• MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.

• 12.04 sound keeps auto-muting when idle

  I just installed 12.04 on an HP8510W. Everything works fine except for one weird behavior which I have noticed. When ever there is no audio playing, the audio mute indicator on the laptop is on. As soon as I start playing a you tube video the mute indicator turns off and I get sound. Here is my pulse audio output which says that the sink is suspended because it is idle: Welcome to PulseAudio! • Building a Repository Pattern against an EF 5 EDMX Model - Part 1

  I am part of a year long plus project that is re-writing an existing application for a client.  We have decided to develop the project using Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5.  The project will be using a number of technologies and patterns to include Entity Framework 5, WCF Services, and WPF for the client UI.This is my attempt at documenting some of the successes and failures that I will be coming across in the development of the application.In building the data access layer we have to access a database that has already been designed by a dedicated dba. The dba insists on using Stored Procedures which has made the use of EF a little more difficult.  He will not allow direct table access but we did manage to get him to allow us to use Views.  Since EF 5 does not have good support to do Code First with Stored Procedures, my option was to create a model (EDMX) against the existing database views.   I then had to go select each entity and map the Insert/Update/Delete functions to their respective stored procedure. • Zotero error in libreoffice

  I installed Zotero standalone in 12.10 64bit. Some problems which I managed to fix. The one that remains is an error saying "openoffice.org could not communicate with Zotero. make sure zotero standalone or Firefox are open and set to an online state and try again". That's when I click any button in the Zotero toolbar in libreoffice. Firefox doesn't open with a the plugin installed and a working internet connection. The Zotero troubleshooting which mentions this error was of no help to me. I find reports about this bug going back as far as 2009 but I haven't found anything of help.

• External classes positions don't work?

  I have an external class which reads the user's mouse clicks. I gave a position where the user have to click, and when the user clicks on that position, it would turn my boolean "mouse" to true. But when I connect that to my game(state based) class, it does not work. • How to safely and painlessly switch from Kubuntu to Lubuntu?

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. So, I investigate the modeswitch problem and get The following packages have unmet dependencies: usb-modeswitch : Depends: usb-modeswitch-data (>= 20110227-1~) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. But: Reading state information... Done usb-modeswitch-data is already the newest version. So, my question is: what actions should I take in order to obtain a clean and fresh installation of Lubuntu? And also, how do I safely remove all the kubuntu-desktop-related stuff?

  In Ubuntu 12.04 and previous versions, I can easily install smbfs and running smb://server/share from Nautilus works! But, in 12.10, I can't install smbfs. • Using google maps as an input method

  I'm wondering if it's possible to use gmaps pretty much as a type of input. Normally for Location a user has to enter: street address town/city state/province postal code country This seems too clunky to me, does anyone here know of a more elegant process? My perfect address-entering interface is a gmaps search bar with a map under it. When the user clicks a marker instead of a speech bubble containing location information they get one containing a submit button or equivalent. I'm not sure anything like this has been implemented before.

• How can I obtain in-game data from Warcraft 3 from an external process?

  I am implementing a behavior algorithm and would like to test it with my lovely Warcraft III game to watch how it will fight against real players. The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to obtain information about in-game state (units, structures, environment, etc.) from the running WC3 game. My algorithm needs access to the hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3's editor language) isn't appropriate; I need to run my algorithm from a separate process. Direct3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and a significant drawback of that approach would be the inability to watch how the AI performs online, since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How I read in-game data from WC3 in a different process in a fastest and easiest way?

• Ubuntu 11.0 HDMI Video Card No 5.1 Audio

  I am using Ubuntu and XMBC on my HTPC and have chosen the Radeon HD5570 Video card which has an HDMI output. In the sound preferences there is no surround sound option for the video card just stereo and although I can get sound through it in XBMC, my receiver does not state Dolby Digital on movies that are in fact Dolby so its definitely not giving me the true sound it should. Does this card not support surround sound through HDMI and I somehow missed it? If that is the case does anyone have suggestion that has been tested and works? Id like to know its going to work before investing in yet another video card.

• Xubuntu LightDM shows blank screen half the time

  System info: (will be amended if any more info is asked for) My laptop runs Xubuntu 12.10. As it has a Solid State Drive, /tmp, /var/tmp, /var/log and /var/log/apt are set to tmpfs in the /etc/fstab file - in case this makes any difference. Problem My problem is quite simple. Approximately 50% of boot attempts end in the mouse cursor on a black screen (presumably LightDM failing to load), forcing me to restart and try again. I can access the CTRL+ALT+F1 terminal to reboot the machine, but it's very annoying having to boot and reboot two or three times before one works. Oh, and this problem is the same whether I use the Xubuntu or Unity greeter. Thanks for any help you can give.

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.

