  • Memory randomization as application security enhancement?

    - by Paul Sasik
I recently came upon a Microsoft article that touted new "defensive enhancements" of Windows 7. Specifically: Address space layout randomization (ASLR) Heap randomization Stack randomization The article went on to say that "...some of these defenses are in the core operating system, and the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler offers others" but didn't explain how these strategies would actually increase security. Anyone know why memory randomization increases security, if at all? Do other platforms and compilers employ similar strategies?

  • Database maintenance, big binary table optimization

    - by jgemedina
Hi i have a huge database, around 1 TB in size, most of the space is consumed by a table which stores images, the tables has right now almost 800k rows. server response time has increased, i would like to know which techniques should i use or you recomend, partitioning? o how to reorganize the table every row is accessed by the image id column, and it has its clustered index by that column, and every two days i reorganize the index and every 7 days i rebuild it, but it seems not to be working any suggestions?

  • Mercurial permament delete?

    - by Arnis L.
I commit some 3rd party tools that i decided not to use afterwards and removed them from hg again. Thing that i dislike - they are still kept in history. Normally this is a good thing of course, but for this particular case - that's just a waste of space. What are options to intentionally mess around with hg repository history and weed it out?

  • What are possible causes of IDirect3DVertexBuffer9::Lock failing?

    - by Suma
In error reports from some I have quite often seen following behaviour: IDirect3DVertexBuffer9::Lock fails, returned error code is D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE. Once this happens, quite frequently (but not always) it is followed by CreateTexture or CreateVertexBuffer failing with error D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY. What are possible reasons for vertex buffer lock failure? Could virtual memory address space exhausted, or what?

  • Does the number of rows in mysql table matter?

    - by 1s2a3n4j5e6e7v
I'm coming up with a web app which will want me to store more than 80 Lakh (8 million) rows. Will it be fine to handle those many number of rows with MySQL without having any performance degradation? Assume my RAM to be 4 GB and Infinity GB Harddisk space. Also, the main fields have been indexed.

  • writing to an ioport resulting in segfaults...

I'm writing for an atmel at91sam9260 arm 9 cored single board computer [glomation gesbc9260] Using request_mem_region(0xFFFFFC00,0x100,"name"); //port range runs from fc00 to fcff that works fine and shows up in /proc/iomem then i try to write to the last bit of the port at fc20 with writel(0x1, 0xFFFFFC20); and i segfault...specifically "unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address fffffc20. I'm of the mind that i'm not allocating the right memory space... any helpful insight would be great...

  • Using jQuery to gather all text nodes from a wrapped set, separated by spaces

    - by Bungle
I'm looking for a way to gather all of the text in a jQuery wrapped set, but I need to create spaces between sibling nodes that have no text nodes between them. For example, consider this HTML: <div> <ul> <li>List item #1.</li><li>List item #2.</li><li>List item #3.</li> </ul> </div> If I simply use jQuery's text() method to gather the text content of the <div>, like such: var $div = $('div'), text = $div.text().trim(); alert(text); that produces the following text: List item #1.List item #2.List item #3. because there is no whitespace between each <li> element. What I'm actually looking for is this (note the single space between each sentence): List item #1. List item #3. List item #3. This suggest to me that I need to traverse the DOM nodes in the wrapped set, appending the text for each to a string, followed by a space. I tried the following code: var $div = $('div'), text = ''; $div.find('*').each(function() { text += $(this).text().trim() + ' '; }); alert(text); but this produced the following text: This is list item #1.This is list item #2.This is list item #3. This is list item #1. This is list item #2. This is list item #3. I assume this is because I'm iterating through every descendant of <div> and appending the text, so I'm getting the text nodes within both <ul> and each of its <li> children, leading to duplicated text. I think I could probably find/write a plain JavaScript function to recursively walk the DOM of the wrapped set, gathering and appending text nodes - but is there a simpler way to do this using jQuery? Cross-browser consistency is very important. Thanks for any help!

