• Reading a file over a network path

  I have this weird issue,when I use > File FileToRead = new File("\\\\MYSERVER\\MYFOLDER\\MYFOLDER\\MYPICTURE.JPG"); to read a file over a network,all I get is a null pointer exception.Normally a local path works with this,but when on a network path,I just couldn't manage to get it to work.Any ideas? PS:oh and my network connection seems to work,no issues when accessing data in windows explorer... • how do I resolve "user isn't assigned to any management roles" error in Exchange 2010 EMC?

  Newly installed Exchange 2010 box (technically, a partially installed box, as this error is preventing me from completing the install). When I launch EMC or the Management Powershell, I get this error: VERBOSE: Connecting to myserver.mydomain.internal [myserver.mydomain.internal] Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message: The user "mydomain\administrator" isn't assigned to any management roles. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. Failed to connect to any Exchange Server in the current site. Thing is.. • How can I configure a Linksys EA4500 + usb printer for network printing (without connect cloud)

  The documentation and classic firmware (2.0.37) for Cisco's Linksys EA4500 is a bit sparse on setup details. It says I can connect a USB-printer, but then goes on to try to sell "Connect Cloud" remote management software. I don't want that. I just want to know how to set this up with the existing advanced firmware. Is it possible? AFAIK, to setup a IPP or LDP printer, there is usually some kind of queue configuration on the server (i.e. the ea4500 in this case), but I can't find it in the firmware. I also have been unable to find any existing protocols from win7 or mac osx. (windows network share, IPP/LDP etc.) I'm curious if I need to have the "Storage" accounts active and connect to my router either via the local IP or router name. There's a lot of unknowns here; it would help to know how this particular router actually works.

• network routing between mac & virtual XP

  Hi - I have a max laptop running XP inside VirtualBox. The network is setup to be a "Bridged Adapter" so that the IPs for both the host & guest OS's are assigned by my wireless routed. My guest XP has Nortel VPN connecting to corporate lan. When this is connected, I want to allow my host Mac OS to access the corporate network. But I'm struggling. Without Nortel VPN running, I can change routing on the mac so all traffic is sent via the guest XP - this works. But once I activate the VPN, this no longer works. If I try to change the routing on mac to run through the IP address assigned to the Nortel adapter, I get a "Network is unreachable" error. Below is the output from ipconfig /all on the guest XP OS. I'm beginning to believe that what I want to do is not possible because of the way Nortel secure the VPN - but before I give up I thought I'd post the problem here. • Network Block Device (NBD) clients for Windows or similar solutions

  Are there any NBD clients for Windows? Strangely, I cannot find any, or I am searching for them in a wrong way. Such client should be possibly a driver with front-end tool (may be a command-line one) allowing to create virtual drives and associate them with given hosts (or simply localhost) and ports where NBD servers are listening. From user perspective virtual drive should be close to what physical drive is, so it should be accessible as something like \\.\PhysicalDriveX (maybe \\.\VirtualDriveX?), be visible in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and mountvol tools at least. (The only thing I found remotely close to NBD on Windows is ImDisk's proxy mode and companion tool devio, but AFAIK ImDisk only works at partition level (so no virtual drive) and devio uses different protocol.) Secondary question is: Are there any (preferably simple) Windows-specific solutions allowing creation of virtual drive delegating read/write request to user-space via some explicit way (like via TCP, IPC, DLL implementing given API, etc.)?

• Processing files from a Content Distribution Network problem

  From what I understand that CDNs are meant to physically cache your static files in multiple regions closer to your users. However, I've noticed a few websites that when a page is requested from their server, they grab the asset files from their cdn, process them (compress, minify, etc.) cache the results on their server and then send them to the user requesting the page. This doesn't make too much sense to me. Wouldn't processing the files on your server eliminate the gains from using a cdn? Is this a normal way of doing things, or am I not understanding the whole asset management concept?

