• Is there stl and utf8 friendly C++ Wrapper for ICU, or other powerful unicode library

  Hello, I need a good Unicode library for C++. I need Transformations in Unicode sensitive way. For example sort all strings in case insensitive way and get their first characters for index. Convert to upper and to lower various Unicode strings. Split text in reasonable position -- words that would work for Chinese and Japanese as well. Formatting numbers, dates in locale sensitive way (should be thread safe). Transparent support of utf8 (primary internal representation). As far as I know the best library is ICU. However, I can't find normal developer friendly API documentation with examples. Also as far as I see, it is not too friendly with modern C++ design, work with STL and so on. • How to make mysql accept connections externally

  I have a VPS and I want to make mysql DB accept connection externally (from my PC for instance). I have Debian Linux installed on the server. I checked some tutorials online and they said to comment out: bind-address = 127.0.0.1 But this didn't seem to help! is there anything specific for VPSs? or Am I missing something else? The command that runs mysql is: /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3306 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

• Why Does This Maintainability Index Increase?

  I would be appreciative if someone could explain to me the difference between the following two pieces of code in terms of Visual Studio's Code Metrics rules. Why does the Maintainability Index increase slightly if I don't encapsulate everything within using ( )? While I could boost the score up to 76 with return Convert.ToBase64String(sha1.ComputeHash(Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText))), I shouldn't. I would clearly be just playing with numbers and it isn't truly any more readable or maintainable at that point. I am curious though as to what the logic might be behind the increase in this case. It's obviously not line-count.

• Custom control in DataViewGrid

  I'm trying to embed a custom control in a Datagridview. I've looked at the Calendar (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7tas5c80.aspx) example but i just cant get it working for a custom control. I need the control to show for each object in the grid. Not just when the user edits the content. I need to do this so that i can bind my dataviewgrid to a datasource and have it create the required forms in the grid for each my object list. So that the user can do inline editing in the grid without having to double click the row and have a new dialog pop up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• C++ Returning Multiple Items

  I am designing a class in C++ that extracts URLs from an HTML page. I am using Boost's Regex library to do the heavy lifting for me. I started designing a class and realized that I didn't want to tie down how the URLs are stored. One option would be to accept a std::vector<Url> by reference and just call push_back on it. I'd like to avoid forcing consumers of my class to use std::vector. So, I created a member template that took a destination iterator. It looks like this: template <typename TForwardIterator, typename TOutputIterator> TOutputIterator UrlExtractor::get_urls( TForwardIterator begin, TForwardIterator end, TOutputIterator dest); I feel like I am overcomplicating things. I like to write fairly generic code in C++, and I struggle to lock down my interfaces. But then I get into these predicaments where I am trying to templatize everything. At this point, someone reading the code doesn't realize that TForwardIterator is iterating over a std::string. In my particular situation, I am wondering if being this generic is a good thing. At what point do you start making code more explicit? Is there a standard approach to getting values out of a function generically?

So far, I've done something similar to this: TemplateField foo = new TemplateField(); foo.ItemTemplate = new bar(); this.GridView1.Columns.Add(foo); where bar is like this: public class bar : ITemplate { public bar() { } public void InstantiateIn(Control container) { DropDownList ddl = new DropDownList(); container.Controls.Add(ddl); } } (the actual dropdownlist is populated) But ITemplate doesn't contain any kind of data binding properties to implement, and the TemplateField class doesn't seem to have any either... What do I do?

  I'm seeing some different behavior between g++ and msvc around value initializing non-copyable objects. Consider a class that is non-copyable: class noncopyable_base { public: noncopyable_base() {} private: noncopyable_base(const noncopyable_base &); noncopyable_base &operator=(const noncopyable_base &); }; class noncopyable : private noncopyable_base { public: noncopyable() : x_(0) {} noncopyable(int x) : x_(x) {} private: int x_; }; and a template that uses value initialization so that the value will get a known value even when the type is POD: template <class T> void doit() { T t = T(); ... } and trying to use those together: doit<noncopyable>(); This works fine on msvc as of VC++ 9.0 but fails on every version of g++ I tested this with (including version 4.5.0) because the copy constructor is private. Two questions: Which behavior is standards compliant? Any suggestion of how to work around this in gcc (and to be clear, changing that to T t; is not an acceptable solution as this breaks POD types). P.S. I see the same problem with boost::noncopyable.

• DataBinding and ErrorProvider - How to provide custom error messages?

  We use BusinessObjects, implementing IDataErrorInfo and IEditableObject. BindingLists with those Objects are added to BindingSources, those are used to bind UserControls and DataGrids on the forms (WinForms). The BindingSource is additionally set as DataSource to the ErrorProvider of the form. We do use currently TextBoxes for Properties of Type int and short. They are validated inside the BusinessObjects with custom validation, like min/max values, etc. That works fine, since error message form our custom validations show up nicely next to the TextBox. However, if the input is greater than the value of an int (e.g. "9999999999") the BindingSource doesn't even try to enter that Value into the BusinesObject but instead gives the errormessage to the errorprovider like "The value for Int32 was too big.". We do not want to bother our users with "Int32" but want a custom errormessage for that. It is nice, that the BindingSource does provide this feature, but is it possible to provide custom error messages for this?

