  • ASP.NET MVC 2 Released

    I’m happy to announce that the final release of ASP.NET MVC 2 is now available for VS 2008/Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with ASP.NET 3.5.  You can download and install it from the following locations: Download ASP.NET MVC 2 using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer Download ASP.NET MVC 2 from the Download Center The final release of VS 2010 and Visual Web Developer 2010 will have ASP.NET MVC 2 built-in – so you won’t need an additional install in order to use ASP.NET MVC 2 with them.  ASP.NET MVC 2 We shipped ASP.NET MVC 1 a little less than a year ago.  Since then, almost 1 million developers have downloaded and used the final release, and its popularity has steadily grown month over month. ASP.NET MVC 2 is the next significant update of ASP.NET MVC. It is a compatible update to ASP.NET MVC 1 – so all the knowledge, skills, code, and extensions you already have with ASP.NET MVC continue to work and apply going forward. Like the first release, we are also shipping the source code for ASP.NET MVC 2 under an OSI-compliant open-source license. ASP.NET MVC 2 can be installed side-by-side with ASP.NET MVC 1 (meaning you can have some apps built with V1 and others built with V2 on the same machine).  We have instructions on how to update your existing ASP.NET MVC 1 apps to use ASP.NET MVC 2 using VS 2008 here.  Note that VS 2010 has an automated upgrade wizard that can automatically migrate your existing ASP.NET MVC 1 applications to ASP.NET MVC 2 for you.   • Entity Framework Code-First to Provide Replacement for ASP.NET Profile Provider

    A while back, I coordinated a project to add support for the SQL Table Profile Provider in ASP.NET 4 Web Applications.  We urged Microsoft to improve ASP.NET’s built-in Profile support so our workaround wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, Microsoft plans to provide a replacement for ASP.NET Profile in a forthcoming release. In response to my feature suggestion on Connect, Microsoft says we should look for something even better using Entity Framework: “When code-first is officially released the final piece of a full replacement of the ASP.NET Profile will have arrived. Once code-first for EF4 is released, developers will have a really easy and very approachable way to create any arbitrary class, and automatically have the .NET Framework create a table to provide storage for that class. Furthermore developer will also have full LINQ-query capabilities against code-first classes. “ The downside is that there won’t be a way to retrofit this Profile replacement to pre- ASP.NET 4 Web applications. At least there’ll still be the MVP workaround code. It looks like it’s time for me to dig into a CTP of EF Code-First to see what’s available.   Scott Guthrie has been blogging about Code-First Development with Entity Framework 4. It’s not clear when the EF Code-First is coming, but my guess is that it’ll be part of the VS 2010/.NET 4 service pack.

  • Fix: Orchard Error ‘The controller for path '/OrchardLocal/' was not found or does not implement IController.

    Suddenly, in a local Orchard 1.6 project, I started getting this error in ShellRoute.cs: The controller for path '/OrchardLocal/' was not found or does not implement IController. Obviously I had changed something, but the error wasn’t helping much.  After losing far too much time, I copied over the original Orchard source code and was back in business. Shortly thereafter, I further flattened my forehead by applying a sudden, solid blow with the lower portion of my palm! You see, in testing the importing of comments via blogML, I had set the added blog as the Orchard site’s Start page. Then, I deleted the blog so I could test another import batch. The upshot was that by deleting the blog, Orchard no longer had a default (home) page at the root of the site. The site’s default content was missing. The fix was to go to the Admin subdirectory (http://localhost:30320/OrchardLocal/admin) . add a new page, and check Set as homepage. Once again, the problem was between the keyboard and the chair. I hope this helps someone else. Ken

    Hey hey hey…Microsoft Office was released today on MSDN! What I’m posting here is not intended as a complaint. The updates to Office are awesome! I did however run into a few problems upgrading today. First of all, if you going to install the 64bit Office 2010 please note that you can’t install the 64bit Office 2010 if you are trying to install on a machine that is running 32bit Office 2007.   • Login to Windows 8 Desktop Mode Automatically with ClassicStarter [Downloads]

    The other day we shared a quick keyboard tip for going straight to Desktop Mode in Windows 8 when you logged in. Today we are back with a small app that gets you straight to Desktop Mode with ‘set it and forget it’ ease. You will need to install ClassicStarter after you have extracted the contents of the zip file. Once that is done simply start the app up and this is what you will see… The only thing you will need to do is click on the Classic Desktop Button. Once you have clicked on the Classic Desktop Button it will ‘grey out’. Simply exit the app, log out, and then log back into your system. The Start Screen will display for a moment or two, but everything will shift over to Desktop Mode automatically without any additional actions required on your part. To reverse the process and set the Start Screen as the default just start the app up again and click on the Metro Desktop Button, exit the app, and then log out/log back in.     Over the last few days Windows Live Mail stopped fetching my Hotmail. I assumed it was a problem with Microsoft’s NNTP Web service, so I went back to using the browser to check my Hotmail. Well, it didn’t right itself, so I started probing and discovered the fix… no default connection. To repair it: From the Tools menu, click Accounts.   • Download and Try Out the New ‘Australis UI’ Test-Build of Firefox for Windows

    We have all been hearing about the upcoming changes to the UI in Firefox and now the first test build is finally available to try out. Mozilla software engineer Jared Wein has worked hard and put together an unofficial (at the moment) Australis UI build that you can download as a regular installer or as a portable in zip file format. Here is a closer look at the new tab setup in the Australis build. Notice that only the focused tab is non-transparent while the non-active tabs blend nicely into the background. Special Note: Our screenshots were taken in Windows 8, thus the slightly different looking (non-rounded) corners on the app window.   • Password Security: Short and Complex versus ‘Short or Lengthy’ and Less Complex

    Creating secure passwords for our online accounts is a necessary evil due to the huge increase in database and account hacking that occurs these days. The problem though is that no two companies have a similar policy for complex and secure password creation, then factor in the continued creation of insecure passwords or multi-site use of the same password and trouble is just waiting to happen. Ars Technica decided to take a look at multiple password types, how users fared with them, and how well those password types held up to cracking attempts in their latest study. The password types that Ars Technica looked at were comprehensive8, basic8, and basic16. The comprehensive type required a variety of upper-case, lower-case, digits, and symbols with no dictionary words allowed. The only restriction on the two basic types was the number of characters used. Which type do you think was easier for users to adopt and did better in the two password cracking tests?
