Ubuntu 12.04 appearance

I have just updated my old Ubuntu 11.04 to the 12.04 version and I really dislike the new appearance. Is there anyway I can go back to the old appearance? Here are some examples of the things I would like to change: the omnipresent orange colour (for example, colour of the folders, colour of the little x on the top right of the window etc.); used to be blue. The icons on the right vertical bar are unreadable: the dropbox icon has become a light grey shapeless blob, the battery icon does not indicate, as it did before, when electricity is plugged in and when it isn't. everything is just grey and orange (I chose the Radiance theme, the other ones are even worse). There used to be a lot of options choosing the shape of the windows and so on, where has all that gone? Thanks for your help!

How to create a Raining Effect(Particles) on Android?

I am developing a 2d android strategy game, it runs on SurfaceView, so I can't(or can I?) use LibGdx's particle system. And I would like to make a raining effect, I am aiming for something like this( http://ridingwiththeriver.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/rain-fall-animation.gif ), I don't need the splash effect in the end (although that would be superb, but probably would take up a lot of system resources). How could I achieve that raining effect? Any ideas? Thank You a lot in advance!

New Workstation – Lenovo W530 Core i7 32GB 256GB SSD Win8Pro

So I pretty-much have my new machine up and running full-time. I am still going to have to hit my old workstation for some things but am more-or-less working on my new machine. It’s really fast. And Bret was right, I’m not so far using all the RAM. 16 would have been enough but as @CodeMonkeyJava “go big or go home”. Windows 8 is…interesting. So far I still seem to do most of my work in the “Desktop”. However, I like the Store concept and I like the Metro UX. Live tiles are also nice. I really like how I can switch between Desktop and Metro easily. Overall I think Microsoft has done a great job of combining the needed experience for touch and mouse. My overall Windows 8 rating is 5.9 because of the video card. Otherwise I’m hitting 7.8. The system boots from cold in about 11 seconds and performs complete shutdown in 4.7 seconds. It wakes from sleep in less than 1 second. VS 2012 starts and restarts almost instantly. In fact, I find myself staring at the start page without realizing it. Build time doesn’t seem to be significantly increased but it is faster. I seem to already be reinvigorated for work with this new machine. I’m looking forward to the performance.

Adobe Reader (acroread) 64 bit looks bad

I installed acroread on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit with gdebi (also tried dpkg and via repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"). The result looks bad. For example the open-dialog is out of place, the folder-icons are green and the buttons are not rounded. Actually when I start acroread from the command-line, I get several messages and warnings: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module" Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" I remember, that I had this problem, whenever I used a 64bit-Ubuntu (even Ubuntu 12.04), but not when I used a 32bit-Ubuntu.

PC3200 RAM in Older Computer?

Hello all, I am inheriting a Dell Dimension 8200, but it needs RAM to get up and running. I have PC3200 sticks lying around, but I am not sure how to go about figuring out if the RAM is compatible, as RAM has always confused me. Here is the Dell Dimension 8200 Tech Specs: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm For RAM, it says: Memory type PC800 (non-ECC) I don't know if that is just the kind that comes with it, and I can put in PC3200 (I think, if it worked, this would run at the lower rating? Is that true?), or if that means only PC800 is compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet for a list of products and a bunch of factors to rate each one on, and I'm using Conditional Formatting to set the color of the cells in the individual attribute columns. It looks something like this: I want to fill in the rating column for each item with a color, based on the color ratings of its individual attributes. Examples of ways to determine this: the color of the category in which the item scored worst the statistical mode of the category colors the average of the category ratings, where each color is assigned a numerical value How can I implement any or all of the above rules? (I'm really just asking for a quick overview of the relevant Excel feature; I don't need step-by-step instructions for each rule.)

How can I change the icon in Thunderbird's "New Mail" popup?

When I recieve new mails in Thunderbird a popup-message tells me about that. Does anyone know where this icon is stored and how it is named? I want to change it that it fits the Faenza-theme. I use Thunderbird 10.0.2 with following addons (all preinstalled): EDS Contact Integration 0.3.9 Global Menu Bar integration 2.0.2 Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher integration 0.8.3 Update: The Addons don't have any influence on the icon - I checked this by disabling them. I downloaded the source code and scanned it for the icon. I found it as comm-release/mail/themes/gnomestripe/mail/icons/new-mail-alert.png: Since I couldn't find this file (I searched for the name) on my PC I guess it is somehow built into Thunderbird and protected against changes. Or should there be an easy solution (not to built your own deb-file)? (In the same manner I'd like to change downloadIcon.png in Firefox: )

Unbuntu 10.04 installed from Windows 7 (Wubi filesystme), Now Ubuntu is not booting giving this error. Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init fount. Try passing init= bootarg. There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?

