• why assert_equal() in Ruby on Rails sometimes seem to compare by Identity and sometimes by value?

  it was very weird that yesterday, I was do an integration test in Rails and assert_equal array_of_obj1, array_of_obj2 # obj1 from db, obj2 created in test and it failed. The values shown inside the array and objects were identical. If I change the test to assert array_of_obj1 == array_of_obj2 Then it will pass. But today, the first test actually passed. What reason could it be? Is assert_equal always using == or .equal? in Rails 2.2 or 2.3.5?

From which build can I test them?   I am adding the new modul in some large library. All methods here are implemented as static. The f2 method is implemented by another author and represents some simulation algorithm (example here is siplified). class B { public: static double f2 (double ( * p_test ) ( const TData &arg ) ) { //difficult algorithm working p_test many times double res = p_test(arg); } }; The f2 method has a pointer to some weight function (here p_test). But in my case some additional parameters computed in f1 for test() methods are required double test ( const TData &arg, const TData &arg2, char *arg3.... ) { } How to inject these parameters into test() (and so to f2) to avoid changing the source code of the f2 methods (that is not trivial), redesign of the library and without dirty hacks :-) ? The most simple step is to override f2 static double f2 (double ( * p_test ) ( const TData &arg ), const TData &arg2, char *arg3.... ) But what to do later? Consider, that methods are static, so there will be problems with objects. Thanks for your help.

  I am trying to add an object into another object. My previous post helped me on the array issue but I also need to add object into an object too. I have something like var temp = {}; for(var i=0; i<test.length; i++){ console.log(test[i]) console.log(product[i]) temp.test[i] =product[i]; } Both of console.log show values. However, I am getting "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property '0' of undefined" for the temp.test[i] =product[i] Can someone help me out on this? Thanks a lot

  I am trying to test a controller method with the following code: it "should set an approved_at date and email the campaign's client" do @campaign = Campaign.create(valid_attributes) post :approve, id: @campaign.id.to_s @campaign.reload @campaign.approved_at.should_not be(nil) end However, when I run this test, I get the following error: Failure/Error: @campaign.reload ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound: Couldn't find Campaign without an ID When I run the analagous lines in the rails console, the reload works and the value is set as I need it to be. Why isn't reload working for me when I run the code in an rspec test?

  It used to be the number one reason for us to choose MSTest from others that we could access and test private methods. Now that Private accessors are deprecated in Visual Studio 2012. Does anyone know why Microsoft make such decision? Is it because it's not a good practice to test private methods? Also, if I still need to unit test my private methods, how could I do that in VS 2012 and later versions?

• Integration testing - can it be done right?

  I used TDD as a development style on some projects in the past two years, but I always get stuck on the same point: how can I test the integration of the various parts of my program? What I am currently doing is writing a testcase per class (this is my rule of thumb: a "unit" is a class, and each class has one or more testcases). I try to resolve dependencies by using mocks and stubs and this works really well as each class can be tested independently. After some coding, all important classes are tested. I then "wire" them together using an IoC container. And here I am stuck: How to test if the wiring was successfull and the objects interact the way I want? An example: Think of a web application. There is a controller class which takes an array of ids, uses a repository to fetch the records based on these ids and then iterates over the records and writes them as a string to an outfile. To make it simple, there would be three classes: Controller, Repository, OutfileWriter. Each of them is tested in isolation. What I would do in order to test the "real" application: making the http request (either manually or automated) with some ids from the database and then look in the filesystem if the file was written. Of course this process could be automated, but still: doesn´t that duplicate the test-logic? Is this what is called an "integration test"? In a book i recently read about Unit Testing it seemed to me that integration testing was more of an anti-pattern?

  I am looking to a book covering adavnced programming techniques, covering different practical scenarios and describing the different challanges with the relative solutions. As example, which are the best ways to implement a module for buying on a web application with credit card or how to manage responsivenes for the frontend of the web application itself (dealing with cache, optimeze plugins, etc). On the web there are tons of tutorials about these topics, but I am looking for a book where such cases are collected all together and treated by real professionists. If the book would provide some code samples, that would be a plus (especially if C# .NET), but I am more interested in the approach/solution rather than the code details. I could not find any of these cases in the general book about programming, therefore I hope someone might point me in the right direction. EDIT: I have 4 years experience as web developer, mainly with Microsoft (C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server) and client side technologies (jQuery, HTML/CSS).

• Empty R environment becomes large file when saved

  I'm getting behaviour I don't understand when saving environments. The code below demonstrates the problem. I would have expected the two files (far-too-big.RData, and right-size.RData) to be the same size, and also very small because the environments they contain are empty. In fact, far-too-big.R ends up the same size as bigfile.RData. I get the same results using 2.14.1 and 2.15.2, both on WinXP 5.1 SP3. Can anyone explain why this is happening?   Hello, I have a xml where I got some empty complex elements and I need to access the attribute values of this element. <test> <a> <abc-metadata name="testData" value="This is a test"/> </a> </test> I want to get hold of the 'testData' and 'This is a test' values. I do read the document and I tried accessing it document.getElementsByTagName . I am sure there is some way to access attributes of element tags but somehow it throws me nullpointer exception.   I am porting over some C++ assembly to VB that performs demodulation of various waveforms. I decided to go the unit test route instead of building a test app to get a feel for how testing is performed. The original demodulation code accepts an array that is the waveform along with some other arguments. How should one go about performing a test on something that has an array as an argument? Is it acceptable to generate fake data in a file and read it in at the beginning of the test? On a side note - The original C++ code was written because we were performing math that we couldn't do in VB6 so we had to cross boundaries between C++ and VB6 and arrays were used. Is there a "better" way of handling large amounts of data in the .NET world that us VB6 programmers may not yet be privy to? Or if we aren't crossing that managed/un-managed boundary, should we be representing our data as objects instead? Thanks all!
