  • Problem creating calculations 'engine' in two class java calculator

    - by tokee
    i have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to create a two class java calculator but have been unsuccessful so far in getting it working. i have the code for an interface which works and displays ok but creating a seperate class 'CalcEngine' to do the actual calculations has proven to be beyond me. I'd appreciate it if someone could kick start things for me and create a class calcEngine which works with the interface class and allows input when from single button i.e. if one is pressed on the calc then 1 displays onscreen. please note i'm not asking someone to do the whole thing for me as i want to learn and i'm confident i can do the rest including addition subtraction etc. once i get over the obstacle of getting the two classes to communicate. any and all assistance would be very much appreciated. Please see the calcInterface class code below - import java.awt.*; import javax.swing.*; import javax.swing.border.*; import java.awt.event.*; /** *A Class that operates as the framework for a calculator. *No calculations are performed in this section */ public class CalcFrame implements ActionListener { private CalcEngine calc; private JFrame frame; private JTextField display; private JLabel status; /** * Constructor for objects of class GridLayoutExample */ public CalcFrame() { makeFrame(); //calc = engine; } /** * This allows you to quit the calculator. */ // Alows the class to quit. private void quit() { System.exit(0); } // Calls the dialog frame with the information about the project. private void showAbout() { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(frame, "Group Project", "About Calculator Group Project", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE); } private void makeFrame() { frame = new JFrame("Group Project Calculator"); makeMenuBar(frame); JPanel contentPane = (JPanel)frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout(8, 8)); contentPane.setBorder(new EmptyBorder( 10, 10, 10, 10)); /** * Insert a text field */ display = new JTextField(); contentPane.add(display, BorderLayout.NORTH); //Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane(); contentPane.setLayout(new GridLayout(4, 4)); JPanel buttonPanel = new JPanel(new GridLayout(4, 4)); contentPane.add(new JButton("1")); contentPane.add(new JButton("2")); contentPane.add(new JButton("3")); contentPane.add(new JButton("4")); contentPane.add(new JButton("5")); contentPane.add(new JButton("6")); contentPane.add(new JButton("7")); contentPane.add(new JButton("8")); contentPane.add(new JButton("9")); contentPane.add(new JButton("0")); contentPane.add(new JButton("+")); contentPane.add(new JButton("-")); contentPane.add(new JButton("/")); contentPane.add(new JButton("*")); contentPane.add(new JButton("=")); contentPane.add(new JButton("C")); contentPane.add(buttonPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); //status = new JLabel(calc.getAuthor()); //contentPane.add(status, BorderLayout.SOUTH); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); } /** * Create the main frame's menu bar. * The frame that the menu bar should be added to. */ private void makeMenuBar(JFrame frame) { final int SHORTCUT_MASK = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getMenuShortcutKeyMask(); JMenuBar menubar = new JMenuBar(); frame.setJMenuBar(menubar); JMenu menu; JMenuItem item; // create the File menu menu = new JMenu("File"); menubar.add(menu); // create the Quit menu with a shortcut "Q" key. item = new JMenuItem("Quit"); item.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_Q, SHORTCUT_MASK)); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { quit(); } }); menu.add(item); // Adds an about menu. menu = new JMenu("About"); menubar.add(menu); // Displays item = new JMenuItem("Calculator Project"); item.addActionListener(new ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { showAbout(); } }); menu.add(item); } /** * An interface action has been performed. * Find out what it was and handle it. * @param event The event that has occured. */ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event) { String command = event.getActionCommand(); if(command.equals("0") || command.equals("1") || command.equals("2") || command.equals("3") || command.equals("4") || command.equals("5") || command.equals("6") || command.equals("7") || command.equals("8") || command.equals("9")) { int number = Integer.parseInt(command); calc.numberPressed(number); } else if(command.equals("+")) { calc.plus(); } else if(command.equals("-")) { calc.minus(); } else if(command.equals("=")) { calc.equals(); } else if(command.equals("C")) { calc.clear(); } else if(command.equals("?")) { } // else unknown command. redisplay(); } /** * Update the interface display to show the current value of the * calculator. */ private void redisplay() { display.setText("" + calc.getDisplayValue()); } /** * Toggle the info display in the calculator's status area between the * author and version information. */ }

    - by William
Is there a good J2ME IDE? I mean something lightweight, and portable. Something that can run what you program on it. My favorite Java IDE is JCreator Lite. Is there something like that for J2ME? Also, which would you say is the best J2ME IDE?

