• Best Practice - Validating Input In Simple GUI Application?

  I'm writing a GUI app with wxwidgets in C++ for one of my programming classes. We have to validate input and throw custom exceptions if it doesn't meet certain conditions. My question is, what is best practice when it comes to this? Should I write a seperate function that checks for errors, and have my event handler's call that function? Or should I do my error-checking in my event handlers? Or does it really matter? Thanks!

• Best way to implement keywords for image upload gallery

  I'm starting to spec out an image gallery type system similar to Facebook's. Members of the site will be able to create image galleries and upload images for others to view. Images will have keywords the the uploader can specify. Here's the question, what's the best way to model this? With image and keyword tables linked vi a HABTM relation? Or a single image table with the keywords saved as comma delimited values in a text field in the image record? Then search them using a LIKE or FULL TEXT index function? I want to be able to pull up all images containing a given keyword as well as generate a keyword cloud. I'm leaning toward the HABTM setup but I wanted to see what everyone else though. Thanks!!

• Whats the best way to stop this app crash when buttons rapidly pressed iphone obj-c

  Hi, I'm not entirely sure why this crash is happening and I'd like to get advice on the best way to deal with it. My app has 3 buttons. Each button requests a different XML file from a server which is used to populate a table view. If I rapidly press the buttons in sequence , button 1 button 2 button3 button 1 button 2 button3 button 1 button 2 button3 the application quits. What could be causing this. Would id be in the NSURLRequest side of things or the table view population side? How would you suggest I stop this behaviour? I was going to just set a boolean "isRequesting" to true when a button is pressed and set it to false when the table view is finished populating. If any button is pressed while isRequesting is True they do nothing. Does that sound wise or is there a better way? Thanks, dub

  I'm working on a pretty complex DSL that I want to compile down into a few high level languages. The whole process has been a learning experience. The compiler is written in java. I was wondering if anyone knew a best practice for the design of the code generator portion. I currently have everything parsed into an abstract syntax tree.   I'm trying to determine the best way to implement a 404 page in a standard ASP.NET web application. I currently catch 404 errors in the Application_Error event in the Global.asax file and redirect to a friendly 404.aspx page. The problem is that the request sees a 302 redirect followed by a 404 page missing. Is there a way to bypass the redirect and respond with an immediate 404 containing the friendly error message? Does a web crawler such as Googlebot care if the request for a non existing page returns a 302 followed by a 404?

  Looking for advice on the best technique for saving complex Python data structures across program sessions. Here's a list of techniques I've come up with so far: pickle/cpickle json jsonpickle xml database (like SQLite) Pickle is the easiest and fastest technique, but my understanding is that there is no guarantee that pickle output will work across various versions of Python 2.x/3.x or across 32 and 64 bit implementations of Python. Json only works for simple data structures. Jsonpickle seems to correct this AND seems to be written to work across different versions of Python. Serializing to XML or to a database is possible, but represents extra effort since we would have to do the serialization ourselves manually. Thank you, Malcolm

  Hello everyone, what are the best practices parsing XML from an HTTP resource in Android? I've been using HttpURLConnection to retrieve an InputStream, wrapping it with a BufferedInputStream, and then using SAX to parse the buffered stream. For the most part it works, though I do receive error reports of SocketTimeoutException: The operation timed out or general parsing error. I believe it's due to the InputStream. Would using HttpClient instead of HttpURLConnection help? If yes, why? Should the stream be output to a file, having the file parsed instead of the stream? Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  Hi all, I'm looking to implement a preview functionality in my posts scaffold. All I need to do is allow a user to enter information in the new view (/posts/new) and then replace the submit button with a preview button. Once the preview button is clicked, the user is routed to the preview page (probably /posts/new/preview). If the user wants to make a change they would click 'go back' or if they are happy with the post they can then submit the post. • OpenCMS - Best approach for showing rotating references

  Hi, I would like to add on the right column of my site a rotating references section. Each reference would have some text + name of person + company name. It does not need to be structured (open text is also ok). I would then want opencms to rotate between 20 difference references each time a page is displayed. I can keep a session scope counter holding which reference we last showed. I need a way to manage the references (users not programmers) over time. In terms of data security would it be a good idea to replicate the user database across all web applications? Note: All web applications provide an API which users can use to embed widgets into their own websites. These widgets work through a token auth mechanism which will again need to authenticate against my user database.

We consist in a group of 4 developers and a manager (that knows something about programming and distributed systems). Each one, having own opinion on service design. I've used response.redirect("Thankyou.aspx") a lot in the past I've also used something like this for hiding form controls and outputting a message: outResult.Attributes.Remove("style") outResult.Attributes.Add("style", "display:block;") outEntry.Attributes.Remove("style") outEntry.Attributes.Add("style", "display:none;") For the above you have to consider post backs that may occur if the user click refresh though. I am heavily biased in favor of free packages but others may have a different emphasis.

  I'm designing a service for sending out emails for our eCommerce site (order confirmations, alerts etc...) The plan is to have a "SendEmail" method, that generates a chunk of XML representing the email to be sent, and sticks it on an Amazon SQS queue. My web app(s) and other applications will use this to "send" emails. I then require a way of checking the queue, and physically sending out the email messages. (I know how I'm going to be dispatching emails) I'm curious as to what the best way to "poll" the queue would be? Should I create a windows service, and use something like Quartz.net to schedule it to check the queue every x number of minutes for example? Is there a better way of doing this?

  I want to write a macro program that takes in data from a text file and then arranges it in a specific manner in an excel file. I don't know which language has the best features for dealing with Excel. I prefer java, and I see someone made an api called JExcelApi, but I'm not sure about it's capabilities. I would like to be able to generate a graph automatically in excel based on the data in a certain column. Is this possible in any language? I would guess that Microsoft's VB or C# would have an advanced feature such as this, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

  Hello all. I am building an application for Android (1.5) that, after quering a webservice, shows to the user a big amount of data that should be displayed in a "grid" or "table" style. I must show a result of about 7 columns and 50 rows (for example a customer list with names, adresses, telephone number, sales amount last year and so). Obviously, the 7 columns will not fix in the screen and I would like the user would be able to scroll up/down and LEFT/RIGHT (important because of the number of columns) to explore the grid results. cell selection level is NOT necessary, as much I would need row selection level. What is the best approach to get this interface element? Listview / GridView / TableLayout? Thanks

That module also shares the same general layout as the other modules.   I have an Android Service that does some background processing on an image using a separate Thread. If an error occurs in this Service or even worse in the thread, what is the best practice to inform the launching Activity of the problem and allow the application to recover to a stable state (i.e. the state it was in before launching the service). From within the Service I could post a Toast or a Notification, but that doesn't help me. I would like to inform the user about the problem but at the same time recover the application to a stable state.

I wanna use SVN as the version control but Im not sure what the best way to set it up is. Do i make the actual html directory on the server be the repo so that when I check things in it goes live?
