  • Problem creating calculations 'engine' in two class java calculator

    - by tokee
    i have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to create a two class java calculator but have been unsuccessful so far in getting it working. i have the code for an interface which works and displays ok but creating a seperate class 'CalcEngine' to do the actual calculations has proven to be beyond me. I'd appreciate it if someone could kick start things for me and create a class calcEngine which works with the interface class and allows input when from single button i.e. if one is pressed on the calc then 1 displays onscreen. please note i'm not asking someone to do the whole thing for me as i want to learn and i'm confident i can do the rest including addition subtraction etc. once i get over the obstacle of getting the two classes to communicate. any and all assistance would be very much appreciated. Please see the calcInterface class code below - import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.*; import javax.swing.border.*; import java.awt.event.*; /** *A Class that operates as the framework for a calculator. *No calculations are performed in this section */ public class CalcFrame implements ActionListener { private CalcEngine calc; private JFrame frame; private JTextField display; private JLabel status; /** * Constructor for objects of class GridLayoutExample */ public CalcFrame() { makeFrame(); //calc = engine; } /** * This allows you to quit the calculator. */ // Alows the class to quit. private void quit() { System.exit(0); } // Calls the dialog frame with the information about the project. private void showAbout() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "Group Project", "About Calculator Group Project", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE); } private void makeFrame() { frame = new JFrame("Group Project Calculator"); makeMenuBar(frame); JPanel contentPane = (JPanel)frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout(8, 8)); contentPane.setBorder(new EmptyBorder( 10, 10, 10, 10)); /** * Insert a text field */ display = new JTextField(); contentPane.add(display, BorderLayout.NORTH); //Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new GridLayout(4, 4)); JPanel buttonPanel = new JPanel(new GridLayout(4, 4)); contentPane.add(new JButton("1")); contentPane.add(new JButton("2")); contentPane.add(new JButton("3")); contentPane.add(new JButton("4")); contentPane.add(new JButton("5")); contentPane.add(new JButton("6")); contentPane.add(new JButton("7")); contentPane.add(new JButton("8")); contentPane.add(new JButton("9")); contentPane.add(new JButton("0")); contentPane.add(new JButton("+")); contentPane.add(new JButton("-")); contentPane.add(new JButton("/")); contentPane.add(new JButton("*")); contentPane.add(new JButton("=")); contentPane.add(new JButton("C")); contentPane.add(buttonPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); //status = new JLabel(calc.getAuthor()); //contentPane.add(status, BorderLayout.SOUTH); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } /** * Create the main frame's menu bar. * The frame that the menu bar should be added to. */ private void makeMenuBar(JFrame frame) { final int SHORTCUT_MASK = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(); JMenuBar menubar = new JMenuBar(); frame.setJMenuBar(menubar); JMenu menu; JMenuItem item; // create the File menu menu = new JMenu("File"); menubar.add(menu); // create the Quit menu with a shortcut "Q" key. item = new JMenuItem("Quit"); item.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_Q, SHORTCUT_MASK)); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { quit(); } }); menu.add(item); // Adds an about menu. menu = new JMenu("About"); menubar.add(menu); // Displays item = new JMenuItem("Calculator Project"); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { showAbout(); } }); menu.add(item); } /** * An interface action has been performed. * Find out what it was and handle it. * @param event The event that has occured. */ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event) { String command = event.getActionCommand(); if(command.equals("0") || command.equals("1") || command.equals("2") || command.equals("3") || command.equals("4") || command.equals("5") || command.equals("6") || command.equals("7") || command.equals("8") || command.equals("9")) { int number = Integer.parseInt(command); calc.numberPressed(number); } else if(command.equals("+")) { calc.plus(); } else if(command.equals("-")) { calc.minus(); } else if(command.equals("=")) { calc.equals(); } else if(command.equals("C")) { calc.clear(); } else if(command.equals("?")) { } // else unknown command. redisplay(); } /** * Update the interface display to show the current value of the * calculator. */ private void redisplay() { display.setText("" + calc.getDisplayValue()); } /** * Toggle the info display in the calculator's status area between the * author and version information. */ }

