• How to set up an environment for android app development?

  I have been researching for sometime now regarding the process to install android sdk and associated tools . After visiting Android Developers page, i first installed the android sdk and then installed eclipse plugins for my indigo version from the install softwares options.However, it is mentioned in the developers page : Download the Android SDK. Install the ADT plugin for Eclipse (if you’ll use the Eclipse IDE). Download the latest SDK tools and platforms using the SDK Manager. I have downloaded the sdk and installed the adt plugins for eclipse.I just need to point the eclipse towards the location of the sdk. However, i am stuck at the last step which is asking me to download the latest tools using the sdk manager. The manager interface pops up and i see a lot of options there. I don't know which ones i must select and install. If some one can help me out here and tell me which options to choose and install(if possible, with a screen shot), it will be very beneficial for me.

• Will search engines reindex a page that has been set to redirect on to a newer site page?

  We were asked by a client to change a website so that any pages/Urls we were hosting on an older site would now redirect to a newer site hosted somewhere else and a different domain name to boot. We did this by changing each page in the IIS site management, to redirect to a url on their new domain instead of rendering a page locally. According to the redirect tool here: http://www.webconfs.com/redirect-check.php . What we have done is search engine friendly. Problem now is... the client has been on a course learning all about meta tags and so thinks they have a better understanding of the "matrix" (remember there is no spoon). As Google still has the older site appearing in a search, this isnt helping matters. I have tried to explain, we have to wait for Google to reindex. I'm not blowing smoke am I? I'm now starting to wonder... will the older site always appear in a search, even though the pages don't exist? Is there a better way I should be redirecting their site to ensure google will stop keeping an index of pages that no longer exist and would instead replace them with the content in the newer site? a suggestion on the site mentioned above is to use the code: Response.Status="301 Moved Permanently" Response.AddHeader "Location","http://www.new-url.com/" Does using the option in the IIS management tool to redirect the url not do the same?

• How can I set up FakeRAID/SoftRAID using mdadm without losing data?

  There is RAID0 of 2 drives connected through Silicon Image 3132 SATA SoftRAID controller. Under Windows it was partitioned as one dynamic GPT-disk having 4 TB NTFS volume. There is a lot of music and movies on the drive. I'm trying to get him to be seen under Ubuntu as a single disk, not as 2 by 2 terabytes. I tried to read it through dmraid, had no success, it is not displayed in /dev/mapper. Also tried to configure the kernel, but did not find anything suspicious, the driver for my controller was on. There is also a driver from the manufacturer, but it is only available for RHEL and SLES. Here it's reported that SoftRAID is supported by the kernel, but apparently not completely. If I thrust drives in the AMD controller, built into the motherboard, the drive is seen as a single, but the data is lost. I know about mdadm that it is able to ditch all the information on the disks. So, is it possible to somehow create an array without actually recording information on used drives and to make the system correctly identify sections on it later? Information about the array: /dev/sdf - Disk 0 /dev/sdg - Disk 1 Array type: Stripe Block Size: 64KB Also, a device /dev/md1 is created using command mknod /dev/md1 b 9 1

• VWD 2008 Express : where can i set absolute positioning as a default?

  So when I used Visual Web Developer 2005 Express edition, in the ribbon there was a menu option for "Layout", which you could go through and select positioning and set absolute to default. I am using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express now, and I see that you can select format from the menu bar, and set position absolute, for each individual control that you add to the design surface, but is there a place I can just set absolute as the default, like in 2005? • update-apt-xapian-index uses 100% CPU, even when Update Manager is set to not check for updates

  I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

I get a red squiggly under set saying that I can not override because it does not have a set accessor. Why is this aproblem? What should I do?

• How do I shutdown 12.10 when ACPI is set to OFF?

  I recently installed 12.04 on an HP Spectre XT ultrabook. I installed 12.04 from a USB. When the install was complete, and the computer restarted, I got a blank screen. After some searching, I found that I had to choose "acpi=off" during the installation, which now shows up in the grub screen. Once I was on 12.04, I upgraded to 12.10. The issue now is that when I hit shutdown, the computer hangs on a purple shutdown screen. Usually, at this point, I press the power button on the machine to completely power off the machine. I am new to ubuntu, and would appreciate the help. Thanks.

