• is it possible to achieve an image clipping/masking effect with html + css3?

  Hi - I'm trying to place a nice border around an image that's 250x250, using only html and css. The markup is this: <div id="img-container"><img src="pic.jpg" border="0"/></div> And the css is: #img-container { height: 225px; width: 225px; padding: 3px; border: 1px solid black; z-index: 10; position: relative; overflow: hidden; border-radius: 10px; } #img-container img { z-index: 5; } Basically, I want the div container to clip the picture's edges that exceed its boundaries. This will achieve the rounded edges effect using the border-radius property (-moz-border-radius, -webkit-border-radius, etc) - if it actually works or could even be done. Looking for tips and tricks on this. Thanks. And, yes, I'm obviously not a web designer :)

  When creating an WPF application with the MVVM pattern, it seems I have to gather the necessary tools myself to even begin the most rudimentary event handling, e.g. AttachedBehaviors I get from here DelegateCommands I get from here Now I'm looking for some way to handle the ItemSelected event in a ComboBox and am getting suggestions of tricks and workarounds to do this (using a XAML trigger or have other elements bound to the selected item, etc.). Ok, I can go down this road, but it seems to be reinventing the wheel. It would be nice to just have an ItemSelected command that I can handle in my ViewModel. Am I missing some set of standard tools or is everyone doing MVVM with WPF basically building and putting together their own collection of tools just so they can do the simplest plumbing tasks with events and commands, things that take only a couple lines in code-behind with a Click="eventHandler"?

• Image 8-connectivity without excessive branching?

  I'm writing a low level image processing algorithm which needs to do alot of 8-connectivity checks for pixels. For every pixel I often need to check the pixels above it, below it and on its sides and diagonals. On the edges of the image there are special cases where there are only 5 or 3 neighbors instead of 8 neighbors for a pixels. The naive way to do it is for every access to check if the coordinates are in the right range and if not, return some default value. I'm looking for a way to avoid all these checks since they introduce a large overhead to the algorithm. Are there any tricks to avoid it altogether?

• JPEG image with alpha channel on website

  I would like to make a JPEG image file with some pixels that are partially transparent or fully transparent, similar to a PNG file with an alpha channel. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about doing this? I would like to use the image on a website. If I try to do this, would it work in any or all of the popular browsers (IE 7+, Firefox, Safari)? Assuming it is possible, will it just work, or are there any tricks or hacks required to make it work?

  Hi, I am new to php and trying out this tutorial at : http://css-tricks.com/php-for-beginners-building-your-first-simple-cms/ Unfortunately I am getting the following error and can't seem to track down the reason: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PUBLIC in ../simpleCMS.php on line 56 My code for simpleCMS.php is as is in the tutorial link above. FYI, my line 56 is the following line of code in simpleCMS.php public function display_admin() { Above this line is public function display_public() Can anyone possibly see what I could be doing wrong and again, my code is the same code from the tutorial website and have downloaded the files that came with it? Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Furthermore, I am using Mac OS X MAMP to run my Apache/MySQL Server locally. My other question is, when I using the following command: mysql_connect($this->host,$this->username,$this->password) is my hostname 'localhost' alone or do I also have to include port alongside the localhost? • How to build sqlite for Python 2.4?

  I would like to use pysqlite interface between Python and sdlite database. I have already Python and SQLite on my computer. But I have troubles with installation of pysqlite. During the installation I get the following error message: error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1 As far as I understood the problems appears because version of my Python is 2.4.3 and SQLite is integrated in Python since 2.5. However, I also found out that it IS possible to build sqlite for Python 2.4 (using some tricks, probably). Does anybody know how to build sqlite for Python 2.4? As another option I could try to install higher version of Python. However I do not have root privileges. Does anybody know what will be the easiest way to solve the problem (build SQLite fro Python 2.4, or install newer version of Python)? I have to mention that I would not like to overwrite the old version version of Python. Thank you in advance.

• Setting up DomainKeys/DKIM in a PHP-based SMTP client

  It looks like there are some great libraries out there to do DomainKeys signing of emails on C#/.NET, but I'm having a really hard time finding the same kind of support for PHP. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place? The only one I found is http://php-dkim.sourceforge.net/; it looks incredibly hacky and supports PHP4 only. Considering how popular PHP is, and how critical DomainKeys are for email classification as non-spam, I'd expect better tools; do you know of any? Any other tricks you'd recommend?

• Looking for an alternative to cfdump

  I think I just realized how restrictive my web host is when they wouldn't let me use cfdump. This actually kind of angers me, cause really, what harm is dump going to do? Anyway my question is has anyone written a cfdump alternative that will kick out complex types of data or can link me to a site with a code example? Can't really used cfc's or udfs either cause guess what, they're blocked too. Anyway looking for something simple that I can just paste in my cfml and I will be happy. It's sad that I used to be able to do this, but have forgotten a lot of that skillset since I moved into Flex and AS. oh and they're using cf7, so no cf8 or 9 tricks ;-) Thanks in advance.

