  • Usernames are evil. How can I make Restful Authentication only require an email address and password

    As the title says: how can I use the Restful Authentication Plugin with Ruby on Rails. When I want to create a new user, it requires me to set the (wrong-named, confusing field) login (= username), email address and password. However, I want, like Facebook does, to require the user to enter only an email address and password, not a username. People will also login with this email address. Can anyone help me?

  • Determining a transaction fee before an order is processed

    When users make credit card transactions on my web app, I'd like to include the transaction fee on the confirmation page before the user makes the order. The thing is, there are different transaction fees for different cards. Is there a way to determine a transaction fee from the card number? I'm using Rails and ActiveMerchant, but I figure this question was applicable to other languages as well.

  • An affordable way to use multiple Delayed::Job queues

    I have a Ruby on Rails app that needs process many background jobs simultaneously: anywhere from 5-6 at a time to up to 50-60 at a time depending on the time of day. Right now my app is running on Heroku, which charges $.05/hour per worker, regardless of how much CPU or memory the worker is using. This is costing me a boatload each month... up to $1200/mo. Are there any hosts that will allow me to do what I'm doing for significantly cheaper?

    I've been looking for a way to convert an mp3 to aac programmatically or via the command line with no luck. Ideally, I'd have a snippet of code that I could call from my rails app that converts an mp3 to an aac. I installed ffmpeg and libfaac and was able to create an aac file with the following command: ffmpeg -i test.mp3 -acodec libfaac -ab 163840 dest.aac When i change the output file's name to dest.m4a, it doesn't play in iTunes.     I'm using the Ruby GData Library to access Google Docs and I recently got the GData::Client::CaptchaError because I was re-logging in with every request. Reading this post, it recommends not logging in with every request, but caching the authentication token. How do I go about doing that correctly? Google says it expires every 24 hours, and it doesn't seem like I should store it in the session, so what should I do? I'm using Ruby on Rails with all this. Thanks so much

Weeks ago, Rspec used to migrate the database to the last version automatically when executing 'rake spec', but now it doesn't do it automatically, I have to implement everything for myself.     I want to build a social network, with some of the users being able to put up some stuff up for sale. So basically, a social network + multiple sellers e-commerce. What is the best technology solution for that? I was thinking of going Rails route, using CommunityEngine and ActiveMerchant. Another option is going PHP and using something like X-Cart, which already has multiple sellers interface. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I know I can run rake doc:app manually, but I really don't feel like adding a manual step to the check-in process, and since we're already using cruisecontrolrb to handle deployment and testing automation, it seems like there should be an easy way to regenerate these files on check-in.
