• Getting latest Subsonic builds

  I need the latest Subsonic build or build it by my own. Subsonic project web site shows the latest available version is Subsonic v3.0.0.3 released at July 15, 2009. Questions: Are there any later builds - e.g. maintained by community members? If so, how can I get the latest one? In worst case I'm ready to get the latest source code and try to build it by my own. Are there any instructions for this? Please note, that I'm not interested in almost 1 year old builds - I need a build based on the latest code for tests (LINQ, performance), ideally - compiled for .NET 4.0.

• C# - How to make a custom installer for games, etc?

  Hello. Can anyone tell me how to create a custom installer to 'install' games. I say custom meaning I don't want the user to have the option where the game is installed. I want it to be a straight forward process, maybe with just one loading bar. The program I'm developing is a 'center' for game playing, which includes a community and other features, such as a timer that records how long a game is played for. I just thought that installing each game in one place, with a simple installer would make the program easier to use. It also will allow me to do other features as the games will all be installed in one place. No need for the user to specify where the game is installed. Would this be possible? Thanks.

• Opinions about the current and future state of Dabo

  Has anyone used Dabo lately? How does it rate vs Boa Constructor, etc? I'm writing a new Python database app and Dabo looks promising, but what's the real-world scoop on it? Is it used by many developers? It's not talked about very much here on SO, or anywhere, as far as I can tell. I'm just a little concerned that the support community might be too small, or the possibility that writers might decide to throw in the towel. What are your opinions of Dabo?

  I'm building a community website (not WoW related) and am curious what, if any, framework(s) Wowhead may use. The general, non-WoW specific functions of the site are near identical to what I need. A few of the features I'm interested in are: Item page comments User/Account management Forums Blog Content Management Search box suggestion I'm sure allot of their site is custom built but I assume that some portions may be third-party solutions, like the forums and blog. • How to keep code maintainable after original programmer quit

  Say if it's a 10 people project, 2-3 of the original programmer quit after the project has been release a stable version for a while. How to have the code maintainable in this case? My imagination is reviewing the code after the project goes to release version and keep review it afterwards? Maybe split into 2-3 small groups and have each group review part of the code. So at least 3-4 people are familiar with part of code. Does this work? How do companies deal with this issue? Usually how many percentage of time spent on reviewing the code? Please advise, thanks to community.

• Morfik - suitability for medium-scale web enterprise applications

  I'm investigating technologies with which to develop a medium-scale (up to 100 or 200 simultaneous users) database-driven web application, and someone suggested Morfik. However, outside of the Morfik company I can find practically zero community support - no active blogs, no tutorials, no videos, no books - and this is of some concern (especially when compared to C# / ASP.NET / nHibernate etc support). Deciding between Morfik (untried and not used widely AFAIK) and the other technologies I mentioned (tried, tested, used widely) is becoming a critical issue for my company. Has anyone had success using Morfik in these kind of circumstances? What kind of performance did you achieve?

  I'm having this problem only on Motorola Milestone. • Why is silverlight so slow? (Especially when compared to Flash)

  I hope I don't have to explain what is Silverlight to SO community. Anyway TemplateMonster.com has recently released new Silverlight themes that have been ported from Flash. Silverlight Templates | Template Monster I've noticed a significant lag on my Macbook Pro 13" in loading the template page in Silverlight. And not just Template Monster templates but other silverlight applications on the web as well. Now why is that? I've been hearing how great Silverlight is and how it's a great business platform blah blah blah. And now Microsoft plans to build Windows Phone 7 on top of Silverlight framework. As much as I want to praise Silverlight, so far it's been nothing but a disappointment to me. Could someone enlighten me, what is so great about Silverlight, and why should I put up with that starting up lag? Silverlight was really next up on my "stuff to learn" list this summer, but now I am not so sure...

• Is it ok to put any existing open-source project into github?

  This question is more about Open-Source etiquette, and the new approach that the likes of github and gitorious gives to collaboration and source ownership. Can you just take any Open-Source project from somewhere else (e.g SourceForge, with a clear project team and community) and put it into your own github repository, provided that you respect the terms of the original license? And if yes, do you keep your version under the same name, or change it? I somehow have this nagging feeling that this is rude, and yet it is open-source after all...

I heard from the community that before diving into driver development one must be familiar with windows internals that means one must read "Windows Internals by Mark Russinovich. I'm going to buy this book today. Which edtition should I buy? 4th edition covers Windows XP & Windows 2003 where as 5th edition covers Windows Vista & windows server 2008. I don't know in driver world how much difference this thing would make. How different are these two editions? should I first read 4th edition & then come to 5th or should I directly dive into 5th?

• Element point map for html5 canvas element, need algorithm

  I'm currently working on a pure html 5 canvas implementation of the "flying tag cloud sphere", which many of you have undoubtedly seen as a flash object in some pages. The tags are drawn fine, and the performance is satisfactory, but there's one thing in the canvas element that's kind of breaking this idea: you can't identify the objects that you've drawn on a canvas, as it's just a simple flat "image".. What I have to do in this case is catch the click event, and try to "guess" which element was clicked. So I have to have some kind of matrix, which stores a link to a tag object for each pixel on the canvas, AND I have to update this matrix on every redraw. Now this sounds incredibly inefficient, and before I even start trying to implement this, I want to ask the community - is there some "well known" algorithm that would help me in this case? Or maybe I'm just missing something, and the answer is right behind the corner? :)

• Why do open source projects cling on 0.x versions for too long?

