• How to open files in Java Swing without JFileChooser

  I'm using Java Swing (GUI) and I want to add a button to my project for opening files . I don't like the JFileChooser since it opens a small window for browsing through the files of the directories . Can I use something else , instead of the JFileChooser under Java Swing ? I've tried to use elements of SWT but it didn't work , meaning is the use of the button object and then use it inside the Jframe , but that failed , so I guess SWT and Swing don't mix together? Here is the example of Java Swing with JFileChooser and I'm looking for something like this to put in my JFrame.

• LINQ2SQL: how to merge two columns from the same table into a single list

  this is probably a simple question, but I'm only a beginner so... Suppose I have a table containing home-work locations (cities) certain people use. Something like: ID(int), namePerson(string), homeLocation(string), workLocation(string) where homeLocation and workLocation can both be null. Now I want all the different locations that are used merged into a single list. Something like: var homeLocation = from hm in Places where hm.Home != null select hm.Home; var workLocation = from wk in Places where wk.Work != null select wk.Work; List<string> locationList = new List<string>(); locationList = homeLocation.Distinct().ToList<string>(); locationList.AddRange(workLocation.Distinct().ToList<string>()); (which I guess would still allow duplicates if they have the same value in both columns, which I don't really want...) • How do I compile variadic templates conditionally?

  Is there a macro that tells me whether or not my compiler supports variadic templates? #ifdef VARIADIC_TEMPLATES_AVAILABLE template<typename... Args> void coolstuff(Args&&... args); #else ??? #endif If they are not supported, I guess I would simulate them with a bunch of overloads. Any better ideas? Maybe there are preprocessor libraries that can ease the job?

  Hi, I'm looking for a way to share some iPhone SDK source code I have with others. Goals: Share iPhone SDK source code, Objective C written in XCode. I have a good bit of source code I want to share. I'd like for it to be easy. I'd like for it to have syntax highlighting, by this I mean coloring and formatting Ideally it would allow me some room to make it "fit" into my site. I want it to look like basically another page on my site where the content is the code. It shouldn't be just a text file in other words. Here's an example where someone was able to do this for C#: http://www.opennetcf.com/library/sdf/ I guess what I want is the ability to create html documentation for all the classes, etc.

• Rsspnse.redirect will not redirect on Internet explorer

  Hi, I am using Response.Redirect("someurl",true); in the page_preInit event to redirect all the requests that come to a page. It works fine on Firexox, but if i access the page from internet explorer 7/8, it says page can not be found and will not redirect to new URL. Any idea why this happens?? Update: I tried giving a radom URL in the redirect such as google.com and it works fine. Actually the URL I am trying to redirect is not accessible on my machine, it is on another VPN. I guess IE will not change the URL on the addressbar if it can not access the URL. Firefox on the other hand changes the address on the address bar.

• Can I change class types in a setter with an object-oriented language?

  Hello, Here is the problem statement : Calling a setter on the object should result in the object to change to an object of a different class, which language can support this ? Ex. I have a class called "Man" (Parent Class), and two children namely "Toddler" and "Old Man", they are its children because they override a behaviour in Man called as walk.( i.e Toddler sometimes walks using both his hands and legs kneeled down and the Old man uses a stick to support himself). The Man class has a attribute called age, I have a setter on Man,say it is called setAge(int ageValue). I have 3 objects, 2 toddlers, 1 old-Man. (The system is up and running,i guess when we say objects it is obvious) .I will make this call, toddler.setAge(80), I expect the toddler to change to an object of type Old Man. • getResourceAsStream returns HttpInputStream not of the entire file

  Hi, I am having a web application with an applet which will copy a file packed witht the applet to the client machine. When I deploy it to webserver and use: InputStream in = getClass().getResourceAsStream("filename") ; The in.available() always return a size of 8192 bytes for every file I tried, which means the file is corrupted when it is copied to the client computer. The InputStream is of type HttpInputStream (sun.net.protocol.http.HttpUrlConnection$httpInputStream). But while I test applet in applet viewer, the files are copied fine, with the InputStream returned is of type BufferedInputStream, which has the file's byte sizes. I guess that when getResourceStream in file system the BufferedInputStream will be used and when at http protocol, HttpInputStream will be used. How will I copy the file completely, is there a size limited for HttpInputStream? Thanks a lot.