• How to set up simple VPN for secure Internet connections over unencrypted Wi-Fi on Windows?

  I'm looking for a solution similar to the one in this question, except that I don't have a linux computer. I have windows computers that could be set up to accept VPN connections. Preferably I want to set this up on either Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. I'd like to connect different devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, laptops, etc.) that are on open unsecure wireless networks (e.g. the one's you see at places like Starbucks) to this VPN to ensure that all my data is secure. I found an article that shows that you can enable VPN connections on Windows XP. After following those steps, though, I'm not sure what to do. Which ports do I open on my firewall? Which VPN settings do I use on my devices such as the iPhone? Do I use L2TP, PPTP, or IPSec? What's the difference between these? Are there any other steps missing in that tutorial? I'm hoping that since Windows has this built in feature, that it will be much simpler to set up rather than having to deal with setting up something such as OpenVPN. If I follow those settings and enable port forwarding on port 1723, and then use the following settings on the iPhone: PPTP (IP Address) RSA SecurID: Off Encryption Level: Auto Send All Traffic: On Proxy: Off It shows "Connecting..." then "Disconnecting..." and the following error message: VPN Configuration A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator. I'm using a user account that I enabled privileges to in the VPN settings on the Windows machine.

• How do browsers/PHP handle characters outside the set characterset?

  I'm looking into how characters are handled that are outside of the set characterset for a page. In this case the page is set to iso-8859-1, and the previous programmer decided to escape input using htmlentities($string,ENT_COMPAT). This is then stored into Latin1 tables in Mysql. As the table is set to the same character set as the page, I am wondering if that htmlentities step is needed. I did some experiments on http://floris.workingweb.nl/experiments/characters.php and it seems that for stuff inside Latin1 some characters are escaped, but for example with a Czech name they are not. Is this because those characters are outside of Latin1? If so, then the htmlentities can be removed, as it doesn't help for stuff outside of Latin1 anyway, and for within Latin1 it is not needed as far as I can see now...

I would like my program to have A digital clock to count for 60 seconds in the top of my Console. Print a math problem in the middle of my console wait for my input. When 60 seconds is done, stop the math problem challenges immediately (most of time, it is still waiting for my input, but we will stop it immediately). • Any way to set up a grid for a board game in cocos 2d?

  My first idea was to create a 2d array for my columns and rows, but it seems like there should be a better, or possibly cleaner, way to achieve this. Each square on the grid is going to have a background image, probably a .png although I might just draw the images with a draw method. Basically, I want to be able to drag and drop images onto the individual grid squares. I've been searching for a solution and the closest thing I can find is the tiled map solution. That just seems like a little overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish. Also, I don't know if this helps but i need my grid to be 12 by 12 and take up the entire width of the iphone screen.

• Simple way to set up port knocking on Linux?

  There are well known benefits of Port Knocking utilities when utilized in combination with firewall IP table modification. Port Knocking is best used to provide an additional layer of security over other tools such as the OpenSSH server. I would like some help setting it up on a ubuntu server. I looked at some port knocking implementations here: PORTKNOCKING - A system for stealthy authentication across closed ports. IMPLEMENTATIONS http://www.portknocking.org/view/implementations fwknop looked good. I found an Android client here. And fwknop (both client and server) is in the ubuntu repos. Unfortunately, setting it up (on the server) looks difficult. I do not have iptables set up. My proficiency with iptables is limited (but I understand the basics). I'm looking for a series of simple steps to set it up. I only want to open the SSH port in response to a valid knock. Alternatively, I would consider other port knocking implementations, if they are much simpler to set up and the desired Linux and Android clients are available.

