cannot add a user to sysadmin role in SQL Server

I am using SQL Server 2008 Management Studio. The current logon account belongs to machine local administrator group. I am using Windows Integrated Security mode in SQL Server 2008. My issue is, after log into SQL Server Management Studio, I select my login name under Security/Logins, then select Server Roles Tab, then select the last item -- sysadmin to make myself belong to this group/role, but it says I do not have enough permission. Any ideas what is wrong? I think local administrator should be able to do anything. :-)

SQL SERVER – Function to Round Up Time to Nearest Minutes Interval

Though I have written more than 2300 blog posts, I always find things which I have not covered earlier in this blog post. Recently I was asked if I have written a function which rounds up or down the time based on the minute interval passed to it. Well, not earlier but it is here today. Here is a very simple example of how one can do the same. ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[RoundTime] (@Time DATETIME, @RoundToMin INT) RETURNS DATETIME AS BEGIN RETURN ROUND(CAST(CAST(CONVERT(VARCHAR,@Time,121) AS DATETIME) AS FLOAT) * (1440/@RoundToMin),0)/(1440/@RoundToMin) END GO Above function needs two values. 1) The time which needs to be rounded up or down. 2) Time in minutes (the value passed here should be between 0 and 60 – if the value is incorrect the results will be incorrect.) Above function can be enhanced by adding functionalities like a) Validation of the parameters passed b) Accepting values like Quarter Hour, Half Hour etc. Here are few sample examples. What would interfere with changing the default application for opening files on OS X?

I know how to change the default application for opening files. I select a file in Finder, right-click and select Get Info from the context menu. In the file's Info window, expand the Open with: panel. In that panel is a combo box that says, in my case, Adobe Flash CS4. I click the combo box and select Flash Player. It changes. Then I click the Change All... button. A dialog pops up and says: Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application “Adobe Flash CS4”? This change will apply to all documents with extension “.swf”. Cancel/Continue Well, clicking Continue does exactly what the message says. It sets the Finder to open all swf files with Adobe Flash CS4. What is going on? Why doesn't the message say, .... "Flash Player"

How do I grant access to that database as mysql reports a syntax error. e.g. grant select,insert,update,delete on astpp.* to 'portal'@'localhost' identified by 'Ab7g12Xh35' with grant option; works, but grant select,insert,update,delete on astpp-eth01.* to 'portal'@'localhost' identified by 'Ab7g12Xh35' with grant option; Does not. Neither does: grant select,insert,update,delete on 'astpp-eth01'.* to 'portal'@'localhost' identified by 'Ab7g12Xh35' with grant option;

Virtual Box Networking; How to configure bridged networking on Windows 7

I have VirtualBox on Windows 7. I have two virtual machines running RHEL, that work fine when the network is set to NAT. However I want to change the network adapters for the VM's to bridged in stead of NAT. However when I go in to the VM configuration, and select bridged I also need to select an adapter, but there is nothing to select. Apparently I need to install a separate driver/filter on the network adapter. However I don't know where to start. I reinstalled VirtualBox (latest version) but did not see an option to install such driver. What should I do?

Trouble upgrading OS X, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

So I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

I use Finale with the Garritan sounds to convert my music into WAV files; after that I manually load each one into Audacity and select all use the "normalize" effect (with default settings) manually select the silence at the beginning of the file and delete it manually select the silence at the end of the file and delete it finally export the whole thing as an MP3 (with specific tag data) This gets tedious, especially as I work on a ten-movement piece with six part-prominent rehearsal "tapes" to accompany the full-score rendition. And there are too many variations in what's going on for me to trust AutoHotKey for this one. Is there a way to script Audacity, or is there another toolchain that would do what I want? I'm running on a WindowsXP laptop with cygwin installed. Thanks!