  I see many open source projects insist on staying in 0.xxx version for a very long time despite that the product has been proven useful and very stable. Trac is one example. They even risked switching from 0.9 to 0.10 which might confuse a lot of users about which is more recent. I wonder if this is a cultural paradigm, an honor code in open source community or simply a strict interpretation of release cycle management? Would a person who releases first version as "1.0 beta" be banished from open source world, or more realistically appeal less number of contributors? For some projects it even looks like they will never switch to 1.0 ever but only approximating only half way each time, like Zeno's paradox.

• Any foundation to administrate an Android open source application?

  Our open source application is quite popular, and we are many developers. The app uses my Android Market account, and I shared the keys with a developer. But if both of us disappear, the application's Market account will be lost, and all users trapped. Giving the keys to all developers is not a solution either, for security reasons. Is there a foundation (like in Mozilla Foundation or Apache Foundation) that could accept to hold our Android Market account and release new versions in accordance with their own guidelines and our community consensus? There are quite a lot of Open Source foundations, but I could not find any that tackles this particular aspect of Android applications.

• fubar'd a ruby installation on ubuntu, need helping purging it for reinstall

  i originally followed these steps to get a RoR environmentgoing: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RubyOnRails that worked. then i put 1.9.2 on here. then i decided i want the original setup, did a "whereis ruby" and deleted those directories manually. that fubar'd my ruby installation. i can't use the repository to what i originally had. how can i purge ruby from completely and start fresh? right now the specific error is this: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:11:in `require': no such file to load -- thread (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:11 from /usr/bin/gem1.8:8:in `require' from /usr/bin/gem1.8:8 tipu@tipu_ubuntu:~$

• Can't figure out how to code my css

  Hi, I'm a new poster in stackoverflow. The community seems really nice so I'll go ahead and post my question. I'm trying to style a asp.net MVC2 form so that instead of having all the fields on a strait line, I would like to have it like so: Label: Text field Label: Text field I know you could do that with a table but I would like to use CSS to accomplish that. I know a little bit about css but not enough to figure out what to do. The only thing I came close to was to but my fields as a unorder list then styling the li item. Thank you for your help!

• Rails migrations: Undo default setting for a column

  Hi Stack Overflow Community! I have the problem, that I have an migration in Rails that sets up a default setting for a column, like this example: def self.up add_column :column_name, :bought_at, :datetime, :default => Time.now end Suppose, I like to drop that default settings in a later migration, how do I do that with using rails migrations? My current workaround is the execution of a custom sql command in the rails migration, like this: def self.up execute 'alter table column_name alter bought_at drop default' end But I don't like this approach, because I am now dependent on how the underlying database is interpreting this command. In case of a change of the database this query perhaps might not work anymore and the migration would be broken. So, is there a way to express the undo of a default setting for a column in rails?   Hi SO community! I am drawing graphs into a WinForms Picturebox. Now I am searching for a possibility to 'duplicate' a line (an array of points), so that the two resulting lines are positioned a fixed distance away from the original one. Like in this picture, I have the red line and want to get the black ones: I thought about just moving the line a few pixels up/right/up-right, but that leads to strange overlapping lines. Is there any other approach that does what I want? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm beginning development of a website and a high priority is for it to be extremely optimized, quick responses, etc. There will ultimately end up being large amounts of rows in the main tables (millions), so scalability is also important. It will need to use a database on the back-end for data storage and my web hosting service supports either MySQL or Sql Server. This website will be developed with .NET ASP.NET MVC with NHibernate (hopefully it can run in medium trust mode, as that is a requirement of my web hosting and reflection requirements of NHibernate may be problematic, maybe someone has a comment on this too). I'd also prefer to use the database that will require the least attention in regards to management. I don't want to have to be a DBA here. :) I wanted to through this topic out to the public to see what the community thinks? So MySQL or Sql Server, generally, which one would be better to use?

• Learning Python coming from PHP

  Community wiki so don't vote to close, kthxbai. My dynamic language experience is solely PHP. I want to learn Python now to broaden my career opportunities and just because I like programming. :) When learning Java, I used a site (lost the URL/real name now), something like "Java for PHP developers" that had all on one side of the page the PHP code, and on the other side the Java code to do the same thing.   I'm interested in learning more about design practices in PHP for Database Abstraction & Factory methods. For background, my site is a common-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. However, I do feel like I'm limiting myself by keeping a lot of SQL table names and structure separated in each function/method. Questions: Is there a reason to use PEAR (or similar) if I dont anticipate switching databases? Can PEAR interface with the MySqli prepared statements I currently use? Will it help me separate table names from each method? (If no, what other design patterns might I want to research?) Will it slow down my site once I have a significantly large member base?
