• Getting client denied when accessing a wsgi graphite script

  I'm trying to set up graphite on my Mac OS X 10.7 lion, i've set up apache to call the python graphite script via WSGI, but when i try to access it, i get a forbiden from apache and in the error log. "client denied by server configuration: /opt/graphite/webapp/graphite.wsgi" I've checked that the scripts location is allowed in httpd.conf, and the permissions of the file, but they seem correct. What do i have to do to get access. • Apache error: could not make child process 25105 exit, attempting to continue anyway

  Hello! I have a web server based on Ubuntu Server 9.10 with this software: apache 2 PHP 5.3 MySQL 5 Python 2.5 Few of my websites are PHP based, few use python/django through mod_wsgi. For month or so, every day my apache server stops responding until I manually restart it. Error logs show: [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25059 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25061 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 24930 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25084 exit, attempting to continue anyway [Fri Mar 05 17:06:47 2010] [error] could not make child process 25105 exit, attempting to continue anyway and so on. I tried to google this problem but it seems, that I can't find a solution there. How can I determine the cause of this error and how do I fix it? Thank you for your help. • mod_wsgi, .htaccess and rewriterule

  I'm using several django projects running on the same apache instance through mod_wsgi, configured with virtualhost for each site, see the httpd.conf here. For one of the sites I want to use static-cache (staticgenerator), so I set up a directory with .htaccess file which contains: RequestHeader unset X-Forwarded-Host RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}/index.html !-f RewriteRule ^(.*) http://127.0.0.1:3456/$1 [P] where 3456 is the django port on the server. Using this rewrite rule, the request is always forwarded to the mod_wsgi handler, even if the file or directory exists, and if the file index.html exists the request shows as request-path/index.html. I tried another setup: RequestHeader unset X-Forwarded-Host RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond $1 !-d RewriteCond $1index.html !-f RewriteRule ^(.*) http://127.0.0.1:3456/$1 [P] but got almost the same results. All requests are transferred to the mod_wsgi handler, but the request path is now the original one. To sum it up: What is the correct RewriteCond to use here? How do you transfer a request to the mod_wsgi handler? Is it the right way? If that's not the way to do it, then how do you serve static files from a directory when they exist, and when they don't you serve from apache/mode_wsgi? Thanks for your help.

• sharing a folder between linux and windows over the internet

  Hello Currently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow. I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian. So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

• How to get nginx to pass HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header to Apache

  Am using Nginx as a reverse proxy to an Apache server that uses HTTP Auth. For some reason, I can't get the HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header through to Apache, it seems to get filtered out by Nginx. Hence, no requests can authenticate. Note that the Basic auth is dynamic so I don't want to hard-code it in my nginx config. Update - turns out the problem was something I had overlooked in my original question: mod_wsgi. The site in question here is a Django site, and it turns out that Apache does get the auth variables passed through, however mod_wsgi filters them out. • System Slow After Uprading Ubuntu

  I have an Ubuntu network machine which has release of 10.04.1 LTS Lucid. On this system I have Apache, PostgreSQL and django. For some app. development I have to install PGP and php-curl. Due to being on network, I have exported a VMware machine to the Internet and firstly I have upgraded the system and then installed php5 packages on it. I don't know is it all about django or apache configuration. Maybe some Apache settings had changed. In this case in apache where I have to look at ? After all replacing it with its old place, I see that the new system query is slow according to another. Old system query time : 140 ms New system query time : 9.11 s I have checked /etc/network interface and it seems there is no problem. I have checked /etc/resolv.conf and it seems OK I have checked /etc/nsswitch.conf and only host section is different from old one which old system has hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 and then I have checked time host -t A services.myapp.com and I got real 0m0.355s user 0m0.010s sys 0m0.020s and I have checked apache2 HostnameLookups : find /etc/apache2/ -type f | xargs grep -i HostnameLookups It returned : /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:# HostnameLookups: Log the names of clients or just their IP addresses /etc/apache2/apache2.conf:HostnameLookups Off and now what can I have to check for boosting my system as before?

