• Azure Service Bus - Authorization failure

  I fell into this trap earlier in the week with a mistake I made when configuring a service to send and listen on the azure service bus and I thought it would be worth a little note for future reference as I didnt find anything online about it.  After configuring everything when I ran my code sample I was getting the below error. WebHost failed to process a request.Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/28316044Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/-------/BrokeredMessageService.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation.  The exception message is: Generic: There was an authorization failure. • rc.exe from windows sdk missing

  While doing some cleaning and reinstalling on my machine, I obviously cleaned one too many, and now I'm missing a rc.exe that's supposed to go either in my Visual Studio directory (not sure which one) or in my Microsoft SDKs directory. The problem is that I don't want to reinstall the whole OS again, and that rc.exe is part of some SDK freely downloadable from Microsoft (apparently 6.0a version). I can't find it nevertheless. Anyone knows what rc.exe is part of, and what I need to download (and from where) to get it back ?

• Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

  I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

• How to add in in appendix page numbers separately from the regular heading page numbers

  I had regular page numbers on my Microsoft Word 2007 document at the bottom center of my page, starting from 1 from Insert tab Page Number Bottom of page Plain Number 2. I added an appendix with Heading 6 and followed the instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290953 to create separate page numbers just for the appendix, i.e. A-1, A-2, B-1, B-2, etc. The Page Number Format configuration I did is here: ]When I try to set this however, it changes all of the page numbers to this format, even the ones that aren't from heading 6 (meaning it changes the non-appendix content to this page number format). Here's another example: 1 Heading1 has page number A-4 (note it starts at A-1 at the title page) ... Appendix A has page number A-12 I would like to change it so that 1 Heading1 has page number 4 (note it starts at 1 at the title page) ... Appendix A has page number A-1 Anyone know why this is happening? Thank you!!

  I do a lot of sketching with my pen-tablet. I use Microsoft Paint in Windows 7, and it is just perfect except for bad anti-aliasing. I found some videos of Salman Khan, where his sketching is really smooth and anti-aliased. Do you know what program he might use? • 255 Character limit on VLOOKUP

  Using excel 2003, the formula: =VLOOKUP(D1 ,A1:B135, 2) fails if the length of D1 exceeds 255 characters (i.e. the list has some text longer then 255 characters, D1 has the same text value, and VLOOKUP returns #VALUE!). MATCH seems to suffer from the same character limit. I cannot find any official confirmation of these limits, for example here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/vlookup-HP005209335.aspx or here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/excel-specifications-and-limits-HP005199291.aspx?CTT=3 I know that excel has a 255 limit on the length of text used in formulae, but it suggests connate should work (it does not in this case, and I am not using strings in the formula, but referencing another cell). Can somebody confirm that these limit exist (it is always possible I am doing something else wrong)? More importantly, does anyone know of a way around them? Thanks

  We will be implementing a public-facing website in SharePoint 2010 and I have a few questions regarding licensing: Is there any (relatively) reliable pricing information available for SharePoint 2010? What about rumors? What edition of SharePoint 2010 would be appropriate for a publicly facing website (in 2007, you needed Enterprise for this, but it seems that WCM functionality is included in Standard in 2010)? What would be a reasonable number to budget for SharePoint 2010 licensing for a publicly facing website? Note: I have tried asking Microsoft directly. Unless you are a volume license customer, they direct you to a reseller (like CDW). Unfortunately, none of the resellers have the pricing for 2010 yet. The sku isn't even in their system. I was able to get in touch with the Microsoft Pre-Sales team and they confirmed that the price list will for 2010 will be published on May 3rd (or thereabouts), but they weren't able to give me a price. • Contending with Smartart cropping bug in Word 2007

  I recently discovered and started using the Smartart tool in Microsoft Word 2007. It's a great tool but there seems to be a bug. All of the smartart items I have created in my document are cropped along the bottom edge, some more so than others. I, of course, have not intentionally cropped these items. And according to Microsoft's online help, the only way to crop Smartart is to convert it to clip art, then use Word's cropping tools on the clip art, which is what makes me believe this is a bug. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and is there a way to fix it?

• Can I keep columns from breaking across pages?

  In Microsoft Word 2007, if I put a passage of text into a column layout that spans two pages, Word first puts everything that fits on the first page into a column layout on the first page, then the rest into a column layout on the second page. I want to prevent this breaking. The question is difficult to phrase, so here's an example of what I want to accomplish: Instead of a c e b d f ----- g j m h k n i l o I want the columns to be preserved across the page break, like so: a f k b g l ----- c h m d i n e j o Is this possible in Microsoft Word 2007?

