprised my system installation takes actually that much: I've got Visual Studio and SQL Server with complete offline documentation library, but that doesn't explain where does free space disappear on simple Windows updates. PPS: I use an augmented CCleaner version to clean my PC every day, so there are for sure no temporary internet files of recycle bin trash files taking the place.

• How to determine if a file has been backed up?

  I try to consolidate old drives to new ones of larger capacity. Sometimes files have been renamed, but are otherwise identical. Sometimes an old directory has just a few more files in it than a newer directory with the same name. Sometimes a file has the same name but the size differs. So I often find myself asking the question: Are there any files on this old drive or directory that I haven't already copied to the new drive? I just want to know that I have the files, I don't want to try and sync stuff automatically (Syncing tools tend to just sync, creating duplicate folder structures and other problems, so I prefer to do it by hand). Basically, if an old drive has a file called "foo.bar" ten directories deep, and my new big drive has an identical file called "oldstuff.zip" in the root, I just want a "yes you have it" or "no, unique files exist". Is there a free tool, a script or a quick and easy method (Mac/Unix or Windows) to get the answer?

• Truecrypt in place decryption. Is this possible?

  I want to decrypt my entire partition and turn it back into standard NTFS. I encrypted a large partition on my 1TB drive before I took it through the airport. For this I used the in place method on truecrypt for win7. I'm on a mac now and there doesn't seem to be any way to decryppt the drive in place. It mounts fine, but I don't want to buy another drive just so I can shift files around. The drive is hooked up via USB. Would this be a problem?

  I have 10 workstations with large monitors that have USB slots and several card readers built in. The card readers cannot be disabled and will map to drive letters when I image the computers. I go into Disk Management and delete the drive mappings and add mappings to a single folder in C:\ with a folder for each slot. I have to do this because of scripts that run that are expecting specific letter drive mappings to network resources. Is there a way to script the deleting and adding of drive mappings instead of having to use the Disk Management GUI manually on each workstation? The workstations are running XP Professional.
