  • How important is it for a programmer to know how to implement a QuickSort/MergeSort algorithm from memory?

    I was reviewing my notes and stumbled across the implementation of different sorting algorithms. As I attempted to make sense of the implementation of QuickSort and MergeSort, it occurred to me that although I do programming for a living and consider myself decent at what I do, I have neither the photographic memory nor the sheer brainpower to implement those algorithms without relying on my notes. All I remembered is that some of those algorithms are stable and some are not. Some take O(nlog(n)) or O(n^2) time to complete. Some use more memory than others... I'd feel like I don't deserve this kind of job if it weren't because my position doesn't require that I use any sorting algorithm other than those found in standard APIs. I mean, how many of you have a programming position where it actually is essential that you can remember or come up with this kind of stuff on your own?

  • 13.10 upgrade dropping wifi [on hold]

    Almost a complete newb here. After my last upgrade from 12.04 to 13.10 my wifi now randomly drops. The only way I can get a signal back is a shutdown and restart otherwise it shows no network is even available to connect to. Had no problems until the upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.     There's an AudioFileOpenURL function which opens an file. With AudioFileReadPackets that file is accessed to read packets. But one thing that stucks in my brain is: Does AudioFileOpenURL actually load the whole monster into memory? Or is that a lightweight operation? So is it possible to read data from a file, only a specific portion, without having the whole terabytes of stuff in memory?

    What's current best practice to capture full kernel stack traces on a Linux system (RHEL 5.x, kernel 2.6.18) that occasionally panics in a device driver? I'm used to the "old" SunOS way of doing things - crash dumps get written to swap, and on reboot the dump gets retrieved in the local file system. man 8 crash refers to diskdump, but that appears to be unsupported. and/or deprecated. I've played with kdump, but it's unclear whether I can get a stack trace from that. Triggering a panic via Magic SysRq didn't create one. It also seems wasteful to reserve so much memory (128MB) just for a kexec crash recovery kernel.

  • Why do memory-managed languages retain the `new` keyword?

    The new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# creates a new instance of a class. This syntax seems to have been inherited from C++, where new is used specifically to allocate a new instance of a class on the heap, and return a pointer to the new instance. In C++, this is not the only way to construct an object. You can also construct an object on the stack, without using new - and in fact, this way of constructing objects is much more common in C++. So, coming from a C++ background, the new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# seemed natural and obvious to me. Then I started to learn Python, which doesn't have the new keyword. In Python, an instance is constructed simply by calling the constructor, like: f = Foo() At first, this seemed a bit off to me, until it occurred to me that there's no reason for Python to have new, because everything is an object so there's no need to disambiguate between various constructor syntaxes. But then I thought - what's really the point of new in Java? Why should we say Object o = new Object();? Why not just Object o = Object();? In C++ there's definitely a need for new, since we need to distinguish between allocating on the heap and allocating on the stack, but in Java all objects are constructed on the heap, so why even have the new keyword? The same question could be asked for Javascript. In C#, which I'm much less familiar with, I think new may have some purpose in terms of distinguishing between object types and value types, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it seems to me that many languages which came after C++ simply "inherited" the new keyword - without really needing it. It's almost like a vestigial keyword. We don't seem to need it for any reason, and yet it's there. Question: Am I correct about this? Or is there some compelling reason that new needs to be in C++-inspired memory-managed languages like Java, Javascript and C#?

    I can't connect to my WIFI after installing Ubuntu 13.10. I tried re-installing it three times (thinking that I did something wrong during the installation) but I still can't connect to my WIFI. It just gives me the message that I'm offline and that I can't connect to my WIFI. I also tried connecting to the internet using LAN cable but with the same results.     I have a Tab Bar Controller created in Interface Builder Within the Tab Bar are 4 Navigation Controllers. Each controller functions separately and perfectly (yay!) What I need to be able to do is a push a view controller onto a different nav controllers stack and switch the focus onto the appropriate tab bar item (so that the user moves sideways (to a different tab) and up (to a new view) at the same time). This is my first time working with a tab bar controller, and while it's been simple to this point, figuring this out is giving me fits. Any tips you can toss my way would be much appreciated.