• In solaris, how monitor & auto-respond to critical events

  I have a website that randomly fail. Is running in open solaris on joyent. I have a monitoring service that alert me when the site is down, but, I want a way to put a "insider" tool that tell me why that happened. Is because the cpu is too high? Not memory? Which process fail? Is possible to have a backtrace of that? Everything is running on the Solaris Service Management Facility. The webserver is cherokee, the database is mysql and the language is python/django. I want the most simple setup to monitor that & auto-respond , ie: restart the webserver or the django process in case of failure. I prefer a low-overhead tool. I don't need the fancy monitoring that some tools have, no ned graphs or sms alert. Only know what fail, restart it if possible (maybe up to n times), and have a log somewhere when I will check it.

• SQL Developer Q&A from ODTUG Tips & Tricks Webcast

  Another great webcast yesterday – if you’re a paying member of ODTUG you can watch the show for yourself in their archives. If not, you can get my slide deck off of SlideShare. About 150 of you brave souls sat through an entire hour of me talking and then 10 more minutes of Q&A. We went through everything rapid-fire style, so I thought I would post the questions and my refined answers here for your perusal. In the order in which I received them: You showed the preference to choose between resultsets in same tab or ain a new tab. I understand that we can not have it both using different hotkeys? For example: F5 run and resultset to same tab, ctrl-f5 same but to new tab? Sometimes you want the one other times the other. The questioner is asking about this preference, Tools Preferences Database Worksheet ‘Show query results in new tabs.’ This is an all or nothing proposition. But, there’s another, perhaps better way: the document PINs. If you have a result set you don’t want to lose, ‘pin it.’ Pin multiple result sets or plans for review and comparisons. You mentioned that sometimes it’s hard to remember where a certain preference is. I agree. So enhancement request: add a search-box to the preferences window. Maybe like in, for example, UltraEdit. It shows you all preferences containing your search criteria. Actually, we do have a search mechanism type the search string, we auto-filter the preferences Is there a version of SQL Developer that will connect to an 8i database (Yes, I realize how old that database version is!) Sorry, no. We also don’t have a version that will run on Windows 3.11 for Workgroups…probably. How do we access your blog? Carefully, and with much trepidation. When you’re ready, go to http://www.thatjeffsmith.com Is there a way to get good formatting with predefined settings? I believe the questioner is referring to the script output a la SQL*Plus formatting commands. Yes, there is. You can build your formatting commands into your login.sql script, and those will be applied for your script execution sessions. Example here. Why this version 4.0 doesn’t support external plugins? It does, it just requires the plugin developer to re-factor it for OSGi. This came about when we updated the JDeveloper framework to the later 11g/12c stuff. Any change in hookup with SVN? The only change with Subversion is that internally we’re using 1.7 stuff now. You can use SQLDev to work with a 1.8 SVN server, but if you get a working copy with a 1.8 client SQLDev won’t be able to do anything with it… Command line utilities ? improvements Yes! The long answer is here. Is that a Hint or a Comment?? /*CSV*/ It’s a comment – the database won’t recognize it, but SQLDev does when it goes through our statement pre-processor. We’ll redirect the output through our CSV formatter before displaying the results in the Script Output panel. That’s why this will ONLY work in SQL Developer. Are you selecting “”Run Script”" to get that CSV or HTML output, rather than “”Run Statement”"? Yes, the formatter hints like the CSV one mentioned above only make sense in a script output panel vs a grid. How do you save relational models once they’re defined? I’ve had trouble with setting one up, “”saving”" it, then the design work I did is longer there when loading it later. File – Data Modeler – Save. If you’re running the Modeler inside of SQL Developer, the menu’ing interface can get a bit tricky. That’s why I recommend using the stand along if you’re doing anything with a model that takes more than 5 minutes. See how the Data Modeler menus are folded up under the SQL Dev menus? Can u unplug and plug into another container in a database with only sqldeveloper? Yes, you can ‘Detach’ a multitentant 12c Database ‘pluggable’ and plug it into another instance. You have the option to copy or move the files. This isn’t a trivial operation, pay attention Can you run APEX code directly on the adopter? No, at least not as I understand your question. Give me an example and I can give you a better example. Is there a way that when u click on a particular table it wouldn’t show the table with the info but just to see the columns underneath clicking on the node? Yes, another one of my tips! Disable Tools Preferences Datbase ObjectViewer ‘Open Object on Single Click.’ Is there a patch to allow a double click on a procedure on an open package body to take you to that procedure in the editor? This has been fixed for EA3 – to be released soon. Can you open the spec with the body? You can open the spec or the body, and then also open the other. But you can’t open both with a single click. So if you want you can set it to CSV but can you also see it as a regular result set in rows and then click in the results to export to excel? If you run your query as a statement with Ctrl-Enter, you can send the data to Excel via the Export dialog. Will it do intellisense like using the alias and pop up the column, object names? Yes! You can select more than one column… Can a DBA turn off items from a high level for users so the only thing they can perform would be selects? A DBA should turn things ON, not OFF. Create a user with only CONNECT and required SELECT privs and you’re good to go, regardless of which application they are using. I use PL/SQL Developer from allround automations and was SQL Developer illiterate and now I like this for myself as a DBA. Now I get to train developers on this tool since they have been asking how to use this tool. Thank you. No, THANK YOU! Can you run multi queries in the worksheet after you added it to the worksheet? Yes, highlight what you want to run, and hit Ctrl-Enter. Can you export the result sets to excel, etc. Yes. In version 4.0 and going forward, I recommend you use the XLSX option for exports. It will run faster and consume much, much less memory. Will this be available after the webinar? If you are a ODTUG member, check out the webinar recordings in the archives. That’s worth the $99 right there. Ask your boss if they have $99 in their training budget for you. If not, maybe time to look for another job? Can you run command lines from this tool? You can setup external tools under the Tools menu, and from there you could probably rig what you’re looking for, but I’m not sure what you’re looking for… This maybe?Where and when to put the program Is there any way to save a copy database command set (certain tables/views etc) in a script? Yes! Create a cart with the objects you want to be used in the Copy. Then use the new command-line interface to kick off SQL Developer to do the copy of those said objects. How can we export the preference and then import them into different or same version of SQL Developer ? Today, there’s no interface for this. But you could copy the files around manually…Kris Rice has a cool idea where you can set your preferences to be saved to your local drop box folder and then you can use SQL Developer from anywhere with the same preferences What happens to SQL*Plus commands like COL & BREAK Nothing. Those are not currently supported. Is there a place where all “”hotkey”" functionality is listed? thanks Yes. Tools – Preferences – Shortcut Keys. And you can change them! Any tips for the DBA side of things? will the SQL generated for objects have more information (e.g. user privileges) in v4? You can get this now. In Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export, check ‘Grants.’ Voila! You now have the code necessary to recreate your object privileges Is there a limit on the number of rows that could be imported / exported from/to excel ? The only hard-coded limit lies in Excel. • NHibernate Session Management Advice

