• C++ - Resources in static library question

  Hello! This isn't a duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/531502/vc-resources-in-a-static-library because it didn't help :) I have a static library with TWO .rc files in it's project. When I build my project using the Debug configuration, I retrieve the following error (MSVS2008): fatal error LNK1241: resource file res_yyy.res already specified Note, that this happens only in Debug and Release library builds without any troubles. The command line for Resources page in project configuration looks the same for every build: /fo"...(Path here)/Debug/project_name.res" /fo"...(Path here)/Release/project_name.res" and I can't understand what's the trouble. Any ideas? UPDATE I don't know why this happens, but when I turn "Use Link-Time Code Generation" option on the problem goes away. Could somebody explain why does this happen? I feel like MS-compiler is doing something really strange here. Thanks.

• Debug assertion does not prompt in IIS 7

  Hi, since moving to Windows 7 (IIS 7.5), the debug assertions do not prompt a pop up dialog anymore. I have tested this in a separate project, and noticed that they do work when using the integrated Visual Studio Developer server (Cassini) but they do not work when using IIS Web Server. This is a big issue for us since we are counting on debug assertions to identify potential programming errors, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Eyal.

  We're seeing lots of virtual memory fragmentation and out of memory errors and then it hits the 3GB limit. The compilation debug is set to true in the web.config but I get different answers from everyone i ask, does debug set to true cause each aspx to compile into random areas of ram thus fragmenting that ram and eventually causing out of memory problems?

  We have a strange problem in our team. When a developer is using Eclipse in Debug mode, MS SQL Server 2005 blocks other developers from accessing a stored procedure. Debug session typically involves opening Hibernate session to persist an entity which could be accessing a stored procedure used for Primary key generation. Debugging is done in business logic code and rarely in JDBC stored procedure call. Is there any way to configure MS SQL server or the stored procedure so that other developers are not blocked?

  Hi, I am doing this iPhone app that works fine on the simulator. However, when I run it on a device in debug mode, it just crash without any error messages. How can I debug that? I heard about a flag we can set to help with this kind of situation but not sure what that flag is and how to set it.   I don't know if I'll pass all the necessary information here, but I've only been asked to post this question here and I'm not entirely onto the matter. There is a .NET Framework 2.0 application compiled in the Debug mode with the parameter jitDebugging set to true in app.config <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" /> After any crash we get the dialog box allowing us to send a report or to debug the program. When we choose to debug and select proper VS, the IDE starts but with the announcement: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. and Disassembly cannot be displayed in run mode. Is there any possiblity to see the code or the spot where the crash has occured?

• Cannot debug in visual studio 2008

  I recently reopened a project and on trying to debug the breakpoint only shows as a red circle and gives the following message "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document" I notice there are no PB files in the bin directory. I presume I need to rebuild the debug files. Does anybody know how to go about this? Any help much appreciated.

  I just made a fresh Windows 8.1 install and am trying to set-up a VM for kernel debugging. Therefore, I need to create a serial link to debug the VM using windbg. Usually I just simply add a new COM port and use it as a named pipe. However, I can't find any way to add this hardware. There is nothing relevant on the "add hardware list". It would be great if I could view what Types/Instances are registered in the container, but I can't see where this is stored when using QuickWatch.   I am trying to get mongrel cluster working on my Ubuntu Server Karmic box in preparation to setup Capistrano. I've been trying to get the two to work all day and finally decided to completely remove Capistrano and see if I can just get Mongrel Cluster to work. I ran this to install mongrel cluster: gem install mongrel mongrel_cluster Everything installed fine, when I change into my app's directory... # mongrel_rails -bash: mongrel_rails: command not found I can run it from its install location: # /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/mongrel_rails Usage: mongrel_rails <command> [options] Available commands are: ...   My situation is that I need to proxy traffic to the root of my web server to port 81 for IIS, and then any traffic to a sub-directory needs to be directed to the rails app. my-server.com/ - needs to proxy to port 81 my-server.com/myapp - needs to point to the rails app This seems to be working alright for the rails application but the images, javascripts, and stylesheets are not actually working (proxied). I've tried to fiddle with the proxypass lines but it still doesn't work for me..can anyone help? • pg_dump not working - do I need to change order of $PATH?

