• dpkg error when using apt-get install

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 from 12.04 and every time I use apt-get install for any package it ends with a bunch of errors about processing some of my latex packages. Including a snippet below: Sometimes, not accepting conffile updates in /etc/texmf/updmap.d causes updmap-sys to fail. Please check for files with extension .dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory dpkg: error processing package tex-common (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of lmodern: lmodern depends on tex-common (>= 3); however: Package tex-common is not configured yet. • How to install nvidia drivers (GT 440 ) on Xubuntu 12.10 , screen res gone to 640x480 :(

  Hi all after days of endless googling I finally gave in and decided to try and directly ask for help. I have just installed Xubuntu and updated to 12.10 on a pretty old (12 years) machine, and I am now struggling to install the correct drivers for the nvidia 440 gt card.. I have managed to get "additional drivers" but the app does not show in the menu, I went through a few procedures which ended up in my screen going no higher than 640x480, and tried all the sudo apt-get variations with nvidia-current and current updates... I think I got the right version of the drivers ( 93.43.07 ) but they won't install from terminal as they say I am running an X server. So I learnt how to shut the graphic interface but then I try and install them from there but after I write the exact same command (sudo home/username/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run ) nothing happens and the terminal says something like command not found. I am desperate for help if anybody could point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. There are lots of similar topics on installing nvidia drivers but I seem to understand that current drivers are no good for my old GPU. So if anybody could show me how to install the right version that would be excellent. Thanks in advance! Jack

• GNOME changes to KDE on Maverick

  Hi, I recently made a clean/fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 an experienced the problem that the theme changes from Gnome to KDE and back randomly and partly. Sometimes after starting my computer I will have a KDE theme. If I then open the Appearance Preferences ( System - Preferences - Appearance ) some applications and the main-menu as well as menu of applications (only upper two centimetres of a application window) will change back to Gnome only by opening it, not changing anything nor saving. I did not choose KDE at any time, nor did I do any changes to the appearance prior to the first occurrence of this bug. On a second computer I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 and experienced the same bug. On this computer I did however change the layout of the minimize;maximise;close buttons by following How do I move the Window buttons from left to right?. But I don't see how this could provoke the bug, especially as it occurs on a second computer. Will doing updates I saw that there a quite a lot of KDE packages being downloaded. Do I even need those if I don't want to use KDE?

• Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

  One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. Scott Guthrie also posted about some other notable changes today, including a preview of a new premium offering for SQL Database. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. • All my Ubuntu VMs have apt-get update problems

  I'm running Virtualbox 4.1 on an x86_64 Windows 7 host. I've got a collection of 12.04 and 10.04 LTS VMs I use to create debs for work. In the last week I started noticing problems on the 12.04 VMs. Tried the usual apt-get clean bit which didn't help. I rolled a new 11.10 VM for testing a Worpress upgrade. This VM has never been able to run apt-get update without errors. • June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice. Oracle just released the June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE.  This Critical Patch Update provides 14 new security fixes across Java SE products.  As discussed in previous blog entries, Critical Patch Updates for Java SE will, for the foreseeable future, continue to be released on a separate schedule than that of other Oracle products due to previous commitments made to Java customers.  12 of the 14 Java SE vulnerabilities fixed in this Critical Patch Update may be remotely exploitable without authentication.  6 of these vulnerabilities have a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  In accordance with Oracle’s policies, these CVSS 10 scores represent instances where a user running a Java applet or Java Web Start application has administrator privileges (as is typical on Windows XP).  When the user does not run with administrator privileges (typical on the Solaris and Linux operating systems), the corresponding CVSS impact scores for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability for these vulnerabilities would be "Partial" instead of "Complete", thus lowering these CVSS Base Scores to 7.5. Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers obtain and apply these security fixes as soon as possible: Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html    Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course  Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release. • Ubuntu 12.04 nomodeset fixes boot problem but causes screen resolution to get stuck

