  • Are swapped in hot-swap drives allocated the same Windows drive letter each time?

    We are intending on purchasing a dedicated machine to perform the company's backups. We were considering buying the Dell T310, with the theory that we could swap the drives in and out for offsite backup. (As in, take out a drive, put a version a couple of days' old in its place, the old backup is updated to the current version.) One thing that may stymie this, though, is the system changing drive letters as things get moved in and out. Does anyone know whether this happens?

  • How can I take a one time full backup of a Windows Server without the need for a restore program?

    I have a Windows SBS server with about 500GB of data that I'm decommissioning but I'd like to take a final backup of the server and place it on an external USB drive. I already have multiple backups of the server on disk from the past but they are through Simpana Commvault. I'd like a backup that will simply copy the file structure, ACLs, timestamps, etc. as is to a NTFS volume on the external drive. This way if someone says "I need x file on the server you decommed" I can search the external drive real quick instead of firing up Commvault, cataloging, restore, etc. I know the built-in Windows backup is great, I just don't feel like running it for a restore job on this. I'd like an option where in the future it won't require a program to run a restore. Rather a simple mount of the drive will suffice. I believe I can use robocopy just fine, but I'm not sure if it will grab the Windows directory, system files, and full user profiles correctly even with the /ZB option. Options? Is Robocopy /E /ZB /COPYALL /DCOPY:DAT /MT:32 /R:5 /W:5 /LOG:copylog.log the way to go here?

  • Rails: Easy way to add more than one flash[:notice] at a time.

    I thought every time you do a flash[:notice]="Message" it would add it to the array which would then get displayed during the view but the following just keeps the last flash: flash[:notice] = "Message 1" flash[:notice] = "Message 2" Now I realize it's just a simple hash with a key (I think :)) but is there a better way to do multiple flashes than the following: flash[:notice] = "Message 1<br />" flash[:notice] = "Message 2" Thanks.   • Windows only successfully wakes up from sleep mode about 2/3rds of the time.

    On my Vista laptop, when it goes into sleep mode (for low power, or manually being put into sleep mode, it happens regardless of how), about 1 in 3 times it won't wake up properly from sleep mode, and just display a black screen. The only option is to hold the power button to turn it off by holding the power button, and turning it back on again. (And yes, I have moved the mouse, pressed keyboard buttons and stuff).

  • Can I do a "one-time" file content search in Windows Server 2008 without adding the folder to the index?

    Can I search for files which contain a specific string in a folder if that folder is not in the search index? So, lets say folder 'textFiles' is not in the index. I navigate to this folder in windows explorer. I type '.ini' in the search box I want to see a result list containing only 'b.txt' FOLDER C:\textFiles\ FILE a.php CONTENT once twice thrice mice moose monkey FILE b.txt CONTENT mingle muddle middle.ini banana beer FILE c.spo CONTENT sellotape stapler phone book I do not have permission to add folders to the windows index and I do not have permission to install or run any executables that did not ship with the server or approved applications. I'd be happy with a windows native command line solution if necessary? Thanks G

  • Is there a good date/time API available for Scala?

    I measured load times for a wordpress 2.9.2 install on apache 2.2.3 and I was intrigued by the long periods between connect and first byte for the css and image files. Load Average is 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 and there are 150MB free RAM on the VPS.     I am in the process of migrating 2 DB servers (Master & Slave) to two new DB Servers (Master and Slave) DB1 - Master (production) DB2 - Slave (production) DB3 - New Master DB4 - New Slave Currently I have the replication set up as: DB1 -> DB2 DB3 -> DB4 To get the production data replicated to the new servers, I'd like to get it "daisy chained" so that it looks like this: DB1 -> DB2 -> DB3 -> DB4 Is this possible? When I run show master status; on DB2 (the production slave) the binlog possition never seems to change: +------------------+----------+--------------+------------------+ | File | Position | Binlog_Do_DB | Binlog_Ignore_DB | +------------------+----------+--------------+------------------+ | mysql-bin.000020 | 98 | | | +------------------+----------+--------------+------------------+ I'm a bit confused as to why the binlog position is not changing on DB2, Ideally it will be the master to DB3.

This library is installed by default in /opt and requires you to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH both for compiling and for running your software (if you choose the shared library linking, which I did). I already modified my configure.ac/Makefile.am so that I do not need to set that variable when compiling, but I still can't find the shared library at run-time; how do I do that? I'm compiling with the -Wl, -R/path/to/lib flag using g++

  • Why does my Belkin Play router regularly stop working for a few minutes at a time?

    I recently purchased a Belking Play dual-band router for my home. About every few hours, the router stops working or "cuts out" for several minutes before coming back online automatically. My old one did this as well. I figured out a main problem was my wireless home phone, which sends a 2.4GHz signal. Anytime someone would call the phone, my router would get interrupted. Therefore, I unplugged this phone and got a wired phone. Unfortunately, my wired phone has the same problem. Therefore, I unplugged the wired phone. Unfortunately, my router still has regular issues. I live in a home with neighbors within close proximity to me, so it might be possible that their devices are the ones causing me problems. How can I determine what is causing my router problems? I thought that the point of a dual-band router was that if a signal was interfering on one band then it would be uninterrupted on another. However, it seems that is not the case. Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this or any knowledge you can share to properly set my expectations?

    I open these applications in my desktop computer: Visual Studio 2010 Professional IBM Lotus Notes Google Chrome And when it is idle for an hour and I restore the windows, the user interface responds very slowly. My computer auto-lock itself after being idle for 5 minutes. I also minimize the applications using a docklet (RocketDock). Why is it slowing down and how can I prevent it from slowing? My OS is Windows XP Professional SP3, Pentum(R) Dual Core @ 2.80 GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM.

  • How can I prevent Ask.com Toolbar from being installed every time Java is updated?

    As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?