  I know that I can dynamically add an instance method to an object by doing something like: import types def my_method(self): # logic of method # ... # instance is some instance of some class instance.my_method = types.MethodType(my_method, instance) Later on I can call instance.my_method() and self will be bound correctly and everything works. Now, my question: how to do the exact same thing to obtain the behavior that decorating the new method with @property would give? I would guess something like: instance.my_method = types.MethodType(my_method, instance) instance.my_method = property(instance.my_method) But, doing that instance.my_method returns a property object.

• Website with Microsites & Blog - recommendations

  Hi guys, I'm in the process of scoping a solution for an events organisation. Their main website features information about them and blog entries etc, but they hold major events which require microsites (domain.com/event). The microsites all have a different look-and-feel, different nav structure, and custom content-managed components. The one thing that's common across everything is the blog - it will have a category for each event under which users can post. The main site will display all blog posts, but the microsites will only display posts for their category. How would you guys implement this? The solution needs to be PHP, and my initial thought was CodeIgniter but if possible I'd like to avoid building the blog functionality - so I guess I could integrate it with EE or Wordpress. If anyone has any other suggestions they would be most appreciated.

• Deploying a .Net App Source Control (SVN) over 32-bit AND 64-bit dev stations

  Here is the situation : Our Dev Team has heterogeneous OS systems, scattered between 32-bit and 64-bit. This is not ideal, we are actually planning to homogenize our infrastructure, but in the meantime we have to deal with it. The issue is that when a 32-bit developer checks out a 64-bit solution on SVN, he has to manually change the target platforms all over again to get it compiled (not to mention other side problems) My question is : What clean (though temporary) solution could be addressed in such situation, permitting each developer to keep his default project/platform settings while checking out and in from SVN. I guess that -at least for the first time a project/solution is checked out, a dev still has to tweak the setting manually to compile it properly. After that, according to relevant SVN filters, it is possible to ignore some settings files (which ones, by the way?) I am open to all clever and detailed suggestions. Thanks.

  Hi! I need to calculate an end date based on todays date and a number of months. For example, todays date 04/01/2010 and the number of months is 6. Are there any functions I can use to do some math that would return "10/01/2010"? Also, I think it's important to note that I am storing the result in MySQL as a "DATETIME" so I guess I would have to do something with the time as well... ??? Thanks!

• What do you tell people your profession is? [closed]

  My technical title is Member of the Technical Staff, and like you most of you, I design/write code for a living. I can never decide what to answer when someone asks what I do for a living? Software Developer? Software Engineer? [Kernel] Programmer? Computer Scientist? These all seem to have various bad connotations. I guess I like Software Engineer the best, but unfortunately this term has been coopted by people who don't actually code. I made the mistake of taking a 'Software Engineering' class, and realized that I definitely don't want to be associated with people who major in this. Probably this is too subjective, so feel free to community wiki it or whatever, but I think it is a valid question and I would like to hear what others have decided on and their reasoning.

  Anyone know of a project(s) that seek to abstract form definitions on level higher than WPF, Silverlight, Winforms, WebForms, etc... I'm working on a project where we are fixing up 16 somewhat simple WebForms. But we may convert (and probably will convert to WPF or Silverlight 3 to 4 months from now. I'd rather define these forms once and be done with it. I'm willing to write a small DSL to help define forms, subforms, validation, links, and popups. I'm only looking to solve this for 80% or 90% of the forms. Four are very complicated and I'm willing to hand code these. I guess I'm looking for something like what XUL had hoped to be.

  Hey there, i bumped the other day into a little problem regarding C#'s properties. Let's say i do have this setup: public class Point { public float X; public float Y; } public class Control { protected Point m_Position = new Point(); public Position { get { return m_Position; } set { m_Position = value; } // reorganize internal structure.. reorganize(); } protected reorganize() { // do some stuff } } This is all fine, but when it comes to usage, i could write something like: Control myControl = new Control(); myControl.Position.X = 1.0f; The thing is, my Control class wont recognize that the Position has been changed because set hasn't been called. • Getting the errors for code in unopened .aspx pages

  Is there a way to check for errors in unopened *.ASPX pages. For example, if you change the name of a function Visual Studio will catch the error on the page and list it in the "Error List" only if the page is opened and being validated? I guess the question could be is there a validation option opposed to the compile option to check for errors? (Yes, i know code should go into the pre-compiled code-behind pages.) • Working with QWords

  I'm learning and in the course of that working on an assembler conversion which uses QWORDs a lot (x86-32bit). Now my reference material doesn't have anything on working with such values beyond the obvious of splitting them up into the 32-bit registers. I guess they're on the old side. The newer processors have mmx and sse instructions and the like. Would I be served well to look into those instructions for solving this? What is the best way to handle doing work on QWORD values?

