• jquery split() and indexOf results in "Object doesn't support this property or method"

  I have the following code: var selected = $('#hiddenField').val().split(","); ... if (selected.indexOf(id) > 0) { ... set value ... } I'm dynamically creating a CheckBoxList, and trying to remember the state of the checkboxes by putting the selected IDs into the hidden field. I get an error stating that "Object doesn't support this property or method". My assumption is that selected is an array, which should support indexOf. Is that incorrect?

For example: var obj1 = $("<tag></tag>"); var obj2 = obj1.append("something"); Will obj1 and obj2 be the same meaning obj2 will reference obj1? UPDATE: The above example kind of scratches the surface of what i want to know, a more accurate question is : If i chain function from the jQuery api will they return the same object or a new one (as the case with strings in Java)?

• Is it possible to programmatically edit a sound file based on frequency?

  Just wondering if it's possible to go through a flac, mp3, wav, etc file and edit portions, or the entire file by removing sections based on a specific frequency range? So for example, I have a recording of a friend reciting a poem with a few percussion instruments in the background. Could I write a C program that goes through the entire file and cuts out everything except the vocals (human voice frequency ranges from 85-255 Hz, from what I've been reading)? I'm trying to read this file but it throws me an exception telling that it's not serializable. • Strange Error - "Object moved to here."

  I get the strange error "Object moved to here." on a blank white page when I try to login on a site I created. It works fine locally but not when I deploy it to the test or production server. • Do ORMs normally allow circular relations? If so, how would they handle it?

  I was hacking around trying to make a basic orm that has support for the one => one and one => many relationships. I think I succeeded somewhat, but I am curious about how to handle circular relationships. Say you had something like this: user::hasOne('car'); car::hasMany('wheels'); car::property('type'); wheel::hasOne('car'); You could then do this (theoretically): $u = new user(); echo $u->car->wheels[0]->car->wheels[1]->car->wheels[2]->car->wheels[3]->type; #=> "monster truck" Now, I am not sure why you would want to do this. It seems like it wastes a whole pile of memory and time just to get to something that could have been done in a much shorter way. In my small ORM, I now have 4 copies of the wheel class, and 4 copies of the car class in memory, which causes a problem if I update one of them and save it back to the database, the rest get out of date, and could overwrite the changes that were already made. How do other ORMs handle circular references? Do they even allow it? Do they go back up the tree and create a pointer to one of the parents? DO they let the coder shoot themselves in the foot if they are silly enough to go around in circles?

• Django paging object has issues with Postgresql QuerySets

  I have some django code that runs fine on a SQLite database or on a MySQL database, but it runs into problems with Postgres, and it's making me crazy that no one has has this issue before. I think it may also be related to the way querysets are evaluated by the pager. In a view I have: def index(request, page=1): latest_posts = Post.objects.all().order_by('-pub_date') paginator = Paginator(latest_posts, 5) try: posts = paginator.page(page) except (EmptyPage, InvalidPage): posts = paginator.page(paginator.num_pages) return render_to_response('blog/index.html', {'posts' : posts}) And inside the template: {% for post in posts.object_list %} {# some rendering jazz #} {% endfor %} This works fine with SQLite, but Postgres gives me: Caught TypeError while rendering: 'NoneType' object is not callable To further complicate things, when I switch the Queryset call to: latest_posts = Post.objects.all() Everything works great. I've tried re-reading the documentation, but found nothing, although I admit I'm a bit clouded by frustration at this point. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

  I’ve just started developing for iPhone and am trying to get my head around memory management. I made a small program that shows a map and an annotation on the map. For the annotation I made a simple class that implements the MKAnnotation protocol. To create and add the annotation I wrote this: [self.myMapView addAnnotation:[[MyAnnotation alloc] init]]; It worked fine until I tried to release the object. Nothing to release. This is what I would have done in C#, I guess it doesn’t work without garbage collection? So is this the only way to do it? • Proxy object references in MVC code

  Hi there, I am just figuring out best practice with MVC now I have a project where we have chosen to use it in anger. My question is. If creating a list view which is bound to an IEnumerable is this bad practise? Would it be better to seperate the code generated by the WCF Service reference into a datastructure which essentially holds the same data but abstracts further from the service, meaning that the UI is totally unaware of the service implementation beneath. or do people just bind to the proxy object types and have done with it ? My personal feeling is to create an abstraction but this seems to violate the DRY principle.