  I'm trying to set the $PATH to pick up the latest version of pg_dump as I'm currently getting a mismatch error while doing a migrate in my Rails app (I recently changed the schema type to SQL). I have added a new file in /etc/profile.d called pg_dump.sh, and inside that put: PG_DUMP=/usr/pgsql-9.1 export PG_DUMP PATH=$PATH:$PG_DUMP/bin export PATH On looking at echo $PATH, I get: /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/bin:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194@global/bin:/usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p194/bin:/usr/local/rvm/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/pgsql-9.1/bin:/root/bin And I still get the error. • Help trying to figure out why IIS7 is crashing / locking up / denying connections

  Hi folks, I've got a pretty busy website that is running on a single web front end machine, on W2K8 + IIS7. Every now and then - eg. maybe monday at 3am or something, then a few days later .. some early morning time .. then nothing for 2 weeks ... etc - the website fails to respond to any client connections. ie. no one can connect to the website. I can remote desktop to the machine, etc no probs. I restart the app pool (the website is running in intergrated mode), still nothing. I try and get a crash dump of the process (it's around 600 mb maybe even more) ... that fails after about a min of trying (and i have plenty of HD space). The only way to fix this issue, is to manually stop the www service and then start it again. The stopping takes a while (a minute?) while starting is nearly instant. I'm at a loss to figure out what part of my code is causing this. At first, I thought it might be a stack overflow because of some error that might be going to the error page, which in turn errors .. rinse repeat boom. But i've had a look at the error page and it feels ok. So, I'm hoping someone might be able to help and say how I can correctly get a proper dump of the IIS process so i can then do some more autopsy on it. I would email Tess Ferrandez (the goddess of crash debuging) but I thought I'd try here before I spam her. Can anyone have any suggestions to how I can figure out how to start to debug this issue?

• Relative path incorrect in the view layer when hosting a rails3 app in a subdirectory using passenger and apache

  I want to host multiple Rails apps on a multiple server using sub-directories. And have encountered some relative path problems. I have made a symbolic link to the app's public directory and placed it in the /var/www/html directory, var/www/html/ /test_app (symbolic link to the public folder of test_app) and set apache as so LoadModule passenger_module /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-3.0.12/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-3.0.12 PassengerRuby /usr/local/bin/ruby <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.com DocumentRoot /var/www/html Options Indexes FollowSymLinks -MultiViews RailsBaseURI /test_app </Location> </VirtualHost> The links in the app itself works just fine, all the links acknowledge the test_app/ directory and work, however, when it comes to showing images in the public directory in the view, the relative path goes wrong. Say I have /system/files/1/aaa.png it goes looking for it in /var/www/html/system/files/1/aaa.png rather than /var/www/html/test_app/system/files/1/aaa.png As far as I understand this is an Apache setting problem than something to be done in Rails, if its possible I would prefer to have it contained in the conf file of apache rather than having to alter the code.

• My PC suddenly reboots

  Yesterday I opened my PC hub (after like, 5 years) to add more RAM and a new HDD. It was full of dust and balls of fluff, so I cleaned it a bit by blowing. I also removed the fan that was attached to the motherboard (I think it's there to cool the processor) and I cleaned it also by blowing and with a paintbrush, then put it back where it was (it had 4 weird plastic screws, it wasn't easy). Then I added 2 x 2Gib of RAM (Kingston 1333MHz), and the new HDD (Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 3). I couldn't find another wire like the one my first disk had, which was thicker, but there was one that was more flat, so I plugged it and it worked fine (I also plugged the wire that I think is for the data, which looks like many little wires glued together). I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and in the new disk I've just installed Windows 7. Between yesterday and today, two reboots ocurred while working on Ubuntu. I haven't used Windows 7 that much so I don't know if it will happen there too. So where can I begin to debug this?

• Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. • How to evaluate the quality of Rails code?

  In a code review, what do you look for to assess a developer's expertise? Given an opportunity to look at a developer's work on a real-world project, what tell-tale signs are a tip-off to carelessness or lack of experience? Conversely, where do you look in the code to find evidence of a developer's skill or knowledge of best practices? For example, if I'm looking at a typical Rails app, I would be happy to see the developer is using RSpec (showing a commitment to using test-driven development and knowledge that RSpec is currently more popular than the default TestUnit). But in examining the specs for a Rails model, I see that the developer is testing associations, which might indicate a lack of real understanding of Rails testing requirements (since such tests are redundant given that they only test what's already implemented and tested in ActiveRecord). More generally, I might look to see if developers are writing their own implementations versus using widely available gems or if they are cleaning up code versus leaving lots of commented-out "leftovers." What helps you determine the skill of a Rails developer? What's your code quality checklist?

• Best practices for team workflow with RoR/Github for designer + coder?

  My friend and I have started to try to collaborate on some projects. For background, I come from a PHP/Wordpress/Drupal coding background, but recently I've become more experienced with the RoR framework, while he is more experienced as an HTML/CSS designer, working with PHP and WordPress. We're both relatively new to RoR I think, and so we're trying to figure out our collaborative workflow, but we have no idea where to start. For instance, we were trying to figure out how he could do some minor edits to the CSS file without having to do a full RoR deploy on his box. We still haven't figured out a solution, so I think it's best if we start to set some sort of workflow based on best practices. I was wondering if you guys have any insight or links to articles/case studies regarding this topic?
