• How many layers are between my program and the hardware?

  I somehow have the feeling that modern systems, including runtime libraries, this exception handler and that built-in debugger build up more and more layers between my (C++) programs and the CPU/rest of the hardware. I'm thinking of something like this: 1 + 2 OS top layer Runtime library/helper/error handler a hell lot of DLL modules OS kernel layer Do you really want to run 1 + 2?-Windows popup (don't take this serious) OS kernel layer Hardware abstraction Hardware Go through at least 100 miles of circuits Eventually arrive at the CPU ADD 1, 2 Go all the way back to my program Nearly all technical things are simply wrong and in some random order, but you get my point right? How much longer/shorter is this chain when I run a C++ program that calculates 1 + 2 at runtime on Windows? How about when I do this in an interpreter? (Python|Ruby|PHP) Is this chain really as dramatic in reality? Does Windows really try "not to stand in the way"? e.g.: Direct connection my binary < hardware?

• Dynamic data validation in ASP.NET MVC

  I've recently read about the model validation capabilities of ASP.NET MVC which are all very cool until a certain point. What happens if the application doesn't know the data that it works with because it is all stored in DB and built together at runtime. Just like in Drupal, I'd like to be able to define custom types at runtime, and assign runtime validation rules as well. Obviously, the idea of assigning attributes to well established models is now gone. What else could be done ? I am thinking in terms of rules being stored as JSON objects in the DB fields or something like that.

  I'm trying to have classes serialized using MS runtime and Mono runtime. While using MS runtime everything goes fine, but using Mono I give me some exception and program startup. The following exception are thrown: There was an error reflecting a type: System.TypeInitializationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a type: System.InvalidOperationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a field: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException < 0 (an array of classes) The binary was compiled using MS SDK, but I don't think this is the problem. What's going on? .NET shouln't be portable? How to solve these exceptions?

  For some reason the following code doesn't work on Windows XP. new URL("file://" + tempfile.getAbsolutePath()); I'm using Java 1.6.   I've been experimenting with Instruments off and on for a while and and I still can't do the following (with any sensible results): determine or estimate the average runtime of a function that's called many times. For example if I'm driving my gameLoop at 60 Hz with a CADisplayLink I'd like to see how long the loop takes to run on average... 10 ms? 30 ms etc. I've come close with the "CPU activity" instrument but the results are inconsistent or don't make sense. The time profiler seems promising but all I can get is "% of runtime"... and I'd like an actual runtime.

  Many programming language runtime environments use stacks as their primary storage structure (e.g. see JVM bytecode to runtime example). Quickly recalling I see following advantages: Simple structure (pop/push), trivial to implement Most processors are anyway optimized for stack operations, so it is very fast Less problems with memory fragmentation, it is always about moving memory-pointer up and down for allocation and freeing complete blocks of memory by resetting the pointer to the last entry offset. Is the list complete or did I miss something? Are there programming language runtime environments which are not using stacks for storage at all?

  My project allows users to create custom css for our flex app. In regards to compiling the CSS into SWFs on the server side: Should I use the flex2.compiler.css.Compiler class in mxmlc-3.5.0.12683.jar? Or Should I invoke mxmlc from Runtime.getRuntime().exec()? The css.Compiler class is not very well documented. Does anyone have any examples that use this? • What is the best free or low-cost Java reporting library (e.g. BIRT, JasperReports, etc.) for making

  I want to print, email and write to PDF very simple reports. The reports are basically a list of items, divided in various sections/columns. The sections are not necessarily identical. Think newspaper. I just wasted a solid 2 days of work trying to make this kind of reports using JasperReports. I find that Jasper is great for outputing "normalized" data. The kind that would come out of a database for instance, each row neatly describing an item and each item printed on a line. I'm simplifying a bit but that's the idea. However, given what I want to do I always ended up completely lost. Data not being displayed for no apparent reason, columns of texts never the correct size, column positioning always ending up incorrect, pagination not sanely possible (I was never able to figure it out; the FAQ gives an obscure workaround), etc. I came to the conclusion that Jasper is really not built to make the kind of reports I want. Am I missing something? I'm ready to pay for a tool, as long as the price is reasonable. By reasonable I mean a few $100s. Thanks. EDIT: To answer cetus, here is more information about the report I made in Jasper. What I want is something like this: text text text text ------------------- text | text text |---------- text | text text | text --------| text text |---------- text | text What I made in jasper is this: (detail band) subreport | subreport ------------------------------------ subreport | subreport ------------------------------------ subreport | subreport The subreports are all the same actual report. This report has one field (called "field") and basically just prints this field in a detail band. Hence, running a single subreport simply lists all items from the datasource. The datasource itself is a simple custom JRDatasource containing a collection of strings in the field "field". The datasource iterates over the collection until there are no more strings. Each subreport has its own datasource. I tried many different variations of the above, with all sorts of different properties for the report, subreports, etc. IMO, this is fairly simple stuff. However, the problems I encounter are as follows: Subreports starting from the 3rd don't show up when their position type is 'float'. They do show up when they have 'fix relative to top'. However, I don't want to do this because the first two subreports can be of any length. I can't make each subreport to stretch according to its own length. Instead, they either don't stretch at all (which is not desirable because they have different lenghts) or they stretch according to the longest subreport. This makes a weird layout for sure. Pagination doesn't happen. If some subreports fall outside the page, they simple don't show. One alternative is to increase the 'page height' considerably and the 'detail band height' accordingly. However, in this case it is not really possibly to know the total height in advance. So I'm stuck with calculating/guessing it myself, before the report is even generated. More importantly, long reports end up on one page and this is not acceptable (the printout text is too small, it's ugly/non-professional to have different reports with different PDF page lengths, etc.). BTW, I used iReport so it's possibly limitations of iReport I'm listing here and not of Jasper itself. That's one of the things I'm trying to find out asking this question here. One alternative would be to generate the jrxml myself with just static text but I'm afraid I'll encounter the very same limitations. Anyway, I just generally wasted so much time getting anything done with Jasper that I can't help thinking its not the right tool for the job. (Not to say that Jasper doesn't excel in what it's good at).

