• SVN Symfony Best Practice

  So I am starting a Symfony project that I will be developing on my local machine and pushing changes everyday to the live server. I wanna use SVN as the version control but Im not sure what the best way to set it up is. Do i make the actual html directory on the server be the repo so that when I check things in it goes live? Do I make it a separate directory and move things over by hand? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

• Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

  For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?

  I have a situation where our developers extended a Third party database (MS SQL) by adding tables, views, stored procedures, and functions. Recently when the vender issued updates to the database they dropped all of our custom objects. The question now is what are some best practices that will allow us to extend the third party database but keep our objects safe from future updates? My first thought is to create a separate database but then I’m stuck with fully qualifying all the references back to the original database which may cause issues promoting database changes from test to production.

• Best way to do partial update content on ASP.NET

  Initially i was planning to use master page for every page in my application. At the end, i found out every times the page is changed, it reload full page even it have the same master page. I have confused the frameset with the master page. Then, i have 2 ideas in my minds to achieve it by not using master page. Using iframe and set the attribute to runat server, so that i can change the page in my codebehind.(I preferred to control the page flow in server side) Make every single child page to user control. Then dynamically load it to the panel in codebehind. Please give me some advise which method is the best in ASP.NET with AJAX enabled, or other ways that is better. Thanks.

  What is the 'best' way to handle the html markup for partial views? (which are also refreshed using AJAX) The biggest issue I run into is where to place the 'container' div... Consider having a masterpage and a partial view. (class="" could be interchanged with id="" depending if the partial is guaranteed to be unique, however this isn't really important to the issue i think) Masterpage: <div id="place1" class="placeholder"> <!-- render partial --> </div> Partial: <div id="partial1" class="partial"> <!-- content --> </div> I feel that something isn't being done right. However I cannot remove the div in the masterpage, because I need that to 'encapsulate' the response from AJAX partial updates.   I need a way to collapse duplicate (defined in terms of a string field with an id) results in solr. I know that such a feature is comming in the next version (1.5), but I can't wait for that. What would be the best way to remove duplicates using the current stable version 1.4? Given that finding duplicates in my case is really easy (comparison of a string field), should it be a Filter, should I overwrite the existing SearchComponent or write a new Component, or use some external libraries like carrot2? I'm using the static methods to load data from an xml file via a XmlResourceParser. To create a XmlResourceParser requires a call on the Application Context. So my question is, what is the best way to get a reference to the Application Context into the static methods? Have each Activity get it and pass it in? Store it somehow in a global variable?

  We have several applications that are installed in several departments that interact with database via Intranet. Users tend to use weak passwords or store login/password written on a shits of paper where everybody can see them. I'm worried about login/password leakage & want to minimize consequences. Minimizing database-server attack surface by hiding database-server from Intranet access would be a great idea also. I'm thinking about intermediary data access service method-based security. It seems more flexible than table-based or connection-based database-server one. This approach also allows to hide database-server from public Intranet. • Best practice for partial updates in a RESTful service

  I am writing a RESTful service for a customer management system and I am trying to find the best practice for updating records partially. For example, I want the caller to be able to read the full record with a GET request. But for updating it only certain operations on the record are allowed, like change the status from ENABLED to DISABLED. (I have more complex scenarios than this) I don't want the caller to submit the entire record with just the updated field for security reasons (it also feels like overkill). Is there a recommended way of constructing the URIs? Do I use GET, POST, PUT or is there no agreed way of doing these kind of things? I have a controller named "Account" (singular), which should handle various settings for the currently logged in user. class AccountController < ApplicationController def index end def settings end def email_settings end end How would I set-up the routes for this in a proper manner? At the moment I have: match 'account(/:action)', :to => 'account', :as => 'account' This however does not automagically produce methods like account_settings_path but only account_path Is there any better practice of doing this? Remember the Account controller doesn't represent a controller for an ActiveModel. If this is in fact the best practice, how would I generate links in my views for the actions? url_to :controller => :account, :action => :email_settings ? Thanks!

  I have a gps device that records data e.g. datetime, latitude, longitude I have an sdk that reads the data from the device. The way the data is read: A command packet (basically a combination of int values in a struct) is sent to the device. The device responds with the data in fixed size chunks e.g. 64bytes Depending on the command issued I will get back differect data structs e.g. sending command 1 to the device returns a struct like struct x { id int, name char[20] } command 2 returns a collection of the following structs (basically it boils down to an array of the structs - y[12]) struct y { date datetime, lat decimal, lon decimal } I would then want to convert the struct to a class and save the data to a database.   Is there a resource for finding the "best" jquery plugins, or at least just the most used ones? For example, I wanted to find a menu jquery plugin but when I goto the jquery website there are so many to look through and I don't see a way to see how popular each one is. For ruby there's the http://ruby-toolbox.com/ which lists many plugins, how popular they are, info about them, etc. Is there something similar or at least some way to filter through all the jquery plugins? EDIT 1: To shed some more light on this - the "most popular" link on the jquery page is useless. I can't find a way to search through it but even worse, the ratings don't seem to mean much. Ex - the first item, in other words the most popular plugin in that list has 5 stars and TWO votes. Doesn't seem like a very reliable resource to me.

  I've read all the answers on stackoverflow for similar questions but no one really laid down an explanation: why is zend/symfony/kohana/cakePHP the best for jQuery? what is the difference? I'm writing a snazzy ultra-cool web 2.0 app with google maps and facebook connect integration plus a bunch of other APIs. Almost everything will be AJAX vis JSON. For me PHP is a burden, an unnecessary evil. I need database control, almost always via JSON. I need user authentication. This is all. Nothing fancy. And I need it to scale.   Basically what I have is web services returning data in xml format. Once I do a call to a webservice to retrive data from web service function (GetUserList) i want to take that data and then dymaically display (no postback) the resulting information. I know several ways of doing this: webservice sends data back to javascript, javascript then parses, replaces strings or text inside a div or child, or take the information retrieved and then put it into html table format through javascript.   Hi Quite frequently I have to explain things to Project Managers who sometimes want to know a little bit more about something, and sometimes I try and come up with some analogy that best explains it. Now, I can't really kick this off with a good analagy because mine usually suck, but I would be interested in yours, or some you've heard that have been used to simplify explanations. One analogy that does come up often is when explaining Interfaces (i.e. .Net) to which I usually explain in terms of a vehicle has a driver interface, and all vehicles must implement that interface so that anyone who can drive a vehicle will be able to utilise it.
