  • Architecture for interfacing multiple applications

    Let's say you have a Master Database and a few External/Internal applications that use WebServices to interface data. What would be your preferred architecture to interface data from and to those applications? Would you put some sort of Enterprise Service Bus in between? Like BizTalk? Or something cheaper? We don't want to block applications while they are interfacing, but we do want to use return codes from the interfaces to determine if we need to take some actions in the originating application or not.

  • Is Ubuntu workable as a laptop for an IT consultant?

    I work as a consultant programmer, typically in large businesses. I use a Windows Laptop, and many of my colleagues use a Mac. My personal preference would be to run Ubuntu if I could have complete control over my development environment. But I will have occasional need for Microsoft specific products, especially IE. My colleagues that use a Mac often run Windows on a virtual machine for these situations. My question is: Is Ubuntu a workable solution for the laptop of an enterprise programmer? For example, is it as easy to run Windows on a VM on Ubuntu as it is on a Mac? Has anyone out there tried this? Is there any particular reason why Ubuntu would not serve as well as a Mac for development in this environment? Note that I am not doing .NET development, so I am typically dealing with Java that is going to be run on an Apache server and used by clients running Windows.

Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a back-end in Java? Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a front-end UI in Java? Why do large enterprises lean towards developing in Java rather than adopt more modern (and standardized) technologies? *disclaimer: I'm not a fan of Java in the enterprise, I'm simply curious what drives enterprises to continue the trend.

  • What are options for 3rd Party Centralized Software Settings Management?

    I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

  • What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

    Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.

  • Customising Flex Datagrid or alternative solutions

    I'm currently building an application that is presenting tabular (fetched from a webservice) data and have squirted it into a datagrid - seemed the most obvious way to present it on screen. I've now come across a few limitations in the datagrid and wonder how I might move forward. As a relative newcomer to flex development I'm a little lost. A few things I am wanting to do. The data is logically split into groups and I would like to be able to have subheadings in the grid whenever I move to a new group. I would like to be able to highligh individual cells based on their content relative to other values in the row - ie highlight the cell with the highest value in the row. Is this possible with the standard datagrid? I'm actually using the try-before-you-buy version of flex builder at the moment but I have ordered Flex Builder 3 Pro - which is on its way to me. I understand there is an 'advanced datagrid' control in this version - perhaps that will support some of what I wish to do? Alternatively - is there another way of building custom tabular data?

  • Would you store binary data in database or in file system?

    This is a question which has been asked before (large-text-and-images-in-sql) but mainly for data which will be changed. In my case the data will be stored and never changed. Just seems sensible to keep everything together. Are there any reasons why I should not store static binary data in a database? Assuming it is a sensible thing to do, are there any advantages to storing such data in separate tables? (You might begin to realise now that I'm not a DB expert...) Clarify: There will probably be no more than 10-20 users but these will be in the US and in the UK. The binary data will have to be transfered in any case.

  • How to separate model and view with Core Data?

    I have a subclass of UIView which draws itself based on data held in a corresponding model class, which is a subclass of NSManagedObject. The problem is, some fields in the data model (e.g. the position of the view) are already held in the view (i.e. the frame property in this case). I then have a data duplication/synchronization problem to solve. To complicate matters further, the view needs to update in response to changes made to the data model and the data model needs to be updated in responses made to the view (e.g. the user dragging it to a new location). What's the best way to solve this? Using KVO and references in both directions? Or is there a better approach?

I want to have a new Google account, and I need to move everything from my current account to the new one. I did sign in to another Chrome and transferred my bookmarks using the Export/Import option. How can I transfer all the Google Chrome data, saved usernames and passwords, and everything else to the new account?

    We run a news server for our engineering teams, which is also linked to the code repositories (so that all engineers can subscribe to any changes in the repos or just the projects they are interested in). On quite a regular basis (several times a day) I (as the sysadmin for that server) receive bounces from innd with the above as the first line. The news server simply rejects these messages and the articles don't get posted. So far I have found out these headers are linked to messages in RTF format (coming from Outlook clients), where normally the formatting information would be stored in a winmail.dat attachment. The clients all use MS Exchange 2010 servers to send their mail (identified above as uk-swa-ex02.aminocom.com) which forwards the message to the news server. Does anybody know what advice I need to give these users to avoid their articles getting bounced? Or can I change the behaviour of innd? Or do I need to filter these headers out before innd processes the articles?

  • First Experience with Web Services

    When I first started programming with Microsoft .Net (1.0 Framework) I had a strong desire to learn how search engines indexed web sites. At that time I was a working as a search engine spammer creating web pages to generate traffic for specific themes for various clients. One way I attempted to better understand .Net was to build a web spider that analyzed web pages on demand. An example of the spider is hosted at AddLinkz.com. After my spider was built I had no real idea what I could/should do with it until I found the MSN Search API. I used this web service to compare its results with my spider. Additionally, I used the API to feed my .Net web spider new URLs from the API based on specific search terms. MSN’s search API was very easy to use, I just had to request information by calling a web URL with parameters via a Get request and the results were returned in XML. At that time all requests were limited to XML responses and a maximum of 1,000 results per query.   Since then the entire API has gone through several reconstructions, rebranding and new search services.  Microsoft’s new Bing API replaced the older MSN search API and added several new search capabilities. These new features allow search data to be returned for web searches, image searches, new searches, and related search terms to name a few.   • Can I improve my AdWords quality scores with better landing pages?

