  • Unable to Install ubuntu onto a blank hard drive

    - by user287561
I just built a pc and I am trying to install Ubuntu 14 onto it. I did the process in which you format the flash drive to be able to have Ubuntu 14 and install directly in BIOS. BIOS is set up to boot from the flash drive. Every time I try to do the install process, it will randomly reboot itself onto the motherboard BIOS menu. This loop constantly occurs and the only way I can use Ubuntu is to put the option of trying but not installing. HELP!

  • Ubuntu One Files for Android will not let me log in

    - by user20867
I installed Ubuntu One Files on my Nexus One phone. When I tap Log in on the main screen, the app tries to log in then after a few seconds returns the following message: Log-in failed, please try again later. I have an Ubuntu One account, and when I tap Register on the main screen for Ubuntu One Files, I can log in using my phone's Web browser. But if I go back to the app and try to log in, I get the same error. Again, my phone is a Nexus One running Android 2.3.4. The phone is not rooted or modded in any way.

  • Can Tutorial "Dual Boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu 12.04" Used for Dual Booting Windows 8 & Ubuntu 12.10?

    - by Shyuan
I previously used this tutorial to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 perfectly. Now I have upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8. And I would like to do a fresh install (and start all over again like the tutorial) of Ubuntu 12.10 replacing existing Ubuntu 12.04. I like the way the tutorial presents thus can anyone kindly let me know if the tutorial is compatible with what I wanna do now? I have tried doing little research whether this has been asked, but all I got are not too similar to my question, if there are topics like this I do apologise and feel free to close it. Hope to hear from the community. Thank you so much. :)

  • Ubuntu 12.04 ATI 6450

    - by user210717
Right now my video card isn't responding after the Ubuntu Logo is shown, (I see a black screen and that's it) I have installed ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 and if I remove the video card and use the VGA from the MOBO then I can use it with no problems, other data: 4 GB of ram 1333 500 GB WD AMD APU A6 3500 2,1 GHZ I forgot a couple of details, everything was working great until last night, when the light went off (I don't know if I'm explaining myself I'm from Argentina and english isn't my first language there was a power cut I meant) and then when it got back I used my pc until I went to bed (after upgrading) and this morning, when I woke up I had this problem for breakfast, I've been reading a little and I had a similar problem before and fixed it, but it was a system problem, a missing package or something, I don't remember, but here the only issue is that the video card doesn't give me image after the ubuntu logo.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 is unstable on my Thinkpad T61

    - by user292386
I have this super old Thinkpad T61 and installed Ubuntu 14.04 on it. I noticed X11 is quite unstable. It'd freeze all the time, especially after suspension. Sometimes dash would appear as a blue screen, etc, etc. I have tried Xunbuntu as well. It's pretty much the same. But I don't seem to have problem with Debian 7.5. I still prefer Ubuntu to Debian. I just wonder which build of Ubuntu would have similar video/X versions as Debian 7.5. Thanks.

  • ubuntu 12.04 cannot login

    - by Kikky Bikky
I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I cannot login. I get to the grub menu and go root, delete my /home/user/.Xauthority file and change my password. I move /home/user/.profile to /home/user/profile, reboot, and I can login (this is fixed by moving .profile to some other name). But if I am idle and Ubuntu displays the screensaver, I cannot login. I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and removed /home/user/.Xauthority. I check the existence of /home/user/.profile and it does not exist. There is no way for me to login to X from the keyboard connected to the box. I can ssh -CXY to the ubuntu box and login without any problem. Can someone help me fix this problem?

  • Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 on UEFI laptop

    - by fccoelho
I have a notebook pre-installed with Windows7 and I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it following the standard installation steps in the installation image. The only problem is that on reboot the machine continues to boot Windows ignoring the presence of Ubuntu (Grub never comes up). My partition scheme is this sda1: NTFS 612MB sda2: NTFS 50GB (after resizing during Ubuntu installation. This is the main windows partition) sda4: extended sda5: ext4 /boot sda6: btrfs / I have tried Boot-repair and it didn't help. Tried rEFInd boot manager but it doesn't support NTFS partitions. I don't know what else to try. My next attempt is to try to install GRUB by hand to the MBR. Any other Ideas?

  • echo difference between ubuntu and RedHat

    - by arcomber
I have mostly been experimenting with ubuntu but recently was using a Red Hat Enterprise system and was surprised at a difference I found setting and displaying env variables. In ubuntu I might have an interaction like this: acomber@mail:~$ export MY_VAR=i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo $MY_VAR i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo "$MY_VAR" i686-linux But on RHEL: acomber@mail:~$ export MY_VAR=i686-linux acomber@mail:~$ echo $MY_VAR acomber@mail:~$ echo "$MY_VAR" i686-linux I know this is a ubuntu forum but why the difference? Why do I need to enclose in quotes on RH? There are no spaces in the variable name?

