• *nix OS that is easy to update to latest software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the past I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this outdated difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesnt start with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. • Silverlight 3 data-binding child property doesn't update

  I have a Silverlight control that has my root ViewModel object as it's data source. The ViewModel exposes a list of Cards as well as a SelectedCard property which is bound to a drop-down list at the top of the view. I then have a form of sorts at the bottom that displays the properties of the SelectedCard. My XAML appears as (reduced for simplicity): <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <ComboBox DisplayMemberPath="Name" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Cards}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=SelectedCard, Mode=TwoWay}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=SelectedCard.Name}" /> <ListBox DisplayMemberPath="Name" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=SelectedCard.PendingTransactions}" /> </StackPanel> I would expect the TextBlock and ListBox to update whenever I select a new item in the ComboBox, but this is not the case. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that the TextBlock and ListBox are actually bound to properties of the SelectedCard so it is listening for property change notifications for the properties on that object. But, I would have thought that data-binding would be smart enough to recognize that the parent object in the binding expression had changed and update the entire binding. It bears noting that the PendingTransactions property (bound to the ListBox) is lazy-loaded. So, the first time I select an item in the ComboBox, I do make the async call and load the list and the UI updates to display the information corresponding to the selected item. However, when I reselect an item, the UI doesn't change! For example, if my original list contains three cards, I select the first card by default. Data-binding does attempt to access the PendingTransactions property on that Card object and updates the ListBox correctly. If I select the second card in the list, the same thing happens and I get the list of PendingTransactions for that card displayed. But, if I select the first card again, nothing changes in my UI! Setting a breakpoint, I am able to confirm that the SelectedCard property is being updated correctly. How can I make this work???

• Exchange Server Contact Categories - How to Remove/Update All

  I've been tasked with cleaning up our companies contact database sitting on our Exchange Server 2003. The rub is this database of contacts has been neglected for the past couple of years and is now a bit messy. My issue is I have say a person named 'Bob Smith', and Bob is listed in multiple categories, 'Students' and 'Student'. I would really like to remove the 'Student' category from Bob and anyone else out there that has the same category. My question is, is there an easy way to edit the master category lists for contacts on the exchange server? I feel like I am missing something simple here since if I were playing with the categories that I use, to say organize email its very easy to do so, but I can't seem to find the proper way to do it for categories that are up on the server. I'm attempting to work through Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003. Any insight would be very helpful as I really don't want to change 8000+ contacts by hand.

  Hello, I have a list of dicts and I want to compare each dict in that list with a dict in a resulting list, add it to the result list if it's not there, and if it's there, update a counter associated with that dict. At first I wanted to use the solution described at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1692388/python-list-of-dict-if-exists-increment-a-dict-value-if-not-append-a-new-dict but I got an error where one dict can not be used as a key to another dict. • (manually configured) kernel update leaves wireless in a mess

  I recently upgraded my kernel from 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 to 2.6.32-gentoo-r7. In both cases, I configured everything manually. However, since the upgrade, my wireless card appears to be on the fritz. It will connect to networks just fine, and remain connected, but can only access the internet (and other hosts on the network) for about 3 seconds after connecting. Reconnecting to the network appears to fix the problem... for another 3 seconds or so. The problem is "solved" by booting into the older kernel. The relevant lspci entry is 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection I'm pretty sure I have the correct drivers enabled in the kernel Device Drivers ---> Network device support ---> Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11) ---> <*> Intel Wireless Wifi [*] Enable LED support in iwlagn and iwl3945 drivers [*] Enable Spectrum Measurement in iwlagn driver [*] Enable full debugging output in iwlagn and iwl3945 drivers <*> Intel Wireless WiFi Next Gen AGN (iwlagn) [*] Intel Wireless WiFi 4965AGN [*] Intel Wireless WiFi 5000AGN; Intel WiFi Link 1000, 6000, and 6050 Series I tried with the other intel drivers enabled as well (iwl3945) and no difference. I got everything back in place except a right problems. if i us "mkdir" with php i get : permission denied. whoami return : "www-data" File owner are like before (for example web54:client4), same for directory Ftp user work fine, create new file and edit file with the same right (web54:client4) I don't understand why it does'nt work in php and I don't have any idea where to look now ? • Microsoft Access: computer freezes when user tries to update record

  A colleague and I have developed an Access 2003 database which is used throughout our department. Currently about four dozen people do data entry using one of two very similar forms. If 47 of us use them, they work perfectly. If Mr. 48 clicks the "Save" button, Windows XP freezes and a hard reset is needed. The problem has to be on his specific computer (Dell latitude D630) and not in the code because this problem only affects him. Complicating the matter: I don't work for IS, and this project is not supported by IS. If I'm going to get our tech support to fix the problem I had better be able to explain exactly what to do and how to do it, because they aren't going to invest any resources. I don't even have admin rights on the computer (and neither does its regular user). I've asked him to bring his laptop the next time he visits my building. (Just to make matters worse, he doesn't usually work in the same location as me or the other developer.) Any suggestions on debugging the problem? My first try will be to uninstall and reinstall Office, which I can do using corporate utilities without being admin. Note: yes, those are old versions of Office and Windows. We expect to upgrade later this year.