  • Using the Jersey client to do a POST operation

    - by Jon
Hello, In a Java method, I'd like to use a Jersey client object to do a POST operation on a RESTful web service (also written using Jersey) but am not sure how to use the client to send the values that will be used as FormParam's on the server. I'm able to send query params just fine. Thanks in advance.

  • How to configure DB connection in a Servlet based JPA application

    - by deamon
By default DB connections of JPA applications are configured in the META-INF/persistence.xml, when the application is not deployed to a full Java EE application server. In my opinion it is not very elegant to place such environment specific configuration into a file that is inside a .war file. How could a DB connection of a Servlet based JPA application be configured more flexible (=outside of the .war file)?

  • Get scanner to include but ignore quoted text?

    - by user1086516
Basically my problem is this, I need to parse text where , is the delimiter but anything in " " quotes should not be checked for a delimiter. Is this what the Scanner.skip method is for? I would check it myself but I don't understand how to write a regex pattern in java where the token is something in between two " ". I also want to include any quoted text in the proper token which was delimited by the valid ,.

  • Java - StackOverflow Error on recursive 2D boolean array method that shouldn't happen.

    - by David W.
Hey everyone, I'm working on a runnable java applet that has a fill feature much like the fill method in drawing programs such as Microsoft Paint. This is how my filling method works: 1.) The applet gets the color that the user clicked on using .getRGB 2.) The applet creates a 2D boolean array of all the pixels in the window, with the value "true" if that pixel is the same color as the color clicked on or "false" if not. The point of this step is to keep the .getRGB method out of the recursive method to hopefully prevent this error. 3.) The applet recursively searches the 2D array of booleans where the user clicked, recording each adjacent point that is "true" in an ArrayList. The method then changes each point it records to false and continues. 4.) The applet paints every point stored in the ArrayList to a user selected color. All of the above steps work PERFECTLY if the user clicks within a small area, where only a few thousand pixels or so have their color changed. If the user selects a large area however (such as about 360,000 / the size of the applet window), the applet gets to the recursive stage and then outputs this error: Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-1" java.lang.StackOverflowError at java.util.ArrayList.add(ArrayList.java:351) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:185) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) at paint.recursiveSearch(paint.java:190) (continues for a few pages) Here is my recursive code: public void recursiveSearch(boolean [][] list, Point p){ if(isValid(p)){ if(list[(int)p.y][(int)p.x]){ fillPoints.add(p); list[(int)p.y][(int)p.x] = false; recursiveSearch(list, new Point(p.x-1,p.y));//Checks to the left recursiveSearch(list, new Point(p.x,p.y-1));//Checks above recursiveSearch(list, new Point(p.x+1,p.y));//Checks to the right recursiveSearch(list, new Point(p.x,p.y+1));//Checks below } } } Is there any way I can work around an error like this? I know that the loop will never go on forever, it just could take a lot of time. Thanks in advance.

