• Fixing SharePoint 2010 Permission Problems on Windows 7

  I had a tough time trying to have SharePoint working perfectly on a Windows 7 development machine that was occasionally disconnected from the Active Directory (when I am home I must connect through a VPN). I mostly had problems with service applications such as User Profile, Managed Metadata, Business Connectivity Services and the like, and all I knew were cryptical messages such as “access denied” or “the service or application pool is not started”. I was sure that both the services and application pools were running under a domain account that had proper permissions on the SQL Server instance, and basically it was a fresh installation. Lots of people are having the same problem, apparently. After banging my head against the wall for several days, I remembered about farm (what I had) versus stand-alone (which I had never tried) installations. Bingo! Here’s what I did: I dropped all SharePoint databases and logins and reinstalled SP from scratch, only this time not in farm mode, but as stand-alone. After the SharePoint Configuration Wizard started, I cancelled it and started the Management Shell. I created the configuration database manually by using the New-SPConfigurationDatabase cmdlet where I specified a local account – something that the Configuration Wizard wouldn’t allow me to do. Then I restarted the Configuration Wizard and everything began working perfectly! Yes, I got some pre-configured service applications and also some content which I didn’t need, but I realized it was possible to drop and recreate everything the way I wanted to. All services and application pools are now running under local accounts, which is fine for my development needs. Really, Microsoft… I hope this will bring light to someone facing the same problems!

It has been a while since we last heard of this fancy little thing called Mission Control. It came all the way from JRockit and was renamed to Java Mission Control. This is one of the parts which literally survived the convergence strategy between HotSpot and JRockit. With today's Java SE 7 Update 40 you can actually use it again. Java Mission Control 5.2 The former JRockit Mission Control (JRMC) is now called Java Mission Control (JMC) and is a tools suite which includes tools to monitor, manage, profile, and eliminate memory leaks in your Java application without introducing the performance overhead normally associated with tools of this type. Up to today the 5.1 version was available within the Oracle HotSpot downloads which could only be received by paying customers from the Oracle Support Website. Todays release is the first release of Java Mission Control that is bundled with the Hotspot JDK! The convergence project between JRockit and Hotspot has reached critical mass. • SQLRally Nordic gets underway

  PASS is becoming more international, which is great. The SQL Community has always been international – it’s not as if data is only generated in North America. And while it’s easy for organisations to have a North American focus, PASS is taking steps to become international. Regular readers will be aware that I’m one of three advisors to the PASS Board of Directors, with a focus on developing PASS as a more global organisation. With this in mind, it’s great that today is Day 1 of SQLRally Nordic, being hosted in in Sweden – not only a non-American country, but one that doesn’t have English as its major language. The event has been hosted by the amazing Johan Åhlén and Raoul Illyés, two guys who I met earlier this year, but the thing that amazes me is the incredible support that this event has from the SQL Community. It’s been sold out for a long time, and when you see the list of speakers, it’s not surprising. Some of the industry’s biggest names from Microsoft have turned up, including Mark Souza (who is also a PASS Director), Thomas Kejser and Tobias Thernström. Business Intelligence experts such as Jen Stirrup, Chris Webb, Peter Myers, Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are there, as are some of the most awarded SQL MVPs such as Itzik Ben-Gan, Aaron Bertrand and Kevin Kline. The sponsor list is also brilliant, with names such as HP, FusionIO, SQL Sentry, Quest and SolidQ complimented by Swedish companies like Cornerstone, Informator, B3IT and Addskills. As someone who is interested in PASS becoming global, I’m really excited to see this event happening, and I hope it’s a launch-pad into many other international events hosted by the SQL community. • Subscription based eCommerce Site selling Physical Goods