• Installing Office 2010 without through group policy without an msi

  I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either 1) need to create an msi for it or 2) need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi? thanks! -Ri

• Office Communicator starts up automatically even though I disabled it

  The title says it all: I am trying desperately to keep OCS from starting automatically when I log in to Windows. The first and only thing I did was unchecking the "Automatically start Communicator when I log on to Windows" option. I can verify that it is still disabled, but OCS ignores that and starts up as soon as I log on to Windows. There is no OCS in the "Startup" folder, and the registry setting "AutoRunWhenLogonToWindows" at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Communicator is set to 0x00000000. I am using Office Communicator 2007 R2 on a Windows 7 with Microsoft Office 2010.

  I'm writing a report and I have some problems with headings. I have this structure: Chapter 1(heading1) 1.1(heading2) 1.1.1(heading3) 1.2(heading2) Chapter2(heading1) 2.1 2.2 The problem is that when I choose heading 1 word writes a number before chapter - 1 chapter 1 I want numbers to appear only from heading 2. I managed to change it using multilevel lists but it doesn't update appropriately. I mean I removed the number before chapter 1 for example but it did not update chapter 2 subheadings that became numbering from 1 (not 2). Please help me out. thanks.

  I got this laptop from my dad and don't have the Microsoft Office 2008 CD which is what he had installed when he gave it to me to use. Now I've got a client that wants me to do some freelance work and sent me to Microsoft Exchange and the first thing it wants me to do in the Exchange is install Office365. The client mentioned very briefly that he would get me the software if necessary but he wasn't specific about what software. Now that I see it my concern is after the job is done I'll be left with a monthly bill to have Office. Will it be possible to go back to Office 2008 without having the CD?

  I downloaded Windows 8 update from Microsoft's site and installed it. Everything works perfectly except Outlook. Sometimes receiving messages doesn't work for whatever reason. Now the problem is sending and replying. Before these two worked but after receiving messages started to work, these problems have occurred. When I try to press New to create a new email, I get the following error message Cannot create the e-mail message because a data file to send and receive messages cannot be found. To add a data file, such as a personal folder file, double click the Mail icon in Windows Control. When I try to reply a message, I get the following one The operation failed. An object could not be found. After the update Outlook worked ok. I've had other problems with Outlook too.

  Windows 8 includes PowerShell out of the box, but not the help. To get the help you run PowerShell as administrator and type "update-help". Making my first steps in RIA Services (VS2010Beta2) and i encountered this problem: created an EF Model (no POCOs), generic repository on top of it and a RIA Service(hosted in an ASP.NET MVC application) and tryed to get data from within the ASP.NET MVC application: worked well. Next step: Silverlight client.   Hi there, I need to update some of the values of the item being edited in my code-behind based on some values in a custom Edit Form on our Rad Grid. Can I access the item (and update some values) from one of the Grid's event handlers? Currently I'm storing the values in temporary variables and then injecting the new values in the ObjectDataSource's Inserting/Updating event handlers, but it would be much nicer if I could do it all in one spot. (I can't do it all in the ObjectDataSource event handlers as I can't access the controls inside my Grid's Edit Form.) I've been playing with the ExtractValues and UpdateValues methods of the GridEditableItem object, but I'm not having any luck. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

  Hello all, I get this error when adding a reference to the Microsoft.Search.Interop.dll library in a new project that I created. Microsoft.Search.Interop.dll is a library that provides some useful API to communicate with Windows Search. I use it in order to add a folder to the system indexer.   I have created Passbooks and they are loaded onto my customer's iOS devices. I need to update these Passbooks. According to the Passbook docs you need to use the Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) to trigger a pull from the iOS device in order to update the Passbook. This APNS push consists of a "push token" and a "pass type id." However, the APNS body is to be left empty. The APNS docs talk about a "device token" needed to send a push notification but make no mention of a "push token." Is an APNS "device token" the same as a Passbook "push token"? How do I send the Passbook "pass type id" in my APNS push?

  I've just installed the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 DTK, both standard and professional. Before that I had the standard and professional Windows Mobile 6 SDKs. All Windows Mobile help pages are missing in Visual Studio 2008's help system - in particular everything in the Microsoft.WindowsMobile namespace. Microsoft.WindowsMobile.DirectX is there, but it's not part of the Windows Mobile 6 SDK or 6.5.3 DTK. If I open the WM6 docs from the freshly created program group, then it's all fine and dandy, but there doesn't seem to have been a proper integration with VS during installation. Any ideas what's gone wrong and how to fix it?

  Hello, I'm having this annoyning problem giving this message in the console: Failed to launch simulated application: iPhone Simulator failed to find the process ID of com.iAndApp.BlockPop. When trying to Build and Run, the application builds fine. The simulator starts but doesn't start the application. However, it manages to do something since the icon for the app is installed in the simulator. I have been searching to find the answer and tried a couple of things, none that worked. This happens for both new and old projects. I.e. when I create a new project I will receive the same error message. I've tried several projects of which all get the same error, so it's not related to the code (and successful builds proves it). Among other things I have updated to xCode 3.2.2. in order to try to solve the problem. Using Mac OSX 10.6.3.