    I noticed that I have some keywords in my AdWords that are totally applicable to my site but the quality score of the keyword is 4 or 5. I'd like to get it up higher by creating custom versions of my site's home page (landing page) targeted specifically for people searching on those keywords. So for example, if we pretend my site sells pet food, my current home page has the phrase "dog food." I have a specific AdWords campaign for people searching on cat food (with cat food-specific ads). I'm thinking about changing the URL on those ads to something like http://mysite.com/cat.html, so a different home page comes up with the phrase "cat food." My thinking is that will help Google see that this new landing page is appropriate for the keywords and will raise my quality score for the "cat food" keywords. (Note that none of what I'm doing is shady or misleading; nobody would disagree that all of the keywords and ads I've created are perfect and appropriate for what my site offers.) Question: is what I describe the correct way to raise poor quality scores on keywords, and will it help?

  • Routing generated paths in Ruby on Rails

    I'm a beginner in ruby-on-rails and I spent my last hour trying to do the following thing: I have a ruby-on-rails application - the blog with posts and categories. I want to have another URL for the posts (I would like to have http://localhost:3000/news instead of http://localhost:3000/posts) First I tried to replace the controller and classes from Posts to News, but I gave up(because of the annoyng singular-plural thing). Then in my I replaced map.resources :posts (case 1) to map.resources :news, :controller => "posts" #case 2 or map.resources :posts, :as => 'news' #case 3 in routes.rb as I saw on some websites. It doesn't work either. How can I do this?   • (SQL) Selecting from a database based on multiple pairs of pairs

    The problem i've encountered is attempting to select rows from a database where 2 columns in that row align to specific pairs of data. IE selecting rows from data where id = 1 AND type = 'news'. Obviously, if it was 1 simple pair it would be easy, but the issue is we are selecting rows based on 100s of pair of data. I feel as if there must be some way to do this query without looping through the pairs and querying each individually. I'm hoping some SQL stackers can provide guidance. Here's a full code break down: Lets imagine that I have the following dataset where history_id is the primary key. I simplified the structure a bit regarding the dates for ease of reading. table: history history_id id type user_id date 1 1 news 1 5/1 2 1 news 1 5/1 3 1 photo 1 5/2 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 6 1 news 1 5/4 7 2 photo 1 5/4 8 2 photo 1 5/5 If the user wants to select rows from the database based on a date range we would take a subset of that data. SELECT history_id, id, type, user_id, date FROM history WHERE date BETWEEN '5/3' AND '5/5' Which returns the following dataset history_id id type user_id date 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 6 1 news 1 5/4 7 2 photo 1 5/4 8 2 photo 1 5/5 Now, using that subset of data I need to determine how many of those entries represent the first entry in the database for each type,id pairing. IE is row 4 the first time in the database that id: 3, type: news appears. So I use a with() min() query. In real code the two lists are programmatically generated from the result sets of our previous query, here I spelled them out for ease of reading. WITH previous AS ( SELECT history_id, id, type FROM history WHERE id IN (1,2,3,4) AND type IN ('news','photo') ) SELECT min(history_id) as history_id, id, type FROM previous GROUP BY id, type Which returns the following data set. history_id id type user_id date 1 1 news 1 5/1 2 1 news 1 5/1 3 1 photo 1 5/2 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 6 1 news 1 5/4 7 2 photo 1 5/4 8 2 photo 1 5/5 You'll notice it's the entire original dataset, because we are matching id and type individually in lists, rather than as a collective pairs. The result I desire is, but I can't figure out the SQL to get this result. history_id id type user_id date 1 1 news 1 5/1 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 7 2 photo 1 5/4 Obviously, I could go the route of looping through each pair and querying the database to determine it's first result, but that seems an inefficient solution. I figured one of the SQL gurus on this site might be able to spread some wisdom. In case I'm approaching this situation incorrectly, the gist of the whole routine is that the database stores all creations and edits in the same table. I need to track each users behavior and determine how many entries in the history table are edits or creations over a specific date range. Therefore I select all type:id pairs from the date range based on a user_id, and then for each pairing I determine if the user is responsible for the first that occurs in the database. If first, then creation else edit. Any assistance would be awesome.