  I want to implement a system where customers can buy physical products as subscription with recurring billing. Customers will come to my site, visit product page and buy stuff. They need to register an account before purchasing. After registration they will be forwarded to payment processor for payment and after successful payment they will be returned back to my site. Requirement: I dont want to use Paypal as a payment processor. It will be recurring payment on monthly, quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis. Customers can login to my site in order to view their Order History, Profile Management and can edit their Billing and/or Shipping details. Customers can cancel their Subscription any time after login to their account on my site. Plan: Currently I am using wordpress with WooCommerce plugin for eCommerce functionality. I am planning to use Amazon as a payment processor. I have searched WooCommerce Extension Drectory and found WC Subscription extension that can be used for my site. But I just confirmed from the Support WC Subscription only support recurring payment with Paypal and Stripe, no other payment processor is supported at the moment. Questions: According to my need, what will be the best solution? I am open to switch the platform from Wordpress to something else that can fulfill my requirement.

• Dynamic endpoint binding in Oracle SOA Suite by Cattle Crew

  Why is dynamic endpoint binding needed? Sometimes a BPEL process instance has to determine at run-time which implementation of a web service interface is to be called. We’ll show you how to achieve that using dynamic endpoint binding. Let’s imagine the following scenario: we’re running a car rental agency called RYLC (Rent Your Legacy Car) which operates different locations. The process of renting a car is basically identical for all locations except for the determination which cars are currently available. This is depicted in the following diagram: There are three different implementations of the GetAvailableCars service. But how can we achieve calling them dynamically at run-time using Oracle SOA Suite? How to dynamically set the service endpoint There are just a couple of implementation steps we need to perform to enable dynamic endpoint binding: create a new SOA project in JDeveloper add a CarRental BPEL process add an external reference to the GetAvailableCars service within the composite create a DVM file containing the URI’s by which the services for the different locations can be accessed set the endpointURI property on the Invoke component calling the GetAvailableCars service (value is taken from the DVM file) Read the complete article here. • How to change circular icon to indicate chosen session in unity-greeter?

  In Precise (12.04), when I login to lightdm, using the unity-greeter, there's a white circle by my name. For the standard DEs like Unity or XFCE, the circle has a representative icon (Ubuntu symbol or little mouse resp.). I have a session for Awesome window manager which was added when I installed Awesome, but it just shows a blank white circle. I'd like to know how to add an icon to it, or at least some indicator, as unity-greeter doesn't show you what session is set until you click on the circle. I found another question about changing the session names. The answer for it said to change the names in the desktop files in /usr/share/xsessions. Unfortunately, while there is an icon field in those desktop files, they are all blank (Caveat: I no longer have Unity installed, so maybe the Unity one would not be blank. But the Xubuntu desktop file has it blank even though the icon shows in unity-greeter). Update: Here's the png I use as a badge for Awesome. It's not great, but looks reasonably nice: []

• Graduated transition from Green - Yellow - Red

  I have am having algorithm mental block in designing a way to transition from Green to Red, as smoothly as possible with a, potentially, unknown length of time to transition. For testing purposes, i will be using 300 as my model timespan but the methodology algorithm design needs to be flexible enough to account for larger or even smaller timespans. Figured using RGB would probably be the best to transition with, but open to other color creation types, assuming its native to .Net (VB/C#). Currently i have: t = 300 x = t/2 z = 0 low = Green (0, 255, 0) mid = Yellow (255, 255, 0) high = Red (255, 0, 0) Lastly, sort of an optional piece, is to account for the possibility of the low, mid, and high color's to be flexible as well. I assume that there would need to be a check to make sure that someone isnt putting in low = (255,0,0), mid=(254,0,0), and high=(253,0,0). Outside of this anomaly, which i will handle myself based on the best approach to evaluate a color. Question: What would be the best approach to do the transition from low to mid and then from mid to high? What would be some potential pitfalls of implementing this type of design, if any?