  • Building proper link with spaces

    - by Joel
Hello, I have the following code in Python: linkHTML = "<a href=\"page?q=%s\">click here</a>" % strLink The problem is that when strLink has spaces in it the link shows up as <a href="page?q=with space">click here</a> I can use strLink.replace(" ","+") But I am sure there are other characters which can cause errors. I tried using urllib.quote(strLink) But it doesn't seem to help. Thanks! Joel

  • What's the best way to draw a fullscreen quad in OpenGL 3.2?

    - by Phineas
I'm doing ray casting in the fragment shader. I can think of a couple ways to draw a fullscreen quad for this purpose. Either draw a quad in clip space with the projection matrix set to the identity matrix, or use the geometry shader to turn a point into a triangle strip. The former uses immediate mode, deprecated in OpenGL 3.2. The latter I use out of novelty, but it still uses immediate mode to draw a point.

  • C Language - \n - creating virus

    - by sagar
#include<stdio.h> #include<conio.h> union abc { int a; int x; float g; }; struct pqr { int a; int x; float g; } ; void main() { union abc b; struct pqr c; clrscr(); b.a=10; textbackground(2); textcolor(6); cprintf(" A = %d",b.a); printf("\nUnion = %d",sizeof(b)); printf("\nStructure = %d",sizeof(c)); getch(); } Now, Save this program as virus.cpp ( or any name that you like ) I am using Turbo C comiler to complie this program & run from trubo c. ( Ctrl + F9 ) I don't know weather to ask this question at stack over flow or at super user. I am using Windows 7 & I have installed Avira AntiVir virus system. I am not here for any kind of advertisement of microsoft or antivirus system. I am just here for solution of my query. When I tried to run above program - It creates a worm (DOS/Candy). I believe there is nothing wrong in program. Oke.. Now here is something special. Execute the same program with following difference. Here the only difference is space between \n #include<stdio.h> #include<conio.h> union abc { int a; int x; float g; }; struct pqr { int a; int x; float g; } ; void main() { union abc b; struct pqr c; clrscr(); b.a=10; textbackground(2); textcolor(6); cprintf(" A = %d",b.a); printf("\n Union = %d",sizeof(b)); printf("\n Structure = %d",sizeof(c)); getch(); } The difference is only \n and space. Question is "Why my simple program is detected as virus?? " Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge. Sagar.

  • How to represent "{{" in a django template?

    - by rxin
I'm trying to output in bibtex format in Django and the template looks like this: @{{ pubentry.type }{, author = {{% for author in pubentry.authors.all %}{{ author.first_name }} {{ author.middle_name }} {{ author.last_name }}{% if not forloop.last %} and {% endif %} {% endfor %}}, title = {{{ pubentry.title }}}, journal = {{{ pubentry.journal }}} } The problem is with the "{{{" or "{{%". One way to go around the problem is to add a space after the first "{", but that kind of tamper the format. What's the right way to escape { in Django templates?

  • numerical computation locks up ruby

    - by kolosy
i'm trying to implement an id obfuscation scheme, with a simple hash borrowed elsewhere. i've added a method on the application helper: @@M_ID = 2**31-1 @@PRIME = 1580030173 @@PRIME_INVERSE = 59260789 # (calculated from MAXID and PRIME offline) def obfuscate_id(x) if x return ((x * @@PRIME) & @@M_ID) else x end end for some reason, whenever this is called, ruby locks up, and starts eating up disk space on my mac... like - gigs of it. any ideas?

  • Does UrlDecode handle plus (+) correctly?

    - by harpo
According to RFC 2396, The plus "+", dollar "$", and comma "," characters have been added to those in the "reserved" set, since they are treated as reserved within the query component. Indeed, search this site for "plus + comma , dollar $", and you get http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=plus+%2B+comma+,+dollar+$ Plus is only encoded (by the application) when it's not being used as a delimiter. But as others have observed, .NET's UrlDecode function converts plus to space. Where is this behavior specified?
