• [Ruby on Rails] how to add a new entry with a multiple has_many association?

  I am not sure am I doing these correct. I have 3 models, Account, User, and Event. Account contains a group of Users. Each User have its own username and password for login, but they can access the same Account data under the same Account. Events is create by a User, which other Users in the same Account can also read or edit it. I created the following migrations and models. Is this setting correct? Every time when a user create a new account, the system will ask for the user information, e.g. username and password. How can I add them into correct tables? How can I add a new event? I am sorry for such a long question. I am not very understand the rails way in handling such data structure. Thank you guys for answering me. :)

• Methods specific only to an instance? What are they called in Ruby?

  I know there are "instance methods", "class methods" but what are these types of methods called, for eg: s1 = "This is my STRING!" def s1.m1 downcase end p s1 # => "This is my STRING!" p s1.m1 # => "this is my string!" What type of method is the "m1" method called on the s1 "instance" of the "string" class? It's really weird because I didn't know this was possible at all if I try: s2 = "This is ANOTHER string" s2.m1 # => Won't work! Which kind of makes sense, but not sure why defining methods like m1 on instances on a class are useful at all.

  I have a simple array: arr = ["apples", "bananas", "coconuts", "watermelons"] I also have a function f that will perform an operation on a single string input and return a value. This operation is very expensive, so I would like to memoize the results in the hash. I know I can make the desired hash with something like this: h = {} arr.each { |a| h[a] = f(a) } What I'd like to do is not have to initialize h, so that I can just write something like this: h = arr.(???) { |a| a => f(a) } Can that be done?

• Is there a Ruby on Rails framework like equivalent for .NET development?

  Answers like ASP.NET MVC or Entity Framework really aren't acceptable as they address just one aspect of the problem domain. I'm looking for a framework ... a REAL framework that gives me the same features out of the box that Rails does. As such it should include at minimum: MVC for presentation ORM Ability to provide simple configuration for whatever environment (dev, QA, Production, etc...) Migration like functionality Ability to generate code in all layers (similar to scaffolding like behavior, etc...) • How can I define the search scope by "this week" meaning Monday - Friday in Ruby on Rails?

  This is an extension of an earlier question. I realized, what I really want is to go to a URL /report/thisweek and it will do a .find (or named_scope) across contact_emails.date_sent where date_sent is between MONDAY and FRIDAY of the week to which Date.today belongs. In other words, if today is THURSDAY, it will do a search for all emails MONDAY through THURSDAY of this week. Not sure if this is doable or makes sense, but I think that's what I'd ultimately am trying to do. Thanks!

This led to another question, Which variables (if any) survive across web requests and does that change depending on deployment? (Fastcgi, Mongrel, Passenger, ...) I know that Controller instance variables aren't persisted. I know Constants are persisted (or reloaded?). But I don't know about class variables, instance variables on a class, Eigenclasses, ...

• Ways to Unit Test Oauth for different services in ruby?

  Are there any best practices in writing unit tests when 90% of the time I'm building the Oauth connecting class, I need to actually be logging into the remote service? I am building a rubygem that logs in to Twitter/Google/MySpace, etc., and the hardest part is making sure I have the settings right for that particular provider, and I would like to write tests for that. Is there a recommended way to do that? If I did mocks or stubs, I'd still have to spend that 90% of the time figuring out how to use the service, and would end up writing tests after the fact instead of before...

• In ruby on rails, is it possible to do a sum query with group by using the find_each batching?

  I'm loading data from my database and I'm doing a sum calculation with a group by. ElectricityReading.sum(:electricity_value, :group => "electricity_timestamp", :having => ["electricity_timestamp = '2010-02-14 23:30:00'"]) My data sets are extremely large, 100k upwards so I was wondering if its possible to use the find_each to batch this to help with memory overhead. I can write the batching manually use limit and offset I guess but I'd like to avoid that if the code already exists.

  I've got a file INPUT that has the following contents: 123\n 456\n 789 I want to run my script like so: script.rb < INPUT and have it convert the contents of the INPUT file to an array, splitting on the new line character. So, I'd having something like myArray = [123,456,789]. Here's what I've tried to do and am not having much luck: myArray = STDIN.to_s myArray.split(/\n/) puts field.size I'm expecting this to print 3, but I'm getting 15. I'm really confused here. Any pointers?

