• [JavaScript] Loading Google Maps API after the page is displayed

  Hello, My landing page contains a big google maps portion, which slows down the loading time. I am trying to do the following: Load the static elements first so the page loads fast initially. Display a loading notification in the map placeholder so that the user knows that the map is coming up Load and display the map I have done this: $(document).ready(function() { map_initialize(); } map_initialize() being the function which loads the map into its container div. However, this still will not display the static elements fist. The page will wait until the map_initialize() is finished, then load the static elements at the same time as the map. Thanks,

  HI I am writing a part of a server which should dispatch some other child processes. Because I want to wait on some of the processes, and dispatch others without waiting for completion, I use double fork for the second kind of processes (thus avoiding the zombie processes). Problem is, my server holds a lot of memory, so forking takes a long time (even the copy-on-write fork used in Linux which copies only the paging tables) I want to replace the fork() with vfork(), and it's easy for the second fork (as it only calls execve() in the child), but I couldn't find any way I can replace the first one. Does anyone know how I can do that? Thanks! The server is a linux (RH5U4), written in C++.

  Each time I compile my Qt project after modifying my qss stylesheet file, the modifications aren't taken into account, unless I rebuild everything. Any idea on a workaround for this, so that I don't have to wait 5 minutes each time I change my qss ? Notes: I use Qt 4.8, and my stylsheet is declared in a resource file (qrc). EDIT: As suggested by Luca Carlon, when a qss is reference in the project through a .qrc file, the changes in the qss don't affect the qrc, and the compiler ignores it. To avoid that, I added a Custom Build Step to my project: before the qmake step! calls a .bat file without any argument the .bat contains the real command copy /b files.qrc +,,

  I have the following SP: CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_LockReader] AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; begin try set transaction isolation level serializable begin tran select * from teste commit tran end try begin catch rollback tran set transaction isolation level READ COMMITTED end catch set transaction isolation level READ COMMITTED END The table "test" has many values, so "select * from teste" takes several seconds. I run the sp_LockReader at same time in two diferent query windows and the second one starts showing test table contents without the first one terminates. Shouldn't serializeble level forces the second query to wait? How do i get the described behaviour? Thanks

• JAVA: 500 Worker Threads, what kind of thread pool?

  I am wondering if this is the best way to do this. I have about 500 threads that run indefinitely, but Thread.sleep for a minute when done one cycle of processing. ExecutorService es = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(list.size()+1); for (int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++) { es.execute(coreAppVector.elementAt(i)); //coreAppVector is a vector of extends thread objects } I do need a separate threads for each running task, so changing the architecture isn't an option. I tried making my threadPool size equal to Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors() which attempted to run all 500 threads, but only let 8 (4xhyperthreading) of them execute. The other threads wouldn't surrender and let other threads have their turn. I tried putting in a wait() and notify(), but still no luck. If anyone has a simple example or some tips, I would be grateful!

  Hi, I am building a web app in Silverlight which allows users to view and edit a database. In order to prevent multiple users from editing the same data, I was thinking of implementing a lock and key mechanism, so that other users are made to wait when one particular user is editing the data. Is there any way in which we can have variable(flag specifying if a user is editing data) in the server which can be shared across multiple clients? Is there a better way to manage this type of conurrent data access issues?

  I have two threads in python (2.7). I start them at the beginning of my program. While they execute, my program reaches the end and exits, killing both of my threads before waiting for resolution. • How can I access the value of a checkbox without a postback?

  I have a radgrid controlling access to an application for users. There are two columns, a 'name' column and a checkbox 'access' column representing their current access permission. the checkboxes are populated from a database. I would like the to change the checkboxes to grant or deny access to the users I specify. Since there are alot of users I would like to make multiple changes and use a submit button to write the changes to the database. I do not want to postback with each checkbox change and wait for the page to "blink". My problem is that with the checkbox postback disabled, when I click submit, the value of the checkboxes are not registering the changes I make. I need a way to access the current client-side state of the checkbox or some workaround to accomplish this. Thanks in advance!

• Can I prevent iPhone from using 3G under any circumstances?