Prior to joining Altimeter, I was an Industry Analyst at Forrester covering Social Computing, and before that, deployed and managed the social media program at Hitachi Data Systems in Santa Clara.  Around that time, I started a career blog called Web Strategy which focused on how companies were using the web to connect with customers --and never looked back. Q: As an industry analyst, what are you focused on these days? J.O.: There are three trends that I'm focused my research on at this time:  1) The Dynamic Customer Journey:  Individuals (both b2c and b2b) are given so many options in their sources of data, channels to choose from and screens to consume them on that we've found that at each given touchpoint there are 75 potential permutations.  Companies that can map this, then deliver information to individuals when they need it will have a competitive advantage and we want to find out who's doing this.  2) One of the sub themes that supports this trend is Social Performance.  Yesterday's social web was disparate engagement of humans, but the next phase will be data driven, and soon new technologies will emerge to help all those that are consuming, publishing, and engaging on the social web to be more efficient with their time through forms of automation.  As you might expect, this comes with upsides and downsides.  3) The Sentient World is our research theme that looks out the furthest as the world around us (even inanimate objects) become 'self aware' and are able to talk back to us via digital devices and beyond.  Big data, internet of things, mobile devices will all be this next set. Q: People cite that the line between work and life is getting more and more blurred. Do you see your personal life influencing your professional work? J.O.: The lines between our work and personal lives are dissolving, and this leads to a greater upside of being always connected and have deeper relationships with those that are not.  It also means a downside of society expectations that we're always around and available for colleagues, customers, and beyond.  In the future, a balance will be sought as we seek to achieve the goals of family, friends, work, and our own personal desires.  All of this is being ironically written at 430 am on a Sunday am.  Q: How can people keep up with what you’re working on? Altimeter was able to play a minor role in suggesting the theme for the event “Faster Than Real Time” which stems off previous LeWebs that focused on the “Real time web”. In this radical state, companies are able to anticipate the needs of their customers by using data, technology, and devices and deliver meaningful experiences before customers even know they need it.   • How do I properly host a WCF Data Service in IIS? Why am I getting errors?

    I'm playing around with WCF Data Services (ADO.NET Data Services). I have an entity framework model pointed at the AdventureWorks database. When I debug my svc file from within Visual Studio, it works great. I can say /awservice.svc/Customers and get back the ATOM feed I expect. If I publish the service (hosted in an ASP.NET web application) to IIS7, the same query string returns a 500 fault. The root svc page itself works as expected and successfully returns ATOM. The /Customers path fails.   • Can Core Data be used for objects with variable schemas?

    I'm implementing a new iPhone app and am relatively new to Cocoa development overall. I am at the stage of choosing how the persistence layer of this app will work, and it looks like I'm basically choosing between Core Data and sqlite3. The persisted models in this app are intended to have a schema that is loaded at runtime (from some kind of defn file, probably XML). By which I mean, this app is intended to have objects that are user-definable to some extent, e.g. the Customer type (which has certain built-in fields like "name" and "email") can be modified to have extra fields based on the user's specific needs (e.g. a user might want to add a "favourite fruit" field to their Customer type). Having said that, will Core Data work for an app with a non-baked-in data model like this? I've just started playing around with the Core Data object designer thing in XCode and it seems like this thing wants to work with objects that have fixed fields that are compiled in. I'm definitely trying to take the path of least resistance here, and I can see the benefits of using an Apple-supplied data framework, but don't want to start down that path if it's going to lock me into a data model that's defined at compile time.

I am working with an exactly identical service on an internal development network and it is fine.   • Type-safe generic data structures in plain-old C?

    I have done far more C++ programming than "plain old C" programming. One thing I sorely miss when programming in plain C is type-safe generic data structures, which are provided in C++ via templates. For sake of concreteness, consider a generic singly linked list. In C++, it is a simple matter to define your own template class, and then instantiate it for the types you need. In C, I can think of a few ways of implementing a generic singly linked list: Write the linked list type(s) and supporting procedures once, using void pointers to go around the type system. Write preprocessor macros taking the necessary type names, etc, to generate a type-specific version of the data structure and supporting procedures. Use a more sophisticated, stand-alone tool to generate the code for the types you need. I don't like option 1, as it is subverts the type system, and would likely have worse performance than a specialized type-specific implementation. Using a uniform representation of the data structure for all types, and casting to/from void pointers, so far as I can see, necessitates an indirection that would be avoided by an implementation specialized for the element type. Option 2 doesn't require any extra tools, but it feels somewhat clunky, and could give bad compiler errors when used improperly. Option 3 could give better compiler error messages than option 2, as the specialized data structure code would reside in expanded form that could be opened in an editor and inspected by the programmer (as opposed to code generated by preprocessor macros). However, this option is the most heavyweight, a sort of "poor-man's templates". I have used this approach before, using a simple sed script to specialize a "templated" version of some C code. I would like to program my future "low-level" projects in C rather than C++, but have been frightened by the thought of rewriting common data structures for each specific type. What experience do people have with this issue? Are there good libraries of generic data structures and algorithms in C that do not go with Option 1 (i.e. casting to and from void pointers, which sacrifices type safety and adds a level of indirection)?
