How do I resolve BSOD: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA?

I have been trouble shooting this for a few days and cannot fix this anyhow. Computer specifications Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 (Bloomfield) @ 2.67 ( no OC ) RAM: 6144MB RAM GPU: 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1Go in SLI (sli is not enabled anyway at the moment anyway) Drives: OCZ RevoDrive OCZSSDPX-1RVD0120 PCI-E x4 120GB PCI Express MLC Internal SSD [RAID-0]. (I know this could potentilly cause trouble but I had the BSOD before using this drive) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bare Drive Click here for a log of a crash I just had. Some info Occurence: It seems pretty random so far, haven't noticed any kind of pattern I tried: Windows memory diagnostic (went smoothly at 1066mhz) As I said, it was still happening on my HDD, so when I bought the revodrive I install a new OS on there and still got the error, I believed it happened and I had no drivers installed at that point (not 100% sure) Change the following registry value to 1 (true): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager \MemoryManagement\ClearPageFileAtShutdown Tried to lower even more ram clock Made sure ram timing was set to recommended by manufacturer Verified if motherboard was in good physical condition (yes and its brand new) There is one thing to note, when I got the new motherboard, I installed the new drivers WITHOUT formatting and the I removed the motherboard drivers that I could remove from the control panel (pretty much the first things that have been installed). Could this cause an issue even ON THE OTHER drive (revodrive). Hopefully someone can help me, I am getting tired of this, spending so much money and cannot get this to work correctly. HP LaserJet 2550 has a carousel motor error

I have a LaserJet 2550, and it's worked pretty good for a long time (except for some slowness a while back, spooling I think), but just recently it suddenly quit working. We moved this summer, but left it at our other place, and just recently when my Dad went over there to try to print something out, it didn't work. When you turn it on, you hear the fan give a false start (basically a quick pulse), and the carousel goes through its usual thing. Then it starts up in earnest like it's getting ready to print something. All of a sudden it just stops. Everything stops, and the three lower lights are steady. When I push the Go button, the Go light (bottom of the 3) turns off, but the other two stay on. I looked it up on the HP website and it says it is a carousel motor problem. I called HP, but they said it is out of warranty. I've opened the cover and held the switch with a screw driver so I could watch it, and it goes through its thing like I described (doesn't seem to make a difference whether the imaging drum is in or not), then when it stops it kind of seems to jump back a little bit (the carousel). I hope this all makes sense (I know you like details), and hopefully you also know what to do to fix it. Thanks.

Windows Vista: Screen remains darkened for 30-60 seconds *after* UAC prompt

Fixing someone's Vista computer. Process: I click any program or process that opens a User Account Control prompt. Screen goes dim so you may hit Continue to perform a secure user action. I click Continue Screen goes black for 30 seconds to 1 minute while you wait for the screen to return. In another example I click Cancel and screen still then goes black for 30 seconds to a minute. In that timeframe a chime goes off while you wait. (No chime if it was being cancelled.) Then screen comes back to continue with whatever. Something is occurring after the UAC prompt. Considering everything is practically a UAC acceptance this can get pretty annoying pretty quickly. Laptop has external monitor to regular external plug. Works fine. Laptop also has USB IOGEAR additional external video card. This is problematic but when unplugged same above behaviour occurs. I've ruled out monitor interference since same blackout after the UAC prompt appears with external monitors plugged in or when rebooted with no external monitors. Any suggestions on how to address this problem?

How to edit a read-only document in LibreOffice?

I need to fill a form (which I received in .doc format and saved as .odt). The file is read-only except for the fields where I can enter the information. Unfortunately, with the fields filled it doesn't fit on one page, and I need to edit it so I can print and submit it. With LibreOffice beta 3, I could edit anything outside of the fields, and the fonts were slightly smaller, so it fit on the page even with the fields filled. Today I upgraded LibreOffice, and when I opened to edit a field where I had a mistake, it no longer fits on the page, and I can't edit it. When I opened the properties it says that the document is NOT read-only, but it is. When I try to delete text it tells me that I can't edit the read-only content. Can anyone give me some advice, because I've been trying to print my form for 2 hours already. I tried AbiWord and KWord, but both are missing elements from the page (though the forms fit). I can also edit the margins (Format - Page is dimmed, but when I begin to edit a field it's no longer dimmed)med

managing a high traffic media sharing website

i'm in the process of developing a website that i predict will generate a lot of traffic. the site will be similar to many other sites offering free media streaming: mp3's. we are going to start with a pretty minimal amount of media to share, but the basic idea is that artists will set up a profile page with music they have made available for consumers to visit the page and listen to the music. we are starting with just a handful of artists, but i think that this project will generate more and more artist pages. eventually i'd like to set it up so consumers can create personalized playlists. how can i best prepare server space and bandwidth capabilities? i have a small team of web designers and programmers working on the site, as i am pretty illiterate when it comes to site management. as the ring leader of this organization, i am more or less looking for financial requirements and monthly burn rate estimates. i don't have a ton of capitol to start with, putting together a business plan, but i am seeking investments. i have a game plan to grow fast enough to be successful, and slow enough to manage the financial growth requirements. any questions i may have failed to ask myself? is it realistic to start this project on a shared server, and upgrade? any financial advice you think i can use? i really appreciate any advice given, as this is my first business venture. thank you all in advance. Windows Server 2008 network speed slow, Xen 3.4.3 HVM ISO

I've setup a VM running Windows Server 2008 on a host node running Xen 3.4.3-5 and the following kernel: 2.6.18-308.1.1.el5xen #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 05:38:01 EST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux The network speed on the VM is very slow--using the online speed tests I can only get it up to 8-9mbps. The line is 100mbps burstable and the host node has no problem achieving those speeds. If it setup a VM running CentOS, it too has no problems achieving those speeds. I've done some pretty exhaustive troubleshooting, but nothing has helped: New VM installations of Win2k8 do have the same network problem. Upgrading to most recent kernel-xen did not help (2.6.18-308.1.1.el5xen). Upgrading from xen 3.4.0 to xen 3.4.3-5 did not help. Disabling Windows firewall, etc did not help. Changing network card device config from auto negotiation to manually be 100mbps full duplex did not help. Changing the network receive buffer packet size did not help (tried all combos from 64k to 8k). At this point I'm pretty much out of ideas--any help would be appreciated!

RRAS VPN on windows 2k3 AD, can access rras server only.

I'm setting up a test lab and here is the current configuration: 192.168.86.201 - a windows 2003 machine acting as PDC with AD/DNS/DHCP/WINS. 192.168.86.62 - windows 2003 machine is the RRAS server with IAS, also a file/print server. 192.168.86.6 - gateway/router to internet 192.168.86.21 - Windows XP Workstation Everything works on the internal network, File/Print/AD etc. Whenever a user connects via vpn to the RRAS server remotely using their domain credentials, they are assigned an ip address from the 192.168.86.201 machine along with the wins server address etc. The vpn user can then ping/access resources on the RRAS server, but cannot ping/access resources of any other machines by name or ip. However, if I ping by name, it does resolve to the correct ip address, just no replies. I did notice that on the RRAS server the 'internal' interface gets an ip address of 192.168.86.75 when a remote user connects, and the remote user is assigned, for example 192.168.86.71 . The RRAS server responds on both the .62 and .75 ip addresses. The client also unchecks the 'use remote default gateway option'. Also, I tried connecting a laptop to the physical network, joining the domain, then going remote and dialing the connection before domain login, and everything seems to work, e.g. browse-able shares via network neighborhood. But I can't really join the domain remotely if I cannot access any other resources. I really need to monitor traffic to see whats happening to those packets but won't be able to until this weekend. Any help is appreciated, will provide whatever configurations are needed.

Will disabling hyperthreading improve performance on our SQL Server install

The theory is both CPUs have very similar performance, if anything the X5560 is slightly faster. However, SQL Server 2008 R2 performance has been pretty bad over the last day or so and CPU usage has been pretty high. Page life expectancy is massive, we are getting almost 100% cache hit for the pages, so memory is not a problem. We are experiencing a large amount of variance with query executions, typically many queries appear to be slower that they were on our previous DB server and CPU is really high. Will disabling Hyperthreading help at reducing our CPU usage and increase throughput?

LASER x Deskjet Printer

I am about to buy a color printer. I had a b&W laserjet printer in the past but since then I use deskjet for decades. I need a printer that can deliver high quality as these photo deskjet printers but I am tired of paying ink that costs $9,000 per gallon of ink (1 gallon = 3.785 liters = 300 cartridges = $9,000). So, I was pondering about buying a color laser, but I am not sure if these printers can deliver the same quality and worth the investment in terms of toner consumption. I remembered that my old laserjet printer was able to print 1100 pages per toner cartridge. The deskjet printers I have can print 500 pages per cartridge. Price by price, 2 deskjet cartridges have more or less the same cost as one toner cartridge and in theory prints almost the same. I am not sure if this is true for color lasers. What you guys can tell me about quality, toner cost and cost per page using laser or deskjet. Does it worths the change? Remember that a deskjet printer costs $50 and a laser printer costs $200. thanks.

Split Tunnel VPN using incorrect Tunnel

Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Archive software for big files and fast index

I'm currently using tar for archiving some files. Problem is: archives are pretty big, contains many data and tar is very slow when listing and extracting. I often need to extract single files or folders from the archive, but I don't currently have an external index of files. So, is there an alternative for Linux, allowing me to build uncompressed archive files, preserving the file attributes AND having fast access list table? I'm talking about archives of 10 to 100 GB, and it's pretty impractical to wait several minutes to access a single file. Anyway, any trick to solve this problem is welcome (but single archives are non-optional, so no rsync or similar). Thanks in advance! EDIT: I'm not compressing archives, and using tar I think they are too slow. To be precise about "slow", I'd like that: listing archive content should take time linear in files count inside the archive, but with very little constant (e.g. if a list of all the files is included at the head of the archive, it could be very fast). extraction of a target file/directory should (filesystem premitting) take time linear with the target size (e.g. if I'm extracting a 2MB PDF file in a 40GB directory, I'd really like it to take less than few minutes... If not seconds). Of course, this is just my idea and not a requirement. I guess such performances could be achievable if the archive contained an index of all the files with respective offset and such index is well organized (e.g. tree structure).

I need a printer that can deliver high quality as these photo inkjet printers, but I'm tired of paying for ink that costs $9,000 per gallon (1 gallon = 3.785 liters = 300 cartridges = $9,000). Internet doesn't work when enable local network

We have the following network setup: A) Router IP 192.168.51.49 B) Windows Server 2008 R2 with dual NIC: Lan A) WAN interface (192.168.51.50) ( Used for internet) Lan B) LAN interface (192.168.30.228) ( used for local connectivity ) When I keep both LAN Enabled than my internet doesn't work, but if I disable my local LAN then internet works fine. How can I resolve this issue? Speeding up Outlook Express on Windows XP over satellite

My brother is in the field with Doctors Without Borders. I'm posting this question on his behalf. We use outlook express (on a pc running windows XP) and a 9600 baud dial up satellite phone modem to get our email direct from the server in Paris. As this is a very expensive way to communicate (our satellite bill is $50K a year, no joke), it seems like trying to streamline is a good idea. Here's the question- when we connect, the sequence goes: Send outbox mails. This goes pretty quickly, probably 10-15 seconds for each email, up to maybe a couple minutes for an email of 150k or so). The status bar moves pretty quickly, according to the emails sent. The system then says "Checking for new messages on (our account name), and "Receiving list of messages from server". This takes a long time. Like 10-15 minutes. The status bar crawls along. Then it receives the messages. "Receiving messages from server". Again, each message takes 10-15 seconds, and this part moves along reasonably fast. I'm curious as to what is going on in the second part. It takes forever, and doesn't seem to be part of the sending or receiving messages themselves. Is there a way to speed up the process by changing a preference with communicating with the server or something? Does anyone have any advice for him speeding up what Outlooks Express is doing? Obviously his software is ancient and adding more software is not realistic based on the connection speed. Thanks!

How can I parse/ transform text log data before it gets captured in SCOM 2007 R2?

I'm pretty much a noob with System Center Operations Manager 2007, and I'm probably missing something pretty basic, but I'm stumped anyway. We're setting up monitoring on some of our servers, and we'd like to capture data from some plain text log files (e.g. DNS debug logs, DHCP logs). It looks to me like I can set up a generic text file monitoring rule and get events captured into the main Ops Manager database, but my understanding is that the whole line of text from the plain text log gets captured as one field. In an ideal world, we'd be able to parse or transform that log file data to make it easier to query later. Is this possible? Is it easy? Do I have to buy expensive 3rd-party software to do it? One more thing: it would be even better if there was a way to stuff this data into the Audit Collection Services (ACS) database instead of the main one, but I'll take what I can get. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is a rubber keyboard suitable for heavy use?

Every keyboard wears out with time, and mine has some age already. The day it fails is coming closer and closer. So I'm slowly starting to look around for a new one. I use the keyboard for gaming and programming, so it gets some pretty solid use. I also tend to eat by the computer, so there's plenty of... uhh... lifeforms down there. Anyway, I was looking at these rubber keyboards. They come pretty cheap (my local computer shop has one for less than $20) and they seem to have some nice properties. They can be easily cleaned, they're quiet, and can be rolled up when needed (plus no worries about spilled drinks). However I'm wondering what their type-ability is. If I can't write on it at a decent speed, the rest of the features don't matter. Not that I'm a fast typer, but being a professional progammer does give a boost to the skill. I couldn't find any reviews on the net so I'm turning to you. Who has used these keyboards and what was your experience? Perhaps there is something else I haven't though of why such a keyboard would not be a good idea?

transparently proxying a firewalled web application from a non-standard port to port 80

I have a web application that serves on port 8088 on $server. However, the only port accessible from remote on $server is port 80. Furthermore, only CGI programs can execute on port 80. I would like to write a CGI program accessible via port 80 that allows one to use the web app running on port 8088. From my view, an ideal solution would be some sort of Java web browser that simply opened up a window and allowed me to use the program running on that port. The CGI program would simply initiate a web browser applet or something. How to use Zune software to listen to podcasts with generic MP3 player?

