The problem is that I'm a student(feels like always on learning stage) but sometimes i can't solve the problems by my own. I was thinking that on public open source repositories might be the answer I'm looking for. My question is how can i find the answer to some of my problems in open source projects/community? • Will be self-taught limit me?

  I'm 21 and am pretty efficient in html/css, python, and javascript. I also know my way around lisp languages and enjoy programing in them. My problem is that I'm extremely self-taught and not quite confident that I could land a job programing, but I really need a job soon as I've just become a father. I haven't even created a resume yet because I'm not really sure what to put on it except my lone experience. So I wanted to ask, will being primarily self-taught with some experience on small projects I've done for a few clients limit me too much? I mean I know I need some kind of education so I've enrolled part time in a community college to work on a degree in computer science, but it's years till then. And if it will limit me a lot, what kind of skills would be good to work on to make my chances any better? Thank You

  I need to store large amount of small data objects (millions of rows per month). Once they're saved they wont change. I need to : store them securely use them to analysis (mostly time-oriented) retrieve some raw data occasionally It would be nice if it could be used with JasperReports or BIRT My first shot was Infobright Community - just a column-oriented, read-only storing mechanism for MySQL On the other hand, people says that NoSQL approach could be better. Hadoop+Hive looks promissing, but the documentation looks poor and the version number is less than 1.0 . I heard about Hypertable, Pentaho, MongoDB .... Do you have any recommendations ? (Yes, I found some topics here, but it was year or two ago)

• The reasons to upgrade from Delphi 2009

  I have made the question "community wiki" - it is subjective. I have upgraded to Delphi 2009 because of unicode support. I have found the anonymous methods a very interesting and useful language feature, I can't say the same about generics. The generics seemed important for me before the upgrade to Delphi 2009, but I have never used them and probably will never use. As for Delphi 2010, I don't need the attributes and I don't like the whole idea of extended RTTI - that is why Delphi 2009 is better for me. Sometimes I hit one or other annoying bug in Delphi 2009 IDE, but they are not critical and I can live with them. I have no plans to develop software for Mac or Linux. Sure sometime I will need 64-bit support, so I think about upgrading to Delphi 2012. Are where any more reasons that can force me to upgrade from Delphi 2009?

  Why is C# suddenly so popular? There's been like a repeat explosion in the blogs lately about it; It reminds me of the earlier part of this decade when all of those frameworks for Java came out like Spring, JSF, Hibernate, Struts, Struts2, Tapestry etc... I've actually been thinking about learning C#, and it seems to contain a lot of qualities that it has gotten from Java (aside from it being completely cross-platform) But, it almost seems like a step backwards to me...its not totally multi-platform, a language that's run by a corporation rather than a community... (But, knowing this isn't the case, I've come here to find out why it isn't...) P.S. And yes, I am aware of the Mono project so that you can run it on Linux, but isn't it always behind the curve? A new version of Java would be supported on all the platforms.

• Integrating GSL onto iPhone Xcode

  I have been trying to integrate GSL (Gnu Scientific Library) into an iPhone project using Xcode. The challenge is GSL has all the modules in different folders, yet when their header files are reference, they often reference instead of or . At least with I could use Xcode's recursive header file search to find it. But with , basically file not found. Does anyone have an easy way to address the hierarchical GSL structure to compile into Xcode? I can do it the tedious way of fixing all the #INCLUDE lines but hoping there is a better alternative. This way, I can more easily update GSL when changes are made by the community. NOTE: I found Xcode needs to find the right header file locations (make sure to adjust your TARGET Build settings, not just your Project Build settings).

  In this question the OP implies that he wants to base the blog system he is developing on automatic creation of .aspx files, one for each new blog entry. In my answer to his question (which is related to something else), I told him that I would discourage him from using such an approach, but without giving any real reasons. He is now wanting reasons why it is not a good idea, and I'm using this question to see if the community can come up with a compelling enough list of reasons for him to use another approach, such as one using a dbms, code-reuse, url-rewriting, MVC, and what not.

• solution on SP and EF & Ria Service

  As EF 4.0 released, more support to SQL server Stored procedure. Complex Type can be generated automatically for result dataset of SP. But complex type not support by Ria Service. When I try to use ria service combined with EF 4.0, I want to get dataset by SP. This result is not mapped to any entity/table. Some sulutions suggested by community are: 1. Create view to map sp result. (but for EF, if there is no ID or primary, can't be map to any entity) 2. Create Entity to map sp result.(for this, you even need to map SP for CRUD even though I don't need CUD on this sp result) Also above solution can't be automated. As Database objects maybe changed with the time, auto update edm will lost above solution. So what's the solution? I want to put data operation back to DB as possible, so that many changes can be done in DB and no need to rebuild .net assemblies(this cause redeploy).

  I need to decide on which one to use. My case is pretty simple. I need to convert a simple POJO/Bean to XML, and then back. Nothing special. One thing I am looking for is it should include the parent properties as well. Best would be if it can work on super type, which can be just a marker interface. If anyone can compare these two with cons and pros, and which thing is missing in which one. I know that XStream supports JSON too, thats a plus. But Simple looked simpler in a glance, if we set JSON aside. Whats the future of Simple in terms of development and community? XStream is quite popular I believe, even the word, "XStream", hit many threads on SO. Thanks.

• ETL mechanisms for MySQL to SQL Server over WAN

  I’m looking for some feedback on mechanisms to batch data from MySQL Community Server 5.1.32 with an external host down to an internal SQL Server 05 Enterprise machine over VPN. The external box accumulates data throughout business hours (about 100Mb per day), which then needs to be transferred internationally across a WAN connection to an internal corporate environment before some BI work is performed. This should just be change-sets making their way down each night. I’m interested in thoughts on the ETL mechanisms people have successfully used in similar scenarios before. SSIS seems like a potential candidate; can anyone comment on the suitability for this scenario? Alternatively, other thoughts on how to do this in a cost-conscious way would be most appreciated. • What would you recommend to do simple 2D Graphics?

  I want to build a program that will (as part of what it's doing) display lines organically growing and interacting horizontally across the screen. Here's a sample image, just imagine the lines sprouting from the left and growing to the right: The lines would look like the lines used on Google Maps Transit Overlay or OnNYTurf's transit pages. It's a personal project, so I'm open to just about any language and library combination. But I don't know where to start. What have you used in the past to create graphics that are similar to this? What would you recommend? I want it to run on Windows without any extras needed (.Net is fine), and it doesn't have to run elsewhere. I needs to run as an actual program, not javascript in the browser. There's obviously no 'right' answer to this, but the purpose isn't to start an argument about X better than Y but rather just find a list of graphics toolkits that do simple 2D graphics that people recommend because of their ease of use or community or whatever.

• Is it possible to "merge" the values of multiple records into a single field without using a stored

  A co-worker posed this question to me, and I told them, "No, you'll need to write a sproc for that". But I thought I'd give them a chance and put this out to the community. Essentially, they have a table with keys mapping to multiple values. For a report, they want to aggregate on the key and "mash" all of the values into a single field. Here's a visual: --- ------- Key Value --- ------- 1 A 1 B 1 C 2 X 2 Y The result would be as follows: --- ------- Key Value --- ------- 1 A,B,C 2 X,Y They need this in SQLServer 2005. Again, I think they need to write a stored procedure, but if anyone knows a magic out-of-the-box function that does this, I'd be impressed.

• How can I find which process has opened a specific file?

  How can I find which processes have a specific file opened, and their open, access and share modes? Additionally, is it possible to change these values for a process? Or is it even possible to open a file for reading if it is already opened for exclusive access by another process? Please note that I don't want to invalidate the handle of the process having the file opened. I just want to be able to access the file (if possible). (I'm mainly asking about Windows, but solutions for other platforms are welcome, since they contribute to the community's knowledge.) Edit: I found some answers for my first question here and there. • Eclipse and Actionscript 3

  Does anyone know of any good solutions (Eclipse plugins presumably) for using Eclipse to develop in ActionScript 3? There are a number of solutions for developing with ActionScript 2, leveraging MTASC, Swfmill and other open source tools, but I'm specifically looking for AS3 support. It's simple enough to use Eclipse as an editor, and a place from which to invoke Ant scripts to compile with the Adobe command line tools, but I'm looking for syntax colouring, autocompletion, refactoring, debugging - all the modern IDE luxuries. Other tool I've used: FlashDevelop: free and good, but Windows only and doesn't have refactoring. Nevertheless a nice piece of work. IntelliJ Idea: very nice ActionScript 3 support, though not quite as slick as their Java support. Unfortunately AS3 is not supported in the free/community edition of Idea and I'm not ready to purchase the full version as yet.

• What technical/legal responsibilities do I have when hosting images uploaded by others?

  You may argue that this question has a legal flavor to it, and that would be correct. Still, it is also a question from a developer's perspective that may help others. I'm building an image community web site/application. Users can upload images. During upload, users have to select the license (copyrighted, attribution non-commercial or public domain). No matter which license they choose, it is just a piece of data. No matter the license, all users can view all images and also download all images, as you normally do on websites. My question is: what responsibility do I have as a "platform" to comply with these licenses? Do I need to actively prevent certain actions on these images, and into what extend? Is displaying the license enough to be legally safe? What if one of my users uploads images for which he has no license? Is it enough to just implement a "report this" feature?

  This question was posted by a C beginner and it was an exercise to calculate, given a dollar value input by the user, the minimum number of bills (or banknotes, depending on your locale) needed to reach that dollar value.   Hi All, I am working on a rake utility and want to implement something mentioned below: There are some shell commands in a sequence in my Rake file. What I want is that the sequence should wait for the previous command to finish processing before it moves to the next one. sh "git commit -m \"#{args.commit_message}\"" do |ok, res| # Do some processing end sh "git push heroku master" So, in the above example what I want is that sh "git push heroku master" shouldn't be executed until the processing in the sh "git commit -m \"#{args.commit_message}\"" do |ok, res| # Do some processing end is completed. Also another nice to have would be that if I can store the output of the shell command in a Ruby variable so it can be used in further manipulation if required. • Space-based architecture?

  One chapter in Pragmatic Programmer recommends looking at a blackboard/space-based architecture + a rules engine as a more flexible alternative to a traditional workflow system. The project I'm working on currently uses a workflow engine, but I'd like to evaluate alternatives. I really feel like a SBA would be a better solution to our business problems, but I'm worried about a total lack of community support/user base/venders/options. JavaSpaces is dead, and the JINI spin-off Apache River seems to be on life support. SemiSpace looks perfect, but it's a one-man show. The only viable solution seems to be GigaSpaces. I'd like to hear your thoughts on space based architecture and any experiences you've had with real world implementations.

• Two fields with the same name

  I have a ViewModel class to encapsulate "Personal" and "Business" models. My problem is that both models have a property called "Email" and the model binding is not able to make a distinction between the too. I read that [Bind(Prefix = ... is used to resolved this issue, but I have not been able to see a concise example on how to achieve this. • Will Delphi be there in future ?

I know Delphi has a big community since years (10 plus)and I believe you could create native windows exe before Visual Basic got to speed (with all its dll's nighmare). But is it future-proof ? Is there a need or market for a non-crossplatform native all-in-one executable ? Will Embarcardero ex Codegear ex Borland continue to push it ? Why is it so expensive ? Who (non company) can afford it, in order to learn it ?