  Scenario: A .NET-based application server (Wonderware IAS/System Platform) hosts automation objects that communicate with various equipment on the factory floor. CPython is hosted inside this application server (using Python for .NET). The automation objects have scripting functionality built-in (using a custom, .NET-based language). These scripts call Python functions. The Python functions are part of a system to track Work-In-Progress on the factory floor. The purpose of the system is to track the produced widgets along the process, ensure that the widgets go through the process in the correct order, and check that certain conditions are met along the process. The widget production history and widget state is stored in a relational database, this is where SQLAlchemy plays its part. • Windows 2008 R2 SMB / CIFS Logging to diagnose Brother MFC Network Scanning

  I am attempting to setup network scanning on a brother MFC-9970CDW printer. According to the Brother documentation, the printer is setup to connect to any CIFS network share. I applied all of the appropriate setting in the printer however I get a "sending error" when I try to scan a document. When I look at the logs of the 2008 R2 server that I am attempting to connect to; I can see in the security log where the printer successfully authenticates, however nothing else is logged. I would assume that immediately after the authentication, the printer is making a CIFS request and some sort of error is occurring, however I can't seem to find any way to log this information to find out what is going on. Is it possible to get Windows 2008 to log SMB/CIFS traffic? • Hanging of host network connections when starting KVM guest on bridge

  Hi, I've a KVM system upon which I'm running a network bridge directly between all VM's and a bond0 (eth0, eth1) on the host OS. As such, all machines are presented on the same subnet, available outside of the box. The bond is doing mode 1 active / passive, with an arp_ip_target set to the default gateway, which has caused some issues in itself, but I can't see the bond configs mattering here myself. I'm seeing odd things most times when I stop and start a guest on the platform, in that on the host I lose network connectivity (icmp, ssh) for about 30 seconds. I don't lose connectivity on the other already running VM's though... they can always ping the default GW, but the host can't. I say "about 30 seconds" but from some tests it actually seems to be 28 seconds usually (or at least, I lose 28 pings...) and I'm wondering if this somehow relates to the bridge config. I'm not running STP on the bridge at all, and the forwarding delay is set to 1 second, path cost on the bond0 lowered to 10 and port priority of bond0 also lowered to 1. As such I don't think that the bridge should ever be able to think that bond0 is not connected just fine (as continued guest connectivity implies) yet the IP of the host, which is on the bridge device (... could that matter?? ) becomes unreachable. I'm fairly sure it's about the bridged networking, but at the same time as this happens when a VM is started there are clearly loads of other things also happening so maybe I'm way off the mark. • BSD Sockets don't behave in a iPhone 3G environment

  I noticed that many times while developing for an iPhone 3G, BSD socket functions will simply fail. I also noticed at the time, the 3G antenna wasn't even ON, nor was there WIFI Access to back up the network call (So it seems ridiculous that it doesn't turn on to support the network request).. This information was verified with an app from Apple in the SDK called Connectivity Test, or something of the sort. Basically if you load Safari or something, then quickly load up the App it would be fine.. Of course that's not ideal. Apparently, to apple, gethostbyname() or something of the sort is by no means a reason to turn on the Antenna. I contacted Apple about this, and they said that the BSD functions do not switch the Antenna on, but calling all of the Objective-C CFNetwork functions do. I want portable code, so is there a way to keep my existing BSD setup? I really dislike coding in Objective-C, so if anyone knows a work around, that would be awesome.

  We are currently in the process of solidifying a database change management process. We run MySql 5 running on RedHat 5. I have selected LiquiBase as the tool because it's open source and allows us to expand its functionality later if needed. It also seems to be one of the few free projects that are still active. Has anyone here had any experience using LiquiBase or other Db versioning tools? Company Background: We are an SaaS company providing a 7/24 hosted application. There are dozens of instances running different versions of the same database and we need a way to manage the deploy process as it's starting to get out of control. The databases have hundreds of tables and we typically do releases once every 3 months.

  I have some legacy code that was used to monitor my applications cpu,memory etc that I want to convert to a bundle. Now when i start this bundle its complaining Missing Constraint: Import-Package: com.sun.management; version="0.0.0" I had used the OperatingSystemMXBean to get access to stats on the JVM. My question is can I use this class inside an OSGI container and if so how? Or should I use some other way to monitor my application. I was making an RMI call to the application from a web frontend to get the nodes performance figures pre OSGi.