  I need some advice on NHibernate Session Management for a C# WinForms application. I am currently porting an application to use NHibernate. I am also employing a UnitOfWork pattern as described in the link below; http://nhforge.org/wikis/patternsandpractices/nhibernate-and-the-unit-of-work-pattern.aspx My question relates to Sessions. Can you only have one session running per thread at all times? I have a scenario in which a Session (UnitOfWork) may be open for a form shown by the application but the user opens another form (i.e. Tools - Options) which I would like to have its own UnitOfWork. Clearly in this instance it would make more sense to open another Session for the "Tools - Options" form and not use the currently open session for the underlying form. Can we have a Dictionary of Sessions on the one thread? Any advice on session management is appreciated.

• Retry web service call if authentication failure requires re-login

  I'm consuming a web service from C#, and the web service requires a login call and then uses cookie sessions. The web service will time out sessions after a certain timeframe, after which the client will have to re-login. I'd like to find a way to automatically catch the soap fault the service sends back in this scenario, and handle it by re-logging in and then retrying the previously attempted call. I would prefer to do this somehow automatically for all the web service methods in question, rather than having to manually wrap the calls with the retry logic. Suggestions?

• JMS Session pooling for large numbers of Topic subscribers

  I'm writing an app that will create lots of JMS topic subscribers. What is best practise regarding reusing sessions? A session per subscriber? A pool of sessions? With a session per subscriber the thread count seems unreasonable. Is this a job for something like a ServerSessionPool? What I've seen so far seems to suggest that ServerSessionPool is more geared towards one receiver consuming messages concurrently rather than lots of receivers. I'm currently working with HornetQ 2.0.0GA embedded in JBoss 4.3.0CP6.

• What is the best way to manage one's session variables?

  In my .NET web app, I keep basic user info in a user session object. I also usually keep a director class in the session; which is basically just has info about whatever thing it being worked on on that screen (like a customer id). I am trying to keep from adding a ton of sessions. I also want to make sure at any given time ONLY the sessions that are necessary are in memory. This means I need an effective way of managing my session variables. Any suggestions?