  • Java Developer Days India Trip Report

    - by reza_rahman
    You are probably aware of Oracle's decision to discontinue the relatively resource intensive regional JavaOnes in favor of more Java Developer Days, virtual events and deeper involvement with independent conferences. In comparison to the regional JavaOnes, Java Developer Days are smaller, shorter (typically one full day), more focused (mostly Oracle speakers/topics) and more local (targeting cities). For those who have been around the Java ecosystem for a few years, they are basically the current incarnation of the highly popular and developer centric Sun Tech Days. October 21st through October 25th I spoke at Java Developer Days India. This was basically three separate but identical events in the cities of Pune (October 21st), Chennai (October 24th) and Bangalore (October 25th). For those with some familiarity with India, other than Hyderabad these cities are India's IT powerhouses. The events were basically focused on Java EE. I delivered five of the sessions (yes, you read that right), while my friend NetBeans Group Product Manager Ashwin Rao delivered three talks. Jagadish Ramu from the GlassFish team India helped me out in Bangalore by delivering two sessions. It was also a pleasure to introduce my co-contributor to the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints project Vijay Nair at Bangalore during the opening talk. I thought it was a great dynamic between Ashwin and I flipping between talking about the new features and demoing live code in NetBeans. The following were my sessions (source PDF and abstracts posted as usual on my SlideShare account): JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond Building Java HTML5/WebSocket Applications with JSR 356 What’s New in Java Message Service 2 JAX-RS 2: New and Noteworthy in the RESTful Web Services API Using NoSQL with JPA, EclipseLink and Java EE The event went well and was packed in all three cities. The Q&A was great and Indian developers were particularly generous with kind words :-). It seemed the event and our presence was appreciated in the truest sense which I must say is a rarity. The events were exhausting but very rewarding at the same time. As hectic as the three city trip was I tried to see at least some of the major sights (mostly at night) since this was my very first time to India. I think the slideshow below is a good representation of the riddle wrapped up in an enigma that is India (and the rest of the Indian sub-continent for that matter): Ironically enough what struck me the most during this trip is the woman pictured below - Shushma. My chauffeur, tour guide and friend for a day, she fluidly navigated the madness that is Mumbai traffic with skills that would make Evel Knievel blush while simultaneously pointing out sights and prompting me to take pictures (Mumbai was my stopover and gateway to/from India). In some ways she is probably the most potent symbol of the new India. When we parted ways I told her she should take solace in the fact she has won mostly without a fight a potentially hazardous battle her sisters across the Arabian sea are still fighting. I'm not sure she entirely understood the significance of what I told her. I hope that she did. I also had occasion to take a pretty cool local bus ride from Chennai to Bangalore instead of yet another boring flight. All in all I really enjoyed the trip to India and hope to return again soon. Jai Hind :-)!

  • Talking JavaOne with Rock Star Adam Bien

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    Among the most celebrated developers in recent years, especially in the domain of Java EE and JavaFX, is consultant Adam Bien, who, in addition to being a JavaOne Rock Star for Java EE sessions given in 2009 and 20011, is a Java Champion, the winner of Oracle Magazine’s 2011 Top Java Developer of the Year Award, and recently won a 2012 JAX Innovation Award as a top Java Ambassador. Bien will be presenting the following sessions: TUT3907 - Java EE 6/7: The Lean Parts CON3906 - Stress-Testing Java EE 6 Applications Without Stress CON3908 - Building Serious JavaFX 2 Applications CON3896 - Interactive Onstage Java EE Overengineering I spoke with Bien to get his take on Java today. He expressed excitement that the smallest companies and startups are showing increasing interest in Java EE. “This is a very good sign,” said Bien. “Only a few years ago J2EE was mostly used by larger companies -- now it becomes interesting even for one-person shows. Enterprise Java events are also extremely popular. On the Java SE side, I'm really excited about Project Nashorn.” Nashorn is an upcoming JavaScript engine, developed fully in Java by Oracle, and based on the Da Vinci Machine (JSR 292) which is expected to be available for Java 8.   Bien expressed concern about a common misconception regarding Java's mediocre productivity. “The problem is not Java,” explained Bien, “but rather systems built with ancient patterns and approaches. Sometimes it really is ‘Cargo Cult Programming.’ Java SE/EE can be incredibly productive and lean without the unnecessary and hard-to-maintain bloat. The real problems are ‘Ivory Towers’ and not Java’s lack of productivity.” Bien remarked that if there is one thing he wanted Java developers to understand it is that, "Premature optimization is the root of all evil. Or at least of some evil. Modern JVMs and application servers are hard to optimize upfront. It is far easier to write simple code and measure the results continuously. Identify the hotspots first, then optimize.” He advised Java EE developers to, “Rethink everything you know about Enterprise Java. Before you implement anything, ask the question: ‘Why?’ If there is no clear answer -- just don't do it. Most well known best practices are outdated. Focus your efforts on the domain problem and not the technology.” Looking ahead, Bien said, “I would like to see open source application servers running directly on a hypervisor. Packaging the whole runtime in a single file would significantly simplify the deployment and operations.”Check out a recent Java Magazine interview with Bien about his Java EE 6 stress monitoring tool here. • Need some help on how to replay the last game of a java maze game