  I've been searching the askubuntu forum for the past 3 days trying to figure out what's going on with my system and I have tried a lot of things but to no avail. So, I will explain my situation and tell you what I have tried and I hope someone can help me :) I have an: HP Workstation xw4100 Pentium(R) 4 3.00 GHz 1.5 GB RAM NVIDIA Quadro4 380 XGL graphics card It came with Windows XP and I set it up (with WUBI) to dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 After installation I had the problem that so many people had with it booting to a black screen (mine was actually booting to the terminal basic shell) that is fixed by adding nomodeset into the grub. When I do that, MY screen resolution becomes stuck in 1280x768 (as opposed to 1366x768 before adding nomodeset) (and also, when running XP the best resolution is 1280x720) When I go to "additional drivers" it doesn't show any proprietary drivers, so I manually downloaded them using this command: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current but after rebooting, that made the graphics even worse (now stuck as 800x600) SO I tried to configure the drivers with sudo nvidia-xconfig but that simply created an empty xorg.config file. I found one place where a guy gave information to manually input into the xorg.config file but that had no effect at all. Lastly I tried to install previous versions of the NVIDIA drivers, but they wouldn't even fully install. So now I have just re-installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I either need to find a better solution to the first problem (nomodeset) or get the nouveau driver to correctly configure to work with my nvidia graphics. • Is there an excuse for short variable names?

  This has become a large frustration with the codebase I'm currently working in; many of our variable names are short and undescriptive. I'm the only developer left on the project, and there isn't documentation as to what most of them do, so I have to spend extra time tracking down what they represent. For example, I was reading over some code that updates the definition of an optical surface. The variables set at the start were as follows: double dR, dCV, dK, dDin, dDout, dRin, dRout dR = Convert.ToDouble(_tblAsphere.Rows[0].ItemArray.GetValue(1)); dCV = convert.ToDouble(_tblAsphere.Rows[1].ItemArray.GetValue(1)); ... and so on Maybe it's just me, but it told me essentially nothing about what they represented, which made understanding the code further down difficult. All I knew was that it was a variable parsed out specific row from a specific table, somewhere. After some searching, I found out what they meant: dR = radius dCV = curvature dK = conic constant dDin = inner aperture dDout = outer aperture dRin = inner radius dRout = outer radius I renamed them to essentially what I have up there. It lengthens some lines, but I feel like that's a fair trade off. This kind of naming scheme is used throughout a lot of the code however. I'm not sure if it's an artifact from developers who learned by working with older systems, or if there's a deeper reason behind it. Is there a good reason to name variables this way, or am I justified in updating them to more descriptive names as I come across them?

• Ubuntu stops using Nvidia driver after kernel upgrade

  Just updated and restarted, Ubuntu's doesn't display correctly. After restart, the desktop now looks like this. I've temporarily switched to the Nouveau driver. The update history reveals the kernel was updated, amongst many things; and the following were installed: linux-image-3.5.0-19-generic (3.5.0-19.30) linux-image-extra-3.5.0-19-generic (3.5.0-19.30) I've encountered this type of problem quite recently, so I decided to reapply the same steps, to solve the problem, as follows: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-19 sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.5.0-19-generic sudo depmod -a sudo modprobe nvidia sudo /etc/init.d/*dm restart When installing linux-headers-3.5.0-19-generic, I get an error, message from terminal as follows: Setting up linux-headers-3.5.0-19-generic (3.5.0-19.30) ... Examining /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d. run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms 3.5.0-19-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-19-generic Error! Problems with depmod detected. Automatically uninstalling this module. DKMS: Install Failed (depmod problems). Module rolled back to built state. However, I ignored the above error and continued the steps with sudo depmod -a, installed nvidia-current, then did sudo modprobe nvidia, which yielded the following error: FATAL: Error inserting nvidia_current (/lib/modules/3.5.0-19-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia_current.ko): No such device Upon restart, the Nvidia driver now works! BTW, do those error messages imply I broke something? Just curious, cause I don't want to get happy I've fixed it, then it stops working later on. The system is Dell XPS-L702X, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M, and 17" screen.

• What is the point of dynamic allocation in C++?

  I really have never understood it at all. I can do it, but I just don't get why I would want to. For instance, I was programming a game yesterday, and I set up an array of pointers to dynamically allocated little enemies in the game, then passed it to a function which updates their positions. When I ran the game, I got one of those nondescript assertion errors, something about a memory block not existing, I don't know. It was a run-time error, so it didn't say where the problem was. So I just said screw it and rewrote it with static instantiation, i.e.: while(n<4) { Enemy tempEnemy = Enemy(3, 4); enemyVector.push_back(tempEnemy); n++; } updatePositions(&enemyVector); And it immediately worked perfectly. Now sure, some of you may be thinking something to the effect of "Maybe if you knew what you were doing," or perhaps "n00b can't use pointers L0L," but frankly, you really can't deny that they make things way overcomplicated, hence most modern languages have done away with them entirely. But please-- someone -- What IS the point of dynamic allocation? What advantage does it afford? Why would I ever not do what I just did in the above example?

• apt-cacher ng / upgrade fails from client

  I'm running apt-cacher ng on an Ubuntu Hardy server and try to upgrade the packages on a Natty client (which was initially a Maverick). I didn't do anything on the server. On the client I tried two setups. I configure APT to use a http-proxy. On the client I did a "apt-get update" which worked fine, but very slowly. In the acng-report.html I see an entry, which seems to be correct. After verifying Install these packages without verification [y/N]? y "apt-get upgrade" failes with the message: Err http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main libnux-0.9-common all 0.9.48-0ubuntu1.1 503 Name or service not known The GUI update manager fails as well with the message, that untrusted packages will be installed. I edit sources.list and add the server in the correct format to all sources. "apt-get update" is very slowly... and I get a lot of errors like this: W: Failed to fetch http://[::ffff:10.10.10.10]:3142/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/binary-i386/Packages 403 Forbidden file type or location After that "apt-get upgrade" says: 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. What could be wrong? Is it possible to use apt-cacher ng on an older system for upgrading newer systems? Thank you in advance!

• Most effective way to do daily standup meeting when a few people are remote

  I am a software developer in a small team of seven. We are not an Agile (with a big 'A') team but are experimenting with some aspects of agile. One of these is the daily "standup" meeting. The difficulty here is that for two days of the week we have at least one person working from home so the full team isn't available in the same room. What is the best way to carry out a daily standup in this situation? Some facts that may be relevant: We all work in a single open plan room. We use Skype in our company. We don't have any video conferencing capability. We all work the same hours so there are no timezone complexities involved. The development manager is one of the people who works from home one day a week. Things we have tried: Conference call using Skype: This is tricky for those in the office because you can hear people speak in the room and then a split second later through the headset. This can e very distracting. Conference phone: Awful experience. Hard to get them to work and poor quality audio. Text-based updates using Skype. This is not as engaging and is no different than just firing off a status email in the morning. I have seen other questions about remote collaboration but they are mainly about completely remote teams and/or teams that span multiple time zones. We are not affected by either of these problems. What can we do to make our standup meetings better in these circumstances?

It lengthens some lines, but I feel like that's a fair trade off. This kind of naming scheme is used throughout a lot of the code however. I'm not sure if it's an artifact from developers who learned by working with older systems, or if there's a deeper reason behind it. Is there a good reason to name variables this way, or am I justified in updating them to more descriptive names as I come across them?

• How do I convince my boss that it's OK to use an application to access an outside website?

  That is, if you agree that it's OK. We have a need to maintain an accurate internal record of bank routing numbers, and my boss wants me to set up a process where once a week someone goes to the Federal Reserve's website, clicks on the link to get the list of routing numbers (or the link giving the updates since a particular date), and then manually uploads the resultant text file to an application that will make the update to our data. I told him that a manual process was not at all necessary, and that I could write a routine that would access the FED's routing numbers in the application that keeps our data updated, and put it on whatever schedule was appropriate. But he is greatly opposed to doing this, and calls it "hacking the Federal Reserve website." I think he's afraid that the FED is going to get after us. I showed him the FED's robot.txt file, and the only thing it forbids is an automated indexing of pages with extension .cf*: User-agent: * # applies to all robots Disallow: CF # disallow indexing of all CF* directories and pages This says nothing about accessing the same data automatically that you could access manually. Anyone have a good counterargument to the idea that we'd be "hacking" the FED?

  Once again, it was a tweet that caught my attention... and the official description on the Play Store sounds good, too. "In Monument Valley you will manipulate impossible architecture and guide a silent princess through a stunningly beautiful world. Monument Valley is a surreal exploration through fantastical architecture and impossible geometry. Guide the silent princess Ida through mysterious monuments, uncovering hidden paths, unfolding optical illusions and outsmarting the enigmatic Crow People." So, let's check it out. What an interesting puzzle game Once again, I left some review on the Play Store: "Beautiful but short distraction Woohoo, what a great story behind the game. Using optical illusions and impossible geometries in this fantastic adventure of the silent princess just puts all the pieces perfectly together. Walking the amazing paths in the various levels and solving the riddles gives some decent hours of distraction but in the end you might have the urge to do more..." I can't remember exactly when and who tweeted about the game but honestly it caught my attention based on the simplicity of the design and the aspect that it seems to be an isometric design. The game relies heavily on optical illusions in order to guide to the silent princess Ida through her illusory adventure of impossible architecture and forgiveness. The game is set like a clockwork and you are turning, flipping and switching elements on the paths between the doors. Unfortunately, there aren't many levels and the game play lasted only some hours. Maybe there are more astonishing looking realms and interesting gimmicks in future versions. • Consolidating multiple domain names

  I have a client that has three separately hosted copies of their website, each on a separate domain name. The websites are all essentially the same, bar a few discrepancies caused by badly managed updates in the past. I will soon be launching a completely new website for them, at which point, all three domain names are to resolve to the same web server. One domain name will become the default domain name that they refer to in all their literature, and the other two will simply be used as catch-alls for old links, bookmarks, and so on. I would like to know what people consider the best route to achieve this. My plan so far is: Get the new site up and running on the new webserver. Change the relevant A record of the default domain name to point to the new webserver. a) Keep the existing hosting accounts in operation. Create a list of 301 redirects from old page names on the old site to new page names on the new site. or b) Configure CNAME records for the non-default domain names, each pointing to the new webserver. Create a list of 301 redirects on the new site that redirect from old page names to new page names. If my understanding is correct, 3a will help to maintain whatever search engine rankings the sites already have (I know it's not going to be perfect), while at the same time informing search engines that the old domain names are no longer in use. What's a good approach to take here?

• Player sprite moving slower on iPhone 4

  I just finished getting movement/jump animation for a player sprite in Xcode using Cocos2D. The basic movement algorithm is a timer that updates every 0.01 sec, changing the sprite position to (sprite.position.x + xVel, sprite.position.y + yVel). Each time a movement button is tapped, the appropriate velocity (initialized to 0) is changed to whatever speed I choose, then a stop movement button returns the velocity to 0. It's not an ideal solution but I'm very new at this and stoked to at least have that working with little help from the internet. So I may not have explained that perfectly, but it is in fact working to my satisfaction in Xcode's iPhone Simulator, however when I build it for my device and run it on my phone, the sprite's movement speed is noticeably slower than in Xcode. At first I thought it must have to do with the resolution of the iPhone 4, making the sprite's movement path twice as long, but I found that if I pull up the multitask bar, then return to the app the speed will sometimes jump back to normal. My second theory was that the code is just inefficient and is bogging the processes down, but I would see this reflected in the frame rate wouldn't I? It stays at 59-60 the whole time, and the spritesheet animation runs at the correct speed. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a really obvious issue that I'm completely missing? Any help (or tips for optimizing my approach to movement) would be much appreciated!

• Advice on developing a social network [on hold]

  I am doing research on assembling a team, using the right tools, and the cost to develop a highly responsive social network that is capable of dealing with a lot of users. Similar to the Facebook concept but using the basics package for now. Profile, friends, posts, updates, media upload/download, streaming, chat and Inbox messaging are all in the package. We certainly do not expect it to be as popular as Facebook or handle the same number of users and requests, but in its own game it has to be a monster, and expandable for later on. Neglecting the hosting, and servers part, i am looking for technical advise and opinions, on what kind of team i need ? how many developers ? their expertise ? What are the right tools ? languages ? frameworks ? environments ? Any random ideas about the infrastructure ? Quick thoughts on the development process ? Please use references, if you have any to support your ideas. Development cost mere estimation ? • The overlooked OUTPUT clause

  I often find myself applying ad-hoc data updates to production systems – usually running scripts written by other people. One of my favourite features of SQL syntax is the OUTPUT clause – I find this is rarely used, and I often wonder if this is due to a lack of awareness of this feature.. The OUTPUT clause was added to SQL Server in the SQL 2005 release – so has been around for quite a while now, yet I often see scripts like this… SELECT somevalue FROM sometable WHERE keyval = XXX UPDATE sometable SET somevalue = newvalue WHERE keyval = XXX -- now check the update has worked… SELECT somevalue FROM sometable WHERE keyval = XXX This can be rewritten to achieve the same end-result using the OUTPUT clause. UPDATE sometable SET somevalue = newvalue OUTPUT deleted.somevalue AS ‘old value’,              inserted.somevalue AS ‘new value’ WHERE keyval = XXX The Update statement with output clause also requires less IO - ie I've replaced three SQL Statements with one, using only a third of the IO.  If you are not aware of the power of the output clause – I recommend you look at the output clause in books online And finally here’s an example of the output produced using the Northwind database…
