• Fastest XML parser for small, simple documents in Java

  I have to objectify very simple and small XML documents (less than 1k, and it's almost SGML: no namespaces, plain UTF-8, you name it...), read from a stream, in Java. I am using JAXP to process the data from my stream into a Document object. I have tried Xerces, it's way too big and slow... I am using Dom4j, but I am still spending way too much time in org.dom4j.io.SAXReader. Does anybody out there have any suggestion on a faster, more efficient implementation, keeping in mind I have very tough CPU and memory constraints? [Edit 1] Keep in mind that my documents are very small, so the overhead of staring the parser can be important. For instance I am spending as much time in org.xml.sax.helpers.XMLReaderFactory.createXMLReader as in org.dom4j.io.SAXReader.read [Edit 2] The result has to be in Dom format, as I pass the document to decision tools that do arbitrary processing on it, like switching code based on the value of arbitrary XPaths, but also extracting lists of values packed as children of a predefined node. [Edit 3] In any case I eventually need to load/parse the complete document, since all the information it contains is going to be used at some point. • How long is too long for a script to execute?

  What is the max time do you think is acceptable for a web script (PHP for example) to execute before it starts to become an annoyance for the user (on average)? I always thought that if the user has to wait more than 1 second for the page to load (this of course after images and css have been cached..this rule really only applies for subsequent requests) they would start to get annoyed.

• Which Hadoop API version should I use?

  In the latest Hadoop Studio the 0.18 API of Hadoop is called "Stable" and the 0.20 API of Hadoop is called "Unstable". The distribution that comes from Yahoo is a 0.20 (with yahoo patches), which is apparently "the way to go". From cloudera they state the 0.20 (with cloudera patches) is also stable. Now given the fact that we'll start coding a new Hadoop project in the next few weeks; which API should we use and which Hadoop distribution (Apache, Cloudera, Yahoo, ...) should we use? • Parallel.Foreach loop creating multiple db connections throws connection errors?

  Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication I wanted to get my code running in parallel, so I changed my foreach loop to a parallel foreach loop. It seemed simple enough. Each loop connects to the database, looks up some stuff, performs some logic, adds some stuff, closes the connection. But I get the above error? I'm using my local sql server and entity framework (each loop uses it's own context). Is there some problem with connecting multiple times using the same local login or something? How did I get around this? I have (before trying to covert to a parallel.foreach loop) split my list of objects that I am foreach looping through into four groups (separate csv files) and run four concurrent instances of my program (which ran faster overall than just one, thus the idea for parallel). So it seems connecting to the db shouldn't be a problem? Any ideas? • Assembly Load and loading the "sub-modules" dependencies - "cannot fild the file specified"

  There are several questions out there that ask the same question. However the answers they received I cannot understand, so here goes: Similar questions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1874277/dynamically-load-assembly-and-manually-force-path-to-get-referenced-assemblies ; http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22012/loading-assemblies-and-its-dependencies-closed The question in short: I need to figure out how dependencies, ie References in my modules can be loaded dynamically. Right now I am getting "The system cannot find the file specified" on Assemblies referenced in my so called modules. I cannot really get how to use the AssemblyResolve event... The longer version I have one application, MODULECONTROLLER, that loads separate modules. These "separate modules" are located in well-known subdirectories, like appBinDir\Modules\Module1 appBinDir\Modules\Module2 Each directory contains all the DLLs that exists in the bin-directory of those projects after a build. So the MODULECONTROLLER loads all the DLLs contained in those folders using this code: byte[] bytes = File.ReadAllBytes(dllFileFullPath); Assembly assembly = null; assembly = Assembly.Load(bytes); I am, as you can see, loading the byte[]-array (so I dont lock the DLL-files). Now, in for example MODULE1, I have a static reference called MyGreatXmlProtocol. The MyGreatXmlProtocol.dll then also exists in the directory appBinDir\Modules\Module1 and is loaded using the above code When code in the MODULE1 tries to use this MyGreatXmlProtocol, I get: Could not load file or assembly 'MyGreatXmlProtocol, Version=1.0.3797.26527, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. So, in a post (like this one) they say that To my understanding reflection will load the main assembly and then search the GAC for the referenced assemblies, if it cannot find it there, you can then incorparate an assemblyResolve event: First; is it really needed to use the AssemblyResolve-event to make this work? Shouldnt my different MODULEs themself load their DLLs, as they are statically referenced? Second; if AssemblyResolve is the way to go - how do I use it? • Comparing all properties of an object using expression trees