Given N developers running a mixture of Ubuntu and Mac OS X, all with the same version of Eclipse, how to make sure that: Each developer, on top of his favourite "Available Software Sites" selection, has a common set of installation sources? Each developer has an easy (automated?) way of installing a base set of plug-ins? Each developer can just as easily install a custom plugin developed in-house and distributed over the local network? No automatically deployed plugins conflict with any others a developer might already be using?   Hello people! I was asked to develop a algorithm for network application on C. This project will be developed on Linux for PC and then it will be transferred to a more portable platform, something that will include a microcontroller. There are many microcontroller/companies out there that provide very nice and large libraries for TCP/IP. This software will hold statistics on the network performance. The whole idea of a cross platform (uC - PC) seems rubbish to me cause eventually the code should be written in a more platform specific way for the microcontroller, but I am not expert to judge anyway. Is there any clever way of doing this or is there a anyone that did this before? My brainstorming has "Wrapper library" and "Matlab"... Any ideas? Thx!

• lowest latency, least overhead app server?

  I'm designing an application which will have a network interface for feeding out large numbers of very small metadata requests. The application code itself is very fast, basically looking up data cached in memory and sending it to the client. What's the absolute lowest latency I can get for a network application server running on a linux box? This will be an internal app running on gigE with no authentication. Any language/framework considered, with a preference for C, C++, or Python. Likewise for protocol, although HTTP would be nice.

• iPhone Objective-C/Plain C Memory Management

  Hi everyone, I understand Objective-C memory management but I'm using Core Graphics functionality such as CGRect, CGPoint, CGImageRef etc.. which is written in plain C. My question is how do i manage this memory or is it already handled for me? According to the Apple documentation if an Apple Objective-C function doesn't have copy, new or create in it the returned object is managed for you using autorealease. Is this true for the Core Graphics stuff also? (Well i guess it wont be using autorealease but maybe something similar?) Thanks for taking the time to read this.

• Memory management in Qt?

  I'm quite new to Qt and am wondering on some basic stuff with memory management and the life of objects. When do I need to delete / destroy my objects? Is any of this handled automatically? In the example below, which of the objects I create do I need to delete? What happens to the instance variable myOtherClass when myClass is destroyed? What happens if I don't delete / destroy my objects at all, will that be a problem to memory? in MyClass.h: class MyClass { public: MyClass(); ~MyClass(); MyOtherClass *myOtherClass; }; in MyClass.cpp: MyClass::MyClass() { myOtherClass = new MyOtherClass(); MyOtherClass myOtherClass2; QString myString = "Hello"; } As you can see this is quite newbie-easy stuff but where can I learn about this in an easy way? User included Member / User Administrator Vendor Affiliate I find a lot ecommerce that support multiple shop, but each vendor don't have their own login and management. And in the front I would like to share the cart. and can buy from different shop. If multiple subdomain supported that would be more better. Web 2.0 design would be much more preferable.   A follow-up on this system management question: Since I probably will not get much feedback on serverfault I'll give it a try here. My main concern is to reflect the dependencies between the databases, services ans tasks/jobs I'll have to manage. Besides considering Powershell, I even thought about using MSBuild because it would allow for modeling dependencies and reuse configuration targets. In other words: What technology should I use to develop a flexible solution that will allow me to stop service A, B and C on machine D in the right order and disable task E on machine F when taking down database X?

• Open source political campaign management software?

  Does anyone know of any active open source projects working on political campaign management software? I looked on sourceforge but didn't see anything relevant from the queries "political", "politics", "donations", "campaign", or in the categories "accounting", "politics" or "voting". I'm involved with a political campaign that is currently paying out the nose for some horribly designed SaaS (whose Name i Guess i should Protect, ahem) to basically just keep track of donations people have made now, donations people have made in the past, donations people have pledged to make, contact information, the way they will likely vote, etc. It's a bit much to manage in spreadsheets, but doesn't seem like it's something complex enough that political campaigns should have to pay for (especially low-budget local ones). I'd love to help out if such a project exists, or start/revive one if it doesn't. Any hints, places to look, etc are much appreciated.

  I'm developing a site that will display confidential readonly information, with data fetched from a WCF service. My question: What is the best approach to user management across different information pages. The service returns a collection with customer info after a secure login. My idea is to have a Customer object class that is stored in session. Is it possible to use things like HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated followed by HttpContext.Current.Session["UserId"] without using a database with role-based security? Would I be better off with a combination of local database, Linq to SQL or datasets rather than using just class objects for data fetched from service? thanks, nakori
