• Looking for information on Scholastic BASIC programming books from the mid-1980s

  My very first introduction to programming was in grade school, when I would purchase books full of BASIC code listings from the Scholastic school catalogue. Lately I have been searching teh Internetz for information on these books, but without any success. Does anyone know or remember anything about these books? All I can recall is that they were large paperbacks full of various BASIC code listings, some of which were game like. They all included instructions on how to modify the code listings for the different systems of the day, and I distinctly remember that they would always ask for a number in order to seed the RANDOMIZE command (since I figured out on my own that RANDOMIZE TIMER eliminated the need for the question and answer).

• A little SQL tip for C# developers

  The other day at work I came across a handy little block of SQL code from Jeremiah Clark's blog. It's pretty simple logic but through the mind of a C# developer making some quick DB updates, seems to me that it's more likely to end up writing out the code in Solution 1 instead of Solution 2 below to solve the problem. Basically, I needed to check and see if a specific record existed in Table1. If it does exist, then update that record, otherwise insert a new record into Table1. Solution 1: IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column1='SomeValue')     UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' ELSE     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...) Solution 2: UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' IF @@ROWCOUNT=0     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...)         As Jeremiah explains, they both accomplish the same thing but from a performance standpoint, Solution 2 is the better way to go (saved table/index scan).   Hi All, I run a (CentOS-powered) website currently, and we are currently planning on moving to a dedicated server. One of the essentials for us is preventing data loss with the least amount of bother. Therefore, I feel that the following features are important for us RAID 1 Managed backups by the hosting company, with at least a 7 day retention In my search for providers, I found some which provide RAID 1, but none apart from GoDaddy which provide Managed backups. 1&1 provides "FTP backup bandwidth", but I have to provide the backup location myself. Am I missing something? Are there other reputable hosting providers which can provide managed backups as part of their dedicated hosting plans? Some pointers will be much appreciated. Thanks, -A

  It was very amusing going to PASS and the MVP summit this year and people coming up to me asking how my baby was. Well thats not so amusing, how they know I‘ve got a baby is. During the last 24hrs of PASS my wife was overdue having our 3rd child, she had gone out and so I was on alert if the phone rang. Guess what it rang half way through my presentation on reporting services tips and tricks, luckily it wasn’t my wife but we did have the baby the next day. That was close. • How to get feedback on mobile application

  I am relatively new to programming. I have been programming with Java and Android for about 2 years now and just recently released my first app to the Google Play app store. I have passed the word on to everyone I know and posted a few times on Facebook about it. But I am not really seeing anyone install them. I love to code I'm not looking to have the next big time app, but it would be nice to get some installs and feedback/ratings so I can get an idea of how well its doing and if there are any fixes or improvements I can make. I thought about doing an AdMob campaign a couple times here and there at about $10 to $20 per day. But I'm not sure if that will generate any kind of worthwhile feedback. What other things could I be doing in order to get some feedback on my application? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

• dput keeps selecting the wrong ppa

  I am trying to upload my application for Ubuntu app showdown and I have built it with quickly package --extras, however when I run quickly submit ubuntu I get an email telling me the package was rejected because it was trying to upload to an older ppa I deleted months ago. I can upload the source to the right area with dput, but obviously I need a built deb package. This is starting to stress me out somewhat because I have been fighting this for over a day or more now. Any help is greatly appreciated, I understand quickly is supposed to do a lot of the grunt work for me so it's getting frustrating not knowing what's going on. Thanks, Neil

• If PHP websites represnt 70% of websites in my country then should I learn it?

  In my country most of the sites are built using PHP and MySQL. Half of those sites use vbulletin and Wordpress. When it comes to companies, ministries and universities they use ASP.NET. I am not sure what should I learn to get more money as freelacer? Should I learn ASP.NET and focus my area to build companies and universities' sites? (And the question if they will know me one day and ask me to build any of their sites or not?) Or should I learn PHP and focus my business on people's sites and maybe some small formal sites? Which option will give me more money?

• Blog not even ranking for exact title match, after domain has been dropped twice [on hold]

  Consider a blog, related to blogging and SEO. The domain has been dropped (expired) 2 times before acquisition. The current owner is the 3rd owner of the domain since 5 months. Blog posts are not ranking, even for exact titles. Google+ or other shares will show up instead of the content. Some blog posts are not even indexed. Let us TAKE that it gets around 7 organic visits / day. Dropped domain, less likely used for spam (WayBack machine (2 Reframed drops) 3 captures since 2004, Don't know whether there was Email spam) (But no manual actions in WMT, so no reconsideration request). What could be the reason for this? How can Google be told that ownership is changed and the domain is now spam-free? Would this domain be salvageble, or does this only change after relocating to another domain?