Interesting SSMS issue with waittype of PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID

Saw a recent issue with SQL2008 sp 1 where SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) appeared to hang when a DBA expanded the database users tab of a database… ie like this :- When we looked at the waittype of the SSMS session - via sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks– it was waiting on PREEMPTIVE_OS_LOOKUPACCOUNTSID. I’d not come across this waittype before, and there was very little information out on the web for it.. Looking at this issue using SQL Profiler – it them became apparent that SSMS was waiting on the function SUSER_SNAME. I did a quick test using SET STATISTICS TIME to prove it was the SUSER_SNAME function causing our issue :- SELECT * FROM sys.database_principals -- completes in 6 milliseconds SELECT SUSER_SNAME(sid),* FROM sys.database_principals -- completes in 188941 milliseconds. suser_sname validates a sid against Active Directory.. What I haven’t mentioned so far is that the database in question had been restored from a server on a different domain. This domain was untrusted from the current domain. However, it appeared that SSMS was still trying to validate the Windows login of each user when displaying the users list…. and taking a long time to return NULL for each user from the untrusted domain. When all users that had a login from the untrusted domain are removed from the database – this fixed the issue. To find out the users that had this issue :- SELECT name FROM sys.database_principals WHERE type_desc IN(‘WINDOWS_USER’, ‘WINDOWS_GROUP’) and SUSER_SNAME(sid) IS NULL Although I have not raised this as a case with MS – I do think this is a bug in SSMS – I do not see why windows logins should need to be validated when displaying only user details..

SQL SERVER – Excel Losing Decimal Values When Value Pasted from SSMS ResultSet

No! It is not a SQL Server Issue or SSMS issue. It is how things work. There is a simple trick to resolve this issue. It is very common when users are coping the resultset to Excel, the floating point or decimals are missed. The solution is very much simple and it requires a small adjustment in the Excel. By default Excel is very smart and when it detects the value which is getting pasted is numeric it changes the column format to accommodate that. Now as Zero which are training any digit after decimal points have no value, Excel automatically hides it. To prevent this to happen user has to convert columns to text format so it can preserve the formatting. Here is how you can do it. Select the corner between A and 1 and Right Click on it. It will select complete spreadsheet. If you want to change the format of any column you can select an individual column the same way. In the menu Click on Format Cells… It will bring up the following menu. Here by default the selected column will be General, change that to Text. It will change the format of all the cells to Text. Now once again paste the values from SSMS to the Excel. This time it will preserve the decimal values from SSMS. Solved! Any other trick you do you know to preserve the decimal values? changing timezone with dpkg-reconfigure tzdata and debconf-set-selections

I want to set up a script that automatically changes the timezone on a machine (running ubuntu 11.10) and also sets the right values to the debconf database. I've tried the following, but it does not work (at the end, the current timezone remains unchanged, and if I run manually the dpkg-reconfigure tzdata command, the selected values are indeed the old ones): #!/bin/sh -e echo "tzdata tzdata/Areas select Europe" | debconf-set-selections echo "tzdata tzdata/Zones/Europe select Madrid" | debconf-set-selections echo "tzdata tzdata/Zones/America select " | debconf-set-selections dpkg-reconfigure -f noninteractive tzdata So, by now, I'm doing it messing with the files /etc/localtime and /etc/timezone directly, but I'd rather prefer the dpkg-reconfigure and debconf way.

How to Install Windows Media Player 11 on Wine

I am battling to install Windows Media Player 11 on Wine. I have tried the following: Open a Terminal (Applications, Accessories, Terminal) and type "sudo apt-get install wine." This installs Wine Windows Emulator, a free application that allows you to run many Windows programs within Linux. Download Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP (link in Resources) and save it to Ubuntu's desktop. Once downloaded, right-click and select "Open with Wine Windows Emulator." Follow the on-screen prompts for installing it to your system. Go to "Applications" then "Wine," select "Programs" and open "Windows Media Player." Click "File" then "Open" and locate a DRM file you want to play. Select "OK" to load it into Media Player. I installed Wine (Which is step 1). But I am having problems with step 2 (Download Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP (link in Resources) and save it to Ubuntu's desktop). I'm just not finding a way to do it. I may be overlooking the (link in Resources) Can't find it. I am stuck!

Can someone explain what is going on or if these rules are even valid to cause this error? I know it's supposedly a recursion protection.. but these protect against SQL injection so I'm confused.

Why are my Photoshop modify selection tools graying out?

So, I looked into this a little before asking. Basically, I always select the entire canvas, and modify my selection for multiple Photoshop effects. It has never given me problems until just recently. Now, if I select the entire canvas, Photoshop will gray out the modify selection options. People online claimed that you can't select the entire canvas, but that is how I've been doing it for years. So, does anyone know how to stop the selections from graying out? I don't want to have to expand my canvas each time I want to create borders, etc. I need a work around, a method, anything that will stop these options from graying out like they currently are. Thanks.

SQL SERVER – Using RAND() in User Defined Functions (UDF)

Here is the question I received in email. “Pinal, I am writing a function where we need to generate random password. While writing T-SQL I faced following issue. Everytime I tried to use RAND() function in my User Defined Function I am getting following error: Msg 443, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RandFn, Line 7 Invalid use of a side-effecting operator ‘rand’ within a function. Here is the simplified T-SQL code of the function which I am using: CREATE FUNCTION RandFn() RETURNS INT AS BEGIN DECLARE @rndValue INT SET @rndValue = RAND() RETURN @rndValue END GO I must use UDF so is there any workaround to use RAND function in UDF.” Here is the workaround how RAND() can be used in UDF. The scope of the blog post is not to discuss the advantages or disadvantages of the function or random function here but just to show how RAND() function can be used in UDF. RAND() function is directly not allowed to use in the UDF so we have to find alternate way to use the same function. This can be achieved by creating a VIEW which is using RAND() function and use the same VIEW in the UDF. Here is the step by step instructions. Create a VIEW using RAND function. CREATE VIEW rndView AS SELECT RAND() rndResult GO Create a UDF using the same VIEW. Boot problems w/ External HDD

I'm having a problem with booting a live image off of a USB Hard Drive. I used Startup Disk Creator to make an Ubuntu 11.10 live image on a partition on my external so that I can use it on various computers. I set it up with ~4GB of persistent data So far I've tried it on two computers. One, a Dell, will boot to my external but it loads the select boot device very slowly. It hangs on a screen with an underscore for up to 5 minutes until it allows me to select which drive I want to boot from. After that, it works great. However, on my primary computer it doesn't work at all. It's an Acer from 2009 and it won't even recognize the drive. I don't see it anywhere in BIOS or the select boot disk list. The light on the external will come on at boot just fine so I know it's powering it at this time. Both computers worked perfectly with my 4GB flash drive that I had partitioned half and half (1st half FAT32 and second Ubuntu 11.10 live)

Selected wrong OS from bootloader settings and now can't do anything

I'm trying to help a friend out with an urgent issue he is having. He has two Windows 7 installations when he was starting up his computer so the bootloader menu was making him select an OS every time he restarted. One installation is functional and the other is not. He wanted to make it so that he did not have to select the correct OS every time he booted up. He chose the wrong (non-functional) operating system in the windows settings and set the time to select an operating system int he bootloader menu to 0 seconds. Now, his computer attempts to boot into a non-working operating system and he has no way of selecting the correct operating system so that he can fix his mistake. What can he do to get into the functional OS so that he can fix his mistake? Thanks so much.

Database Backup History From MSDB in a pivot table

I knocked up a nice little query to display backup history for each database in a pivot table format.I wanted to display the most recent full, differential, and transaction log backup for each database. Here's the SQL :-WITH backupCTE AS (SELECT name, recovery_model_desc, d AS 'Last Full Backup', i AS 'Last Differential Backup', l AS 'Last Tlog Backup' FROM ( SELECT db.name, db.recovery_model_desc,type, backup_finish_date FROM master.sys.databases db LEFT OUTER JOIN msdb.dbo.backupset a ON a.database_name = db.name WHERE db.state_desc = 'ONLINE' ) AS Sourcetable PIVOT (MAX (backup_finish_date) FOR type IN (D,I,L) ) AS MostRecentBackup ) SELECT * FROM backupCTE Gives output such as this :- With this query, I can then build up some straightforward queries to ensure backups are scheduled and running as expected -For example, the following logic can be used ;- - WHERE [Last Full Backup] IS NULL) - ie database has never been backed up.. - WHERE [Last Tlog Backup] < DATEDIFF(mm,GETDATE(),-60) AND recovery_model_desc <> 'SIMPLE') - transction log not backed up in last 60 minutes. - WHERE [Last Full Backup] < DATEDIFF(dd,GETDATE(),-1) AND [Last Differential Backup] < [Last Full Backup]) -- no backup in last day.- WHERE [Last Differential Backup] < DATEDIFF(dd,GETDATE(),-1) AND [Last Full Backup] < DATEDIFF(dd,GETDATE(),-8) ) -- no differential backup in last day when last full backup is over 8 days old.