  Sometimes I want to build Python or GCC from scratch just for fun, but I can't parse the errors I get, or don't understand statements like "libtool link error # XYZ". What are some tricks that unix/systems gurus use to compile software of this size from scratch? Of course I already do things like read config.log (if there is one), google around, and post in newsgroups. I'm looking for things that either make the process go smoother or get me more information about the error to help me understand and fix it. • Are C++ meta-templates required knowledge for programmers?

  In my experience Meta-templates are really fun (when your compilers are compliant), and can give good performance boosts, and luckily I'm surrounded by seasoned C++ programmers that also grok meta-templates, however occasionally a new developer arrives and can't make heads or tails of some of the meta-template tricks we use (mostly Andrei Alenxandrescu stuff), for a few weeks until he gets initiated appropriately. • How do quickly search through a .csv file in Python

  I'm reading a 6 million entry .csv file with Python, and I want to be able to search through this file for a particular entry. Are there any tricks to search the entire file? Should you read the whole thing into a dictionary or should you perform a search every time? I tried loading it into a dictionary but that took ages so I'm currently searching through the whole file every time which seems wasteful. Could I possibly utilize that the list is alphabetically ordered? (e.g. if the search word starts with "b" I only search from the line that includes the first word beginning with "b" to the line that includes the last word beginning with "b") I'm using import csv. (a side question: it is possible to make csv go to a specific line in the file? I want to make the program start at a random line) Edit: I already have a copy of the list as an .sql file as well, how could I implement that into Python?

• Clever ways to better test GPS code using only the iPhone simulator?

  I've been playing around with the iPhone SDK, using MapKit and Core Location. What are some of the tricks you can use to better test things... while still on the simulator (long before I have to try it out on my iPhone). Is there a way to use NSTimer and regularly get 'pretend' values for location, heading, speed, etc? The simulator only giving 1 location... and no movement... really limits its 'testing' usefulness.

Here are the classes (abstract example): Employee { ID; Name; Roles[]; //What Employee can do } Order { Price; Employee Manager; Employee Executive; //Maybe wrong english. The person which perform order } Employee can be Manager and Executive in the order at the same time. This means that Employee role is not fixed. I have to group orders by employees and finally get IGrouping with Employee key. So .GroupBy(el=new {el.Manager,el.Executive}) is not allowed. I considered some tricks with IEqualityComparable, but found no solution. If somrbody will help I'll be vary glad, thank you.

• Problem authenticating with shiro in grails app

  I have a grails 1.2 app and I want to use declarative security in order to restrict accesses based on roles. I decided to try shiro, installed the plugin, but when I try to authenticate, the message "Invalid username and/or password" shows up in the header. I check the db entry and the user is there with the sha'ed password. No messages are shown neither in the console nor in the stacktrace file. I added "warn 'org.jsecurity'" to Config.groovy with no results. Any hints/tricks to troubleshoot this ?

  Hi, i have a question, after allot of hours in googling and reading articles, i understood that namespace extenssion in windows is quite tricky (In C++ at least), now i've also seen its possible to do so in C# , but microsft does'nt officaly confirms using .net for namespace extensions... though i have seen very nice commercial Namespace Extenssion framework , but none is free.... so to my question :) , i want to develop my own Namespace Extenssion ,i have C++/C# knwoledge and basic COM/ATL , but if it can be done i prefer c#, so does c# inteop can fully do the work without too many tricks ? or one shall go diving in the ATL to create the neccessary COM objects... and another question , can i program to Windows O/S with C# anything that can be done in C++/ATL/MFC ? thanks!

  I have recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010. I have kept database projects separate to application projects. The database project was converted from and old DPR project and added a whole lot of additional folder. I deleted those, but now I suspect I need to recreate the project as these new projects work very differently. Now that I have need to update scripts, it seems I can even paste new SQL files into the project so am a bit stuck.   I'm after a simple solution to work in all browsers. For specific file types, or targeted links via a class: how can I get them to simply force download in all major browsers. • Creating an Excel file using .NET (C#) - Problems with columns headers!

  Hello, I want to create & fill a .xls file using ADO.NET or LINQ, but I do not want to have the columns names in the first row. I just want to insert rows starting in row no. 1. I know I have to insert colums first, but... is there a way to 'hide' those columns headers? The problem is that, in first row of my spreadsheet, I must have only two values (one in A1 and the other in B1), but in the remaining rows I'll be inserting more than just two values (maximum 15 columns). I'm open to suggestions/hacks/tricks even if that's not the best way of doing this. Thanks!
