• Persistence with Vaadin

  Hi I'm trying to learn vaadin. I'm really confused how to do any kind of application development with persistence because if I have a reference to my service layer objects, they get stored in session and I really don't want that. Persistence stuff just isn't serializable. My case is that I have an already made application that uses Spring and I'm creating a new UI for it with Vaadin. I can inject the spring stuff to my Vaadin application but that gets stored in the session. Any tips? By the way how do you post in the Vaadin forums? I can't find a post button or way to register :)

• Element binding in Silverlight

  Where can I find some good documentation on data/element binding? My Google searches haven't turned much up. I had a custom class with two properties named Text and Value. When I tried binding a list to a listbox it wouldn't work. By chance I modifed my datatemplate from this <TextBox Text="{Binding Text}"></TextBox> to this <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Text}"></TextBox> and then everything worked great. I need some indepth documenation/samples to data/element binding. I don't understand why some examples have the path set whereas others do not. A full explanation of this, and all other nice to know tips would be much appreciated.

• Starting work on a Pre-existing Project

  So this is more of a generic question. I seem to keep finding myself being put on larger and larger projects. Recently I have been assigned to a very large project written in C and VHDL. The goal is for me to become familiar with the code and eventually take the lead on the project. This is by far the largest project I have been assigned to work on that I didn't start. So here is my question: What methods/tools do you use to learn how everything works? Do you just increase and expand on comments? Do you make a UML representation of the project? • What are good memory management techniques in Flash/as3

  Hello! So I am pretty familiar with memory management in Java, C and C++; however, in flash what constructs are there for memory management? I assume flash has a sort of virtual machine like java, and I have been assuming that things get garbage collected when they are set to null. I am not sure if this is actually the case though. Also is there a way to force garbage collection in Flash? Any other tips? Thanks

• Is it possible to tell IIS 7 to process the request queue in parallel?

  Currently we are developing an ASMX, ASP 2.0, IIS 7 web service that does some calculations (and return a dynamically generated document) and will take approx. 60 seconds to run. Since whe have a big machine with multiple cores and lots of RAM, I expected that IIS tries its best to route the requests that arrive in its requests queue to all available threads of the app pool's thread pool. But we experience quiet the opposite: When we issue requests to the ASMX web service URL from multiple different clients, the IIS seems to serially process these requests. I.e. request 1 arrives, is being processed, then request 2 is being processed, then request 3, etc. Question: Is it possible (without changing the C# code of the web service) to configure IIS to process requests in parallel, if enough threads are available? If yes: how should I do it? It no: any workarounds/tips? Thanks Uwe

• posting php variable that contains apostrophe

  I am having trouble posting a php variable to another page. The variable is retrieved from a dropdown selected by the user and if it contains an apostrophe, I only get the part prior to the apostrophe posted. I.E. If I want to post "Cooper's Hawk" I am only receiving "Cooper". How do I escape this properly so that I can post the entire string? This is what I have: echo '<form method="POST" action="advanced_search2.php">'; $dropdown_english_name = "<select class = 'dropdown' name='english_name'> <option>ALL</option>"; $posted_value = ($_POST['english_name']); echo;$posted_value;die; So, to clarify from the above code, the posted string is "cooper's hawk" but the echoed output is "Cooper". • Paging enormous tables on DB2

  We have a view that, without constraints, will return 90 million rows and a reporting application that needs to display paged datasets of that view. We're using nhibernate and recently noticed that its paging mechanism looks like this: select * from (select rownumber() over() as rownum, this_.COL1 as COL1_20_0_, this_.COL2 as COL2_20_0_ FROM SomeSchema.SomeView this_ WHERE this_.COL1 = 'SomeValue') as tempresult where rownum between 10 and 20 The query brings the db server to its knees. I think what's happening is that the nested query is assigning a row number to every row satisfied by the where clause before selecting the subset (rows 10 - 20). Since the nested query will return a lot of rows, the mechanism is not very efficient. I've seen lots of tips and tricks for doing this efficiently on other SQL platforms but I'm struggling to find a DB2 solution. In fact an article on IBM's own site recommends the approach that nhibernate has taken. Is there a better way?

I hardly follow any naming conventions... neither for variables.. nor for methods... nor for classes... nor for tables, columns, SPs... Further to this, I hardly comment anything while programming... • Career Day in kindergarten: how to demonstrate programming in 20 minutes?