  • Java AD Authentication across Trusted Domains

    - by benjiisnotcool
I am trying to implement Active Directory authentication in Java which will be ran from a Linux machine. Our AD set-up will consist of multiple servers that share trust relationships with one another so for our test environment we have two domain controllers: test1.ad1.foo.com who trusts test2.ad2.bar.com. Using the code below I can successfully authenticate a user from test1 but not on test2: public class ADDetailsProvider implements ResultSetProvider { private String domain; private String user; private String password; public ADDetailsProvider(String user, String password) { //extract domain name if (user.contains("\\")) { this.user = user.substring((user.lastIndexOf("\\") + 1), user.length()); this.domain = user.substring(0, user.lastIndexOf("\\")); } else { this.user = user; this.domain = ""; } this.password = password; } /* Test from the command line */ public static void main (String[] argv) throws SQLException { ResultSetProvider res = processADLogin(argv[0], argv[1]); ResultSet results = null; res.assignRowValues(results, 0); System.out.println(argv[0] + " " + argv[1]); } public boolean assignRowValues(ResultSet results, int currentRow) throws SQLException { // Only want a single row if (currentRow >= 1) return false; try { ADAuthenticator adAuth = new ADAuthenticator(); LdapContext ldapCtx = adAuth.authenticate(this.domain, this.user, this.password); NamingEnumeration userDetails = adAuth.getUserDetails(ldapCtx, this.user); // Fill the result set (throws SQLException). while (userDetails.hasMoreElements()) { Attribute attr = (Attribute)userDetails.next(); results.updateString(attr.getID(), attr.get().toString()); } results.updateInt("authenticated", 1); return true; } catch (FileNotFoundException fnf) { Logger.getAnonymousLogger().log(Level.WARNING, "Caught File Not Found Exception trying to read cris_authentication.properties"); results.updateInt("authenticated", 0); return false; } catch (IOException ioe) { Logger.getAnonymousLogger().log(Level.WARNING, "Caught IO Excpetion processing login"); results.updateInt("authenticated", 0); return false; } catch (AuthenticationException aex) { Logger.getAnonymousLogger().log(Level.WARNING, "Caught Authentication Exception attempting to bind to LDAP for [{0}]", this.user); results.updateInt("authenticated", 0); return true; } catch (NamingException ne) { Logger.getAnonymousLogger().log(Level.WARNING, "Caught Naming Exception performing user search or LDAP bind for [{0}]", this.user); results.updateInt("authenticated", 0); return true; } } public void close() { // nothing needed here } /** * This method is called via a Postgres function binding to access the * functionality provided by this class. */ public static ResultSetProvider processADLogin(String user, String password) { return new ADDetailsProvider(user, password); } } public class ADAuthenticator { public ADAuthenticator() throws FileNotFoundException, IOException { Properties props = new Properties(); InputStream inStream = this.getClass().getClassLoader(). getResourceAsStream("com/bar/foo/ad/authentication.properties"); props.load(inStream); this.domain = props.getProperty("ldap.domain"); inStream.close(); } public LdapContext authenticate(String domain, String user, String pass) throws AuthenticationException, NamingException, IOException { Hashtable env = new Hashtable(); this.domain = domain; env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory); env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ldap://" + test1.ad1.foo.com + ":" + 3268); env.put(Context.SECURITY_AUTHENTICATION, simple); env.put(Context.REFERRAL, follow); env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, (domain + "\\" + user)); env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, pass); // Bind using specified username and password LdapContext ldapCtx = new InitialLdapContext(env, null); return ldapCtx; } public NamingEnumeration getUserDetails(LdapContext ldapCtx, String user) throws NamingException { // List of attributes to return from LDAP query String returnAttributes[] = {"ou", "sAMAccountName", "givenName", "sn", "memberOf"}; //Create the search controls SearchControls searchCtls = new SearchControls(); searchCtls.setReturningAttributes(returnAttributes); //Specify the search scope searchCtls.setSearchScope(SearchControls.SUBTREE_SCOPE); // Specify the user to search against String searchFilter = "(&(objectClass=*)(sAMAccountName=" + user + "))"; //Perform the search NamingEnumeration answer = ldapCtx.search("dc=dev4,dc=dbt,dc=ukhealth,dc=local", searchFilter, searchCtls); // Only care about the first tuple Attributes userAttributes = ((SearchResult)answer.next()).getAttributes(); if (userAttributes.size() <= 0) throw new NamingException(); return (NamingEnumeration) userAttributes.getAll(); } From what I understand of the trust relationship, if trust1 receives a login attempt for a user in trust2, then it should forward the login attempt on to it and it works this out from the user's domain name. Is this correct or am I missing something or is this not possible using the method above? --EDIT-- The stack trace from the LDAP bind is {java.naming.provider.url=ldap://test1.ad1.foo.com:3268, java.naming.factory.initial=com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory, java.naming.security.authentication=simple, java.naming.referral=follow} 30-Oct-2012 13:16:02 ADDetailsProvider assignRowValues WARNING: Caught Authentication Exception attempting to bind to LDAP for [trusttest] Auth error is [LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903A9, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1db0]

