  • Which Java Service or Daemon framework would you recommend?

    I have encountered many different ways to turn a Java program into a Windows Service or a *nix daemon, such as Java Service Wrapper, Apache Commons Daemon, and so on. Barring licensing concerns (such as JSW's GPL or pay dual-license), and more advanced features, which one would you recommend? All I intend to do is convert a simple Java program into a service; I don't need anything fancy, just something that runs as a service or a daemon, so I can start it or stop it in the service manager, or it runs for the lifetime of my *nix uptime. EDIT: I've decided to make this community wiki. I didn't start this question with an intention to find an answer for a problem I really had. I was just doing some reading and researching and chanced upon this question, so I was looking for recommendations and the like. Sorry for not doing this sooner or doing this at first. I didn't know what community wiki was for when I first started, and I completely forgot about this question until now. Many thanks for the answers!

  • Spring 3.0 REST implementation or Jersey?

    Hi, SO! I'm currently trying to figure out which implementation of JSR-311 I'm going to recommend further up the food chain. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two options - Spring 3.0 with it's native support for REST - or use Sun's own Jersey (Restlets might also be an option). To me it doesn't seem to be much of a difference in the actual syntax, but there might be issues with performance that I haven't figured out yet. The service is meant to replace some heavy-duty EJB's and make a RESTful Webservice instead. The load is expected to be rather high, up in the 100k users per day (max) range, but will be seriously load balanced. Thanks for all your insights.

  • How do I refer to a client_deploy.wsdd file that's in WEB-INF?

    A basic question, but I can't seem to find the answer. I have an Axis-generated web service that also calls another web service (for which the stubs are also generated with Axis). It's deployed in weblogic 9.2 That called web service requires authentication. I've googled for the code to set up authentication. It requires that I set up a client_deploy.wsdd file which I've done, and added it to WEB-INF. I need to specify this flle to Axis. There seem to be several ways of doing this, including System.setProperty("axis.ClientConfigFile", "client_deploy.wsdd") or EngineConfiguration config = new FileProvider("client_deploy.wsdd"); but these aren't working for me. Is the issue the path for the client_deploy.wsdd file? How do I refer to a file that's at the top level of the WEB-INF directory? Googling tells me how to access it as a stream, but I don't want that, I need to pass a file name to these functions... Please point out the obvious that I have missed

    I am trying to consume this WSDL service: Transit Time Service I successfully connect and get a response the first time but on subsequent calls I receive the exception: The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. I overrode the GetWebRequest in the reference.cs file as such: protected override System.Net.WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest webRequest = (HttpWebRequest)base.GetWebRequest(uri); webRequest.KeepAlive = false; return webRequest; } This hasn't yielded any improvement. I am at a loss as to what options I have now, does anyone have any other ideas that I could try so that I may avoid this error? Thanks in advance! Josh

  • Windows Service Printing Behaviour

    Alright, I was tasked to develop a Windows Service that listens to a directory for files that are dropped in it, read them, delete them and print out a report. I installed the service on my work laptop (Win 7 x86) and a test machine (XP x86) under a User account at first. It would do everything as it should except the print the report. No errors, nothing. Then I made it run under Local System and it produced a "No printers found" exception. Converting the app to a Console Application and running on these machines gave the desired result. OK, so now I was assuming that there are security "stuff" involved. Then I installed the service on a Server 2008 x64 machine (under Local System) and it just worked. Can anybody explain to me why this is happening? Why does the service allow printing from Server OS but not from a Desktop OS or am I missing something very obvious?

    I am trying to give a LocationClient a two-minute period to connect before calling getLastLocation on it. Initially I implemented this with a Timer (and TimerTask), but because Timers do not work in sleepmode, I would like to translate it to an AlarmManager. However, I am a bit confused as to how to do this, considering an AlarmManager calls another class, whereas I want to remain in the same class and simply delay for a two-minute period. This is how it looks with a Timer.     In silverlight 3 I had an object that had a property that was an observable collection. I returned this via a web service then databinded to it. Upgrade to silveright 4..... Now my program crashes because the Observable Collection is converted to an array. What is the best way to do this? Observable collection is not even an option any longer.

  • Expose webservice directly to webclients or keep a thin server-side script layer in between?

    Hi, I'm developing a REST webservice (Java, Jersey). The people I'm doing this for want to directly access the webservice via Javascript. Some instinct tells me this is not a good idea, but I cannot really explain that instinct. My natural approach would have been to have the webservice do the real logic and database access, but also have some (relatively thin) server-side script layer (e.g. in PHP). Clients would talk to the PHP layer which in turn would talk to the webservice. (The webservice would be pretty local to the apache/PHP server and implicitly trust calls from the script layer. The script layer would take care of session management.) (Btw, I am not talking about just hiding the webservice behind an Apache which simply redirects calls.) But as I find myself at a lack of words/arguments to explain my instinct, I wonder whether my instinct is right - note that while I have been developing all kinds of software in all kinds of languages and frameworks for like 17 years, this is the first time I develop a webservice. So my question is basically: what are your opinions? Are there any standard setups? Is my instinct totally wrong? Or partially? ;P Many thanks, Max PS: I might add a few bits of information about the planned usage of the whole application: will be accessed by different kinds of users, partly general public, partly privileged thus, all major OS/browser combinations can be expected as clients however, writing the client is not my responsibility will potentially have very high load/traffic logic of webservice will later be massively expanded for another product which is basically a superset of the functionality of the current project there is a significant likelihood that at some point an API should be exposed which can be used by 3rd party developers - obviously, with some restrictions at some point, the public view of the product should become accessible via smartphones, too (in other words, maybe a customized version of the site to adapt to the smaller display and different input methods)

  • Forming a SOAP request message through WSDL

    I'm very new to webservices. I'm trying to figure out how I can formulate a request message (and determine what the response message) would be based on the wsdl description that I have. This is from a third party web service. The WSDL description that I have access to gives me a bunch of information like <types> <message> <operation> etc. But in the examples that I've seen online, it's showing the request mesage within the "soap:envelope" tag. What am I missing? Eventually I'd like to be able to call this webservice using JQuery. But I can't even figure out how to formulate the request message let alone make an ajax call to it. any help would be appreciated.

  • Render an asynchronous report, wider than the screen, without extra scrollbars

    I have an asynchronous local SSRS 2005 report that is of variable height and width, but routinely is bigger than the screen. I want to render it full size so that some of the report renders off screen and the only scrollbars the user sees are the ones on the browser window. What is the best way to accomplish this? The only method that I've found that even comes remotely close to what I want is to set static width/height values that are much larger than the report will ever be. But, this is undesirable since it leaves so much extra whitespace in the browser window. Has anyone had success rendering asynchronous reports without the extra scrollbars?

  • creating existing users on AWS when they don't have a group

    It seems when chef creates a user with the id of "foobar" it also creates a group with the id of "foobar". AWS doesn't do that. So, when I run my create users script via Opsworks it blows up on the first user that already exists because the group doesn't. I thought there was a way to say create the user but not the group, but I can't find it. What's the best way to solve this problem? Can I: Tell chef to not create the user's group? Tell chef to create it if the user exists but the group doesn't? Write a script that finds the existing users and creates groups for them? Something else?

    Hi, I am consuming one webservice, while consuming there can different types expception might occur depeninding on various situation like.. network failur, invalid soap data or exception from serverside also might occur. How can I differntiate between these different excpetion? Because in my application, with these exceptions I need to update the various status Like: if network failure occurs Status will be "unable to connect webservice" so I can try after sometime later. If exception comes from Web server , no need to call/try again. Thanks nRk

  • Windows Service Fails on Launch

    I'm trying to write a windows service. It installs fine, but fails when I run it with the following exception. I've searched for the string "MyNewProgramService", but I can't find any conversions that would throw this error. I've also added try/catch blocks to a bunch of code with custom exception handling without finding where this exception is occuring. I'm thinking it's somewhere in the auto-generated configuartion/setup code. Any ideas?   • How do I find the install directory of a Windows Service, using C#?

    I'm pretty sure that a Windows service gets C:\winnt (or similar) as its working directory when installed using InstallUtil.exe. Is there any way I can access, or otherwise capture (at install time), the directory from which the service was originally installed? At the moment I'm manually entering that into the app.exe.config file, but that's horribly manual and feels like a hack. Is there a programmatic way, either at run time or install time, to determine where the service was installed from?

  • Grails: GGTS not running on Amazon AWS EC2 anyone else successful?

    Im just curious if anyone has had success trying to run the Groovy Grails tool suite on an Amazon AWS EC2 instance with its display exported into your windows machine. If so, I wanted to know which flavor of linux was used on the EC2. I am not having much success with it on the Amazon Linux but haven't tried their Ubuntu instances yet. I got all the way to getting GGTS installed and getting the display exported but when I launch GGTS I get log errors about libraries missing. This is most likely because I didn't use yum to install it so I am probably missing dependencies but I didn't have a choice its not offered as a yum package.   • How can i allow people in my local network to access the web service in my machine?

    I have coded a web service using the Axis 2 framework and I can successfully invoke it using a test client (SoapUI) on the local machine after publishing the application in JBoss 5. I can post to the WS endpoint from the local machine and get the expected response. Now i want to allow other machines to access the web service. i changed the "localhost" to "my own fixed IP" adress at the end point location, and turned firewall off, but impossible to access the WS. Note : windows Xp SP3. Any idea ? Thanks in advance !!

If you visit this URL, which I'm calling, we'll be getting no errors: http://api.bf3stats.com/pc/server/?output=json&id=534f7035-cef8-48aa-b233-8d44a0956e68 But when I try to get the stats via Ajax call, I get: Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token : ... In my console I can see that the response is coming in, as when I visit the url, but I can't get the data with the ajax call...     Hello, We have a need to access a DB that only allows one connection at a time. This screams "singleton" to me. The catch of course is that the singleton connection will be exposed (either directly or indirectly) via a web-service (most probable a SOAP based web-service - located on a separate server from the calling app(s) ) - which means that there may be more than one app / instance attempting to connect to the singleton class. In PHP, what is the best way to create a global singleton or a web-service singleton? TIA
