• Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

  Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

• Suggestions for a very easy to edit CMS?

  I need advice/suggestions. At my place of work - we have a large data set. We would like to server the data up as editable html pages. (Its mostly lists of simple text) We would like to add data, change it's order, update text etc...from the editable pages. It has to have a pretty low bar for usability and WYSIWYG is a must. The folks who will edit are not programmers by a long shot. We are not sure Wiki will work. It might have to do - but not sure. Changes have to be tracked and written back into the DB I am thinking some kind of open source CMS might work? Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal - something that can get us up and running pretty quickly. I really am open to suggestions - not sure where to begin on this one. Thanks all

  I'm pretty much a newbie at php (at the "install an app and try to tweak it a bit" stage). Is there a tool anywhere which can take a script which is spread over many files and show you all the code which is processed (for a given set of arguments passed to the script) in a single output? For example, I want to make a call to zen cart from a script in a different language, which returns a category listing without any surrounding page. So I want to be able to trace what the actual process is to generate that then strip off all the unwanted bits to create a custom script.

• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

• Integer output in Java method not same as pre-converted char value.

  I'm trying to parse a simple text file in an integer method and then output an integer from such file so that other parts of the program can use it. For testing purposes it also displays the character value (9 in this case). The integer value for some reason is 57. I've also tried it with another part of the text file (which in that case should be 5, but is instead 53). After looking at an ASCII chart, I see that 57 is the ASCII version of the "symbol" 9 and that 53 is the ASCII version of the "symbol" 5. Is there any simple way I can fix this? I'm getting kind of frustrated as I'm a Java newbie (I've mostly only used FreePascal before this).

  Hi people, I'm in final year of my degree and it is required that i do a final year project. I have decided to do something on adaptive websites that implements customisation, personalisation and basically adaptation via heat maps and weblogs. So for a prototype i would be designing a website for tertairy level students and see if these technologies improve the usbability of the site. i would model it after my school's website. So here's the question, What would be a better language to use.. i have some knowledge in struts 2 framework and some knowledge in php. could say a newbie at both.. so i was wondering what would be the easier and faster way to go. php or the struts2 framework? thanks.

• Asp.net Site on GoDaddy Loads Slowly

  I just published a very small site to GoDaddy that I programmed in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008. The site only contains 6 sheets, none of which are data intensive. Each has a few small images that serve mostly to navigate to the other sheets. There is no data, no SQL, nothing like that. There is one master page that governs the page layout for all of the pages. Everything works fine, for the most part. I am posting because the site loads quite slowly, particularly considering how little content is being loaded. Can anybody give me any advice about what I should look at to speed this thing up a little bit? Is this an asp.net issue? Use of master pages? Godaddy? Something else? I'm a newbie, so speak slowly. • Problem with displaying graphs on a Qt canvas

  Let's say I'm a Qt newbie. I want a good Qt library for displaying simple graphs. I've found the quanava library. But there is a problem. When I compiled a basic example it looks like graph edges are not painted properly when moving nodes. I don't have any idea where is a bug but this code seems to be rather simple. I think this is a problem with paint method in NodeItem class. Maybe someone has already solved this problem because this library is quite popular.

• How important is caching for a site's speed with PHP?

  I've just made a user-content orientated website http://www.humanisms.co.uk Its done in PHP, MySQL and jQuery's AJAX, at the moment there is only a dozen or so submissions and already i can feel it lagging slightly when it goes to a new page (therefore running a new mysql query) Is it most important for me to try and optimise my mysql queries (by prepared statements) or is it worth in looking at CDN's (amazon s3) and caching (much like the WordPress plugin WP Super Cache) which works by serving static HTML files when there hasnt been new content submitted. Which route is the most beneficial, for me as a developer, to take, ie. where am i better off concentrating my efforts to speed up the site?

  I see the savepath has no value but does it default to something? Are the other values OK? I have access to the server and PHP files but how and what do I change? The specific issue - On page 1: session_start(); $_SESSION['uType']=$row['usertype']; //save user type to session print_r($_SESSION); //Prints the user type successfully On page 2: session_start(); print_r($_SESSION); //BLANK?? Observed: Page 1 displays the session data. However, there are NO cookies created anywhere on the browser? Page 1 does a require to display page 2. Page 2 does not contain the session data. Using FireFox as the target browser (looking at cookies with web developer add-in) How do I get the session to work across all pages? Thank You and yes I am a newbie at this.

  I've been trying to integrate deploying java .war's in Glassfish V3 through Maven. While I have found a few plugins, none of them look to be very active: Maven Glassfish Plugin Eskato's Wordpress Blog on Maven And I got the most information out of Eskato's Blog, it was written March 2008, so I don't know what the state of Glassfish Maven integration is, nor can I find a suitable plugin to work with. With the Maven Glassfish Plugin I have had some success, but it still doesn't work entirely well for all goals it says it supports, which makes some of the commands ineffective. Has anyone else been able to integrate Glassfish V3 and Maven successfully? If so, what resources did you use to get it done?

  I worked on a website for which I had a "development URL" that looked something like this: www.domainname.com.php5-9.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/ Now, several weeks after the website launch, there is at least one page of content indexed on Google with that URL. Question: How do I redirect all requests from that test URL to reroute to the actual domain? So, for instance, I would want: www.domainname.com.php5-9.dfw1-2.websitetestlink.com/page-name To go to: www.domainname.com/page-name The website is powered by WordPress and hosted on a PHP server. I've experimented with .htaccess without much success.

• Zip up groups of webpages for viewing in the browser

  I think there should be a standard for saving and viewing bunches of webpages as a website. For instance, say I have a whole bunch of pages, such as I get from the WordPress plugin "Really Static" (which saves the entire site), and I have all the links start with a slash (to make linking to supporting files easier). Now, I can't really use those links if I am reading it from the file system. If there would be a standard where we could zip up files, give them a unique extension (like "hzip" for html zip), and open the file with any browser, which would display it as though the root of that file were the root of the pages. "file://examplefile.hzip/" The links would then all work. This would really help sharing and copying groups of webpages. Is this a good idea? A bad one? What do you think?

• Calculating terrain height in 3d-space

  Hi I'm diving into 3d programming a bit and am currently learning by writing a procedural terrain generator that generates terrain based on a heightmap. I would also want to implement some physics and my first attempt at terrain collision was by simply checking the current position vs the heightmap. This however wont work well against small objects as you'd have to calculate the height by taking the heightdifference of the nearest vertices of the object and doing this every colision check is pretty slow. Beleive me I tried googling for it but there's simply so much crap and millions of blogs posting ripped-of newbie tutorials everywhere with basically no real information on the subject, I can't find anything that explains it or even names any generally used techniques. I'm not asking for code or a complete solution, but if anyone knows a particular technique good for calculating a high-res heightmap out of the already generated and smoothed terrain I would be very happy as I could look into it further when I know what I'm looking for.   Supose we have a very simple model: Station has at least one Train Train has at least two Stations The model has to allow to check what stations any given train visits and to check what trains visit a particular station. How to model it in Haskell? I am a Haskell newbie, so please correct me: once an object is created, you cannot modify it - you can only make a new object based on that one (~immutability). Am I right? If so, I'll have to create a lot of temporary variables with semi-initialized objects (during deserialization or even in unit tests). Basically what I need is an example of modeling domain classes in Haskell - after reading "Learn you a haskell.." I still have no idea how to use this language.