  • RSS Feeds currently on Simple-Talk

    - by Andrew Clarke
There are a number of news-feeds for the Simple-Talk site, but for some reason they are well hidden. Whilst we set about reorganizing them, I thought it would be a good idea to list some of the more important ones. The most important one for almost all purposes is the Homepage RSS feed which represents the blogs and articles that are placed on the homepage. Main Site Feed representing the Homepage ..which is good for most purposes but won't always have all the blogs, or maybe it will occasionally miss an article. If you aren't interested in all the content, you can just use the RSS feeds that are more relevant to your interests. • Running a simple integration scenario using the Oracle Big Data Connectors on Hadoop/HDFS cluster

    - by hamsun
Between the elephant ( the tradional image of the Hadoop framework) and the Oracle Iron Man (Big Data..) an english setter could be seen as the link to the right data Data, Data, Data, we are living in a world where data technology based on popular applications , search engines, Webservers, rich sms messages, email clients, weather forecasts and so on, have a predominant role in our life. More and more technologies are used to analyze/track our behavior, try to detect patterns, to propose us "the best/right user experience" from the Google Ad services, to Telco companies or large consumer sites (like Amazon:) ). The more we use all these technologies, the more we generate data, and thus there is a need of huge data marts and specific hardware/software servers (as the Exadata servers) in order to treat/analyze/understand the trends and offer new services to the users. Some of these "data feeds" are raw, unstructured data, and cannot be processed effectively by normal SQL queries. Large scale distributed processing was an emerging infrastructure need and the solution seemed to be the "collocation of compute nodes with the data", which in turn leaded to MapReduce parallel patterns and the development of the Hadoop framework, which is based on MapReduce and a distributed file system (HDFS) that runs on larger clusters of rather inexpensive servers. Several Oracle products are using the distributed / aggregation pattern for data calculation ( Coherence, NoSql, times ten ) so once that you are familiar with one of these technologies, lets says with coherence aggregators, you will find the whole Hadoop, MapReduce concept very similar. Oracle Big Data Appliance is based on the Cloudera Distribution (CDH), and the Oracle Big Data Connectors can be plugged on a Hadoop cluster running the CDH distribution or equivalent Hadoop clusters. In this paper, a "lab like" implementation of this concept is done on a single Linux X64 server, running an Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.4.0, and a single node Apache hadoop-1.2.1 HDFS cluster, using the SQL connector for HDFS. The whole setup is fairly simple: Install on a Linux x64 server ( or virtual box appliance) an Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.4.0 server Get the Apache Hadoop distribution from: http://mir2.ovh.net/ftp.apache.org/dist/hadoop/common/hadoop-1.2.1. Get the Oracle Big Data Connectors from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/bdc/big-data-connectors/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen. Check the java version of your Linux server with the command: java -version java version "1.7.0_40" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_40-b43) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.0-b56, mixed mode) Decompress the hadoop hadoop-1.2.1.tar.gz file to /u01/hadoop-1.2.1 Modify your .bash_profile export HADOOP_HOME=/u01/hadoop-1.2.1 export PATH=$PATH:$HADOOP_HOME/bin export HIVE_HOME=/u01/hive-0.11.0 export PATH=$PATH:$HADOOP_HOME/bin:$HIVE_HOME/bin (also see my sample .bash_profile) Set up ssh trust for Hadoop process, this is a mandatory step, in our case we have to establish a "local trust" as will are using a single node configuration copy the new public keys to the list of authorized keys connect and test the ssh setup to your localhost: We will run a "pseudo-Hadoop cluster", in what is called "local standalone mode", all the Hadoop java components are running in one Java process, this is enough for