  I m much of a newbie to client/server applications and networking.I am currently starting up a project in which we are planning to create an application or something like a website accessible only to clients in that LAN network.We want the server to upload videos so that the clients can view them whenever they want.Also the clients can upload videos.Also we want some kind of registration to provide authentication to avoid bogus videos.Also additional features that can be added on later like comment section,ratings,Groups etc. Basically what we want is to build mini-youtube but with one major difference , we want the application to be LAN based. This is the idea behind the project.But we dont know where to start from as we are new to this stuff and also we have like 1 year to work on the project.Please guide me as to what all softwares i'll be needing to get this working !

• Conventional Approaches for Passing Data to Back-End?

  Hi guys, I'm fairly new to web development, so please pardon the painfully newbie question that's about to follow. My computer science class group and I are developing a web application for class, which is built in Python (under Django) and uses jQuery on the front end. It's primarily an AJAX-ified application, and passing data from the backend to the front end is done through AJAX calls to specific URLs which return JSON. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the conventional approach for passing data in the opposite direction? We don't want to reload the page or anything, so is it an AJAX pass going the other way or something? Thanks in advance for your help!

• Single static HTML file: how can I serve it efficiently?

  Good afternoon. I have a domain and server that I've procured for non-HTML services. Should anyone stumble across port 80 of this server, I'd like to serve them a page explaining what the domain & server is for, instead of just 404'ing them. How can I serve one small, static, independent (i.e.: no images or CSS) HTML file, with a minimum of effort (meaning both a smooth setup for me, and minimum CPU expense). The server contains an untouched installation of ArchLinux, and I'm open to solutions in any language. • Should I uniform different API calls to a single format before caching?

  The problem is that I am recreating the social media widget/icons on http://about.me/bluedaniel (thats me). Anyhow there can be up to 6 or 7 different API calls on the page and obviously I am caching them, at the moment with Memcached. The question is, as they arrive in various formats and sizes (fb-json, linkedin-xml, wordpress-rss etc), should I universally format/convert them before storing it in the cache. At present I have recreated the html widget and then stored that, but I worry about saving huge blocks of html in the cache as it doesn't seem that smart.

• [Android] How do I load URL that requires login into variable?

  I am trying to port my usage meter from a JavaScript Gadget (win) / Widget (OSX) to Android. Total newbie when comes to JAVA + Eclipse + Android 2.1 SDK. Essentially what I want to do is load a page, pass through a username and password and load the resulting page into a array that I can then run some regular expressions through.   I need a function to find the shortest distance between two line segments. A line segment is defined by two endpoints. So for example one of my line segments (AB) would be defined by the two points A (x1,y1) and B (x2,y2) and the other (CD) would be defined by the two points C (x1,y1) and D (x2,y2). Feel free to write the solution in any language you want and I can translate it into javascript. Please keep in mind my geometry skills are pretty rusty.   Okay, so I'm admittedly a newbie to programming, but I can't determine how to get python v3.2 to generate a random positive integer between parameters I've given it. Just so you can understand the context, I'm trying to create a guessing-game where the user inputs parameters (say 1 to 50), and the computer generates a random number between the given numbers. The user would then have to guess the value that the computer has chosen. I've searched long and hard, but all of the solutions I can find only tell one how to get earlier versions of python to generate a random integer. As near as I can tell, v.3.2 changed how to generate and label a random integer. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

  Hello, I am trying to find any open source project based on Zend Framework. Something well written and as popular as Wordpress or Drupal to see actual benefits of ZF as well as possibly use it as an example. The only 'showcase' I managed to find is http://framework.zend.com/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=14134. But this list looks confusing as for the 'official' PHP framework. The same is about ZF statistics by numbers (http://framework.zend.com/about/numbers) - 10 million downloads against 400 actual projects which is less than 500 examples in the user guide... Also Yahoo chose Symfony for their bookmarks service not ZF... Am I missing something? Thank you!

  How do I use functions from a DLL? I'm a total newbie and I don't really understand how to use functions from a DLL file. I'm trying to use MS Visual Studio 2008 (C++). My understanding is that the DLL files will have corresponding header files and as long as I include the header files and call the functions normally in my code, it should work? Is that correct?   Can the object of type HttpSession called session be accessed from a function? In a simple jsp page I have a function(see below) defined in the header of the page, and set to an onclick handle of for a button. When I press this button, I'll never see the second alert message. If I do something in the body of the page (like Session ID: <%= session.getId() % ) I have no trouble accessing it. • Python programming. Accessing Windows rigth click menu options

  I'm hoping to automate a few tasks at work. One of them being combining and converting power point files to PDFs. I'm a bit of a newbie (I just finished Magus Heitland's Beginning Python), so I'm not entirely sure what I'm specifically asking. On windows, one can select multiple files, right click, and select combine as adobe PDF. I've figured out the 'grouping' of the files I want to convert (I traverse the dir and nest the files inside of a list based on their names), but I'm unsure how to pursue the next step (the rightclick/combine command). Googling has led me to things like win32api, pywinauto, and ctypes. But as I read over what they do my newbieness prevents me from knowing which is the tool I need. Could any one suggest a few good resources or tips?

  I Need to use nltk and numpy with Python. I am a newbie to Python and initially used the python 2.7.3 that came with my mac (currently running OSX 10.7.5). I learned that the apple version of python may not be robust so I downloaded the standard version from python.org. I have downloaded the nltk program for Mac OSX 10.7. This seemed to install fine. I am trying to download and install numpy using the instructions from the scipy website. http://www.scipy.org/Installing_SciPy/Mac_OS_X. I cloned numpy from github but when I tried to build it using the following command $ python setup.py build I received the following error MacOS/Python: can't open file 'setup.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory I also tried to build it using the scons command $ python setupscons.py scons --jobs=2 and received the following error /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Resources/Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python: can't open file 'setupscons.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory Can anyone think of a possible workaround?

• iPhone - a question about @property

  Hi, I am kind of newbie on Objective-C and I was looking at a code, trying to understand a few things, and I come across with this .h file: there was a declaration like that on the @interface section MyVideoClass *contrast_; then below we have @property (nonatomic, retain) MyVideoClass *contrast; @property (nonatomic, retain) FetchClass *fetchMe; The strange part is that the first has an underscrore after the name and the second one, doesn't. The other strange thing is that the guy has a call to these properties like this: FetchClass *fetchOne = [self.fetchMe contrast]; What kind of call is that? This seems pretty insane to me. I simply cannot understand what is going on here, but the code works. pretty insane. Can you guys explain me that? Forgive the stupid question, but I am still learning... thanks

• How to override browser default download behavior for files?

  Lots of times we have to download files from the net. In IE we get to see the ugly download progress bar. In firefox we get to see a pop-up window opening etc. However, I have never seen this being over ridden in any manner. Until recently on the site *thesixtyone DOT com* If we get to download a song free and click on the ok link to start the download we get a pop up to select location in the default style of windows.