I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that i can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Does Google Tag Manager help with this? • Ubuntu doesn't start and I can't login

  My ubuntu 13.04 doesn't boot anymore. Eternal black screen. If I press ALT+CTRL+F1 I see that it's stucked on "Checking battery state [OK]." I'd like to try to go with sudo apt-get install gdm but I can't login on terminal tty2, tty3 etc. They correctly ask for my nickname, then they make me wait a lot, ask for password and make me wait again. After a lot of time (... a lot) the best I could achieve was visualizing "Documentantion https://help.ubuntu.com". I can never reach the point where I can give commands. Plus, during the long pauses, every 2 minutes it gives a messagge like this: INFO: task XXX blocked for more than 120 seconds. Any suggestion? Sorry for my bad english and thanks everyone for the attention.

• Music player that uses an alarm function with multiple time settings

  I have tried many different players searching for one with a specific feature that I would think would be easy. Simply, I want to play MP3 primarily. I would like to play a radio stream on Thursdays from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, then return to playing MP3. Also, because I am in the Husker state, I would like to program another stream to start at game time on Saturdays and end several hours later, resuming my MP3 play until 11:00 am Thursday. Does anyone have a simple solution for me?

• Determine how to display a tile based on surrounding tiles

  I have a game engine which generates maps randomly, set on a 2d grid which is composed of 34px square graphical tiles. These tiles can be displayed in any of three ways, wall, corner, and floor(exists in 2 states, passable and impassible), and four directions, north, south, west and east. What I need to do is, based on the tiles around each individual tile, determine which state to display the tile in, e.g. north wall, northeast corner, floor so that when a player alters the map, the tiles around the affected tile adjust themselves to suit(i.e. tunneling). In case it becomes important, all gameobjects are inherited from the same class, whether they be players, NPC's, walls, or items.

• After 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade, can only login via Classic (No Effects)

  Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, everything seemed to go okay until immediately after login: the desktop goes into a "corrupted" looking state (similar to having too high resolution set). I can see some kind of movement by moving the mouse around/right clicking, and can enter text terminals via ctrl + alt + f1 It does this in both plain "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic", and only seems to login/startup properly with Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). I have checked my video card (Radeon X600) and run the unity support test which passes with all "yes" results (Unity supported: yes): /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p I have tried re-installing my Ubuntu desktop: rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop With no success. I can workaround for now with Classic (No Effects), but I'd really like to find the root problem. Any suggestions on what else to try would be appreciated!

• Need help with a method to randomly lay mines in a minesweeper game

  So my Java minesweeper game is represented as a int[][] where -1 represents a mine. When I initialize my game I need to randomly place x amount of mines. What is an elegant way of doing this? I was thinking of using an ArrayList with the coordinates of each cell, randomly selecting it, changing the state of the int[][] and then removing that Point. This would ensure that no point is selected twice. Is there a more elegant way of doing this?

Specifically, I have numerous buttons that will be changing color based on state information from operator input and input from various subcomponents and sensors. I would like to use UML or some other type of design diagrams to be able to capture the color transition. Some folks have suggested sequence diagrams, but I haven't been able to find any good examples that show how to incorporate this design artifact. But I can go into grub command mode by typing 'c'. Now, I want to know what operating system is installed, and the files stored on my computer, so how do I do this? What can I do to maximise the use of this computer in its current state?

• Is it wrong to use a boolean parameter to determine behavior?

  I have seen a practice from time to time that "feels" wrong, but I can't quite articulate what is wrong about it. Or maybe it's just my prejudice. Here goes: A developer defines a method with a boolean as one of its parameters, and that method calls another, and so on, and eventually that boolean is used, solely to determine whether or not to take a certain action. This might be used, for example, to allow the action only if the user has certain rights, or perhaps if we are (or aren't) in test mode or batch mode or live mode, or perhaps only when the system is in a certain state. Well there is always another way to do it, whether by querying when it is time to take the action (rather than passing the parameter), or by having multiple versions of the method, or multiple implementations of the class, etc. My question isn't so much how to improve this, but rather whether or not it really is wrong (as I suspect), and if it is, what is wrong about it.

• VMWare Player pauses often

  I'm using a 64bit Windows 8 inside vmplayer, with 2 virtual processor cores, virtual hard disk resides on a fast local disc and is not preallocated; host CPU is Intel i7 3770, should be capable of hardware virtualisation but I don't know if VMWare uses it; NAT networking; Sound card connected, USB connected, accelerated 3D graphics (NVidia 313.30 on host) My problem is, that the VM often pauses for a few seconds, and then speeds up for a few seconds to reach real time again. Time in the VM actually moves faster after the pause, for example all animations using timers speed up. When running, the vmware-vmx process shows ~150% CPU usage in top, but 0% when pausing (and D state i.e. waiting for IO). iotop shows normal disk writes from vmware-vmx threads, but during pauses, the flush kernel thread uses 99%. Are there some options to try so that VMWare doesn't wait for IO? I've tried a few things available from the GUI but the issue never went away…