our demo purposes. We need to "fine tune" some Hadoop configuration files, we have to go at our $HADOOP_HOME/conf, and modify the files: core-site.xml hdfs-site.xml mapred-site.xml check that the hadoop binaries are referenced correctly from the command line by executing: hadoop -version As Hadoop is managing our "clustered HDFS" file system we have to create "the mount point" and format it , the mount point will be declared to core-site.xml as: The layout under the /u01/hadoop-1.2.1/data will be created and used by other hadoop components (MapReduce = /mapred/...) HDFS is using the /dfs/... layout structure format the HDFS hadoop file system: Start the java components for the HDFS system As an additional check, you can use the GUI Hadoop browsers to check the content of your HDFS configurations: Once our HDFS Hadoop setup is done you can use the HDFS file system to store data ( big data : )), and plug them back and forth to Oracle Databases by the means of the Big Data Connectors ( which is the next configuration step). You can create / use a Hive db, but in our case we will make a simple integration of "raw data" , through the creation of an External Table to a local Oracle instance ( on the same Linux box, we run the Hadoop HDFS one node cluster and one Oracle DB). Download some public "big data", I use the site: http://france.meteofrance.com/france/observations, from where I can get *.csv files for my big data simulations :). Here is the data layout of my example file: Download the Big Data Connector from the OTN (oraosch-2.2.0.zip), unzip it to your local file system (see picture below) Modify your environment in order to access the connector libraries , and make the following test: [oracle@dg1 bin]$./hdfs_stream Usage: hdfs_stream locationFile [oracle@dg1 bin]$ Load the data to the Hadoop hdfs file system: hadoop fs -mkdir bgtest_data hadoop fs -put obsFrance.txt bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt hadoop fs -ls /user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt [oracle@dg1 bg-data-raw]$ hadoop fs -ls /user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt Found 1 items -rw-r--r-- 1 oracle supergroup 54103 2013-10-22 06:10 /user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt [oracle@dg1 bg-data-raw]$hadoop fs -ls hdfs:///user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt Found 1 items -rw-r--r-- 1 oracle supergroup 54103 2013-10-22 06:10 /user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt Check the content of the HDFS with the browser UI: Start the Oracle database, and run the following script in order to create the Oracle database user, the Oracle directories for the Oracle Big Data Connector (dg1 it’s my own db id replace accordingly yours): #!/bin/bash export ORAENV_ASK=NO export ORACLE_SID=dg1 . oraenv sqlplus /nolog <<EOF CONNECT / AS sysdba; CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY osch_bin_path AS '/u01/orahdfs-2.2.0/bin'; CREATE USER BGUSER IDENTIFIED BY oracle; GRANT CREATE SESSION, CREATE TABLE TO BGUSER; GRANT EXECUTE ON sys.utl_file TO BGUSER; GRANT READ, EXECUTE ON DIRECTORY osch_bin_path TO BGUSER; CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY BGT_LOG_DIR as '/u01/BG_TEST/logs'; GRANT READ, WRITE ON DIRECTORY BGT_LOG_DIR to BGUSER; CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY BGT_DATA_DIR as '/u01/BG_TEST/data'; GRANT READ, WRITE ON DIRECTORY BGT_DATA_DIR to BGUSER; EOF Put the following in a file named t3.sh and make it executable, hadoop jar $OSCH_HOME/jlib/orahdfs.jar \ oracle.hadoop.exttab.ExternalTable \ -D oracle.hadoop.exttab.tableName=BGTEST_DP_XTAB \ -D oracle.hadoop.exttab.defaultDirectory=BGT_DATA_DIR \ -D oracle.hadoop.exttab.dataPaths="hdfs:///user/oracle/bgtest_data/obsFrance.txt" \ -D oracle.hadoop.exttab.columnCount=7 \ -D oracle.hadoop.connection.url=jdbc:oracle:thin:@//localhost:1521/dg1 \ -D oracle.hadoop.connection.user=BGUSER \ -D oracle.hadoop.exttab.printStackTrace=true \ -createTable --noexecute then test the creation fo the external table with it: [oracle@dg1 samples]$ ./t3.sh ./t3.sh: line 2: /u01/orahdfs-2.2.0: Is a directory Oracle SQL Connector for HDFS Release 2.2.0 - Production Copyright (c) 2011, 2013, Oracle and/or its affiliates. • ASP.NET MVC: Simple view to display contents of DataTable