• how to troubleshoot sql server issues

  i have an ASP .net application with sql server database, and i am wondering if you can give your ideas on how to troubleshoot the following issue: i can insert / update / delete from any table, but i have one page that uses transactions to insert into different tables. the c# code is correct and very simple, but it fails. i used the sql profiler to see how my app interacts with the DB, especially that the app is using stored procedures, i can catch the exec procedure statement and run it manually from SSMS and it works fine, but the same stored procedure fails from the application!!! which lead me to think that issue is coming from the user account and settings, i am no expert in sql server and wondering if anyone can explain how to verify the required settings for user account. thanks EDIT: in web.config here is how i reference my connection <connectionStrings> <add name="Conn" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=myDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=DbUser;Password=password1254_3" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"> </connectionstring> EDIT: i will try to describe the process here: 1- i begin a transaction 2- i call a stored proc to insert (which succeeds) and return the scope identity ( that will be used in the next step) 3- i call another stored procedure to insert some more info + scope identity from step 2, which is a foreign key here 4- i get error, foreign key violation 5- transaction rolled back, now tables empty again... thanks

• Unity not running on startup

  OK, so Firefox was running extremely slow, I ran it in safe mode and still slow, so I rebooted and when she came back on, I wasn't at the regular Unity login, it was like a classic Windows login (where I had to enter my username and password manually, not a list of users). I logged in and only my desktop was visible (with icons and my wallpaper). Nothing else. I was able to open a terminal with Ctrl+ Alt+T and typed... sudo unity ...which got it up (albeit with the default icons on the launcher ex. I had unlocked Libre Office and it was back). In "Startup Applications..." there was absolutely nothing at all... This happens every time I reboot. Thunderbird de-synced from my Gmail but Pidgin is still connected. When I do Ctrl+Alt+L it locks the screen as normal, but I have no option to switch user. I have the only account on this computer but I cannot access the main login screen to get to my Guest account. I'm not very Ubuntu-savy, but it's pretty clear that I'm starting in some sort of safemode. I am on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (just installed it last night).

• Google authorship verification issue

  I'm trying to get my blog content author verified so my face gets into the Google search results. I managed to achieve this a few weeks back - When testing my content in the Google authorship testing tool it reported that I had been verified and I could see my mug in the results. All I had to do was wait a couple of weeks before I started popping up in the search results (I think(?)). However, I seem to have thrown a spanner in the works. I set up Google apps for my domain and merged my old Google+ profile into my google apps account. This seemed to reset my Google+ profile (no biggy, since it was a new profile and only had 1 connection). I re-set up my G+ account and tied it all in to my blog and it's content. I am now seeing some very strange behaviour. If you take a look at one of my blog posts through the snippet testing tool: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.fraser-hart.co.uk%2Fjquery-fullscreen-background-slideshow%2F&html= You will see that it is not recognising me as an author. However, when you enter my profile URL (https://plus.google.com/108765138229426105004) into the "Authorship verification by email" input, you will see that it does in fact recognise it as verified. Now, if you try and verify the same page again, it reverts back to unverified. I thought I may have to just wait it out but this has been over a week now and previously (before I merged my profile) it happened instantaneously. Has anyone experienced this bizarre behaviour before? What is happening here? More importantly, is there anything I can do to resolve it? (Apologies for the long and boring question). Cheers!

I want to collect pro's and con's for either way. Maybe there are even still other ways? One disadvantage of my way is of course the need for occasional forward declarations.

• Creating country specific twitter/facebook accounts

  I see many companies that have an international presence trying to localize their social media presence by creating country or language specific accounts. However some seemed to have done so without following a consistent pattern, one example being the World Wildlife Fund when you look at their Twitter accounts: World_Wildlife : verified account with 200K followers WWF : main account with 800K followers www_uk : lower case with underscore between WWF and country indicator WWFCanada : upper case with country indicator attached to WWF ... I am planning to build a website which hopefully will grow global and would like to avoid this sort of inconsistencies. Also, I was comparing what Twitter and Facebook allow in their username and found out that they don't allow the same characters to be used (e.g. for instance that the former doesn't allow . whereas the latter does) making difficult to ensure consistency across social networks. Hence my questions: Are there known naming schemes for creating localized Twitter and Facebook accounts while maintaining a certain consistency between them (best effort)? Are there any researches out there that have proven whether some schemes were better than others in terms of readability and/or SEO?