• Xenserver 5.5 U2 a bit unstable with an unstable W2003 VM

  In the last week I had to reboot the host system twice and the second one by means of the power button. The system is a Dell PE 6950 (4 Opteron dual core, 2,8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, 900 GB disk in a RAID 10 array composed by 4 450GB 15000 rpm disks) with XenServer 5.5 U2. We're installing it and at now there are working in production a 2003 32 bit Windows server VM with 2 GB RAM, 3 vcpu and about 200 GB disk in 4 partition (12 GB boot, 20 GB program, 80 GB user data, 80 GB other data). The first time I was compressing many Windows 2003 folders (some tens GB by means of W2003 compressed folder option) from a Windows remote console and some hours before my colleague installed Backup Exec agent that was alredy installed and that required a reboot (that was pending). The console stopped responding, it was no more possible to connect by means of remote console or by means of the console of the XenCentre, it was still possible from the network to use the shared folder of the VM and the programs on it (2 db and a GIS program), but the print server didn't work any more and I couldn't give remote reboot from other domain controller hosts. I couldn't stop the virtual machine neither from the XenCentre, neither from the command line of the host also forcing the reboot. I had to reboot the host server. Yesterday it has been worst. I installed a template of another VM, CentOS 5.3 and then, put the DVD in the drive of the host. Then, before the install and after the boot I checked for defect the DVD and the W2003 VM began to respond slowly (I was connected by means of an administration remote console) the task manager showed only mid or low load, it is, only the first of the 3 vcpu was loaded (about 70%), while the other two were about at 20% and also the disk I/O was not so heavy. Then the users were not so happy because they couldn't any more use the MS word docs on the server. I immediately stopped the check of the DVD (to do that I had to force the stop of such Centos 5.3 VM), then some users could again use their docs, but other had still problems, so I decided to reboot the VM, but it doesn't stopped, neither from XenCenter, neither from command line, neither forcing the reboot. Then I tried to reboot of the host, but it didn't worked, neither from the XenCentre, neither from the host prompt (shutdown -r now as root: it told that it was shutting down, but then it didn't did that). So I had to power off by means of the power button of the server (before I tried some Magic SyS REQ, but I saw that Xen isn't compiled with this option enabled). What could you suggest about my problem, what can I look, search and see? In the W2003 VM logs there are no errors or warning to explain what happened. • Can't install a ruby gem because of an error?

  Hey there, trying to install a ruby gem but I keep getting the following error: ERROR:failed to build gem native extension /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby extconf.rb mkmf.rb can't find header files for ruby at/System/ Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/ruby.h I'm not exactly sure what is happening here. Is there anyone that knows what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks!

• Weird execution of ruby/git executables in Windows

  Something strange has happened. I can't run some command line executables in Windows anymore. Steps: Open cmd Run an executable, such as ruby -v or git -h When I do that, a new command prompt opens, running that command (I think, it's too fast to see), and instantly closes again. I've managed to print screen the new command prompt, and it shows that it's running inside this path: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\3582-490 Inside this folder, is the executable I'm tring to run. If I run ruby, then ruby.exe is in there. If I run git, then git.exe is in there. And it's always emptying the folder in between, so there is always just one .exe file

• Kate gives out debug messages on the console from which it is started

  I am new to Linux. I use Ubuntu 11.04. Whenever I open a file with kate from the commandline, with 'kate &' (or without ampersand), Kate starts out giving messages on the console. It continuously gives them out as I save a file or close one. They look like debug messages to me (sample below). I have used Synaptic package manager to install Kate. Uninstalling and installing the dev version did not make any change. Soon my console becomes cluttered. Is there a way to suppress these messages? There was nothing explicit in Kate settings either.   I am trying to get the debug version of httpd so I can use it in conjunction with gdb. I am having a hard time getting them, and they don't seem to be in the standard epel-debuginfo repository. • How can I debug a port/connectivity issue?

  I am running a simple WebSocket server on Amazon EC2 (Fedora Core). I've opened the relevant port using ec2-authorize, and checked that it's opened. Iptables is definitely not running. However I can't connect to the port from outside EC2. I've tried the following (my server is running on port 7000): telnet ec2-public-dns.xx.xx.xx.amazon.com 7000 (from within EC2: connects fine) nmap localhost (output includes line: 7000/tcp open afs3-fileserver) telnet ec2-public-dns.xx.xx.xx.amazon.com 7000 (this time from my local machine: I get "connection refused: Unable to connect to remote host") The strange thing is this: if I start Nginx on port 7000 then it works and I can connect from outside EC2! And the WebSocket server fails on port 80, where Nginx works fine. To me this suggests a problem with the WebSocket server, BUT I can connect to it successfully from within EC2. (And it works fine on a different VPS account). How can I debug this further? If anybody can stop me tearing my hair out, I'd be very grateful indeed :)

  My database queries from Django are starting to take 1-2 seconds and I'm having trouble figuring out why. Not too big a site, about 1-2 requests per second (that hit Django; static files are just served from nginx.) The thing that confuses me is, I can replicate the slowness in the Django shell using debug mode. But when I issue the exact same queries at an sql prompt they are fast. It takes about a second for a query to return, but when I check connection.queries it reports the time as under 10 ms. Here's an example (from the Django shell): >>> p = PlayerData.objects.get(uid="100000521952372") >>> a = time.time(); p.save(); print time.time() - a 1.96812295914 >>> for d in connection.queries: print d["time"] ... 0.002 0.000 0.000 How can I figure out where this extra time is being spent? I'm using Apache+mod_wsgi in daemon mode, but this happens with just the django shell as well, so I figure it is not apache-related.