  Is Windows 7 written using Xaml? Edit Wow, so much hate for such a little question. I'm not an idiot. I know what XAML is. I use it every day. I was just curious whether some of the visual features were laid out with XAML, or if XAML was incorporated in some way to the product. I'm sorry if it is a programming sin not to know what Windows 7 was written in. I mean, I know Windows XP et al used C++/C, I've used Win32 quite a lot (and MFC and .NET).

• Slashdotted web site seeks new home

  I am maintaining a website that contains mostly simple html (just a little php). Normally the site receives only 4000 hits per month, but it was recently slashdotted by the New York Times (30,000 visitors and 30 GB in a day) and the web host provider (bluehost) throttled the CPU in response. This slowed down the website considerably. What web host providers would offer a more scalable solution? Ideally I would like a high-quality host that charges by the GB and can handle bandwidth to expand during sudden slashdotting episodes without a reduction in performance.

• Just too bright

  Like a lot of folks I am using SSMS and VS pretty much all day. But staring at the text on the stark white background can be a bit much for my eyes after a while. I have seen quite a few different “themes” for these apps which change all the colors around to make it easier on your eyes. Some of them are pretty cool but all I really wanted was to dim the background a little not radically change the way everything looked. Since the stock colors for comments, breakpoints, keywords and the like are so familiar I wanted a background that did not interfere with those colors. So I picked the following custom color for the item background. It comes off as a parchment type color. Hue: 42        Red: 244 Sat: 123    Green: 245 Lum: 221    Blue: 224

• I studied electrical engineering. Can I work as a developer? [closed]

  A while ago I finished my Msc in Electrical Engineering and started working as an engineering consultant where I mostly do development work. I am good at picking up languages/technologies tools. I have fiddled with C/C++/C#/perl/ant/bash/html/css etc. Although I have never had a complain for my work, rather the contrary, I just feel that some day, someone will ask me a real hard task which would maybe seem rather trivial for a computer scientist but hard for me. Should I read/do something to become a better developer. Should I pick up a book about design patterns or algorithms for example? Is this normal that I have this kind of "fear"?   I’m trying to make TraceTune (and eventually ClearTrace) work the way I do.  My typical query tuning session goes like this: Run a trace and upload to TraceTune/ClearTrace Tune the slowest queries Goto 1 I might do this two or three times in one day and then not come back to it again for weeks or even months.  This is especially true for those clients that I only visit a few times per month.  In many cases I’ll look at a query, decide I can’t do much with it and move on.  I needed a way to capture that information. TraceTune now lets you enter a comment for a query.  It can be as simple or as complex as you like.  The comment will be shown inline with the execution history of that query. This should let you walk back through your history with a query and decide whether you should spend more time tuning it.

• Is there a taskbar applet to show the status of a remote host?

  At the end of the day I would like to be able to copy files to my home PC just in case I feel inspired to work on them in the evening. But I only want to do this if the PC is on already. (I can remote wake-on-lan the PC but I don't want to always be doing that). I would like some taskbar applet that shows the status of the PC and whether I can ssh into it or not. Obviously it would also be interesting to have an idea as to how long it is on for whilst I am at work as that gives a good indication of whether anyone is in or not. However being able to unobtrusively copy files to the remote machine is the main objective. Perhaps another approach is to run rsync on cron and if the remote host is not up then I guess it will fail. Is that correct? If anyone else has ideas on how to best sync a work and home PC then please do tell.

• Problem installing from Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32bit cd

  Older laptop currently running xp, only 128mb ram too. Is 128 just too small? But, 20+ gigs free hard drive and it's been defragmented. When I try to install Ubuntu from a CD I get the screen that says ubuntu and has the four red dots and then eventually goes blank and I just hear hard drive noises. Stays this way indefinitely (shut it off after half a day). Burned another cd, at slow writing speed too, and dl is from Ubuntu and get same result. Any help much appreciated!

• Over a million COBOL porgrammers in the world?

  I think I heard on a previous StackOverflow podcast that COBOL was used as the programming language for traffic lights (or something like that), so this got me interested. I did a quick Google search and found this little article: Today, Cobol is everywhere, yet largely unheard of by millions of people who interact with it daily when using the ATM, stopping at traffic lights or buying a product online. The statistics on Cobol attest to its huge influence on the business world: There are over 220 billion lines of Cobol in existence, a figure which equates to about 80 per cent of the world’s actively used code. There over a million Cobol programmers in the world. There are 200 times as many Cobol transactions that take place each day than Google searches. I didn't really trust the source seeing as how it's on some random PHPBB forum. So how accurate are these figures? Are there really 220 billion lines of COBOL? I assume a few people/companies still use COBOL, but how many?
