• I'v installed NetBeans 6.8 on my MacOS X MacBook and the logs say it cannot be run, any ideas?

  I've installed NetBeans 6.8 on my MacBook, and the installation results indicated success. However, every single time I attempt to run the application is shuts down. I monitored the process and noticed the following entries in the console that imply the application cannot be found? 3/19/10 10:20:20 PM [0x0-0x22022].org.netbeans.ide.baseide.200912041610[22168] /Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans 6.8.app/Contents/MacOS/netbeans: line 57: dirname: command not found 3/19/10 10:20:20 PM [0x0-0x22022].org.netbeans.ide.baseide.200912041610[22168] Cannot read cluster file: /../etc/netbeans.clusters 3/19/10 10:20:20 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[77] ([0x0-0x22022].org.netbeans.ide.baseide.200912041610[22168]) Exited with exit code: 1 I started researching how to set the default JDK for use by NetBeans, and found repeated use of the following command line entry; netbeans --jdkhome /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home -- from http://wiki.netbeans.org/JDKVersionAndMacOS When I attempt the command line above, I receive "netbeans command not found". So do I ... 1.) Need to create a command called "netbeans" that points to my install location for NetBeans 6.8? If so how do I do that? 2.) How do I get to the netbeans.conf file for NetBeans 6.8, does one even exist for it? It gets even more interesting, the above happens with Eclipse as well. Yippie.

  Hi, I have developed web applications using JSF (myfaces components). But in these days of responsive UI, JSF doesnt fare well. I m hearing a lot about AJAX, GWT, etc. So i wanted your opinion on which web technology/framework should i learn inorder to develop web applications for enterprise products. Some of the web technologies that i m hearing are: ICE Faces (With AJAX Bridge support) GWT extJS and extGWT JavaFX Apache Wicket Jquery AJAX Open laszlo Which of the above or the combination of the above would help me ? Some of the parameters on which you can rate these web technologies are: Ease of learning Maintainability of web application code Community support IDE support - Eclipse or NetBeans Off the shelf component availability (like textbox,table grids, option menus) License - Does it cost for commercial use ? User Experience - responsive UI. Shouldnt be sluggish A similar question on SO does answer my question partially. Would want more info though. EDIT: Answers collated: Based on the answers : AJAX would be the best thing to start for learning fundamentals, then learn JQUERY. Any component based frame work that can complement ajax,jquery ? Edit 2: If i had to design a web application like StackOverFlow (in java platform) which would be the best choice to learn and adopt? • Single Form with Multiple Dynamic Buttons

  I've spent hours/days trying to figure this out and now I'm completely perplexed so I thought I'd give stackoverflow a try. I'm (a newb) working in Java/JSP using Eclipse hosting on Google App Engine trying to develop an app for a volunteer organization I'm a member of. Rather than embarrass myself by showing my current code I'd love just a nudge in the right direction. I have a form (which doubles as a report basically) showing "people" grouped under the "task" they are currently working on. I would like to select multiple people from multiple tasks and reassign them to another task e.g. Bill and Jane are Gardening, Jeff is Painting. I want to select Jane and Jeff (all people have an associated checkbox in the form) and re-assign them to Sweeping (which is a task on the form but has no people assigned to it yet). Ideally, the re-assignment to Sweeping would be via a Sweeping button (each task would have a dynamically-created task button) that would pass the "Sweeping" value to a servlet along with an array or list of people whose checkbox has been checked. The servlet would handle the request (creating an Assignment "object/entity" with timeStamp, personId, taskId) and then re-direct back to the form/report which would then repaint with the current tasks/people generated from the Assignments class in the datastore. All the tasks are user-defined and retrieved from the database when building the form. Ditto the people. I've been trying to keep the jsp for presentation and the servlets for the processing but I'm no purist and would just like to get unstuck. Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