The solution is the same now as it was then, but since I had a new OS install I didn't recreate the fix. • Developing Schema Compare for Oracle (Part 6): 9i Query Performance

  All throughout the EAP and beta versions of Schema Compare for Oracle, our main request was support for Oracle 9i. After releasing version 1.0 with support for 10g and 11g, our next step was then to get version 1.1 of SCfO out with support for 9i. However, there were some significant problems that we had to overcome first. This post will concentrate on query execution time. When we first tested SCfO on a 9i server, after accounting for various changes to the data dictionary, we found that database registration was taking a long time. And I mean a looooooong time. The same database that on 10g or 11g would take a couple of minutes to register would be taking upwards of 30 mins on 9i. Obviously, this is not ideal, so a poke around the query execution plans was required. As an example, let's take the table population query - the one that reads ALL_TABLES and joins it with a few other dictionary views to get us back our list of tables. On 10g, this query takes 5.6 seconds. On 9i, it takes 89.47 seconds. It's also having to process far more data. What on earth could be causing this huge difference in query cost? After trawling through the '10g New Features' documentation, we found item 1.9.2.21. Before 10g, Oracle advised that you do not collect statistics on data dictionary objects. From 10g, it advised that you do collect statistics on the data dictionary; for our queries, Oracle therefore knows what sort of data is in the dictionary tables, and so can generate an efficient execution plan. On 9i, no statistics are present on the system tables, so Oracle has to use the Rule Based Optimizer, which turns most LEFT JOINs into nested loops. This drops the execution time down to 24 seconds. Not as good as 10g, but still an improvement. There are still several problems with this, however. 10g introduced a new join method - a right outer hash join (used in the first execution plan). The 9i query optimizer doesn't have this option available, so forcing a hash join means it has to hash the ALL_TABLES table, and furthermore re-hash it for every hash join in the execution plan; this could be thousands and thousands of rows. And although forcing hash joins somewhat alleviates this problem on our test systems, there's no guarantee that this will improve the execution time on customers' systems; it may even increase the time it takes (say, if all their tables are partitioned, or they've got a lot of materialized views). Ideally, we would want a solution that provides a speedup whatever the input. To try and get some ideas, we asked some oracle performance specialists to see if they had any ideas or tips. Their recommendation was to add a hidden hook into the product that allowed users to specify their own query hints, or even rewrite the queries entirely. However, we would prefer not to take that approach; as well as a lot of new infrastructure & a rewrite of the population code, it would have meant that any users of 9i would have to spend some time optimizing it to get it working on their system before they could use the product. Another approach was needed. All our population queries have a very specific pattern - a base table provides most of the information we need (ALL_TABLES for tables, or ALL_TAB_COLS for columns) and we do a left join to extra subsidiary tables that fill in gaps (for instance, ALL_PART_TABLES for partition information). All the left joins use the same set of columns to join on (typically the object owner & name), so we could re-use the hash information for each join, rather than re-hashing the same columns for every join. To allow us to do this, along with various other performance improvements that could be done for the specific query pattern we were using, we read all the tables individually and do a hash join on the client. Fortunately, this 'pure' algorithmic problem is the kind that can be very well optimized for expected real-world situations; as well as storing row data we're not using in the hash key on disk, we use very specific memory-efficient data structures to store all the information we need. This allows us to achieve a database population time that is as fast as on 10g, and even (in some situations) slightly faster, and a memory overhead of roughly 150 bytes per row of data in the result set (for schemas with 10,000 tables in that means an extra 1.4MB memory being used during population).   In USC, after I submit a review, my display name is "Bnxdcty"... a swell name, but where did it come from? I have checked the ubuntu single sign on page, verified my nickname on there, changed it to something else and back again for good measure, but still my reviewer name is somehow still "Bnxdcty". I even unauthorized ubuntu software center and then re-opened it/authorized it to my account. Does this just appear as this to me and others see my correct user nickname? It doesn't bother as much as it confuses me. I just know it will be something stupid that everyone knows but me.

• JBoss as a windows service. Where can i set the JAVA_OPTS?

  hi. I'm running JBoss as a windows service, but i can't seem to find where i can configure the JAVA_OPTS to make it work properly. I need to set the Xms and the Xmx. I have tried to just run JBoss manually (run.bat) and in the same file i set the JAVA_OPTS= -Xms128m -Xmx512m. And that works. • Need to set up shared storage for Guest virtual machines that are running on a Xen host

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network. How to implement the selected solution for question #1? Any tutorials / guidelines / ebooks will be a great help and highly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

• How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI
