• How do you serve php files located outside of the apache folders

  I've just installed phpMyAdmin at /usr/share/phpMyAdmin on a CentOS 5 machine running webmin / virtualmin. I have also added an alias to the apache config, being the following line: Alias /phpMyAdmin /usr/share/phpMyAdmin So that when I visit www.foobar.com/phpMyAdmin it serves phpMyAdmin. The problem is that the php is not being parsed, and is instead being spat out with the html which greatly diminishes the usefullness of what I have done. How can I set up apache or php or whatever to parse phpMyAdmin correctly. When googling this I wasn't able to get an understandable answer, however the most common related question was whether I am running mod_php or as CGI. php is running via CGI Thanks

• What's the likely culprit in email delay?

  If anyone can shed light or point me to a tutorial, I'd appreciate it. We are a tiny company and have experienced occasional delays in receiving email sent between staff members. We are in separate cities but all in the same state; our webhost/email ISP is across the country from us. If it matters, we're on Macs and most of use Entourage. Our email configurations are POP server: companyname.com and SMTP: smtp.companyname.com (When we used our DSL providers for SMTP we had unreliable service) Our ISP says they're not seeing delays related to their equipment and the problem is elsewhere in the network. A co-worker believes that the delays are with the ISP. Is there a good way to figure this out?

• How to force Chrome to make bookmarks the priority for auto-complete in the address bar?

  As it is right now, if I start typing, for instance, "dictionary" into the address bar, Chrome immediately returns a list of bookmarks, history, and related sites. However, the first and highlighted option is to search Google for "dictionary". I want Chrome to immediately recognize that I have a bookmark specifically named "Dictionary" that links to the site www.dictionary.com. But, that's the second choice, not the first. So I have to type a few letters, get auto-complete to suggest some sites, then key down to my bookmark item before pressing Enter. How annoying. Any way to cut the middle man and make my bookmark the top result?

• CUPS basic auth error through web interface

  I'm trying to configure CUPS to allow remote administration through the web interface. There's enough documentation out there that I can figure out what to change in my cupsd.conf (changing Listen localhost:631 to Port 631, and adding Allow @LOCAL to the /, /admin and /admin/conf sections). I'm now at the point where I can see the CUPS interface from another machine on the same network. The trouble is, when I try to Add Printer, I'm asked for a username and password, but my response is rejected even when I know I've gotten it right (I assume it's asking for the username and password of someone in the lpadmin group on the server machine; I've sshed in with credentials its rejecting, and the user I'm using has been added to the lpadmin group). If I disable auth outright, by changing DefaultAuthType Basic to DefaultAuthType None, I get an "Unauthorized" error instead of a password request when I try to Add Printer. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way of letting users from the local network to administer the print server through the CUPS web interface? • Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. • trouble backing up large mysql database

  I have a wordpress MU database with something like 10,000+ tables for various user's blogs. I need to upgrade wordpress MU to newest version, but want to backup the DB before hand. PHPMyAdmin fails to even load the page when i click export. Ive tried going into the server (windows) and using dos command line: mysqldump -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD> BACKUP.sql but it hangs for a minute and gives me the error: error 23: out of resources when opinging file '.\USERNAME\wp_1037_links.MYD' (Errorcode: 24) when using LOCK Tables What am i doing wrong, or should i be doing? Is PHPMyAdmin right for something this size? Is there a better way of doing this than the two methods i tried? **Note that this is not my site, so any suggestions as to the setup of the DB ill have to run by the owner. Im just here for WP related crap, this is kind of out of scope for what i was brought on to do.

• IIS seems to send email twice

  Hi, we have a request page in our website that send email to confirm the request. It seem that whenever this page is accessed, some (not all of them) are sent more than once at different time, sometime hours apart. The code (which is an old ASP page) looks fine as it sends only once to the recipient. So I doubt it's a programming related problem. When looking at the Exchange server, the tech told me that he seems to be receiving the request twice at different time, so the problem comes from what's between the code and Exchange. My hypothesis is that IIS seem to 'remember' the page and rerun it for some reason. Any hint on where to start? We have IIS 6 (in french if it makes any difference) with Exchange 2007. IIS is running on a Windows Server 2003 machine (virtual machine I believe) in a DMZ. I don't know about Exchange. Thank you.