• Looking for a free tool to visualize object relationships for C#

  Here is my ideal solution: a free tool that reads a .csporj or .sln and generates a pretty picture that shows all the objects and how they are related. By relationships, I don't mean inheritance but rather dependency. For example, if we have a Car object and Car has a member variable Wheel, I would like that Car depends on Wheel to be visualized in the graph. I know visual studio can do inheritance graphs, but that is only half of what I am looking for. Is what I am looking for possible? Are there any tools that do something similar?   What management tools (open source or otherwise) are there to track the location of data, the services that deliver/use that data and the services themselves. If you believe the snake oil a combination of DB, ESB and SOA will deliver anything anywhere, but how do you know what's where. BTW I'm not interested at the WSDL level, I'm thinking of a tool that the users/BA community would populate and use. A combination of SOA and Database is now the bedrock of most applications, however what used to be called Data Dictionaries, and would now be Service Catalogues? or MetaData repositories still seem to live in purely DataCentric world.

• Sharepoint publishing cache- counter missing on WFE(Object Caching)

  I want to tune object caching in my sharepoint environment. The way to do is check sharepoint publishing cache counter through perfmon on your farm. I have one application server and 2 WFE but when I am trying to create counter for my WFE its showing Sharepoint publishing cache but I am not able to add any instance of it but when I select my application server I can see all the instances. But If I want to check publishing hit ratio i need to run this on WFE also ...correct me if I m wrong? How to resolve this issue? Also, how to check the hit ratio as our site is not go-live so we don't get enuf users to hit the site to check this thing. Does it means that I can tune it up only my site go live and real load will get on it. Thanks, Amit

I would like to see a more detailed list of features that you consider missing from EF4. Personally, I think the lack of enum support is the biggest drawback of EF4.

• How to use a servlet to repsond to a request for an object

  I'm sure this is easy, but I don't work with website development very often and I'm lost on this one. I have a web application that needs to support multiple clients with different settings, icons and other content. The contents of these files are in separate directories for each client. What I would like to do is respond to a request sent to a jsp/java servlet. The servlet will look up the proper folder location in a database (I have the database stuff working) and send the actual object to the requesting page whether it is xml, graphic or video. How do I do that? What methods should I be using. Help I'm lost! :(

• Initial capacity of collection types, i.e. Dictionary, List

  Certain collection types in .Net have an optional "Initial Capacity" constructor param. i.e. Dictionary<string, string> something = new Dictionary<string,string>(20); List<string> anything = new List<string>(50); I can't seem to find what the default initial capacity is for these objects on MSDN. If I know I will only be storing 12 or so items in a dictionary, doesn't it make sense to set the initial capacity to something like 20? My reasoning is, assuming the capacity grows like it does for a StringBuiler, which doubles each time the capacity is hit, and each re-allocation is costly, why not pre-set the size to something you know will hold your data, with some extra room just in case? If the initial capacity is 100, and I know I will only need a dozen or so, it seems as though the rest of that allocated RAM is allocated for nothing. Please spare me the "premature optimization" speil for the O(n^n)th time. I know it won't make my apps any faster or save any meaningful amount of memory, this is mostly out of curiosity.

  Is there a quick way (e.g. tool) to detect, from the source (or maybe even from compiled classes), which parts of an application call Java API methods that are only implemented in a specific Java version? (e.g. which parts of my app are Java6-specific) I don't necessarily want to hop through all ClassMismatchErrors and avoid the trial-and-error-method. Let's say I only want to document which parts of an application won't work if they were writte for, e.g., Java6 and I want to run it in a version 5 JDK. Is there something like this? Google did not help this time, nor did I find any solution here (a rare case indeed:)

  when validating a site using w3c validator it tells me the tag is not valid markup. So i take it out and it works on safari/chrome but not firefox(3.5.x) but validates fine. Is there something in the tag i must add in order for firefox to display flash.