• What is the role of asserts in C++ programs that have unit tests?

  Greetings, I've been adding unit tests to some legacy C++ code, and I've run into many scenarios where an assert inside a function will get tripped during a unit test run. A common idiom that I've run across is functions that take pointer arguments and immediately assert if the argument is NULL. I could easily get around this by disabling asserts when I'm unit testing. But I'm starting to wonder if unit tests are supposed to alleviate the need for runtime asserts. Is this a correct assessment? Are unit tests supposed to replace runtime asserts by happening sooner in the pipeline (ie: the error is caught in a failing test instead of when the program is running). On the other hand, I don't like adding soft fails to code (eg: if(param == NULL) return false;). A runtime assert at least makes it easier to debug a problem in case a unit test missed a bug.   Hi, I am trying to get my head around the way shared libraries work in the c++ unix environment. I understand we only need header files and no shared libraries specification when compiling code. But if I want to create an executable or shared library from my compiled files, do I need to specify shared library dependencies (those are dynamic)? And do the paths of shared libraries need to match the path at runtime loading? I am using Linux 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux I am having a problem where my code is not able to pick up a library at runtime. I have tried setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH. But at runtime when I run the executable, I get the following error: Error: librc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Sam

• Should member variables of global objects be made global as well?

  I'm developing plugins in Eclipse which mandates the use of singleton pattern for the Plugin class in order to access the runtime plugin. The class holds references to objects such as Configuration and Resources. In Eclipse 3.0 plug-in runtime objects are not globally managed and so are not generically accessible. Rather, each plug-in is free to declare API which exposes the plug-in runtime object (e.g., MyPlugin.getInstance() In order for the other components of my system to access these objects, I have to do the following: MyPlugin.getInstance().getConfig().getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); , which is overly verbose IMO. Since MyPlugin provides global access, wouldn't it be easier for me to just provide global access to the objects it manages as well? MyConfig.getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); Any thoughts? (I'm actually asking because I was reading about the whole "Global variable access and singletons are evil" debates)

• Determine version of dll linked against

  According to this article, the version of a referenced dll is embedded in the exe file. Using ProcExp, I can see that the runtime loaded dll is indeed the latest dll available on my machine, but I'm interested to know the linked version. As a side note, I built the project using the VS9 msbuild, and interested in the VC runtime (msvcr90.dll) version. In the VC9 redist folder it is 9.0.30729.1, runtime the .4926 is loaded. My questions are: Is there any tool with which I can extract the dll version linked to (from the dll/exe)? Which version does VS link to by default? The one found in its redist folder? Thank you.

• Is it possible that an C++ application use CRT 4053 when the manifest uses 762?

  My application is compiled on a development PC with a manifest 762: However at runtime, on another release PC, the application uses the 4053 version of the file. c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_x-ww_e6967989\MSVCR80.DLL Somewhere along the execution of my application I get a runtime error pointing to the msvcr80.dll. I suspect that the problem might be caused because the application use a DLL at runtime that was not used during the build. If I check in the WinSxS folder of the release PC I have both 762 and 4053 version of the CRT. Why does the application uses 4053 instead of the one used in the manifest? Thanks.

  I know there are three retention policies for Java annotations: CLASS: Annotations are to be recorded in the class file by the compiler but need not be retained by the VM at run time. RUNTIME: Annotations are to be recorded in the class file by the compiler and retained by the VM at run time, so they may be read reflectively. SOURCE: Annotations are to be discarded by the compiler. And although I understand their usage scenarios, I don't get why it is such an important thing to specify the retention policy that retention policies exist at all. I mean, why aren't all the annotations just kept at runtime? Do they generate so much bytecode / occupy so much memory that stripping those undeclared as RUNTIME does make that much difference?