• My simple program runs on Android emulator, but not on my Nexus One

  To clarify, I have no trouble getting the Nexus One connected in developer's mode. I can actually get Eclipse to "run" my program on my Nexus One. However, my Nexus One simply gets stuck in a reboot loop. I've also created an .apk file and put it onto my Nexus One, installing it with apkInstaller. However, it crashed while installing. I see my app on my phone, but I'm kind of afraid to run it. I am not doing anything fancy in my program; all it does is generate text by shuffling a couple arrays of strings together. It uses a bunch of text views, two buttons, and a spinner. I have only edited the main source file, the strings XML file, and the layout XML file, nothing else. It's a 2.1-update1 program and it runs fine on the emulator. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm using Windows 7 (32 bit) and my Nexus One is running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1. I'm pretty sure it's my code that's causing the problem. Now I'm just wondering if there are any common mistakes that would lead my app to run on the emulator but not on my device.   Hi, I am looking for a solution to automatically create .m3u playlists for each music folder in my sdcard so that the music player can play music by folders. I had written a simple VB.Net app in the past that does exactly the above but apparently, it has to be run from Windows. Since I have no Java nor Android developing experience I found it quite hard to try to write a similar app that can be run directly from the phone. In a few words, the app does the following: 1) Searches the SD and lists all folders that contain 2 or more .mp3 files (just for user verification) 2) Creates in every listed folder above, a .m3u file that simply lists line-by-line all the mp3 files that exist in the specific folder. Is there such an app or could someone spare some time and give me some rough instructions on how to create it in Eclipse 3.5.2 environment? (device used: Motorola Droid/Milestone, Android 2.1) I don't care about any graphics or complex UI, just a script to execute the above procedure that would give every "playlist-supporting" music player in Android, the precious ability to play music by folders. I know it is too much to ask but just in case! Thanx in advance.

  Hi there, I have a very deep list of lists in R. Now I want to print this list to the standard output to get a better overview of the elements. It should look like the way the StatET plugin for eclipse shows a list. • On Windows 7: Same path but Explorer & Java see different files than Powershell

  Submitted for your approval, a story about a poor little java process trapped in the twilight zone... Before I throw up my hands and just say that the NTFS partition is borked is there any rational explanation of what I am seeing. I have a file with a path like this C:\Program Files\Company\product\config\file.xml I am reading this file after an upgrade and seeing something wonky. Eclipse and my Java app are still seeing the old version of this file while some other programs see the new version. The test that convinced my it was not my fat finger that caused the problem was this: In Explorer I entered the above path and Explorer displayed the old version of the file. Forcing Explorer to reload via Ctrl-F5 still yields the old version. This is the behavior I get in Java. Now in PowerShell I enter more "C:\Program Files\Company\product\config\file.xml" I cut and past the path from Explorer to make sure I am not screwing anything up and it shows me the new version of the file. So for the programming aspect of this, is there a cache or some system component that would be storing this stale reference. Am I responsible for checking or reseting that for some class of files. I can imagine somebody being "creative" in how xml files are processed to provide some bell or whistle. But it could be a case of just being borked. Any insights appreciated...Thanks!

  Hi I've a SmartGWT application which interacts with a mysql database using rpc services. Suppose it as a simple form with a textbox & two save & load buttons. My database & tables & all fields collation is utf8_persian_ci. All java source files & module html & xml files have saved with utf8 character set. & also I've a meta tag in module html file which contains my form : <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> my application works correctly in eclipse develpment mode & also in my local tomcat server. Then i put it on remote server (I compress it using jar.exe into a war file with -cvf flag & then upload it using my server's plesk control panel). In this mode, when I load data from a mysql table (load a record from any table), data will load into my form with no problem, but when I want to save some data (in persian language), mysql just writes some ? (question sign) in characteristic table fields. Any idea ?

• Which JavaScript framework for me?

  This is not to be a subjective question; nor is it intended to start a religious war. Which JavaScript framework for me? Until now, I haven't coded any JS at all (no biggy, it's just another language). I have been set in my ways and eschewed any client-side code, lest the user have JS turned off, or try to "just change this a little, to see what happens" - and then expect me to support it. So, until now it has all been server-side, with PHP and an ODBC compliant database. However, I am beginning to see advantages to client-side input validation and improved graphical experience for users which would help me to produce more professional web-based applications. I am looking for a framework which : doesn't have a steep learning curve is full-featured, although that does not mean that the one with the most features wins (remember the 80/20 rule) is mature an stable (even if still in development) integrates well with common IDEs if possible. I use NetBeans for PHP (and occasionally MS visual studio for C# (I seem to have drifted away from Eclipse)) allows me to develop web sites/apps for mobile devices support for Goggle charts (or other charting) would be a bonus has good AJAX/JSON support, but I imagine that they all do Taking that into consideration, is there a "right" framework for me, or does it not really matter? I looked briefly at JQuery and JQueryGui and liked what I saw, but I really don't have time, owing to deadlines, to try them all out and see which one suits me, much as I know that I ought to.

So, when I run my unittest, in the bash it raise an failure that the response.status_code is always 302 instead of 200. All right though through this result I can check the auth mod is running well, it is not like what I want it to be. Is there anything specific I have to do when I add extra classes in a hook? Any advice/input would be appreciated. Then I sent an readerThread.interrupt() to the reader thread and the thread terminated, too. But there was still a thread running that wasn't terminating. This thread kept my java application running even if it exited its main method. With the debugger (eclipse) I wasn't able to suspend this thread. After I quit the opened command window, my java program exited, too. Question How can I quit my java program while the command window stays open?

• Website often sticks, but clicking the link again everything loads fine

  Hi I have a website, which normally is very fast, however in the last week or two we're run into a problem whereby randomly if you click a link the browser will just sit there with the throbber spinning but the page doesn't appear to load If you click the link again it then responds straight away This doesn't seem to be limited to Chrome, Firefox or IE as we've tried all with all having same problems The site is build in ASP and connects to a MySQL database and runs on a dedicated windows 2003 server The firewalls were changed in the data centre recently to pixies but I've not been able to reproduce the problem outside of the office Within the office, we have 11 people (only 7 today and still experiencing problems) connected to a 7MB ADSL connection with Eclipse I have made some changes to the network in the office, namely wiring 4 desks back to the main 24 port switch rather than to small 5 port which then linked on to the 24 port switch... however we were having problems before this was done, and I did this to try and rule out an issue with the switch We have a backup ADSL connection, so I may try switching to that, or switching to a different router, but do you think this is a likely issue? • Publishing artifacts with sources on archiva

  At work I'm dipping my toes in managing project dependencies with maven. We use Apache Archiva (1.2.1) as a local repository and proxy. I'm adding artifact for open source project, that is not published on any public repository. I've learned that to publish the sources I should use the Classifier field on Upload artifact page. The sources are then listed alongside the jar and pom when I browse the repository. But when I update my maven dependencies I get only the jar and pom from the repository. I noticed that sources are also missing when the archiva proxies for me the downloads from other public repositories. I didn't find any configuration options in Archiva's admin pages to serve the sources... What am I missing? Update: I was missing the fact that artifact sources have to be downloaded manually. I.e. the maven client has to request them, which is controlled by command line option -DdownloadSources=true. Maven Integration for Eclipse has a preference setting to always download them as described in Resolving artifact sources. Archiva then serves the sources for local artifacts or proxies the request to remote repositories and caches the sources for future requests.

  We are porting our .NET library to a java equivalent and is now looking at how to distribute this port. Packaging the classes into a jar-file seems like best practice and we would then ship this jar file in a zip along with some license terms. But what about the documentation? In .NET land it seems like best practice to distribute the xml file that can be consumed by tooling (Visual Studio) but we can't seem to find such best practices for java. We have javadoc comments on our public classes and interfaces, so we are just looking for a way to generate and distribute these comments in a way that is developer friendly (we're thinking easily consumed from various IDEs). What are developers expecting and how do you best deliver this? We would really prefer to bundle the documentation along with the jar file and not have to host the documentation on our website EDIT: We would like for our documentation to appear inside the java IDEs so we want to provide the documentation in a way that integrates into the IDEs as gracefully as possible. In .NET land this is as an xml file placed next to the .dll file, but is there a similar concept for jar files that enables the integration into tooling? PS: We are developing in Eclipse and have an ant task doing the building and jar-file packaing in our automated build.

• Simple Java Applet not loading in FireFox / Safari on MacOS

  Hello all, I'm probably missing something very basic here. I'm trying to get my first applet to run inside a local HTML page in Firefox 3.6 on Mac OS 10.5.8. Here's the applet's code: package SimpleApplet; import java.applet.Applet; import java.awt.*; public class MyApplet extends Applet { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; public void init() { } public void stop() { } public void paint(Graphics g) { g.drawString("Tweedle-Dee!",20,40); } } Here's the HTML page: <html> <body> Here's the applet: <br/> <applet code="MyApplet.class" width="300" height="150"> </applet> </body> </html> Both files (.class and .html) are in the same folder on my local machine. Now when I load the .html file into Firefox, a rectangle with a red X gets displayed. The applet works when started from Eclipse (using JRE 1.5 BTW). Also, it's not a general problem with my browser, as several pages with applets (e.g. http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/Blink/example1.html) work. This is also difficult to troubleshoot because there is no output at all on the Java console... Any suggestions are appreciated!

• Java: how to debug an invalid JSTL declaration?

  I've seen this kind of issue on SO (and on the Net overall) quite a few times. For example here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884529 Earlier today I was trying on a JSP (regular .jsp, not .jspx) to do this, because I stupidly cut/pasted some example found on the net: <%@ taglib prefix = "c" uri = "http://java.sun.com/jstl/core"%> Then my .jsp was giving a blank page. No error message in the Tomcat log. No nothing. Just a blank page. While, of course (I'm being sarcastic here), the correct line was this: <%@ taglib prefix = "c" uri = "http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"%> There was a "jsp/" missing (which I found a hint to in yet another SO question). So obviously such issues are common. I can't believe you have to wait for things "not to work" to know you've there's an error and I'm honestly a bit confuzzabled by the number of questions found on the net (and here on SO) where the answer is basically "fix your declaration". My question here is simple: how do you know that it's a declaration issue? What thought process is required here to diagnose and troubleshoot such issues? Are there tools that can help here? (I don't know, like, say, IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse or Emacs in nxml-mode warning you in real time that the declared URI is invalid?)

I have defined a simple grammar which is supposed to include arithmetic expressions with numbers and identifiers (strings that start with a letter and continue with one or more letters or numbers.) • Axis2 Webservice -> php

  Hi! If I have understood Axis2 correct i can construct a WebService and then access it with any SOAP compatible client. I have a java class with a couple of methods that I have written in Eclipse, and then automatically constructed a service with the Axis2 plugin from WTP. This is the methods of my class. public int test(int i){ return i+2; } public Car CarTest(int speed){ return new Car("Biltest", speed); } public CarFactoryAdapter getCarFactory(){ carFact.getCars().add(new Car("Bmw", 250)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("seat", 350)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("saab", 150)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("volv", 50)); return new CarFactoryAdapter(carFact); } The code seems to work when I try it with soapUI and the Axis2-web interface has recognized the methods of my service. But when Iam trying the methods that receives parameters with PHP´s built in soapClient i get a Unknown exception. The getCarFactory methods works at least as expected, but it seems kind of crippled if I can´t send parameters. • My perl script is acting funny...

  I am trying to make a jabber bot from scratch and my script is acting funny. I was originally developing the bot on a remote CentOS box, but I have switched to a local Win7 machine. Right now I'm using ActiveState Perl and I'm using Eclipse with the perl plugin to run a debug the script. The funny behavior I'm experiencing occurs when I run or debug the script. If I run the script using the debugger it works fine, meaning I can send messages to the bot and it can send messages to me. However when I just execute the script normally the bot sends the successful connection message then it disconnects from my jabber server and the script ends. I'm a novice when it comes to perl and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My guess is it has something to do with the subroutines and sending the presence of the bot. (I know for sure that it has something to do with sending the bot's presence because if the presence code is removed, the script behaves as expected except the bot doesn't appear to be online.) If anyone can help me with this that would be great.