I listen to a bunch of podcasts - a great way to fill the otherwise mindless space of a daily commute. My MP3 player is a Transonic brand, appears on my computer as a generic storage device. I've been using iTunes to download the podcasts, and manually moving the files out of the disk folder onto my player, but this is pretty tedious. iTunes also fails to recognise that the files are gone and leaves them in the list. (Actually, iTunes for windows is pretty much a dog, but that's a different rant.) The Zune software is 99% of what I want in a podcast downloader - performs well, looks nice, downloads reliably and so on. Some features - like only downloading the next five unheard episodes of a podcast - are superb. However, if I manually move the files across to the MP3 player, the Zune software concludes that the file has never been downloaded, and downloads it again. This leads me to my question: What is a good way to use the Zune software to download podcasts for listening on a generic MP3 player? Are there any addons for the Zune software to make this easier? Registry hacks? Can I configure the Zune software to not download the same episode multiple times? Is there a way for the Zune software to populate my MP3 player directly, instead of having to copy files?

apache with php fastcgi keeps going down

I have an apache2 server configured with MPM worker and php fast cgi. Lately the apache logs have been telling me that MaxClients is being reached frequently, even though it's already pretty high. Computer locking up, looking for bootable hardware diagnostic tool.

Well today I helped my friend build a computer. All went pretty well until we got to installing Win7. Thing is, we thought, it was crashing constantly. I adjusted pretty much every setting in the BIOS and removed as much hardware as possible to try and prevent a crash. No dice. So far I've tried running an Ubuntu live cd without the harddrive installed. Nope, crashed on boot. And then I just tried Microsoft's ram utility disk and it eventually locked up on that (the ram passed though). So it seems to me like it's either the CPU (AMD PhenomII x3) or the motherboard that could be bad, but I don't know how to test them individually for problems. I thought it could be a overheating issue, but the BIOS reports that the CPU temp is fine idling around 34C. Any advice or diagnostic disk that could help me out? TL;DR: Computer locks up frequently during use (cannot even boot/install an operating system), memory is fine, probably CPU or Mobo, BIOS says CPU temps are fine. What should I try?

Why am I getting blank error messages in my Apache error log?

I am running Apache 2.2 on 64bit Windows Server 2008 Std edition with ActivePerl 5.8.9. grepping a substring from a grep result

Given a log file, I will usually do something like this: grep 'marker-1234' filter_log What is the difference in using '' or "" or nothing in the pattern? The above grep command will yield many thousands of lines; what I desire. Within those lines, There is usually one chunk of data I am after. Sometimes, I use awk to print out the fields I am after. In this case, the log format changes, I can't rely on position exclusively, not to mention, the actual logged data can push position forward. To make this understandable, lets say the log line contained an IP address, and that was all I was after, so I can later pipe it to sort and unique and get some tally counts. An example may be: 2010-04-08 some logged data, indetermineate chars - [marker-1234] (123.123.123.123) from: [email protected] to [email protected] [stat-xyz9876] The first grep command will give me many thousands of lines like the above, from there, I want to pipe it to something, probably sed, which can pull out a pattern within, and print only the pattern. For this example, using an the IP address would suffice. I tried. Is sed not able to understand [0-9]{1,3}. as a pattern? I had to [0-9][0-9][0-9]. which yielded strange results until the entire pattern created. This is not specific to an IP address, the pattern will change, but I can use that as a learning template. Can't make Dovecot communicate with Postfix using SASL (warning: SASL: Connect to private/auth failed: No such file or directory)

Solved. I will leave this as a reference to other people, as I have seen this error reported often enough on line. I had to change the path smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth in my /etc/postfix/main.cf to relative, instead of absolute. This is because in Debian Postfix runs chrooted (and how does this affect the path structure?! Anyone?) -- I am trying to get Dovecot to communicate with Postfix for SMTP support via SASL. the master plan is to be able to host multiple e-mail accounts on my (Debian Lenny 64 bits) server, using virtual users. Whenever I test my current configuration, by running telnet server-IP smtp I get the following error on mail.log warning: SASL: Connect to /var/spool/postfix/private/auth failed: No such file or directory Now, Dovecot is supposed to create the auth socket file, yet it doesn't. I have given the right privileges to the directory private, and even tried creating a auth file manually. The output of postconf -a is cyrus dovecot Am I correct in assuming from this that the package was compiled with SASL support? My dovecot.conf also holds client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } I have tried every solution out there, and am pretty much desperate after a full day of struggling with the issue. Can anybody help me, pretty please?