  I was invited to the kindergarten group of my elder daughter to talk, and aswer the kids' questions, about my profession. There are 26 kids of age 4-6 in the group (plus 3 teachers who are fairly scared of anything related to programming and IT themselves, but bold enough to learn new tricks). I would have about 20-30 minutes, without projector or anything. (They have an old computer though, which by its look may be a 486, and I am not even sure if it's functioning.) My research turned up excellent earlier threads, with lots of good tips: How would you explain your job to a 5-year old? Career Day: how do I make “computer programmer” sound cool to 8 year olds? What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day? My situation is different from each of the above though. So any advice on how to teach the kids (and their teachers) in a fun way about programming is appreciated.

  Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?

  I'm writing a web based application that will have its own authorization/authentication mechanism (traditional cookie/session based user/pass). However, depending on the organization that licenses the software, I want them to be able to plug in their own existing internal authentication system as a way to replace mine. Ideally, they'd have to run as little code as possible on their end; I'm trying to make this a mostly hosted service. I'm aware of the existence of OAuth, but don't entirely understand how I would go about implementing the system at a higher level. Any tips would be appreciated.

• is it possible to achieve an image clipping/masking effect with html + css3?

  Hi - I'm trying to place a nice border around an image that's 250x250, using only html and css. The markup is this: <div id="img-container"><img src="pic.jpg" border="0"/></div> And the css is: #img-container { height: 225px; width: 225px; padding: 3px; border: 1px solid black; z-index: 10; position: relative; overflow: hidden; border-radius: 10px; } #img-container img { z-index: 5; } Basically, I want the div container to clip the picture's edges that exceed its boundaries. This will achieve the rounded edges effect using the border-radius property (-moz-border-radius, -webkit-border-radius, etc) - if it actually works or could even be done. • ASP.NET MVC TDD with LINQ and SQL database

  I am trying to start a new MVC project with tests and I thought the best way to go would have 2 databases. 1 for testing against and 1 for when I run the app and use it (also test really as it's not production yet). For the test database I was thinking of putting create table scripts and fill data scripts within the test setup method and then deleting all this in the tear down method. I am going to be using Linq to SQL though and I don't think that will allow me to do this? Will I have to just go the ADO route if I want to do it this way? Or should I just use a mock object and store data as an array or something?. Any tips on best practices? How did Jeff go about doing this for StackOveflow?

• NFOP performance problem

  We're using NFOP in a project (C#, ASP.NET 2.0) to ultimately return PDF files to the user. The process currently goes like this: Stored Procedure - XML XML - XSLT - XSL-FO XSL-FO - NFOP - PDF This works fine, the PDF is generated BEAUTIFULLY. The problem is that it takes 300+ seconds to do it. The ANTS profiler indicates that the problem is sitting in the driver.run() method inside of NFOP. It's not like this is a gargantuan amount of data, the size of the xsl-fo source going into the nfop driver object is ~980k. What's the most likely source and resolution of this problem? ANY hints or tips or answers are most appreciated, we were supposed to head to VA scan at 11 am. :|

  I have a .net visual studio solution with a number of projects (class libraries and a web application). I did some refractoring which moved files between projects, created new projects, deleted ones not being used and renamed some existing projects. The solution builds without an issue but when I run the web application, the following exception occurs: "Could not load file or assembly 'XXX.YYY' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." The project called XXX.YYY which was deleted in the refractoring outputed a dll called XXX.YYY. But this isnt used anywhere in the application. I deleted the web applications obj directory and bin folder and rebuild but it still occurs. Anyone have any ideas when this might be occurring, any tips??

Is there any way to see the return value of the function at this point, without letting the code return to the caller function? Foo.Bar() is a function call which generates a unique path (for example). So it's NOT constant. In VB.NET it's possible by entering the function's name in the Watch, which will then threat it as a variable. But in C# this is not possible, any other tips? PS: rewriting is not an option.

  One particular problem I was having was using ${word_selection} in an Eclipse PDT template. I was recently trying to use some code templates with Eclipse PDT 2.1 to speed up some common tasks. We use a lot of getters/setters, so I wrote the following template. function get${word_selection}() { return $$this->getData('${word_selection}'); } function set${word_selection}($$${word_selection}) { $$this->setData('${word_selection}', $$${word_selection}); } I named the template "getset" and the only way I know to use the Code Assist is to type: "getset" then hit my code assist keys (I have it set to Esc, but I think the default was Ctrl+Space). The problem is, this doesn't actually let me select a word to be used by the ${word_selection}. how do I type in my template name, hit the key combo, and have a word selected all at the same time? I also want to know what kinds of templates people have set up and any other tips for using templates to speed of programming.

So best practice should be remember last update of feed and control it for change in x-hour interval? And how to handle if downloader will be restarted?
