  I've been following Ryan Bates' Railscasts tutorial on CarrierWave, which you can find here Everything works fine, except for when I go to view my profile, it gives me this error: undefined local variable or method `user' I don't know why it is telling me this, as I am using Devise for my authentication, and that is the name of my model.   Hi, moved a rails app of mine onto a new server and had to install a few gem dependencies. However, after installing the mysql gem I get the error, uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes, whenever I try to run a rake command that involves the mysql database. It seems I only get this error when I require the mms2r gem. Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm running mysql 2.8.1 gem.

  I'm familiar with function definitions and variable declarations being in class definitions: public class MyClass { public int myvar; public void doSomething() { } } But what does it "mean" in Ruby when a method is actually called in the class definition? This happens amply in Rails, for instance: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end What exactly does this do (at a lower level than "it adds some methods to the class")? How would I implement such a function (e.g., one that mixes in some additional methods)?

Such data include database file settings (database.yml) and some other files that have secret API keys. When I deploy to heroku, how can I deal with files that are not under revision control. When I use Capistrano, I can write some hook methods, but I don't know what to do with Heroku.

Basically, if title or artist are present in the :conditions (or dynamically i.e. find_all_by_artist), then the WHERE artist = :artist should become WHERE UPPER(artist) = UPPER(:artist) or something along these lines. Is there a way of doing it with Rails?

  I am trying to setup my dev environment on my Mac (running Mac OS X 10.6) for my work's rails application. • Is it OK to manage associations manually?

  Here are the relevant models: User Product Order A User can sell or buy products An order has a buyer, a seller and one product I know that I can do this with a HABTM relationship between orders and user, but is seems to me like it would be simpler to put in the Order table the following columns: :seller_id :buyer_id and manage those relationships manually as orders are only created once and never edited. However, this doesn't seem very Rails-like and I am wondering if I am missing something conceptually at the HABTM relationship.

  Hi all, I'm studying how to use caching in Heroku for my Rails app. HTTP cache powered by Varnish is superb and I'll use it in all pages without user info but I also want to use a kind of ActiveRecord caching with Memcached using "high livel" plugins such as cache_fu or cache-money...but it seems that Heroku supports only the memcached gem (http://docs.heroku.com/memcache) and it's a very low level Memcachad API... Do you have any other solutions? Thx.