• What is the preferred way to update database schemas in multiple production environments

  I am about to install some 20 servers with the same web application in multiple locations connected to their own local database. I will be updating the web applications remotely (perhaps using debian's package manager) and I'm sure will eventually need to update the database schemas. Since each server could be eventually be using a different release of the web application, I need a way to apply the incremental changes to the servers. I'm thinking something like this. Let's start with database.schema.1 as the original release of the database and assume this number increases with each new version of the schema. I eventually could end up with database.schema.17 as the current release. For a new installation this would be the schema to install. It seems to me that I would need consecutive translations like database.translation.1.2 which would convert database.schema.1 into database.schema.2, database.translation.2.3 to convert from 2 to 3 and so on until 17. It seems that whenever I change a schema I need to alter the database but perhaps I need to run some script to update the data which might be done with SQL but might require an external non sql script. What is the appropriate way to organize all these files? What is the automatic way to apply those upgrades to the schema? Where do I store the current version number of the schema?

  So i have made this website on which you can trade stocks based on real stock quotes with virtual money. The stock quotes are in a MySQL database and are updated using a python script which runs every minute or so. Now, this works fine on my local machine with xampp but how about moving the project to a commercial web server? Basically I want my page hosted by a professional company but do those kind of servers support python scripts running in the background? Because a dedicated server would be to expensive and the script does some other sql tasks too so it can't be replaced by PHP or so... So, are there any good web hosting services out there who give me the possibility of running a script in the background and hosting a website in the foreground? For what server specifications do i have to look for? Thnx in advance! PS: I've done some research, and I found a python supporting web host WITH ssh support. Is that what I need? Or is the ssh not allowed to start processes?

I managed to update the database settings in properties file programmatically. • How Do I Configure ProFTP for Website Update?

  I am running Ubuntu Server 9.10 with ProFTPD, and I also have Webmin. I have DNS setup for 3 domains, mail setup for 3 domains, as well as Apache2 setup for those domains. They work great. Now I want to give FTP access for an incoming user, but point them to /var/www/[domain] and have them come in as something like user "ftpuser" but want this to translate to user "www-data" so that web permissions will be correct. What is the technique to do this?

If there is a row with the primary key, I want to update it the latest values and If there is no row with that primary key, I need to insert into the table. • Binding update on adds news series to WPF Toolkit chart (instead of replacing/updating series)

  I'm currently recoding a bar chart in my app to make use of the Chart class in the WPF Toolkit. Using MVVM, I'm binding the ItemsSource of a ColumnSeries in my chart to a property on my viewmodel. Here's the relevant XAML: <charting:Chart> <charting:ColumnSeries ItemsSource="{Binding ScoreDistribution.ClassScores}" IndependentValuePath="ClassName" DependentValuePath="Score"/> </charting:Chart> And the property on the viewmodel: // NB: viewmodel derived from Josh Smith's BindableObject public class ExamResultsViewModel : BindableObject { // ... private ScoreDistributionByClass _scoreDistribution; public ScoreDistributionByClass ScoreDistribution { get { return _scoreDistribution; } set { if (_scoreDistribution == value) { return; } _scoreDistribution = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => ScoreDistribution); } } However, when I update the ScoreDistribution property (by setting it to a new ScoreDistribution object), the chart gets an additional series (based on the new ScoreDistribution) as well as keeping the original series (based on the previous ScoreDistribution). To illustrate this, here are a couple of screenshots showing the chart before an update (with a single data point in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores) and after it (now with 3 data points in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores): Now, I realise there are other ways I could be doing this (e.g. changing the contents of the original ScoreDistribution object rather than replacing it entirely), but I don't understand why it's going wrong in its current form. Can anyone help?

• Active Directory - Using GPO To Update Multiple Versions Of .NET

  OK, I have searched everywhere for this one. I have all the MSI's and packages I need to deploy .Net 3.5 SP1, and 2.0 and 3.0 (which are prerequisites for 3.5). I can't figure out how to install all of them at once via GPO. Basically, the computers on the network do NOT have any version of .Net installed, and I need them to be at 3.5 SP1. I know I can deploy each version via GPO, force reboot the client, then push the next one, force reboot, and so on. Is there a way to streamline install all 3 at once via GPO? Thanks