• How to prevent multiple browser windows from sharing the same session in asp.net.

  I have ASP.net application that is basically a data entry screen for a physical inspection process. The users want to be able to have multiple browser windows open and enter data from multiple inspections concurrently. At first I was using cookie based sessions, and obviously this blew up. I switched to using cookie-less sessions, which stores the session in the URL and in testing this seemed to resolve the problem. Each browser window/tab had a different session ID, and data entered in one did not clobber data entered in the other. However my users are more efficient at breaking things than I expected and it seems that they're still managing to get the same session between browsers sometimes. I think that they're copying/pasting the address from one tab to the other in order to open the application, but I haven't been able to verify this yet (they're at another location so I can't easily ask them). Other than telling them don't copy and paste, or convince them to only enter one at a time, how can I prevent this situation from occurring?

  I have some providers, say - <Providers> <Provider Type="Providers.IM" Name="Im"/> <Provider Type="Providers.Web" Name="Web"/> ... </Provider> Each of these providers can give me a session : <Sessions> <Session Name="GoogleIM" Provider="Im" URL="..." /> <Session Name="YahooIM" Provider="Im" URL="..." /> <Session Name="YahooWeb" Provider="Web" URL="..." /> ... </Session> Currently, I instantiate "named" sessions by looking at the provider, instantiating the type, and injecting the URL (manually). I could use a session factory, which would probably have to understand the url and return a proper session. Is there a way to handle this more elegantly/simply with ninject/autofac?

• Problems with ASP.NET State Service version; state service is 1.1, website is 3.5

  Hi there, I have a ASP.NET 3.5 website running on Windows Server 2003 and I'm using the ASP.NET State Service to manage sessions. It will appear to be working then I regularly get an error saying my code needs to have version 2.0 of the State Service running to work (I think that's what it said, I've temporarily switched back to storing sessions InProc). Refresh the page and the error goes away (for a bit, it's bound to come back). So I looked at the properties of the ASP.NET State Service in the Services interface and it's mapping to a .exe in the 1.1 framework folder: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_state.exe There's a corresponding version in the 2.0 framework folder, but I don't know how to add it as a new service. I'm also not sure that adding the 2.0 version (and stopping and/or removing the 1.1 version) will solve the problem. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. Mick

• Analysis services with non normalized table

  I have a table with several million rows. Each row represents a user session. There is a column called user which is not unique. There can be multiple sessions per user. I want to use Analysis services to get me the additional properties per user. Example: How many users (unique!) had a session longer than x minutes. How is that possible without changing the database. Note: there is no lookup-table and I cannot create one. What I am able of at the moment is to ask how many sessions were longer then x minutes.

• Override Devise Sign-in with reCaptcha

  I'm trying to override the Rails devise login to include recaptcha. I followed the steps here http://presentations.royvandewater.com/authentication-with-devise.html#8 however for some reason, authentication always fails. To isolate the problem, I removed all my code and called super directly class SessionsController < Devise::SessionsController def create super end end file is at: Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions_controller.rb the slide suggest Rails.root/app/controllers/sessions.rb but I assume that was just a mistake. Trying it out didn't help either. I even copied the full Sessions Controller code into my own, still gives the problem. Authentication fails here specifically: resource = warden.authenticate!(:scope => resource_name, :recall => "#{controller_path}#new") Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

• Sqlalchemy layout with WSGI application

  I'm working on writing a small WSGI application using Bottle and SqlAlchemy and am confused on how the "layout" of my application should be in terms of SqlAlchemy. My confusion is with creating engines and sessions. My understanding is that I should only create one engine with the 'create_engine' method. Should I be creating an engine instance in the global namespace in some sort of singleton pattern and creating sessions based off of it? How have you done this in your projects? Any insight would be appreciated. The examples in the documentation dont seem to make this entirely clear (unless I'm missing something obvious). Any thoughts?

  Hey Everybody I'm trying to understand better how windows sessions work, so if I have some weird mistakes in the question, please, let me know :-) . I use LsaEnumerateLogonSessions() to get all the logged on sessions in the system. Now I have LUID that represents a log-on, and if I understand correctly, it represents a user that logged on or a build it user like SYSTEM. Now, if user X starts a process, windows gives that process a token that represents X. So here comes my question: Is there a way (in a windows service) to get the user's token from LUID? I know I can get it from a process HANDLE, but that is not what I want... Thanks a lot!