  • How do I install OpenStack on a single Ubuntu 12.04 node?

    - by Sam Edwards
I'm having trouble installing OpenStack in Ubuntu 12.04, for various reasons: The official Ubuntu website recommends Juju and MAAS. However, this is a single node I am trying to get OpenStack installed on, and MAAS requires "two or more nodes" according to the docs. Additionally, I don't have any experience in MAAS and Juju and would rather stick to technologies I am more familiar with so that I can debug problems that arise. I have tried StackGeek but this fails because the node only has a single Ethernet port. The node does, however, have the second hard drive required for the nova storage. I have tried DevStack but cannot log into the dashboard. The login form appears fine, but as soon as I try to submit the page, my browser begins loading indefinitely. I have tried installing straight from packages, but I get an Internal Server Error in the dashboard upon trying to log in, with no helpful logs anywhere in sight to aid me in debugging the issue. Each of these attempts was with a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 LTS setup; I'm finding it really strange that no matter what I try, I cannot get OpenStack installed. Is this even a stable/mature project? Why am I encountering so many bugs?

  • Why is mkfs overwriting the LUKS encryption header on LVM on RAID partitions on Ubuntu 12.04?

    - by Starchy
I'm trying to setup a couple of LUKS-encrypted partitions to be mounted after boot-time on a new Ubuntu server which was installed with LVM on top of software RAID. After running cryptsetup luksFormat, the LUKS header is clearly visible on the volume. After running any flavor of mkfs, the header is overwritten (which does not happen on other systems that were setup without LVM), and cryptsetup will no longer recognize the device as a LUKS device. # cryptsetup -y --cipher aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 --key-size 256 luksFormat /dev/dm-1 WARNING! ======== This will overwrite data on /dev/dm-1 irrevocably. • How do I troubleshoot a segfault in Ubuntu that occurs when typing a bogus command?

    - by Alan
We've got a production server running Ubuntu 11.10. We're encountering segfaults that appear under various conditions. The simplest reproducible case is when we login to an ssh session as our administrative user and enter a bogus command. You'd expect the standard "command not found" error message. Instead, we get a segfault in python. The user's default shell is /bin/bash. For example: $ asdf Segmentation fault Info from /var/log/syslog: Jul 6 15:39:20 PROD001 kernel: [2155960.605695] python[7873]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fffd030b808 error 14 in python2.7[400000+233000] Some details about the server: $ uname -a Linux PROD001 3.0.0-16-server #29-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 14 13:08:12 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ cat /etc/issue Ubuntu 11.10 \n \l Before we ask the IT department to reinstall the O.S., I'd like to understand what got us here. The system and/or this particular user's environment is suspect. Many people have touched this server over the past year, so I'm wondering if it is missing libraries, incorrectly installed packages, etc. I'm hoping that if we can understand what's going wrong in this case, it will help explain why we're getting segfaults in a couple of other scenarios. Any tips on troubleshooting this segfault will be appreciated!

  • Which Ubuntu-like Linux OSs work well on a flash drive?

    - by Evan Kroske
I want a Linux OS that I can load on a flash drive, but I don't want to relearn an entire operating system. I want to know which tiny Linux installations are most like Ubuntu. For example, I'd like to use the apt-get package manager, the Gedit text editor, and the bash shell. I'd like to use something that's already popular, stable, and highly compatible, but it needs to fit comfortably in one gig of my four-gig flash drive (just the essentials; I'll use the remaining three gigs to store installed programs and files). I have no preference for window managers; I just want something small and fast that works like Ubuntu. What is the most popular Ubuntu-like OS that can be easily run on a thumb drive? Edit: I'm not sure I understand how this works. I don't to use a USB drive as a LiveCD; I want to plug in a USB stick and use the computer as if it was my own. In other words, I want to be able to install programs on the drive on one computer and use them on another. Do any of these OSs let me do that? Please forgive my ignorance.

  • Dual-booting Ubuntu and Pardus with GRUB2...Pardus no show?

    - by Ibn Ali al-Turki
Hello all, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and used to dual-boot Fedora, but I replaced Fedora with Pardus. After the install, I went into ubuntu, and did a sudo update-grub. It detected my Pardus 2011 install there. When I rebooted, it did not show up in my grub2 menu however. I went back to Ubuntu and did it again...then checked the grub.cfg, and it is not there. I have read that Pardus uses a grub legacy. How can I get Pardus into my grub2 menu? • Ubuntu Wubi "drive" failure; mount drive in XP?