• Accessing E4X nodes having special characters in name without breaking binding chain in flex.

  I am using E4X to bind some values from xml in flex 3. There is a problem when xml tag's (or attribute's) name has special character in it: having xml content var xml:XML = <tag> <special-name att="val" /> </tag> special-name could not be accessed using xml.special-name.@att because it is interpreted as subtraction, on the other hand using square bracket notation xml['special-name'].@att breaks binding chain. Is there an elegant way to solve this (like special language syntax) without writing custom binding setters and listeners?

• log4j/log4cxx : exclusive 1 to 1 relation between logger and appender

  Using the xml configuration of log4cxx (which is identical in configuration to log4j). I want to have a certain logger output exclusively to a specific appender (have it the only logger which outputs to that appender). I found that it's possible to bind a logger to a specific appender like this: <logger name="LoggerName"> <level value="info"/> <appender-ref ref="AppenderName"/> </logger> but it that logger still outputs to the root appender because I have this standard piece in the conf file: <root> <priority value="DEBUG"/> <appender-ref ref="OtherAppender"/> </root> How can I exclude that logger from the root logger? in other words, how do I configure the log such that all loggers inherit the appenders of the root logger except a specific logger?

  I'm trying to use <canvas> in iPhone Safari, and if I place the element in the body, there are unused pixels to the left and top of the element. I tried specifying margin:0;padding:0 with CSS to no avail.   Hi I have a List which returns an array of "Question". My question is how can I bind this to a grid view? When I try to call Question.Ordinal I get that it does not exist in the data source. I am using the following code: GridView1.DataSource = myList.GetQ(); GrdiView1.DataBind(); myList.GetQ() returns a List which is an array of "Question". When I set the column DataField to "!" I get the object Question. My question is how can I get the objects property? I tried "!.Ordinal" does not work. I was reading this post for reference, here, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

• Truncate C++ string fields generated by ostringstream, iomanip:setw

  In C++ I need string representations of integers with leading zeroes, where the representation has 8 digits and no more than 8 digits, truncating digits on the right side if necessary. I thought I could do this using just ostringstream and iomanip.setw(), like this: int num_1 = 3000; ostringstream out_target; out_target << setw(8) << setfill('0') << num_1; cout << "field: " << out_target.str() << " vs input: " << num_1 << endl; The output here is: field: 00003000 vs input: 3000 Very nice! However if I try a bigger number, setw lets the output grow beyond 8 characters: int num_2 = 2000000000; ostringstream out_target; out_target << setw(8) << setfill('0') << num_2; cout << "field: " << out_target.str() << " vs input: " << num_2 << endl; out_target.str(""); output: field: 2000000000 vs input: 2000000000 The desired output is "20000000". There's nothing stopping me from using a second operation to take only the first 8 characters, but is field truncation truly missing from iomanip? Would the Boost formatting do what I need in one step?

  I want to setup my lighttpd server to proxy some requests (for ex. RSS requests) to other domains so i can fetch data using javascript. For example i'd like to fetch Atmo feed from internal Redmine (say http://code.internal.acme) to developer dashboard (say http://dashboard.internal.acme). I'd like to fetch it using JavaScript but i cant use something like JSONP and i don't want to use Flash for that. Currently i have this in my lighttpd.conf proxy.server = ( "/http-bind/" => ( ( "host" => "10.0.100.52", "port" => 5280 ) ) ) This way i can connect to our internal jabber server via Javascript. • Clean way to perform commands in the Emacs minibuffer

  Consider the following example: I want to read a file using ido from the minibuffer, but merge in all of the directories I use often. I can't just execute (ido-find-file) (ido-merge-work-directories) Because the second sexp will only execute after the user is finished selecting the file. The question then is: what is the best/cleanest way to execute commands in the minibuffer's command loop? The only way I know to do this is to bind my desired command to a key sequence, and add that sequence to unread-command-events so the key runs once we enter the minibuffer command loop: (setq unread-command-events (append (listify-key-sequence (kbd "M-s")) unread-command-events)) ; std key-binding for ido-merge-work-directories (ido-find-file) But that is very hacky, and I would like to know if there is a better solution. • SQLAlchemy automatically converts str to unicode on commit

  Hello, When inserting an object into a database with SQLAlchemy, all it's properties that correspond to String() columns are automatically transformed from <type 'str'> to <type 'unicode'>. Is there a way to prevent this behavior? Error at object 'System.Windows.Data.Binding' in markup file 'BurnDisk;component/selectversionpagefunction.xaml' Line 57 Position 29. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