  I'm writing a travel guide related app that will download large databases (60meg) potentially overseas, with the reachability code I can tell when a host is reachable via wifi or 3g BUT I'm worried that if for some reason the wifi connection breaks for a minute or so as some DSL connections are likely to do on occasion the iphone will switch transparently to 3G and without realising I could be racking up someones phone bill with overseas data charges! So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience, in the event of such break in wifi connectivity (wifi still works but it's connection to the net is down) would the reachability code report ReachableViaWWAN? So I could wait till my download code returns, check how the host is currently reachable and if it's via 3g I could abort? Is it possible to select what type of connection I can use aka 3g or wifi exclusively?

• Best way to identify and dispose locked thread in java.

  I have to call a function 3rd party module on a new thread. From what I've seen, the call either completes quickly if everything went well or it just hangs for ever locking up the thread. What's a good way to start the thread and make the call and wait for a few secs and if the thread is still alive, then assuming it's locked up, kill (or stop or abandon) the thread without using any deprecated methods. I have something like this for now, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it and I want to avoid calling Thread.stop() as it's deprecated.   I have a .wav file that I'd like to use across my game, currently I am loading the sound in onCreate() of each activity in the game. soundCount = soundpool.load(this,R.raw.count, 1); The sound will be played once the activity starts. soundpool.play(soundCount, 0.9f, 0.9f, 1, -1, 1f); Problem is at times I will hit the error "sample x not ready". Is it possible to load the .wav file once upon starting the game and keep it in memory and use it later across the game? Or is it possible to wait for 1-2 seconds for the sound to load finish?

• How to ensure I can replace files in a directory?

  I want to completely replace one directory on the file system with another directory in a temp directory. The tricky part is that the files in the folder to be replaced could be being used at any time, causing the replace operation to fail. I need to somehow wait on an exclusive lock on the directory so that I can delete all of its contents without failing, so I can then move the other directory in to replace it. To make matters potentially more difficult, the process that is likely to be using the files is my own (via a Lucene.net library and out of my hands). So it can't be a process-level lock it has to be an object-level lock. Any thoughts on how I might do this? Or should I just keep re-attempting until it succeeds? I guess that's always an option.

But functions have their own workspace and can not access variables in the global workspace.   (WPF) We have been asked to build a little window that pops up when the app is busy (instead of or in addition to a wait cursor). We put a textblock in the window, and a ProgressBar with IsIndeterminate = true. We call show on the little window, and then start up our long-running process, calling Close on the little window when we are through. However, during the long-running process, the ProgressBar does not show any activity, and the little window shows (Not Responding) in its title. Is this even possible? A better idea?

• Better Alternative to Telerik Draggable Panel ?

  When putting a video in a Telerik Draggable Panel, when dragging the panel, on Firefox the video restart all over again because DOM is reconstructed. They don't seem to have an answer to this. Also we can't seem to be able to control the z-index as it doesn't take into account: when moving the panel over other telerik controls, the video slips under. So any other draggable panel that wouldn't have these annoyances ? Telerik doesn't seem to give any answer so we're afraid we're stuck and we cannot afford to wait longer. Currently think about using Yahoo UI.

  Hi! all, I am writing an application which is a kinda video streamer.The client is receiving a video stream using udp socket.Now as I am receiving the stream I want to play it simultaneous.It is different from playing local video file lying in your hard disk in which case it can be as simple as running the file using system("vlc filename").But here many issues are involved like there can be delay in receiving and player will have to wait for the incoming data.I have come to know about using vlc to run a video stream.Can you please elaborate the step for playing the stream using vlc.I am implementing my application in c++. • Problem with "write" function in linux

  I am trying to write 2 server/client programs under Linux, in which they communicate through named pipes. The problem is that sometimes when I try to write from the server into a pipe that doesn't exist anymore (the client has stopped), I get a "Resource temporarily unavailable" error and the server stops completely. I understand that this is caused by using a O_NONBLOCK parameter when opening the fifo chanel, indicating the point where the program would usually wait until it could write again in the file, but is there a way to stop this behavior, and not halt the entire program if a problem occurs (shouldn't the write command return -1 ad the program continue normally)? And another strange thing is that this error only occurs when running the programs outside the ide (eclipse). If I run both programs inside eclipse, on error the write function just returns -1 and the programs continues normally.