Why does Ubuntu 10.10 show blank screen during startup?

When I try to login to Ubuntu 10.10 I get a flickering screen for a second showing - Ubuntu 10.10 ............. and then I get a blank purple coloured screen[Ubuntu's theme colour] which doesn't progress any further Can anybody suggest a remedy to this problem? From whatever questions I searched in various Ubuntu Forums it seems like this problem is likely caused by a missing NVIDIA Display Driver[which is being used in my Sony Vaio Laptop] update in Ubuntu releases If that's the case then how can I update my NVIDIA Display Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 without being able to log into the Ubuntu 10.10?

Has anyone used Genetify for A/B testing

I'm working on a small project that will likely run on Wordpress, I always like to run some split testing to improve conversion rates for various goals. Typically if its a small site that I either don't have a budget for or want to keep it as inexpensive as possible I use Google Website Optimizer if I do have a budget I go with Visual Website Optimizer both are great and affordable, but for fun I was checking out alternatives and found Genetify which is an open source project and has some neat features. In searching around I don't see many people talking about it and wondered if anyone here has used it. If so what do you think about it?

juju: How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm? Do you use a standard form to gather requirements from a customer prior to making a website? If so what are the questions you ask? For example Purpose of Website: (sell products, reduce number of enquires, reduce work load, etc) Do you have you’re an existing logo? (can you send it via email) Do you have a preferred font for the website text? Do you have a colour theme for your logo, business cards, shop you would like to keep on the website Do you have photos you can provide of your Products? etc Ofcause it would need to be tweaked slightly for each customer but I was looking for a generic document as a baseline.

Can I use WUBI as an offline installer? I already had the .iso file of ubuntu 12.10 - i386, and inside the iso is wubi.exe. For example: I will do a partition of, E:30gb then i will target E: in wubi so that it will be Ubuntu then use the .iso file to install it on E: My Computer: Acer Aspire 5750-6683 i5-2450m processor Is it fine to do a dual boot? Can I run Windows 7 Home Premium OS, with the custom theme and boot screen, can that effect dual booting? I just don't want to damage any of files or either any of OS And if I can't boot any of the operating systems what should I do? Can I avoid doing a clean install if that ever happens?

Pointers to implementing a taxonomy system?

I am taking part in the development of a PHP CMS (yeah I know you are like, meeh). It is currently using simple tags for tagging content. What I want to do is push the whole thing to using Taxonomy but I am not sure on what to pay attention to, or how to go about structuring the whole vocabularies/terms. I'd love to be able to keep the user interaction close to that of the current simple tags and at the same time allow for more advanced usage by power users. The Drupal and the Wordpress taxonomy systems are being reviewed at the moment and they provide valuable resources. Nevertheless, it could be that someone has some simpler and more appropriate thoughts on this matter.

I have a website, and I want to host it on my own computer, but I'm wondering if it's good enough. The website check`s if the user is logged in and then displays 15 items (title, description) from a mysql database and the rating (stored in another database) and the comments (another database) for each item. It also displays some stats (number of items, comments). I also have an image for each item. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.90 GHz RAM memory: 4.00GB Windows 7 64bit So what do you think, how much visitors and items could it handle (at once or daily) ? My internet connection is good, around 7-10 mb upload and same download speed

Hide from google while developing

I will be building a (wordpress) web site. While I am developing, other team members will be pushing content. I'd like to have it hidden from google while under development. It will be hosted on godaddy. I have thought of not pointing the domain name to it until live and using "preview dns", or buying a static IP during development. Or hosting dev site in a sub-directory ("/dev/") until ready and then moving it up a level. If in the dev directory I'd add htaccess or robots.txt to not crawl. Is any of this a bad idea? Will google penalize for any of this - like search by IP and then associate that with the domain later on? Any better ideas?

Should I be concerned about hAtom tags on my blog?

I am using a theme that automatically adds hatom-entry, hatom-feed classes on my WordPress blog. I read that such tags/classes should be used for syndicated content. Anyway, then I ran a Rich Snippet Tool, which threw a "HAtomfeed" error. So I removed a "hfeed" div tag. Now, should I be concerned? Can this cause any problems? I still have a couple of these classes (listed below), and I just hope they do not effect my site's ranking. For now, these are the tags the Rich Snippet Tool has detected: hatom-feed hatom-entry: entry-title: entry-content: published: author: fn: person-name: url: Appreciate your help! I read about how to enable and disable services in Ubuntu and it seems that there are different possibilities manage theme? The first method i found is update-rc.d to add new services to startup, which aims on the /etc/init.d folder and it's contents. The other one i found is the way to edit .conf the files in /etc/init folder. What's the recommended way to enable / disable / add services and why? New Silverlight 4 Themes available–get the raw bits