This works fine for most properties, like int an string, but fails for DateTime? (and presumably other nullable value types). So why can't I pass a DateTime? into that, as it's convertible to object? If I look at Nullable<T>, it indeed has an override of Equals(object o). PS: I realize that this isn't a proper generator yet as it can't deal with null values, but I'll get to that :)

  Hello, I have a index.php file that will include several external files: "content/templates/id1/template.php" "content/templates/id2/template.php" "content/templates/id3/template.php" etc. All these files are loaded dynamically into index.php (it reads all folders inside "templates" directory and then includes every "template.php" file). I want to make "template.php" to have the same code in all the "id1,id2,id3" folders, BUT to load values from index.php depending in which folder it stays.. How can I do that? Thank You!

  I'm trying to define a class (or set of classes which implement the same interface) that will behave as a loosely typed object (like JavaScript). They can hold any sort of data and operations on them depend on the underlying type. I have it working in three different ways but none seem ideal. These test versions only allow strings and integers and the only operation is add. Adding integers results in the sum of the integer values, adding strings concatenates the strings and adding an integer to a string converts the integer to a string and concatenates it with the string. The final version will have more types (Doubles, Arrays, JavaScript-like objects where new properties can be added dynamically) and more operations. • C++: Platform independent game lib?

  Hi, I want to write a serious 2D game, and it would be nice if I have a version for Linux and one for Windows (and eventually OSX). Java is fantastic because it is platform independent. But Java is too slow to write a serious game. So, I thought to write it in C++. But C++ isn't very cross-platform friendly. I can find game libraries for Windows and libraries for Linux, but I'm searching one that I can use for both, by recompiling the source on a Windows platform and on a Linux platform. Are there engines for this or is this idea irrelevant? Isn't it that easy (recompiling)? Any advice and information about C++ libraries would be very very very appreciated!

• Improve heavy work in a loop in multithreading

I've tried to improve by using Parallel.For() but it always stop at some point. public void ParseDetails() { Parallel.For(0, mListAppInfo.Count, i => ParseOneDetail(i)); } In method ParseOneDetail(int index), I set an output log for tracking the record id which is under processing. • Problems installing PIL after OSX 10.9

  I installed Mac OSX 10.9 the day it came out. Afterwards I decided I needed to install PIL. I'd installed it before, but it appeared the update had broken that. When I try to use pip to install PIL, it fails when building _imaging.   Hello I've been using "Zip Utils" from http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/7530/Zip-Utils-clean-elegant-simple-C-Win32 to zip files and folders. the easy thing is if the file name is known i just need to do something like this HZIP hz; DWORD writ; hz = CreateZip(_T("filename\\image1.zip"),0); The problem is I get errors when trying to zip files by incrementing file names within a loop int i= 0; for(i=0; i<record; i++) { ZipAdd(hz,_T("doc"+i+1+".kml"), _T("filename\\doc"+i+1+".kml")); }

  Is there built-in support in the TPL for batching operations? I was recently playing with a routine to carry out character replacement on a character array which required a lookup table i.e. transliteration: for (int i = 0; i < chars.Length; i++) { char replaceChar; if (lookup.TryGetValue(chars[i], out replaceChar)) { chars[i] = replaceChar; } } I could see that this could be trivially parallelized, so jumped in with a first stab which I knew would perform worse as the tasks were too fine-grained: Parallel.For(0, chars.Length, i => { char replaceChar; if (lookup.TryGetValue(chars[i], out replaceChar)) { chars[i] = replaceChar; } }); I then reworked the algorithm to use batching so that the work could be chunked onto different threads in less fine-grained batches. This made use of threads as expected and I got some near linear speed up. I'm sure that there must be built-in support for batching in the TPL.