    - by Marty
    Hello, I am working on creating a Java maze game for a project. The maze is displayed on the console as standard output not in an applet. I have created most of hte code I need, however I am stuck at one problem and that is I need a user to be able to replay the last game i.e redraw the maze with the users moves but without any input from the user. I am not sure on what course of action to take, i was thinking about copying each users move or the position of each move into another array, as you can see i have 2 variables which hold the position of the player, plyrX and plyrY do you think copying these values into a new array after each move would solve my problem and how would i go about this? I have updated my code, apologies about the textIO.java class not being present, not sure how to resolve that exept post a link to TextIO.java [TextIO.java][1] My code below is updated with a new array of type char to hold values from the original maze (read in from text file and displayed using unicode characters) and also to new variables c_plyrX and c_plyrY which I am thinking should hold the values of plyrX and plyrY and copy them into the new array. When I try to call the replayGame(); method from the menu the maze loads for a second then the console exits so im not sure what I am doing wrong Thanks public class MazeGame { //unicode characters that will define the maze walls, //pathways, and in game characters. final static char WALL = '\u2588'; //wall final static char PATH = '\u2591'; //pathway final static char PLAYER = '\u25EF'; //player final static char ENTRANCE = 'E'; //entrance final static char EXIT = '\u2716'; //exit //declaring member variables which will hold the maze co-ordinates //X = rows, Y = columns static int entX = 0; //entrance X co-ordinate static int entY = 1; //entrance y co-ordinate static int plyrX = 0; static int plyrY = 1; static int exitX = 24; //exit X co-ordinate static int exitY = 37; //exit Y co-ordinate //static member variables which hold maze values //used so values can be accessed from different methods static int rows; //rows variable static int cols; //columns variable static char[][] maze; //defines 2 dimensional array to hold the maze //variables that hold player movement values static char dir; //direction static int spaces; //amount of spaces user can travel //variable to hold amount of moves the user has taken; static int movesTaken = 0; //new array to hold player moves for replaying game static char[][] mazeCopy; static int c_plyrX; static int c_plyrY; /** userMenu method for displaying the user menu which will provide various options for * the user to choose such as play a maze game, get instructions, etc. */ public static void userMenu(){ TextIO.putln("Maze Game"); TextIO.putln("*********"); TextIO.putln("Choose an option."); TextIO.putln(""); TextIO.putln("1. • Spring Security Issue: Controller, Anonymous Requests...