    - by DigiMortal
In one of my current projects I have to show reports based on SQL Server views. My code should be not aware of data it shows. It just asks data from view and displays it user. As WebGrid didn’t seem to work with DataTable (at least with no hocus-pocus) I wrote my own very simple view that shows contents of DataTable. I don’t focus right now on data querying questions as this part of my simple generic reporting stuff is still under construction. If the final result is something good enough to share with wider audience I will blog about it for sure. My view uses DataTable as model. It iterates through columns collection to get column names and then iterates through rows and writes out values of all columns. Nothing special, just simple generic view for DataTable. @model System.Data.DataTable @using System.Data; <h2>Report</h2> <table>     <thead>     <tr>     @foreach (DataColumn col in Model.Columns)         {                  <th>@col.ColumnName</th>     }         </tr>     </thead>             <tbody>     @foreach (DataRow row in Model.Rows)         {                 <tr>         @foreach (DataColumn col in Model.Columns)                 {                          <td>@row[col.ColumnName]</td>         }                 </tr>     }         </tbody> </table> In my controller action I have code like this. GetParams() is simple function that reads parameter values from form. This part of my simple reporting system is still under construction but as you can see it will be easy to use for UI developers. public ActionResult TasksByProjectReport() {      var data = _reportService.GetReportData("MEMOS",GetParams());      return View(data); } Before seeing next silver bullet in this example please calm down. It is just plain and simple stuff for simple needs. If you need advanced and powerful reporting system then better use existing components by some vendor.

  • Separation of development responsibilities in a new project

    - by dreza
We have very recently started a new project (MVC 3.0) and some of our early discussion has been around how the work and development will be split amongst the team members to ensure we get the least amount of overlap of work and so help make it a bit easier for each developer to get on and do their work. The project is expected to take about 6 months - 1 year (although not all developers are likely to be on and might filter off towards the end), Our team is going to be small so this will help out a bit I believe. The team will essentially consist of: 3 x developers (All different levels i.e. more senior, intermediate and junior) 1 x project manager / product owner / tester An external company responsbile for doing our design work General project/development decisions so far have included: Develop in an Agile way using SCRUM techniques (We are still very much learning this approach as a company) Use MVVM archectecture Use Ninject and DI where possible Attempt to use as TDD as much as possible to drive development. Keep our controllers as skinny as possible Keep our views as simple as possible During our discussions two approaches have been broached as too how to seperate the workload given our objectives outlined above. OPTION 1: A framework seperation where each person is responsible for conceptual areas with overlap and discussion primarily in the integration areas. The integration areas would the responsibily of both developers as required. View prototypes (**Graphic designer**) | - Mockups | Views (Razor and view helpers etc) & Javascript (**Developer 1**) | - View models (Integration point) | Controllers and Application logic (**Developer 2**) | - Models (Integration point) | Domain model and persistence (**Developer 3**) OPTION 2: A more task orientated approach where each person is responsible for the completion of the entire task (story) from view - controller - model. QUESTION: For those who have worked in small teams developing MVC projects how have you managed the workload distribution in this situation. I can't imagine the junior would be responsible for building parts of the underlying architecture so would given them responsibility for the view make sense considering we are trying to keep it simple?

  • Web Hosting Advice for Project [duplicate]

    - by Lea Hayes
Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am working on a project that will be released as open source in the latter part of the year. I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting. I found the following companies which seem to offer around this price range, but they have very mixed reviews. http://www.webhosting.uk.com/ http://www.eukhost.com/ Godaddy UK uk2 . net My company is based in the UK, how important is it for me to use UK based hosting? There are plenty of overseas hosting companies that are considerably cheaper. When it comes to bandwidth, how many downloads will bandwidth: 100GB get me? Any advice would be very greatly appreciated!

  • The Middle of Every Project

    - by andrew.sparks
I read a quote somewhere “The middle of every successful project looks like a mess.” or something to that effect. I suppose the projects where the beginning, middle and end are a mess are the ones you need to watch out for. Right now we are in ramp up of the maintenance/support teams at a big project in the Nordics. We are facing a year of mixed mode operations, where we have production operations and the phased rollout to new locations in parallel. The support team supports, and the deployment team deploys. As usual the assumption right up to about a month or so before initial go-live was that the deployment team would carry the support. Not! Consequently we had a last minute scramble over the Christmas/New Year to fire up a support/maintenance team. While it is a bit messy and not perfect – the quality of the mess (I mean scramble) is not so bad. Weekly operational review with the operational delivery managers, written issue lists and assigned actions, candid discussions getting the problems on the table and documented, issues getting solved and moved off the table. So while the middle of a project might look like a mess (even the start) it is methodical use of project management tools of checklists and scheduled communication points that are helping us navigate out of the mess and bring it all under control.