    - by 618034
Hi there, I installed the Wubi distribution of Ubuntu on a separate partition (which is silly, since why do I care if Windows can still manage the partition?) a few months back; it was pretty awesome, until Linux hosed. At this point, I can get Ubuntu to boot if I try really hard through grub, but once it does start, the screen is hosed, so no dice. At this point, I'd like to wipe it all and start over, but I need to get some stuff off the "disk". The Wubi install makes this difficult, since the "disk" is a flat file on an NTFS partition. I've done just about everything I can think of — I renamed the virtual disk .iso, mounted it with VirtualCloneDrive, then used whatever magic EXT3 (EXT4?) readers I could dig up on the Internet to parse the mount — but nothing's working. Can you offer any suggestions? The "disk" is currently in D:\ubuntu\disks\root.iso. Many thanks! (I may be high-latency at the moment, apologies if I don't address follow-ups quickly)

  • How to get automatic upgrades to work on Ubuntu Server?

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
I followed the documentation for enabling automatic upgrades in Ubuntu servers, but it's not really updating anything at all. My /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades looks almost like the default. // Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin, archive) pairs Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins { "Ubuntu karmic-security"; "Ubuntu karmic-updates"; }; // List of packages to not update Unattended-Upgrade::Package-Blacklist { // "vim"; // "libc6"; // "libc6-dev"; // "libc6-i686"; }; // Send email to this address for problems or packages upgrades // If empty or unset then no email is sent, make sure that you // have a working mail setup on your system. • How to fill in the network line in the ubuntu interfaces config file?

    - by matnagel
I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)

  • How can I control which sound card Ubuntu uses for playback?

    - by GorillaSandwich
I am dual-booting Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP but am new to Ubuntu. In Windows, I use an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card for recording (because it has RCA input jacks for my mixer), but I don't use it for playback (because my speakers use a 1/8 inch jack); instead, I use the motherboard's built-in sound card. I tried to recreate this arrangement in Ubuntu, but despite selecting the built-in card for all playback under System > Preferences > Sound, I still have inconsistent results. Rhythmbox plays back through the integrated card, but Flash content in the browser and games in the OS send their audio to the Audiophile card. I have seen recommendations to use a program called "Jack" to control this, but I installed it and found it baffling. How can I control which card is used for playback, other than disabling one card (as I discovered how to do and explain below)? Also, is there a GUI for disabling hardware, or is it necessary to edit a configuration file?

  • Configuring PAM with pam_mount; getting a dlopen() with an HX_Init error

    - by Jamie
I'm trying to get automounting upon login working on Ubuntu 10.03 Beta 2. I didn't find a package for pam_mount, so I ended downloading it and building it. This required: sudo apt-get install build-essential pkg-config libxml2-dev libssl-dev libpam-dev Additionally, the libHX-dev is required but as of yesterday (23/4/2010) the package version provided (3.2) wasn't up to snuff (3.4) so I downloaded, compiled and installed that too. cd ./pam_mount-1.36/ && ./configure && make && sudo make install When I tried it (pam_mount) I got this in my auth log: Apr 23 12:18:02 ubuntu sshd[1195]: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/pam_mount.so): /lib/security/pam_mount.so: undefined symbol: HX_init Apr 23 12:18:02 ubuntu sshd[1195]: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_mount.so Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=192.168.20.182 user=jrisk Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): getting password (0x00000388) Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): pam_get_item returned a password Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: pam_winbind(sshd:auth): user 'jrisk' granted access Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: Accepted password for jrisk from 192.168.20.182 port 4369 ssh2 Apr 23 12:18:06 ubuntu sshd[1195]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user jrisk by (uid=0) What do I need to do get HX_Init into the system? • Windows user moving to Ubuntu 12.04. Where are the system tools, or equivalents?

    - by Big Endian
I am a Windows user who has begun experimenting with Ubuntu. Ubuntu seems great, but for all the things it seems like I CAN'T do. How do I get to advanced administration stuff, like the list of drivers, all of the installed software, and something equivalent to Windows' Device Manager. I always heard that Linux was supposed to be very raw, and you had to have lots of computer experience to make it work. This seems just the opposite. Ubuntu seems very modern and user friendly, better in some regards than any operating system I have seen. Unfortunately, I can't find any of the guts of this system beneath all of the user friendly frosting... gunk... crap... stuff. I'm reminded more and more of an Apple computer (except Linux is more affordable :). So how do I peel back this layer and start using the computer? A solution other than installing Gnome 3 would be appreciated.

  • How do you install a USB CD Rom drive?

    - by Matt Allen
Hello, I recently purchased a USB CD ROM drive, but I don't know how to get it to work with my computer which runs Ubuntu 10.04. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303H908/ref=oss_product When I issue the lsusb command, it shows up as: Bus 002 Device 016: ID 05e3:0701 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB 2.0 IDE Adapter The computer doesn't recognize it automatically. How can I get this drive to show up as an actual drive on my computer?