    - by Srirangan
    Hey guys, I have an app that uses Spring security and BlazeDS. Flex 3.2 is used for the client app. Generally client app makes service calls using RemoteObjects. However, for certain cases client app is sending a request to a URL. We're using Annotated Controllers for URL mapping. Here's where the "Access is denied" exception comes up: 2010-04-12 11:43:23,486 [qtp5138683-16] ERROR fr.plasticomnium.gpoc.utils.ServiceExceptionInterceptor - Unexpected RuntimeException : Access is denied org.springframework.security.access.AccessDeniedException: Access is denied at org.springframework.security.access.vote.AffirmativeBased.decide(AffirmativeBased.java:71) at org.springframework.security.access.intercept.AbstractSecurityInterceptor.beforeInvocation(AbstractSecurityInterceptor.java:203) at org.springframework.security.access.intercept.aopalliance.MethodSecurityInterceptor.invoke(MethodSecurityInterceptor.java:64) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:172) at fr.plasticomnium.gpoc.utils.ServiceExceptionInterceptor.invoke(ServiceExceptionInterceptor.java:15) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:172) at org.springframework.transaction.interceptor.TransactionInterceptor.invoke(TransactionInterceptor.java:110) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:172) at org.springframework.aop.interceptor.ExposeInvocationInterceptor.invoke(ExposeInvocationInterceptor.java:89) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:172) at org.springframework.aop.framework.JdkDynamicAopProxy.invoke(JdkDynamicAopProxy.java:202) ... ...

  • Having an issue with Onejar-Maven-Plugin

  • connecting clients to server with emulator on different computers

    - by prolink007
    I am writing an application that communicates using sockets. I have a server running on one android emulator on a computer, then i have 2 other clients running on android emulators on 2 other computers. I am trying to get the 2 clients to connect to the server. This works when i run the server and clients on the same computer, but when i attempt to do this on the same wifi network and on separate computers it gives me the following error. The client and server code is posted below. A lot is stripped out just to show the important stuff. Also, after the server starts i telnet into the server and run these commands redir add tcp:5000:6000 (i have also tried without doing the redir but it still says the same thing). Then i start the clients and get the error. Thanks for the help! Both the 5000 port and 6000 port are open on my router. And i have windows firewall disabled on the computer hosting the server. 11-27 18:54:02.274: W/ActivityManager(60): Activity idle timeout for HistoryRecord{44cf0a30 school.cpe434.ClassAidClient/school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity} 11-27 18:57:02.424: W/System.err(205): java.net.SocketException: The operation timed out 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connectSocketImpl(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connect(OSNetworkSystem.java:114) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:245) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:220) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.startupSocket(Socket.java:780) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.<init>(Socket.java:314) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity.onCreate(ClassAidClient4Activity.java:102) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.Instrumentation.callActivityOnCreate(Instrumentation.java:1047) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2459) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2512) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1863) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) The server code public class ClassAidServer4Activity extends Activity { ServerSocket ss = null; String mClientMsg = ""; String mClientExtraMsg = ""; Thread myCommsThread = null; public static final int SERVERPORT = 6000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1); tv.setText("Nothing from client yet"); this.myCommsThread = new Thread(new CommsThread()); this.myCommsThread.start(); } class CommsThread implements Runnable { public void run() { // Socket s = null; try { ss = new ServerSocket(SERVERPORT ); } catch (IOException e1) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } while(true) { try { Socket socket = ss.accept(); connectedDeviceCount++; Thread lThread = new Thread(new ListeningThread(socket)); lThread.start(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } class ListeningThread implements Runnable { private Socket s = null; public ListeningThread(Socket socket) { // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub this.s = socket; } @Override public void run() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub while (!Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted()) { Message m = new Message(); // m.what = QUESTION_ID; try { if (s == null) s = ss.accept(); BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(s.getInputStream())); String st = null; st = input.readLine(); String[] temp = parseReadMessage(st); mClientMsg = temp[1]; if(temp.length > 2) { mClientExtraMsg = temp[2]; } m.what = Integer.parseInt(temp[0]); myUpdateHandler.sendMessage(m); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } } The client code public class ClassAidClient4Activity extends Activity { //telnet localhost 5554 //redir add tcp:5000:6000 private Socket socket; private String serverIpAddress = "192.168.1.102"; private static final int REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT = 5000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(serverIpAddress); socket = new Socket(serverAddr, REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT); } catch (UnknownHostException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("UnknownHostException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("IOException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } } }

  • Java: How to get Unicode name of a character (or its type category)?