  • JavaOne 2012 Sunday Strategy Keynote

    - by Janice J. Heiss
At the Sunday Strategy Keynote, held at the Masonic Auditorium, Hasan Rizvi, EVP, Middleware and Java Development, stated that the theme for this year's JavaOne is: “Make the future Java”-- meaning that Java continues in its role as the most popular, complete, productive, secure, and innovative development platform. But it also means, he qualified, the process by which we make the future Java -- an open, transparent, collaborative, and community-driven evolution. "Many of you have bet your businesses and your careers on Java, and we have bet our business on Java," he said.Rizvi detailed the three factors they consider critical to the success of Java--technology innovation, community participation, and Oracle's leadership/stewardship. He offered a scorecard in these three realms over the past year--with OS X and Linux ARM support on Java SE, open sourcing of JavaFX by the end of the year, the release of Java Embedded Suite 7.0 middleware platform, and multiple releases on the Java EE side. The JCP process continues, with new JSR activity, and JUGs show a 25% increase in participation since last year. Oracle, meanwhile, continues its commitment to both technology and community development/outreach--with four regional JavaOne conferences last year in various part of the world, as well as the release of Java Magazine, with over 120,000 current subscribers. Georges Saab, VP Development, Java SE, next reviewed features of Java SE 7--the first major revision to the platform under Oracle's stewardship, which has included near-monthly update releases offering hundreds of fixes, performance enhancements, and new features. Saab indicated that developers, ISVs, and hosting providers have all been rapid adopters of the platform. He also noted that Oracle's entire Fusion middleware stack is supported on SE 7. The supported platforms for SE 7 has also increased--from Windows, Linux, and Solaris, to OS X, Linux ARM, and the emerging ARM micro-server market. "In the last year, we've added as many new platforms for Java, as were added in the previous decade," said Saab.Saab also explored the upcoming JDK 8 release--including Project Lambda, Project Nashorn (a modern implementation of JavaScript running on the JVM), and others. He noted that Nashorn functionality had already been used internally in NetBeans 7.3, and announced that they were planning to contribute the implementation to OpenJDK. Nandini Ramani, VP Development, Java Client, ME and Card, discussed the latest news pertaining to JavaFX 2.0--releases on Windows, OS X, and Linux, release of the FX Scene Builder tool, the JavaFX WebView component in NetBeans 7.3, and an OpenJFX project in OpenJDK. Nandini announced, as of Sunday, the availability for download of JavaFX on Linux ARM (developer preview), as well as Scene Builder on Linux. She noted that for next year's JDK 8 release, JavaFX will offer 3D, as well as third-party component integration. Avinder Brar, Senior Software Engineer, Navis, and Dierk König, Canoo Fellow, next took the stage and demonstrated all that JavaFX offers, with a feature-rich, animation-rich, real-time cargo management application that employs Canoo's just open-sourced Dolphin technology.Saab also explored Java SE 9 and beyond--Jigsaw modularity, Penrose Project for interoperability with OSGi, improved multi-tenancy for Java in the cloud, and Project Sumatra. Phil Rogers, HSA Foundation President and AMD Corporate Fellow, explored heterogeneous computing platforms that combine the CPU and the parallel processor of the GPU into a single piece of silicon and shared memory—a hardware technology driven by such advanced functionalities as HD video, face recognition, and cloud workloads. Project Sumatra is an OpenJDK project targeted at bringing Java to such heterogeneous platforms--with hardware and software experts working together to modify the JVM for these advanced applications and platforms.Ramani next discussed the latest with Java in the embedded space--"the Internet of things" and M2M--declaring this to be "the next IT revolution," with Java as the ideal technology for the ecosystem. Last week, Oracle released Java ME Embedded 3.2 (for micro-contollers and low-power devices), and Java Embedded Suite 7.0 (a middleware stack based on Java SE 7). Axel Hansmann, VP Strategy and Marketing, Cinterion, explored his company's use of Java in M2M, and their new release of EHS5, the world's smallest 3G-capable M2M module, running Java ME Embedded. Hansmaan explained that Java offers them the ability to create a "simple to use, scalable, coherent, end-to-end layer" for such diverse edge devices.Marc Brule, Chief Financial Office, Royal Canadian Mint, also explored the fascinating use-case of JavaCard in his country's MintChip e-cash technology--deployable on smartphones, USB device, computer, tablet, or cloud. In parting, Ramani encouraged developers to download the latest releases of Java Embedded, and try them out.Cameron Purdy, VP, Fusion Middleware Development and Java EE, summarized the latest developments and announcements in the Enterprise space--greater developer productivity in Java EE6 (with more on the way in EE 7), portability between platforms, vendors, and even cloud-to-cloud portability. The earliest version of the Java EE 7 SDK is now available for download--in GlassFish 4--with WebSocket support, better JSON support, and more. The final release is scheduled for April of 2013. Nicole Otto, Senior Director, Consumer Digital Technology, Nike, explored her company's Java technology driven enterprise ecosystem for all things sports, including the NikeFuel accelerometer wrist band. Looking beyond Java EE 7, Purdy mentioned NoSQL database functionality for EE 8, the concurrency utilities (possibly in EE 7), some of the Avatar projects in EE 7, some in EE 8, multi-tenancy for the cloud, supporting SaaS applications, and more.Rizvi ended by introducing Dr. Robert Ballard, oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer in Residence--part of Oracle's philanthropic relationship with the National Geographic Society to fund K-12 education around ocean science and conservation. Ballard is best known for having discovered the wreckage of the Titanic. He offered a fascinating video and overview of the cutting edge technology used in such deep-sea explorations, noting that in his early days, high-bandwidth exploration meant that you’d go down in a submarine and "stick your face up against the window." Now, it's a remotely operated, technology telepresence--"I think of my Hercules vehicle as my equivalent of a Na'vi. When I go beneath the sea, I actually send my spirit." Using high bandwidth satellite links, such amazing explorations can now occur via smartphone, laptop, or whatever platform. Ballard’s team regularly offers live feeds and programming out to schools and the world, spanning 188 countries--with embedding educators as part of the expeditions. It's technology at its finest, inspiring the next-generation of scientists and explorers!

