Considering that I have a list of installed packages. /home/*/.thumbnails /home/*/.cache /home/*/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/Cache /home/*/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/OfflineCache /home/*/.local/share/Trash /home/*/.gvfs/ /tmp/ /var/tmp/ not real folders but can cause severe problems when 'restoring' /dev /proc /sys What about... /var/ in general? /var/backups/ - can get quite large /var/log/ - does not require much space and can help for later comparison /lost+found/

  • Altering a Column Which has a Default Constraint

    Setting up a default column is a common task for  developers.  But, are we naming those default constraints explicitly? In the below  table creation, for the column, sys_DateTime the default value Getdate() will be allocated. CREATE TABLE SampleTable (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime DEFAULT getdate() ) We can check the relevant information from the system catalogs from following query. SELECT sc.name TableName, dc.name DefaultName, dc.definition, OBJECT_NAME(dc.parent_object_id) TableName, dc.is_system_named  FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id and results would be: Most of the above columns are self-explanatory. The last column, is_system_named, is to identify whether the default name was given by the system. As you know, in the above case, since we didn’t provide  any default name, the  system will generate a default name for you. But the problem with these names is that they can differ from environment to environment.  If example if I create this table in different table the default name could be DF__SampleTab__Sys_D__7E6CC920 Now let us create another default and explicitly name it: CREATE TABLE SampleTable2 (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime )   ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ADD CONSTRAINT DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate DEFAULT( Getdate()) FOR Sys_DateTime If we run the previous query again we will be returned the below output. And you can see that last created default name has 0 for is_system_named. Now let us say I want to change the data type of the sys_DateTime column to something else: ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date This will generate the below error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object ‘DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate’ is dependent on column ‘Sys_DateTime’. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime failed because one or more objects access this column.     I run a small crawler on a virtual ubuntu server, initiated by crontab hourly. Datetime is inserted by defaulting the date filed to TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. Table creation looks like this: CREATE TABLE links (page TEXT, link TEXT, date TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, PRIMARY KEY(page,link)); The datetime gets stored fine, but it one hour off (one hour behind) Norwegian time (GMT +1). The server is located where-ever, I just need it to be on GMT+1. By typing datein the ssh session I get: Wed Dec 19 17:26:02 CET 2012 and that is correct (just now). So where does sqlite3 get it's time from? What must I do to set the time so that sqlite3 gets the time right?

    I am a Dutch user and prefer the my local date & time format, system wide. I have no trouble speaking or understanding English and find it very useful to have the rest of my system configured in English to make my life easier when I need to Google a term, for example. Is it possible to apply the a local date/time/currency/etc. format to the system, while maintaining English menu & dialog captions?     The original date of June 30, 2011 where FASB and IASB would align/converge major areas of accounting has been extended to the end of 2011. They will still meet the June 2011 date for many "urgently required" projects but some projects will not come until the second half of 2011. The reason for this is to allow more time for due diligence, review and consensus. Will this delay the U.S. adoption to IFRS? According to Ms. Schapiro, no, it will not; she is confident that the decision to adopt IFRS in the U.S. will be decided by 2011. I personally hope so because I fear that if the decision is delayed further, it might seep into the 2012 presidential election which could delay the adoption further.     I just added a disk, with partitions but none of them are mounted. The disk will still spin up every now and then. it goes like this: ### disk spins up hdparm -Y /dev/sdb;date /dev/sdb: issuing sleep command 9 feb 2011 23.37.08 CET ### disk spins up hdparm -Y /dev/sdb;date /dev/sdb: issuing sleep command 9 feb 2011 23.46.12 CET Also it always spins up when I shut down the computer. Any tips are welcome, e.g. how can I figure out which process is accessing the disk, are there any daemons doing this? I know it isn't a cron job.

  • What's the difference between Microsoft's MCSD and MCPD certications?

    I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference? Are the MCPD certifications going to be updated after July?

  • Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

    I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this?   • Apple New Year alarm bug cause

    As many people know, Apple has a bug in their iPhone that prevented alarms from going off at 1st and 2nd of January 2011. What is strange is how that bug might happen - i.e., as far as I know this bug happens in all timezones and nobody is switching off DST on Jan 1st, so it's not timezone or DST-related. Also, Jan 1st seems to be nothing special as a UNIX timestamp, so something like sign change or integer overflow can't be the reason. It is highly improbably that alarm code has something like if(date == JANUARY_1_2011 || date == JANUARY_2_2011) turn_alarms_off(); - that would be a sabotage and not a bug. So the question is - could you imagine and describe a bug that would cause the alarm to fail exactly at Jan 1st and 2nd everywhere while letting it work otherwise, without specifically referring to those exact dates? Of course, if somebody knows the real cause, that would be a definite answer, but if nobody knows it - I think it is interesting to think what might be the cause of such strange bug.

  • Changing my Sun SCJP certification to an Oracle one?

    I hold a Sun SCJP from ten years ago or so. At first it was supposed to be a temporary certification (valid for a few years, I don't remember exactly: all I remember is that I had an expiration date on my certification card) then Sun changed their mind and decided the SCJP was lifetime valid. Another SCJP programmer told me I could change my cert so I contacted Sun (there was a procedure for that that I don't remember either) and received my new SCJP (without any expiration date). Now that Oracle bought Sun I was wondering: can I get somehow a Oracle/Sun SCJP paper/card/badge whatever knowing that I do own a SCJP? If anyone here holding an old SCJP changed it to an Oracle/Sun one (if such a thing exist), I'd be interested to hear what can be done. (btw I'm new here so I cannot create a new tag: maybe someone with more rep could create a Sun tag?)

  • Registering domain during christmas holydays

    One of the domain names I tried to register previously has been blocked by a domain grabber two days prior to my own attempt. That was about 1 year ago. The attempt to buy the domain from that person failed due to a totally exaggerated price. So I dropped the issue and watched the domain (offered at sedo.com). As expected there were no more offers, the domain was not sold. Now I learn from the whois database that the registration of that domain name ends on 25.12.2012 (christmas holyday). This raises two questions for me, I fail to find reliable answers on the internet. So maybe someone experienced here can drop a statement or a hint: is it reasonable that the domain name in question really will be free again when that date mentioned in the whois database up to when the domain is registered has passed? I certainly know that the registration can be prolonged, that is not what I mean. I expect (hope) that that domain grabber does not extend the registration, since it costs money and effort and he failed to sell the domain. Provided this is the case and the domain registration is not prolonged, is that date mentioned reliable? Or might it just be some 'default' date? I would like to try to register that domain name as soon as it is unregistered. Since that domain grabber registered that domain only two days before my own registration attempt I would like to prevent such annoying interference next time. So I ask myself: is it possible to register a domain name on a holyday? I mean not to send an email to my provider to do so on that day or before, but to actually have to process taking place as not to wait for 1-2 days after the unregistration? My own provider which I am very happy with does not offer such service on a holyday (which is perfectly understandable). They are 'still checking' if they can offer something automatic. I researched and did not find an answer to the question if that is possible at all. Is an autoomatic registration attempt on a holyday possible? Where can I do that? Is that reliable?