    - by java.is.for.desktop
    Hello, everyone! The Character class in Java defines methods which check a given char argument for equality with certain Unicode chars or for belonging to some type category. These chars and type categories are named. As stated in given javadoc, examples for named chars are HORIZONTAL TABULATION, FORM FEED, ...; example for named type categories are SPACE_SEPARATOR, PARAGRAPH_SEPARATOR, ... However, being byte or int values instead of enums, the name of these types are "hidden" at runtime. So, is there a possibility to get characters' and/or type categories' names at runtime?

  • Java Champion Dick Wall Explores the Virtues of Scala (otn interview)

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    In a new interview up on otn/java, titled “Java Champion Dick Wall on the Virtues of Scala (Part 2),” Dick Wall explains why, after a long career in programming exploring Lisp, C, C++, Python, and Java, he has finally settled on Scala as his language of choice. From the interview: “I was always on the lookout for a language that would give me both Python-like productivity and simplicity for just writing something and quickly having it work and that also offers strong performance, toolability, and type safety (all of which I like in Java). Scala is simply the first language that offers all those features in a package that suits me. Programming in Scala feels like programming in Python (if you can think it, you can do it), but with the benefit of having a compiler looking over your shoulder and telling you that you have the wrong type here or the wrong method name there.The final ‘aha!’ moment came about a year and a half ago. I had a quick task to complete, and I started writing it in Python (as I have for many years) but then realized that I could probably write it just as fast in Scala. I tried, and indeed I managed to write it just about as fast.”Wall makes the remarkable claim that once Java developers have learned to work in Scala, when they work on large projects, they typically find themselves more productive than they are in Java. “Of course,” he points out, “people are always going to argue about these claims, but I can put my hand over my heart and say that I am much more productive in Scala than I was in Java, and I see no reason why the many people I know using Scala wouldn’t say the same without some reason.”Read the interview here.

  • Notification framework for java

    - by rmarimon
    I'm in the process of developing a web application (java + jsp) that can send notifications to users. The user can subscribe to multiple events generated by the application and can choose to receive the messages associated with those events via multiple channels (email, sms, growl?, messenger); perhaps different messages through different channels; perhaps a daily message digest. Everything must be configurable by the user. Is there some framework that deals with this?

  • Automating HP Quality Center with Python or Java

    Hi, We have a project that uses HP Quality Center and one of the regular issues we face is people not updating comments on the defect. So I was thinkingif we could come up with a small script or tool that could be used to periodically throw up a reminder and force the user to update the comments. I came across the Open Test Architecture API and was wondering if there are any good Python or java examples for the same that I could see. Thanks Hari

  • java 7 upgrade and hibernate annotation processor error

    - by Bill Turner
    I am getting the following warning, which seems to be triggering a subsequent warning and an error. I have been googling like mad, though have not found anything that makes it clear what it is I should do to resolve this. This issue occurs when I execute an Ant build. I am trying to migrate our project to Java 7. I have changed all the source='1.6' and target="1.6" to 1.7. I did find this related article: Forward compatible Java 6 annotation processor and SupportedSourceVersion It seems to indicate that I should build the Hibernate annotation processor jar myself, compiling it with with 1.7. It does not seem I should be required to do so. The latest version of the class in question (in hibernate-validator-annotation-processor-5.0.1.Final.jar) has been compiled with 1.6. Since the code in said class refers to SourceVersion.latestSupported(), and the 1.6 of that returns only RELEASE_6, there does not seem to be a generally available solution. Here is the warning: [javac] warning: Supported source version 'RELEASE_6' from annotation processor 'org.hibernate.validator.ap.ConstraintValidationProcessor' less than -source '1.7' And, here are the subsequent warnings/error. • Java: JPQL date function to add a time period to another date

    - by bguiz
    SELECT x FROM SomeClass WHERE x.dateAtt BETWEEN CURRENT_DATE AND (CURRENT_DATE + 1 MONTH) In the above JPQL statement, SomeClass has a memebr dateAttr, which is a java.util.Date and has a @Temporal(javax.persistence.TemporalType.DATE) annotation. I need a way to do the (CURRENT_DATE + 1 MONTH) bit - it is obviously wrong in its current state - but cannot find the doc with the date function for JPQL. Can anyone point me in the direction of a doc that documents JPQL date functions (and also how to do this particular query)?