  Weird question I guess.. But I am not very math wiz - soo here goes.. I am trying to create a patterne (or variable patterns based on selection) based on x and y numbers (2 rows and 4 columns) and the direction of the counting of x numbers like: 1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 That one is easy, when number of x-columns is reached, next line and continue x count. But with eg. this one (still 2 rows and 4 columns): 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 upsie.. what if it is eg. 3++ rows and still 4 columns? 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 9-10-11-12 what would be the formula for this - or other possible variations (teaser for variations): 9-10-11-12 8-7-6-5 1-2-3-4 or reversed

• Integrate ClickOnce update in a setup

  As recent decision in my team we decided to deploy a software we develop for some time now in ClickOnce. Previously it was deployed with a merge module in a setup project. We had in mind to actually deploy the ClickOnce setup/updater in the web server setup. The problem here would not exactly to integrate it but to make sure to limit the human work to integrate it. Normally I guess it would be necessary to "add - file" and select the folder containing the setup.exe + publish.htm + application files + .application, but I fear that for each time we publish a new version to the hard drive we have to update the setup project as well. Would someone have some insight to help that ? (especially to not have to add the program_[version] folder inside application files that is created each time a new publish is done).

So that when I'm logged in, I can see everything. But when an anonymous user visit the site, he will only see the public stuff. It's way to manage a kind of front window/back-store architecture. I can use the same Drupal installation to all my needs and choose to filter the stuff I may want to make publicly available. * Important : 1) Private items must not be accessible even if anonymous users guess its URL; 2) Private item must not show up if anonymous user perform a search; 3) Private content must not be indexed by search engines; 4) Private items should show up if I perform a search while being logged in. • How Flask loads blueprint internaly?

  I'm just interested how Flask's blueprints gets imported. It still imports the python module at the end of all the stuff done by Flask and if I'm right python does two things when importing: registers the module name in the namespace and then initialize it if needed. So if Flask blueprint is initialized when it gets registered, so all the module then is in memory and if there are lots of blueprints to register, the memory just gets wasted, because in one request basically you use one blueprint. Not a big loss but still... But if it is only registered in the namespace and initialized only when needed (when the real request reaches it), then it make sense to register them all at once (as is the recommended way I understood). This is I guess the case here :) But just wanted to ask and understand a bit deeper.

• Visual Studio 2008\Backup Files folder created when every new VS instance is opened.

  Hi, I think I have something broken with the path that VS 2008 saves the backup files. Since few days, it creates a new "Visual Studio 2008" directory in the same folder that my .sln file exists. Then, after the time of the first auto-save expires, the backup files are being saved to this folder. I browsed the tools-options dialog but I haven't found a way to set the directory to by static: C:\documents and setings\\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Backup Files. Can anybody point me with the right solution to this problem (probably the correct registry entry - I guess) ? thanks

• Hibernate: getting a record but it's being updated in the database?

  For some reason Hibernate seems to be keeping my session open and updating the object without me explicitely invoking a save/update/saveorupdate. I guess the session is staying open and it's beeing marked as dirty. However this is not the desired behaviour, so what's the cleanest way to fix this? The issue seems to occur because I store a phone number without formatting in the database but the getter of the object returns a formatted telephone number. My flow: go to a jsp = controller = service = dao DAO getter function if(userId != 0) { return (User)dbFactory.get(User.class, userId); } return null; The service just passes it to the controller and the controller puts te User object in the request scope. I display it on my JSP page using EL.

• SQLite subquery syntax/error/difference from MySQL

  I was under the impression this is valid SQLite syntax: SELECT *, (SELECT amount AS target FROM target_money WHERE start_year <= p.bill_year AND start_month <= p.bill_month ORDER BY start_year ASC, start_month ASC LIMIT 1) AS target FROM payments AS p; But I guess it's not, because SQLite returns this error: no such column: p.bill_year What's wrong with how I refer to p.bill_year? Yes, I am positive table payments hosts a column bill_year. Am I crazy or is this just valid SQL syntax? It would work in MySQL wouldn't it?? I don't have any other SQL present so I can't test others, but I thought SQLite was quite standardlike.