• Several "SideBySide" errors in the event viewer (Windows XP SP3)

  Hi all, For some reason, my netbook continuously comes up with SideBySide errors in the event viewer under Computer Management. Is there some way to get rid of these errors? My netbook occasionally BSODs and looking back into the event viewer after, at least 8 SideBySide errors were logged prior to BSOD. Please help! Thanks in advance. Netbook is a Samsung N120 with upgraded RAM to 2 GB. EDIT: So, SideBySide errors have been resolved and apparently the BSOD isn't related. But I remember specifically, that last time I had a BSOD, it was due to an "unknown hard error." What causes that?

• Machine freezes when configuring dual display on Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)

  Hi - I'm trying to configure dual displays on an Ubuntu 9.10 machine. When I connect the 2 screens (1 VGA input, the other DVI), I see them in a mirrored display. I opened up Display Settings and unchecked the 'mirror screens' box, and when I clicked apply, the machine froze and I had to force restart it. This happened repeatedly for about 6 times until I gave up. How do I set it up to boot up normally with dual display working? thanks. edit: I thought it might be related to the virtual screen size, so I tried to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add: SubSection "Display" Virtual 2560 1024 EndSubSection But that didn't do much. Each screen works fine on it's own, and together with mirrored display.

• How can I restrict a user's time spent on internet?

  I see related questions on how to restrict access to certain websites but that is not really what I want. Here's my situation: My baby sitter wants access to the internet but we we don't want her spending hours on the computer and neglecting our infant children. Thus, I want to be able to restrict her surfing to 30 minutes a session, with sessions being at least 3 hours apart. I do not care to restrict the content. Does anyone know what is the best way to implement this? Thanks.

• Problem with shared ssh keys

  Following the process I've used in other environments, I've tried setting-up shared keys between my Mac and my CentOS 4 webserver. I've seen the same problem with my older Ubuntu 7.10 workstation trying to connect via keys to the same webserver. I have tried both dsa and rsa keytypes (sshkeygen -t <type>). The sshd_config file on my webserver seems to be allowing key-based logins: RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys And my .ssh/authorized_keys has my dsa and rsa keys added. Where should I be looking for what to change next to make key-based logins "Just Work™"? Is it related to the line, #UseDNS yes and sshd is trying to do a reverse-lookup on my IP, but cannot because it's NAT'd?

• High CPU usage when running a CentOS guest in VirtualBox

  I am running CentOS 5.3 as a VirtualBox 3.0.0 guest running on Windows XP. The Windows host CPU usage is constantly at 50% although the CentOS guest is completely idle (i.e. 0.00 load average). I know this is a common problem related to the 1000Hz frequency that the CentOS kernel runs at, and previously a special kernel-vm packages were released to resolve the issue. However, these packages are out of date and the README says that they are not not necessary as of CentOS 5.3. I found out that there is supposedly a kernel parameter divider=10 that reduces the frequency to 100Hz with the standard kernel but it doesn't seem to have any effect when running inside VirtualBox. Is there any way to resolve the issue without resorting to a custom kernel?

My understanding is that 0x80070011 means Error_Not_Same_Device. I think this may be related to the fact that C:\Users is a junction point to D:\Users Do I have to move my users directory back? Is there a workaround?

• "Manual threading" in Thunderbird?

  I use Thunderbird's threaded view of email messages to group emails together which are related. However, sometimes people will reply to messages using some mail program which does not properly set the headers to tell it's a reply, or will even write a new mail instead of replying. In these cases I would like to manually assign or "dock" a mail to an existing thread. Is there some way / addon to do this in Thunderbird? I'm thinking along the lines of a context menu "attach mail to thread XXX". The mail would then become part of that thread (maybe with a special marker explaining that it was manually grouped).

• How to disable text overwrite mode in Netbeans (CentOS)?

  Everytime I type some text, it is overwriting what I have typed. I assume that the mode is set to overwriting, I want to insert the text not overwrite it, but I can't disable it because my insert key is mixed up with my delete key so everytime I enter insert to disable the overwrite mode, it just delete what I type. So how to disable this? I'm using centOS.. and it seems that my problem is only related to Netbeans because when I type here, it is set to insert mode.. but in Netbeans, it just overwrites the codes! help!

• samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and video encoding with mencoder

  Hi everyone, my background is totally not related to video stuff so pardon my newbie style. I own a samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and I'm trying to encode videos to be uploaded to Youtube and Vimeo. First problem: videos generated by the camera with no processing appear like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANbl_DTuzE when I play them with Totem(Linux) or VideoLan. Second problem: When I try to encode the videos produced by the camera using mencoder I get the video at the resolution I chose but those ugly lines and lagging are still present. Here's the command I use: mencoder $inputFile -aspect 16:9 -of lavf -lavfopts format=psp -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts aglobal=1:vglobal=1:coder=0:vcodec=libx264:acodec=libfaac:vbitrate=4500:abitrate=128 -vf scale=1280:720 -ofps 25000/1001 -o $outputFile Any ideas?   We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

I am anxious about: 1. is the server acting as open proxy? 2. why http 301 is returned? Thx.

• More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

• SSH via DHCP server

  I have a DHCP server setup and I can't seem to connect to anything through SSH. When I'm logged in to the server itself, I can SSH. But when I connect any machine to the DHCP server, that machine can SSH but every server I SSH to asks for a password when the normal behavior (when not connected to the DHCP server) does not. • How can I automate FTP downloads based on date without bi-directional syncing?

  I have a particular FTP-related situation that I'm having trouble finding a solution for. I need an FTP download/syncing application that can operate within the following parameters: It must run under Windows (installing Python to be able to run a script or some such thing is an acceptable solution). It must be able to ignore files before a certain date (I want to start downloading new files, not all the files that exist in this very large FTP directory). I don't want bi-directional syncing (e.g. I don't want changes I make to the local files and directory structure to change the remote FTP server, the FTP server needs to be left completely alone). Automating it in some fashion would be ideal. What would you guys suggest? The solutions I'm turning up are all missing the mark in some fashion (e.g. they have bi-directional syncing or they have no way of starting the syncing today instead of trying to pull down the entire directory).

• How can I stop sysprep from interacting with boot on windows 7

  I have recently had a laptop sent back to supplier for fixing a mainboard fault. I got it back today and every time it boots up I am faced with: "Setup is preparing windows for first time use" Then once it gets to the desktop I get the sysprep dialog come up asking if I want OOBC or Audit actions. I can close it, but it just keeps coming back, and I cannot find any startup or boot actions, even downloaded autoruns, and that cannot find anything to do with it. Ideally I do not want to format/fdisk as I have just spent hours installing everything on the laptop and I have my primary C:/ which has all windows and at worst case I can get rid of that, but I have a secondary partition D:/ which has alot of stuff I cant lose as its work related and important. Also to make matters more difficult I do not have a windows 7 disk, it was just pre-installed and they dont provide a disk. Any help would be great!

• What response should be made to a continued web-app crack attempt?

  I've issues with a continuous, concerted cracking attempt on a website (coded in php). The main problem is sql-injection attempts, running on a Debian server. A secondary effect of the problem is being spidered or repeatedly spammed with urls that, though a security hole has been closed, are still obviously related attempts to crack the site, and continue to add load to the site, and thus should be blocked. So what measures can I take to: A: Block known intruders/known attack machines (notably making themselves anonymous via botnet or relaying servers) to prevent their repeated, continuous, timed access from affecting the load of the site, and B: report & respond to the attack (I'm aware that the reporting to law enforcement is almost certainly futile, as may be reporting to the ip/machine where the attacks are originating, but other responses to take would be welcome).

• How to stabilize PCIe sound card in its card slot?

  I have a Soundblaster Recon 3d Fatal1ty sound card and randomly every once in a while my computer won't recognize it. I am almost 100% sure it is something to do with its PCIe slot. After I turn off the computer and just wiggle the card a bit, the computer recognizes the card once I restart. I can't really try it in the other PCIe slot because the video card gets in the way. It is a Biostar TA970XE motherboard. I don't know if it is something to do with the pins on the actual card or if it is something to do with the slot. I couldn't find any related issues about this card on Google. Is there anything I can do to help secure the card in its slot so that my computer will recognize it? Any help is appreciated.