  • Should Git be used for documentation and project management? Should the code be in a separate repository?

    - by EmpireJones
I'm starting up a Git repository for a group project. Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should. Thanks for the feedback so far!

  • Wide gap in my resume as a Java developer. What are must-have skills required to get hired those days? [closed]

    - by OnlineAlien
For some legal reasons I haven't worked for anybody for the last 12 years. I am a java web developer or at least I am thinking so. For this period I have been working on my project- some sort of business network - and I did few small jobs, so right now I feel I am far behind in terms of my skills and the skills needed today. I lingered too long on Struts and Hibernate and thought that could the job for my project. I need to get a job, right now, so I am spending most of my time brushing my skills. My question is: What are the current necessary skills that could convince employers to hire me regardless of my past employment or the lack of it. Right now I am on AspectJ, IoC and Spring Thanks

  • Should I redo an abandoned project with Lightswitch?

    - by Elson
I had a small project that I was doing on the side. It was basically a couple of forms linked to a DB. Access was out, because it was a specifically meant to be a web application. Being a small project I used ASP.NET Dynamic Data, but, for various reasons, the project ended before deployment. I met the client recently, and he said there was a need for it still. I'm considering restarting the project with Dynamic Data, but I've seen some Lightswitch demos, and was suitably impressed with the BETA. I will wait for RTM if I use it, but is it a good idea to use Lightswitch to replace the Dyanmic Data? The amount of work I put into the Dynamic Data site isn't really an issue. Additional information: It's a system that tracks production in a small factory, broken down by line, machine, section and will generate reports. I would guess that the data structure will remain fairly constant over time, but that the reporting requirements will grow. The other thing is that the factory is part of a larger group, and I'm hopeful that, if this system succeeds, similar work with be forthcoming for other factories.
